West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya on Monday slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led government, saying the people of the state will put an end to what he called the "Maha Jungle Raj." He highlighted concerns over law and order, border security, and human trafficking, asserting that no force can help the Trinamool Congress retain power for a third term. Speaking to the reporters, Samik Bhattacharya said, "Rahul Gandhi worked very hard in the Bihar elections. He even took a dip (in the pond). But everyone knows the result. SIR is happening in 12 states, but the most uproar is happening in West Bengal. What is the reason? Our state of Bengal has a border of more than 2,200 kilometres with Bangladesh..." "In such a state, with such a long and open border, if there is no joint operation of the Central forces, BSF and police, if there is no political consensus, and if there is no awareness among the people, then human trafficking cannot be stopped... Demographic changes are visible... No force can bring Mamata Banerjee to power for the third time. The people of West Bengal will end the 'Maha Jungle Raj' government," he said. Currently, a nationwide SIR is being carried out in 12 states and union territories, with the final elector's list to be published on February 7, 2026. These states and UTs are: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. According to the Election Commission, printing and training took place from October 28 to November 3, followed by an Enumeration Phase from November 4 to December 4. The draft electoral rolls will be published on December 9, followed by a claims and objections period from December 9 to January 8, 2026. The Notice Phase (for hearing and verification) will take place between December 9 and January 31, 2026, with publication of Final Electoral Rolls on February 7, 2026. The opposition has strongly opposed the SIR process, alleging that it is aimed at striking the names of voters from underprivileged communities off the voter lists.

‘People of West Bengal will end 'Maha Jungle Raj' govt’: BJP's Samik Bhattacharya

The Durgapur gangrape case, in which a 23-year-old medical student accused multiple men of assault, took a new twist on Wednesday (October 15). The victim’s father publicly apologized to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after his previous remarks comparing her leadership to that of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. In a statement to the media, the father expressed deep respect for Banerjee, calling her a "mother-like figure," and asked for forgiveness if his comments had caused offense. He further requested that the CM assist in securing justice for his daughter.Earlier, the father had been vocal in his criticism of Banerjee after the CM questioned why the victim was out late at night. Angered, he had likened the state’s governance to that of Aurangzeb, and even suggested he might return to his home state of Odisha for his daughter's safety, prioritizing her life over her education. He also demanded a CBI investigation, which is under the jurisdiction of the BJP-led central government, sparking a political controversy.Meanwhile, the case has taken a dramatic turn with the police raising doubts about the victim's account. Initially, she claimed she was abducted and raped by multiple men in a forested area after leaving her campus with a male classmate to fetch food on the evening of October 10. However, police now suggest the crime may have been committed by a single individual, not a group, and have arrested her male friend, who is the sixth person to be detained.Authorities have pointed out several inconsistencies in the victim's statements, and CCTV footage shows the student calmly returning to campus with her friend, her clothing reportedly intact, without seeking assistance from campus security. The police argue that if the assault had been as described—being dragged through a jungle and gang-raped—evidence would have been apparent. Thus, the case may be reclassified as a rape, not a gang-rape.

The alleged gangrape of a 23-year-old second-year medical student near a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, has snowballed into a major controversy, fuelling public anger and a fierce political slugfest. As part of the ongoing investigation, police on Tuesday (October 14) moved to reconstruct the crime scene. All five suspects have now been arrested, including two nabbed on Monday (October 13) with the help of one accused’s sister. Outrage grows after the gangrape of a medical student in Durgapur. All five accused have been arrested; West Bengal's CM’s remarks spark political row as NCW and governor intervene

On October 10, 2025, a 23-year-old girl, a student of second year MBBS, was gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal, India. The location was just 170 km from the capital city of Kolkata. 'We didn't ban Holi': West Bengal MoS denies claim, says Mamata Banerjee banned Holi celebration at Santiniketan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the group of leaders that he said were "mocking religion" and "engaged in dividing people".
He further alleged that there were many instances of foreign powers attempting to weaken the sovereignty of the country by joining hands with these people.
While addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone of the Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute for Cancer in Chhattarpur, the prime minister said, "Nowadays we see that there is a group of leaders who mock religion, ridicule it, are engaged in dividing people, and many times foreign powers also try to weaken the country and religion by supporting these people. People who hate the Hindu faith have been living in some phase or the other for centuries."
PM Modi then fired back at the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent "Mrityu Kumbh" remarks, without directly naming anyone, "People who have fallen into the mentality of slavery keep attacking our faith, beliefs, and temples, our religion, culture, and principles. These people abuse our festivals, traditions, and customs. They dare to attack the religion and culture, which are progressive by nature. Dividing our society and breaking its unity is their agenda."
"At this time, Dhirendra Shastri has been making people aware of the mantra of unity in the country for a long time. Now, he has reached another resolution in the interest of society and humanity. This is the plan to build this cancer institute. That means now, here in Bageshwar Dham, you will get the blessings of bhajan, food, and a healthy life...," Prime Minister Modi said.

Amit Shah targets Mamata Banerjee, pledges a 'two-thirds BJP majority' in 2026 Bengal polls

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held talks on Monday (Oct 21) evening with a delegation of 17 junior doctors to resolve the ongoing dispute following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical Hospital.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held talks on Monday (Oct 21) evening with a delegation of 17 junior doctors to resolve the ongoing dispute following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical Hospital. The meeting, which lasted almost two hours, was an attempt to address various concerns, including the "culture of threats" at state-run hospitals. The doctors ended their fast on Monday following the meeting with Banerjee. Also read: EAM Jaishankar slams Canada’s ‘double standards’ on free speech “In today’s meeting (with the CM), we did get the assurance of some directives, but the body language of the state government was not positive. The common people have wholeheartedly supported us. They, as well as the parents of our deceased sister (RG Kar hospital victim), have been requesting us to call off the hunger strike, keeping in mind our deteriorating health," the doctors told the news agency PTI after the meeting. The discussion took place on the 17th day of the indefinite hunger strike, and for the first time, it was broadcast live from the state secretariat, Nabanna. During the meeting, Banerjee urged the doctors to end their hunger strike, stressing that most of their demands had already been met. However, she rejected their call for the removal of the state health secretary. “At RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, several junior doctors and medical students were suspended without following proper procedures and rules. How can these students or resident doctors be suspended just on the basis of complaints? Who gave the college authorities the right to take such a step without informing the state government? Is this not a threat culture?” Banerjee questioned. The doctors raised concerns about the hostile environment they face, asking for measures to be taken against those responsible. “If we look at this, a culture of threats exists, as several names have come up numerous times—who used to threaten junior doctors with cancellation of their registration and misuse their power. We want a positive and healthy culture,” they said. The outcomes of the meeting, including the points agreed upon, will be formalised and directives will be issued on October 22. The doctors have been on a hunger strike for 17 days, demanding justice for their colleague who was raped at RG Kar Medical Hospital and calling for reforms in the state's healthcare system. Six doctors have already been hospitalised due to poor health, while eight others continue their indefinite fast. Massive protests had erupted across West Bengal following the brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor on the premises of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The outcome of this meeting will determine whether they will continue their indefinite strike. The meeting is scheduled for Monday at 5:00 pm at Nabanna, the state secretariat. Previous attempts by Banerjee to resolve the deadlock through similar meetings were unsuccessful. While saying that most of their demands had been addressed, CM Mamata Banerjee rejected their request to dismiss the state health secretary. On Saturday, Banerjee sent chief secretary Mano Pant to Rani Rashmoni Avenue, and spoke to the protesters on his phone while offering to meet them again. "If you want to talk, I will cancel some of my appointments and meet you at 5:00 PM on Monday. But please end your hunger strike," Banerjee told them during the speakerphone conversation, which was broadcast publicly. Despite these efforts, the hunger strike continued.
