The United States has asked Mexico to extradite drug lord El Chapo's powerful son, Ovidio Guzmán-López, nearly two months after he was arrested amid deadly clashes that killed 29. Mexico's Culiacán city was gripped in a long spell of terror and violence on January 5 when drug cartel gunmen fought against security personnel and tried to stop them from taking away Ovidio Guzmán-López. Nicknamed "El Raton” (The Mouse), he has been linked to his father's former drug cartel. Ten members of the military were among those who died in the bloodshed, apart from 19 alleged cartel shooters.

The 32-year-old allegedly directed 11 methamphetamine production facilities in the state of Sinaloa that produce between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds of the drug every month. Sinaloa drug cartel is among the largest drug-trafficking organisations in the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Ovidio Guzmán-López is a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel and the son of former Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín Guzmán-Loera (aka El Chapo). Law enforcement investigations indicate Ovidio and his brother, Joaquín Guzmán-López, function in high-level command and control roles of their own drug trafficking organization, the Guzmán-López Transnational Criminal Organization, under the umbrella of the Sinaloa Cartel," reads a December 2021 statement from the US State Department, which also highlighted that "methamphetamine is sold wholesale to other Sinaloa members and to distributors based in the US and Canada."

US asks Mexico to extradite El Chapo's son, Ovidio Guzmán-López, weeks after arrest sparked violence

Many Mexico towns have seen large-scale protests over what the opposition claims are government efforts to sabotage the vote process. The largest took place in Mexico City, where organisers estimate that 500,000 people marched through the centre of the city. The 90,000 figure was given by the regional government.

Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador posted a photo on social media of what he said was a mythological woodland spirit similar to an elf. The Mexican President's social media post claiming to be reminiscent of the ancient Mayan civilisation, became quite a social media moment this weekend in Mexico.

The president posted the photo of an "Aluxe", which is basically a woodland spirit in Mayan folklore.

López Obrador said that the photo "was taken three days ago by an engineer, it appears to be an aluxe," adding "everything is mystical."

Mexican president posts photo of what he claims is an elf from Mayan civilisation

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s opposition has planned mass protests, on Sunday (February 26) against the recently passed legislation which critics say will weaken democracy by lessening the powers of the independent electoral authority in the country. The move has also raised concerns as it comes ahead of the presidential elections next year. However, the Mexican president has since vehemently denied these accusations.&nbsp;

What is the legislation about?

Last week, the Mexican Congress passed a bill which sought an overhaul of the National Electoral Institute (INE) which includes slashing the budget and staff. The legislative initiative, known as “Plan B” was proposed by the president in December, last year however, was unable to garner enough votes.&nbsp;

Lopez Obrador has argued that this reorganisation will save $150 million per year as well as reduce the impact of economic interests in politics. Mexican presidents are only allowed to serve a single six-year term. Furthermore, the 69-year-old incumbent president has also alleged that the INE is too expensive and accused them of being biased in favour of his opposition.&nbsp;

The Mexican president&nbsp;has also blamed the agency for his defeat in the two previous elections before he came into power in 2018. This also comes after Lopez Obrador&nbsp;has repeatedly attacked the electoral agency and even made claims about voter fraud which he says led to his defeat in the 2006 presidential elections.&nbsp;

The reform was approved in Mexico’s senate, on Friday with a 72 to 50 vote from lawmakers. Notably, the INE and its predecessor played an important role when the country moved from a one-party system to a multi-party democracy over two decades ago.&nbsp;

What the critics and opposition have said about it?

After the vote, on Friday, the current president’s opponents vowed to challenge this decision in the supreme court, while protests took place in multiple cities across the country. Some Mexicans have also noted similarities to the kind of rhetoric used by former United States President Donald Trump and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of elections which seems to aim at delegitimising the election process, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the INE chief Lorenzo Cordova has called these changes a “democratic setback” that puts “certain, trustworthy and transparent” elections at risk, as per Reuters. The agency which employs thousands of people will also witness the closure of offices and layoffs due to this legislation.&nbsp;

“Normally presidents try to have governability and stability for their succession, but the president is creating uncertainty”, said opposition politician, Fernando Belaunzaran. He has also warned how these changes could create disputes in the 2024 elections when the next president will be chosen. “He’s playing with fire,” said the opposition politician.&nbsp;

A Reuters report, citing polls, also said the incumbent president’s party National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) has a strong chance of winning in the upcoming elections. However, critics of the INE overhaul say it would not happen unless Lopez Obrador does not tamper with the 2024 elections.&nbsp;

The “Plan B” comes ahead of the elections in two states of Mexico, which will take place in June and the general elections next year where voting is held for the president as well as lawmakers from 30 states.&nbsp;

Mass protests to take place on Sunday&nbsp;

Belaunzaran who is also organising the protests on Sunday said that his fellow demonstrators hope to gather more than the tens of thousands of people who had previously turned out in November to denounce Lopez Obrador’s unsuccessful bid to push through constitutional changes to reform the INE. The protest will take place in Mexico City’s central Zocalo square which is also near the presidential palace.&nbsp;

Mexican opposition plans mass protests against President Lopez Obrador’s electoral overhaul

Mexico is witnessing fierce competition among its states to secure a possible Tesla plant in a tussle similar to what goes on among US cities and governments competing to gain investments from IT companies. Mexican governors have gone to new extremes to promote their states, by installing billboards, constructing dedicated lanes for cars, or making mockups of Tesla ads, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Tesla has not given in any official word and there is no assurance that it will construct a full-fledged&nbsp;plant. The hype is unfounded, and the major source of it is Mexican officials' claims that Tesla CEO Elon Musk would soon get on a phone call with Mexico president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

<h2>'Welcome Tesla' billboards</h2>

Nuevo Leon, an industrial state in the north, appeared to hold an early lead in the competition.

It created "Welcome Tesla" billboards in the state capital of Monterrey in December after painting the Tesla emblem on a lane at the Colombian border crossing into Texas last summer. It also featured&nbsp;Mariana Rodriguez, the state governor's influencer&nbsp;wife, appearing&nbsp;in photos from a gathering with Musk.

López Obrador, on the other hand, seemed to rule out the semi-arid state on Monday, saying he wouldn't let manufacturers' usual high water use run the danger of causing shortages there.

That sparked an aggressive scramble among the other Mexican states.&nbsp;

“Veracruz is the only state with an excess of gas,” quipped Gov. Cuitláhuac García of the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, before quickly adding “gas … for industrial use, for industrial use!”

Being a late entrant, Garca had to work harder. He pointed out that Veracruz was home to Mexico's sole nuclear power plant. Moreover, he said that Veracruz was responsible for 30% of Mexico's water supply, despite the fact that the National Water Commission estimates the state's contribution to be closer to 11%. It seems that water is thicker than blood.

In the past, Musk has made promises that either do not&nbsp;materialise or do so decades after he says they would. Mexico Senate on Wednesday passed a bill overhauling the body that organises elections and monitors political activity in the country, a move that critics say will favour President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections.

The reform was approved by the Senate with 72 votes in favour and 50 against. However, it still needs to be signed by Lopez to become law.&nbsp;The bill entails cutting short the budget of the election body, National Electoral Institute (INE), slashing public funding for political parties, in addition to changing several electoral procedures.&nbsp;

The passing of this bill is seen as a digressional step from the 2000 election reform that ended the 71 years of one-party rule. Therefore, the critics are voicing their opposition to the passing of the bill. The president, however, has been throwing his weight behind the reforms. In mid-November, he said, “The reform tries to strengthen democracy, protect it, because there are still risks of electoral fraud.”

His calls for these reforms intensified after he lost the 2006 presidential election, which he later claimed was&nbsp;fraudulent. He again gained power in 2018 but his allegations continue.&nbsp; Opposition lawmakers and civil society groups are now railing against the president and have said they will approach Supreme Court to challenge the reforms as they are unconstitutional.&nbsp;

Mexico Senate on Wednesday passed a bill overhauling the body that organises elections and monitors political activity in the country, a move that critics say will favour President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections. The reform was approved by the Senate with 72 votes in favour and 50 against. However, it still needs to be signed by Lopez to become law. The bill entails cutting short the budget of the election body, National Electoral Institute (INE), slashing public funding for political parties, in addition to changing several electoral procedures. Also Read | First time in 52 years! World’s longest skating rink to close due to global warming The passing of this bill is seen as a digressional step from the 2000 election reform that ended the 71 years of one-party rule. Therefore, the critics are voicing their opposition to the passing of the bill. The president, however, has been throwing his weight behind the reforms. In mid-November, he said, “The reform tries to strengthen democracy, protect it, because there are still risks of electoral fraud.” His calls for these reforms intensified after he lost the 2006 presidential election, which he later claimed was fraudulent. He again gained power in 2018 but his allegations continue. Opposition lawmakers and civil society groups are now railing against the president and have said they will approach Supreme Court to challenge the reforms as they are unconstitutional. Authorities in Mexico have alleged that the former director of a zoo in the country not only did&nbsp;kill animals to serve them up at a Christmas party but also trade&nbsp;some animals to private individuals. The state environment authorities have accused José Rubén Nava, the former director of the local zoo in the city of Chilpancingo, of killing 4 pygmy goats and then cooking them on the zoo’s premises for a Christmas party. Authorities said the animals were not fit for human consumption and the heinous act put several human lives at risk. Rubén Nava was apparently fired from his position on January 12.

As reported in the media, Rubén Nava traded off a Zebra to some private individuals because he wanted to get some tools to fix things around the zoo. Although, the investigation agency couldn’t find any tool on the zoo’s premises. Similarly, deer and Watusi cattle were also traded off to private individuals under Nava’s orders without proper accounting.

It was not clear if Nava has been formally charged in the case, but he has already been fired from his position in the Chilpancingo Zoo.

Mexican authorities on Thursday stopped a crowded truck transporting nearly 70 migrants from Guatemala, mostly unaccompanied children, the country's National Institute of Migration (INM) said in a statement.

The INM said federal Mexican agents spotted the truck at a checkpoint in&nbsp;Mexico's northern Chihuahua state, which borders the United States.

It said there were 67 migrants from Guatemala traveling in the truck, including 57 unaccompanied minors, mostly boys, aged between 14 and 17. The group also included a mother and daughter, it added, all without proper migration permits.

The truck driver was referred to&nbsp;Mexico's Attorney General's Office, it added, while the family and unaccompanied kids will be handed over to state authorities for the protection of children and teenagers.

Earlier in January, Mexican immigration agents found three unaccompanied Salvadoran children stranded on an islet on the Rio Grande, which straddles the U.S.-Mexico&nbsp;border.

December saw a near record number of apprehensions at the border, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, though this number plummeted in January in the wake of new migrant restrictions imposed by U.S. President Joe Biden.

Authorities in Mexico are warning about a viral TikTok challenge that has left school students intoxicated. The challenge with the slogan "The last one to fall asleep wins" involves people trying to stay awake after consuming a drug called clonazepam which is used for treating seizures, panic attacks and anxiety, a report by news agency AFP said early Saturday (January 21). One of the side effects of clonazepam is drowsiness.

Several videos have been posted on TikTok of people recording themselves taking the drug to observe the effects while others have posted videos warning about the dangers of the challenge.&nbsp;

On Thursday, Mexico City's public security department said that paramedics had treated five intoxicated minors at a school. On the other hand, authorities in the northern state of Nuevo Leon saw three such cases. None of the students was seriously ill.&nbsp;

Alma Rosa, the health secretary of Nuevo Leon said that such challenges that spread through networks often put people's health at risk, the AFP report added. Previously, this TikTok challenge was also seen in Chile.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, authorities in Argentina are on alert over another challenge on TikTok which involves people competing to see who can hold their breath the longest without passing out. The ''Blackout Challenge" has killed two children in the country till now. According to a report by the Buenos Aires Herald, the victims&nbsp;aged 12 and 15 died in separate incidents just days apart.&nbsp;

On January 13, 12-year-old Milagros Soto was found dead in her bedroom in Capitán Bermúdez, Santa Fe. Speaking to Radio 2, Soto's aunt said the girl was in a TikTok group video chat with her classmates where she “was incentivised” to do the challenge which claimed her life. Thousands of members of the National Guard will be deployed to stations and other facilities of Mexico City's metro system following a series of serious incidents. Mexico City's mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday (January 12) that she asked President Manuel Lopez Obrador for the support of the National Guard after a series of 'atypical episodes', a report by news agency Reuters on Friday (January 13) said. The deployment in the capital's metro system comes almost a week after two metro <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/at-least-one-dead-over-50-injured-after-train-collision-in-mexico-reports-550384">trains collided in a tunnel on January 7</a>, killing one woman and injuring 57 others. This was the most serious accident after a section of the elevated track collapsed in May 2021, killing 26 people and injuring dozens.&nbsp;

Why is the deployment of the National Guard being done?

As mentioned before, the deployment comes following a series of serious incidents seen on the Mexico City Metro including the horrific crash on January 7. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said that other less serious incidents, including problems with wheels, had been reported in recent months, a report by news agency AFP on Friday said. The mayor added the same day (January 7) the two trains collided, another problem occurred at another metro station, followed by another incident the next day and another two days back (on January 11) involving a train car which had been serviced a day before, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

How many members of the National Guard will be deployed?

Around 6,000 members of the National Guard will be deployed in Mexico City's metro system. Mayor Sheinbaum tweeted that the objective of the guards is to guarantee the safety of users and they will be unarmed. She also pointed out the guards will be deployed for a few months aiding surveillance and security and could stay there permanently pending later evacuation.&nbsp;

What do passengers have to say about the deployment?

Speaking to Reuters, Lucia Corsas, a passenger, said the deployment of the National Guard in Mexico City's metro is ''very good." "I think the metro needs maintenance, but it's a lot of a coincidence that so many events are happening recently. Mainly, because of the political issues that occurred recently, but I also think this would be a bit paranoid. We better should focus on what we can do, which is to repair some issues of the metro, and I think the deployment of the National Guard is very good," Corsas said.&nbsp;

Another passenger Diego Alberto Lara, while lauding the decision said the presence of the National Guard would provide more safety in the metro. "Once I got assaulted in the metro, I told the police and they ignored it. And regarding what's happening - I don't think it was sabotage, it was a shortcut or something because there are rodents on the train tracks and they bite the cables. This is what provokes shortcuts," Lara told the news agency.&nbsp;

Are there any concerns?

Political opponents of President Manuel Lopez Obrador have accused him of overseeing the "militarization" of Mexico by giving increased responsibility to the armed forces, the AFP report on Friday said. Commenting on the National Guard's deployment in the metro, Obrador hit back at his opponents by saying, "If they call that militarisation or whatever they call it, we assume responsibility."

Meanwhile, Amnesty International expressed concerns about the decision as it called for a guarantee that public security tasks are carried out by civil institutions.
