Each Diwali brings new trends in firecrackers, from sparklers to rockets, but this year’s dangerous novelty is the ‘carbide gun’ or ‘desi firecracker gun’. Marketed as toys, these homemade devices are causing severe harm, especially to children. In just three days, over 122 children in Madhya Pradesh have been admitted to hospitals with critical eye injuries, and 14 have lost their sight permanently. The worst affected area is Vidisha, where markets openly sold these dangerous devices, despite a government ban issued on October 18. These carbide guns, priced between Rs 150 and Rs 200, are created using plastic or metal pipes filled with gunpowder, matchstick heads, and calcium carbide. When ignited, they explode like bombs, releasing shrapnel and burning chemicals that can severely damage the eyes. 17-year-old Neha, who is recovering at Hamidia Hospital, shared her experience: “We bought one of these homemade guns, and when it exploded, one of my eyes was completely burned. Now, I can't see.” Another victim, Raj Vishwakarma, described how he tried to make a similar device after watching videos online. "It exploded in my face, and I lost my eye," he was quoted as saying. In response, the Vidisha police have arrested six individuals for selling the dangerous devices. Police Inspector RK Mishra assured, “We’ve taken immediate action, and those responsible for manufacturing or promoting these guns will face legal consequences.” Hospitals in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior are overwhelmed with young patients, especially at Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital, where 26 children were admitted within 72 hours. The Madhya Pradesh state government has made a significant move to enhance the production of fruits and provide new job opportunities for women. The state government will implement the 'Ek Bagiya Maa Ke Naam' scheme in the state from August 15, 2025. Under this, women belonging to self-help groups (SHGs) will be able to plant a garden of fruit trees on their land. The cost of preparing this garden will be done by the state government. Under the 'Ek Bagiya Maa Ke Naam' scheme, fruit orchards will be developed by cultivating 30 lakh horticultural crops for livelihood generation at an expense of around Rs 900 crore on 30 thousand acres of land of 30 thousand women belonging to self-help groups at the state level. The women applicants included under this scheme should have land between from half an acre to one acre. Women in whose households property is in the name of father, husband or father-in-law will be able to pant a garden in this scheme on the basis of their consent letter. 50 fruit plants will be grown in half an acre. Money will be provided by the state government under MNREGA for digging pits and buying plants. The government will also supply wire fencing for protecting plants, a 50 thousand liter water tank for irrigation, upkeep for 3 years and organic manure. A grant of approximately 3 lakh rupees will be provided within three years for the building of a garden. Panchayat and Rural Development Department's National Rural Livelihood Mission has been entrusted with the work of selecting the eligible beneficiaries. Application for this will be accepted up to July 15, 2025. Women beneficiaries will be chosen through the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' app. The government has made a decision to include only 30 thousand women under this scheme in the first year. 100 women beneficiaries will be chosen in each block. In this project, land and plant selection will be scientifically carried out using SIPRI software. So that the right plants can be chosen based on the nature of the soil and weather. At what time and when the plants are to be planted, source of water monitoring also will be carried out through SIPRI software. One Krishi Sakhi will be appointed on every 25 acres, who will help the chosen beneficiaries. Plant trees get ₹3 Lakh This Indian state rolls out new scheme for women. Heres how to apply

The gardens will be monitored through drones and satellite pictures. The project 'Ek Bagiya Maa Ke Naam' work of fruit tree planting will begin in the state as a campaign from August 15, 2025 and will continue up to September 15, 2025.

Under the scheme, 'Ek Bagiya Maa Ke Naam', the work of planting fruit trees will start from August 15 and will continue till September 15.

In an unusual bid to increase sales of his liquor shop, the owner in India’s Madhya Pradesh tried to lure people with a “spoken English” class along with a drink or few. The owner’s business scheme, however, didn’t last as he received a fine of Rs 10,000 (119.42 USD) from authorities.

The owner of a liquor shop at Nachankheda in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh tried to boost sales of his shop by highlighting the general tendency of people to become more expressive after drinking. He even put up a signboard to advertise his unique scheme, but it failed as police officials asked him to pay a penalty for illegal signboards.

According to police, the owner had displayed a banner near his shop with the message, “Dindahade English Bolna Seekhein (Learn to Speak English in Broad Daylight).” Under the message, there was an arrow pointing towards the liquor shop.

Although it was not clear if the poster sent his sales to a new high, a photo of it went viral on social media, generating both chuckles and criticism.

The banner image also reached the district administration on Saturday, an official said.

Burhanpur District Collector Bhavya Mittal said they directed the Excise Department to take action against the liquor seller. Excise officials then served a notice to the shop licensee.

In his defence, the shop owner claimed innocence and said the banner was put up on private land of another person, which is 40-5- feet away from his shop.

He also said that some other person allegedly had placed the banner as part of a conspiracy. However, officials weren’t convinced much with his side of the story.

Terming his reply unsatisfactory, the authorities fined him Rs 10,000 for flouting the conditions of his liquor licence, the official said.

The locals were furious over this signboard and said that it would send a wrong message to young people who might get influenced by the "learn English" sign and end up getting sloshed at the liquor shop.

Some also believed that the sign was “misleading” as it looked like an advertisement for a Spoken English coaching centre.
