In a surprising turn of events, on Friday Mexico arrested former attorney general Jesus Murillo Karam on charges of forced disappearance, torture and obstruction of justice in the 2014 disappearance of 43 students.

Under the then president Enrique Pena Nieto, the former attorney general Murillo had actually led a controversial investigation into the disappearance, which is often referred to as "one of the country's worst human rights tragedies".

So far, Jesus Murillo Karam is the highest-ranking official detained in connection with the case, which has stunned the country and sparked international outrage.

2022 has been the deadliest year on record for journalists in Mexico. As per a report by Article 19, a human rights organisation, 18 journalists have been killed in the country so far this year.

Talking to Reuters, the organisation's regional director Leopoldo Maldonado said, "2022 could be the worst year in a century for the press".

Maldonado further revealed that according to Article 19 investigation, nine out of the 18 deaths have thus far produced a potential link to the journalist's work.

In the first half of the year, the group has recorded a total of 331 attacks against journalists, the majority of which entail intimidation and harassment. Some of them also received threats, and a few of the cases involved alleged abuses of authority.

With 18 deaths, 331 attacks, 2022 is the 'deadliest' year in a century for journalists in Mexico: Report

A truth commission investigating one of Mexico's worst human rights tragedies said Thursday that military personnel bore responsibility, either directly or through negligence, for the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

"Their actions, omissions or participation allowed the disappearance and execution of the students, as well as the murder of six other people," said the commission's head, deputy interior minister Alejandro Encinas.

The teaching students had commandeered buses in the southern state of Guerrero to travel to a demonstration before they went missing.

According to an official report presented in 2015 by the government of then-president Enrique Pena Nieto, they were arrested by corrupt police and handed over to a drug cartel.

The cartel mistook the students for members of a rival gang and killed them before incinerating and dumping their remains, according to that report, which did not attribute responsibility to the military.

Those conclusions were rejected by relatives as well as independent experts and the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Encinas said that further investigations were necessary to establish the extent of participation by army and navy personnel.

"An action of an institutional nature was not proven, but there was clear responsibility of members" of the armed forces stationed in the area at the time, he said.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in March that navy members were under investigation for allegedly tampering with evidence, notably at a garbage dump where human remains were found, including those of the only three students identified so far.

He denied an accusation by independent experts that Mexican authorities were withholding important information about the case, which shocked the country and drew international condemnation.

The city of Monterrey in Mexico is battling a major water crisis, despite being an industrial hub and the third largest city in the country, USA Today reported. Officials had announced in early June that access to running water will be restricted, with only six hours of water access a day. Temperatures have risen above 100 degrees, leading to a dry weather and two of the three main reservoirs serving the city almost empty. Climate experts blame La Niña for less rainfall. The glaring problem is mostly due to the growing population, while the water supply hasn't been able to match it.

The issue isn't limited to Mexico and many parts of North America are facing the same problem.

Many Native American tribes along the Colorado River Basin lack access to reliable water sources and clean drinking water, leaving them with no option but to travel to far off places to get some.

The town of Rawlins, Wyoming, has been facing a water crisis since March, while in Utah, two towns last year were forced to stop construction because of a declining water supply. Water levels at Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two largest reservoirs in the US, have also been lower than ever.

Government mismanagement to blame

Environmental advocates believe that certain government policies also contributed to the problem. For eg, beer and soda companies were allowed to extract huge amounts of water even when the area was facing a drought, with the production still ongoing at a large scale. Another much needed dam to shore up the water supply wasn't built in time, which added to the crisis. To alleviate the problem, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced federal support for such companies who want to move to southern Mexico.

Is the situation in US as bad?

Experts say that a crisis on the same scale as Monterrey might not happen in the US anytime soon, but there are signs that it might happen in future. “We’re definitely pushing really hard on our water supply reliability in California and in the Colorado River Basin right now," USA Today quoted Mark Lubell, an environmental science and policy professor at UC Davis, as saying.

Factors similar to Monterrey can also be seen in western US. More and more people are moving to cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas, while agriculture is usurping water from the Colorado River, a pattern similar to what the beverage companies are doing in Mexico. Experts also say that the water use plans are "decades old, overly optimistic and poorly executed".

The tribes within the Colorado River Basin, who have rights to about a fourth of the river’s water supply, are facing problems due to lack of proper infrastructure that can ensure the water reaches them.

“Existing water infrastructure is deteriorating or inadequate, ... (and) investment in water infrastructure has not kept up with population growth and other needs,” according to a Water and Tribes Initiative 2021 report.

To avoid the problem being seen in Monterrey, US authorities need to bring water usage and water supply back in line to reduce the dependence on reserves.

The miners were conducting regular excavation work and came across an area that was full of water. It then caved-in and flooded the mine on Wednesday afternoon, entrapping the miners.

Local media reports suggest that one of the miners managed to escape and informed the relevant authorities about the matter.

Notably, last year, in June and July, two Coahuila mines witnessed a cave-in, killing nine miners.

Coahuila is also the place where Mexico's worst mining accident took place. On February 19, 2006, 65 of 73 miners died after an explosion in the Pasta de Conchos mine. The others were rescued and only two bodies were recovered.

Mexico: Former President Enrique Pena Nieto under scrutiny for alleged corruption

Just a month after 53 people died in San Antonio, Texas, due to suffocation and dehydration while trying to enter the U.S. illegally, another shocking case has come to light, this time in Mexico.

A truck carrying about 94 people was heading from Mexico toward the U.S. border. However, the driver abandoned the vehicle ahead of a checkpoint, leaving everyone inside locked.

Realising they had been abandoned, people forced a way out of the top of the truck to escape the unbearable heat. Authorities found at least 94 people in and around the vehicle. Authorities also suspect some may have run away after escaping.

Many people were treated for ankle and knee fractures after jumping from the vehicle’s top. Paramedics also said that one unconscious man was taken to hospital.

Employees of a petrol station close to where the truck was abandoned helped the migrants to escape. Mexico’s national guard and navy patrolled the area searching for people hiding in any surrounding bushes.

Civil protection paramedic Cristóbal Cisneros Valencia said the migrants had “started to feel suffocated” and had struck the trailer’s roof until they broke through and could jump out.

“That is why most of the injuries we treated were ankle and knee fractures, with a damaged sense of balance,” he said.

Guatemala’s foreign ministry said 89 of those rescued were Guatemalan, including 55 adults, with the rest children and families. There were also five people from Honduras, four from Ecuador, two Indians, one Salvadoran and one Nepali.

In order to demand justice for the femicide of 35-year-old Luz Raquel Padilla, feminist activists and members of caretakers organisations protested in Mexico City.

Unknown assailants attacked Padilla, doused her with alcohol, and burnt her in the town of Zapopan in the state of Jalisco.

According to authorities, after suffering burns on 90 percent of her body, Padilla died in a hospital on Tuesday.

Citing witnesses, prosecutor Luis Joaquin Mendez said that Padilla's neighbour was arrested for making threats and crimes against a person's dignity in connection with previous incidents.

Not only this, he wrote graffiti with messages including "I'm going to burn you alive" on the walls of the building where they lived because of her son's shouting as per accusations made by Padilla in May.

She wrote in a social media post that "How long am I going to have to live in fear that something could happen to me and my family?"

Accusing the authorities of inaction and indifference, dozens of women demonstrated in front of the Zapopan police station.

During Padilla's wake, the priest appealed for an end to violence against women while her relatives and friends freed white doves after her funeral mass.

Highlighting that it was his government’s commitment to apprehending the perpetrators, Jalisco State governor Enrique Alfaro said the case is being investigated as a possible femicide.

Luz Raquel Padilla: Mexican activists demand justice for mother of autistic boy after she was set on fire

Mexico's Navy said on Friday that it had apprehended infamous drug kingpin Rafael Caro Quintero, who was convicted of killing and torturing a U.S. anti-narcotics agent in 1985. This was a significant victory for Mexican and American law enforcement. As a co-founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, one of Latin America's most potent drug trafficking organisations in the 1980s, the kingpin gained notoriety. It had been one of the top priorities for American officials.

As reported by Reuters, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said he would seek Caro Quintero's immediate extradition. "There is no hiding place for anyone who kidnaps, tortures, and murders American law enforcement. We are deeply grateful to Mexican authorities for their capture and arrest of Rafael Caro-Quintero," Garland said in a statement.

According to the Navy, a female bloodhound with military training named Max discovered him in a bush area. Prior to this, Caro Quintero denied any involvement in the murder of Camarena. A Mexican judge released him in 2013 based on a technicality, insulting the previous administration. The FBI's Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list lists him as having rapidly returned to trafficking as a member of the Sinaloa Cartel. A $20 million bounty has been placed on his head, a record for a drug trafficker. He lost his final attempt to stop his extradition to the US last year. Another Mexican official assured him that he will be returned to Mexico as soon as possible.

Mexico arrests drug lord on 'FBI ten most wanted fugitive' list

Mexico's navy captured drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who is convicted of murdering a US anti-narcotics agent in 1985, in a law enforcement coup that came at a heavy cost when a helicopter used in the mission crashed, killing 14 military personnel.

A Mexican schoolboy was set on fire and badly burned in a classroom -- his "only crime" was speaking an Indigenous language in a country struggling to end racial discrimination. Two classmates are accused of pouring alcohol on Juan Zamorano's seat at a high school in the central state of Queretaro in June. When the 14-year-old realized his trousers were wet and stood up, one of them set Zamorano on fire, according to his family, as reported by AFP.

He suffered second and third-degree burns and was only this week discharged from the hospital. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that if necessary, the country's attorney general's office might handle the case. Juan's "only crime was speaking Otomi," tweeted Lopez Obrador's spokesman Jesus Ramirez, who said that eradicating racism was everyone's responsibility.

Juan had already suffered weeks of bullying because of his Indigenous Otomi roots, according to his family's lawyers, who filed complaints against the alleged attackers and school authorities. With an estimated population of 350,000, the Otomi are one of the dozens of Indigenous groups in the Latin American country. The Otomi language is Juan's mother tongue "but he doesn't like to speak it much because it's a cause of ridicule, harassment and bullying," Ernesto Franco, one of the family's lawyers, told AFP.

The family has alleged to the media that even Zamorano's teacher harassed him because of his origin. "She thinks that we're not her class, we're not her race," Zamorano's father, who described the attack as "attempted murder," told the newspaper El Universal. Mexico's National Institute of Indigenous Peoples urged the authorities to "sanction minors and adults involved in harassment and recurring attacks on minors." Urgent measures are needed in schools to prevent further cases of discrimination and racism, it said.

In a shocking development, a newly-built footbridge came down at the time of inauguration itself in Mexican city of Cuernavaca on Tuesday. At the time of the incident, the mayor and several other people were present. The hanging bridge, which was erected over a scenic stream, was made of wooden boards. The metal chains of the bridge were recently remodeled. When it collapsed, the mayor and around two dozen other people fell about 3 meters (10 feet) into a gully. In the stream bed, there were rocks and boulders. The injured included local officials like city council members.

#Cuernavaca Mayor and other officials during the reopening of a pedestrian bridge. #México pic.twitter.com/wcNe48vhCA — David Wolf (@DavidWolf777) June 7, 2022 × The incident was caught on camera. Leader of La Luz del Mundo (The Light of the World) church Naason Joaquin Garcia has pleaded guilty to allegations of child sexual abuse days before he is due to stand trial. The Light of the World is a huge church and has millions of members worldwide

Garcia has pleaded guilty to assault on young church members around Los Angeles for number of years.

"As the leader of La Luz del Mundo, Naason Joaquin Garcia used his power to take advantage of children," California Attorney General Rob Bonta said.

"He relied on those around him to groom congregants for the purposes of sexual assault."

According to prosecutors, Garcia (53) exploited his position and forced underage girls to commit sexual acts.

During the course of the investigation they alleged Garcia and his co-defendants had told victims that refusing to comply with his wishes would be acting against God.

Garcia had faced a raft of charges relating to alleged wrongdoing up to his arrest at Los Angeles International Airport in 2019.

The preacher, who was charged alongside two other church members, had been due to stand trial, starting on Monday.

But his guilty pleas to three counts mean he will now be sentenced next week, and is expected to face several years' jail.

Head of Mexican megachurch admits sexual abuse of children in US

A Mexican city in the border state of Nuevo Leon is limiting daily water access to residents to just a six-hour window in response to a historic drought in the region, authorities said Friday.

The city of Monterrey, a major business hub whose metropolitan area is home to 5.3 million, will allow water use from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily. Its previous policy restricted water for one day per week based on location.

The move is the latest by authorities to tackle water shortages in the region. Demand currently outpaces supply by about 2.5 cubic meters per second, city water director Juan Ignacio Barragan said in a press conference.

The state of Nuevo Leon, which has increasingly seen temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) entered a state of emergency for "extreme drought" in February. The area has seen lower-than-expected amounts of rain since 2015, Barragan said.
