West Bengal: Rebellion Grows Within Trinamool Congress

The political showdown comes amid fresh accusations and counter-claims following recent electoral developments in the state.

Is TMC Heading For A Split? Internal Rift Deepens After Bengal Poll Defeat

Trinamool MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, expelled for anti-party activities recently, said on Wednesday that he has been recognised by the Bengal Assembly Speaker as the Leader of the Opposition after 60 MLAs submitted letters of support endorsing him. The former Left leader, who joined the TMC in 2018, was handed over the keys to the chamber of the leader of the opposition. Earlier in the day, the 58 rebel MLAs submitted their letter of support to Speaker Rathindranath Bose, comfortably crossing the two-thirds threshold required under the anti-defection law to avoid disqualification. Mamata to lead protest in Kolkata on June 2 against attacks on Abhishek, Kalyan Banerjee

The West Bengal government on Saturday removed the controversial football-themed sculpture installed outside Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, ending years of debate around a structure that had become one of the venue’s most recognisable landmarks. The sculpture, designed by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, had long divided football supporters and political observers, with critics describing it as visually unappealing and difficult to interpret. Installed near the VVIP gate ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, the structure featured two giant footballing legs cut at the torso, merging into the Biswa Bangla logo with the word ‘Joyi’ inscribed on a football placed above. Over time, the sculpture became closely associated with the iconic stadium, which has hosted several major Kolkata derbies between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan as well as international football fixtures. ALSO READ: Not Mumbai or Delhi!
Sports minister calls structure ‘grotesque’

The removal came days after West Bengal Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik publicly announced plans to dismantle the structure while outlining infrastructure upgrades at the stadium. Speaking to reporters after the Indian Super League Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC ended in a 1-1 draw on May 18, Pramanik sharply criticised the design. “Such an ugly-looking statue, two legs cut at torso and football above it does not make sense. It does not look aesthetically pleasing either, so we will not keep such a grotesque structure that has no meaning, and it will be taken down,” he told reporters. BJP leader Keya Ghosh later confirmed the demolition on social media, writing: “Remember this abomination in front of Salt Lake stadium?
Political symbolism and stadium revamp

The sculpture had become a recurring political flashpoint in Bengal. A day after taking oath as the BJP’s first chief minister in the state, Suvendu Adhikari had reportedly stated that the structure would be removed. Then the Messi controversy happened, and the government lost power,” he said, referring to the disorder and vandalism during Lionel Messi’s proposed ‘GOAT India Tour’ event at Salt Lake Stadium last year.

‘Illegal infiltrators must be removed': PM Modi says Bengal is fed up with TMC misrule

A high-stakes legal showdown has unfolded in India’s Supreme Court between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court has issued notices over ED allegations linked to I-PAC raids, restrained state police action against ED officials, and ordered preservation of CCTV footage.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and ED clash in India's Supreme Court

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Friday launched a protest in Kolkata against the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a day after the central agency conducted raids at the office of I-PAC. Banerjee criticised the detention of Trinamool Congress MPs in Delhi, accusing the BJP-led central government of suppressing democratic protest and misusing law enforcement agencies. She said dignity and respect in a democracy are non-negotiable, asserting that citizens and elected representatives cannot be treated arbitrarily by those in power. Earlier in the day, several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs were detained in the national capital on Friday for protesting outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's office against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on the I-PAC office. In a post on X, CM Banerjee wrote, "I strongly condemn the shameful and unacceptable treatment meted out to our Members of Parliament. Dragging elected representatives on the streets for exercising their democratic right to protest outside the Home Minister's office is not law enforcement - it is arrogance in uniform. This is a democracy, not the BJP's private property. Democracy does not function on the convenience or comfort of those in power. When BJP leaders protest, they expect red carpets and special privileges. When opposition MPs raise their voices, they are dragged, detained, and humiliated. This double standard exposes the BJP's idea of democracy - obedience, not dissent." "Let it be clear: respect is mutual. You respect us, we respect you. You drag us on the road, and we will drag you back to the constitutional idea of tolerance, dissent, and democratic morality. This is our India. We are citizens by right, not at the mercy of a chair, a badge, or a position of power. No government, no party, and no Home Minister gets to decide who deserves dignity in a democracy," the post read. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) accused Banerjee of entering the residential premises of Prateek Jain, the director of top political consultancy group I-PAC, during its ongoing search operation in Kolkata and taking away "key evidence", including physical documents and electronic devices. In a statement, the ED said that its team was conducting the search proceedings in a peaceful and professional manner until the arrival of the West Bengal Chief Minister, along with a large number of police officials.

Mamata Banerjee leads protest in Kolkata against ED over I-PAC raids

The political and legal confrontation in West Bengal intensifies as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) faces sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The controversy centers on ‘green files’ seized during recent ED raids, prompting a multi-party legal battle at the Calcutta High Court involving the TMC, ED, and IPAC.

Mamata has accused the federal agency of politically motivated actions, stating, “But this paper was our paper. You forcibly snatched it from our house.” She has also called for mega protests, framing the crackdown as a political vendetta ahead of upcoming polls. Meanwhile, the BJP questions who she is trying to protect, and the Congress has expressed concerns over the handling of documents during an active investigation.

West Bengal Tensions Escalate: Mamata Banerjee Clashes With ED Over ‘Green Files’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the Union Government following Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at the IPAC headquarters and the residence of its co-founder, Pratik Jain. The Chief Minister personally visited the raid sites in Kolkata, allegedly retrieving documents during the ongoing operation. Banerjee accused the central agency of acting as a political tool for the BJP to access the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) confidential campaign strategies and candidate lists ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
