Mayank Yadav's blistering pace powered Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to an impressive 28-run win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday (Apr 2). The right-arm pacer from Delhi picked up three wickets which left the RCB batting lineup reeling after it had been struggling big time, coming into the match.&nbsp;

Defending a competitive target of 182, skipper KL Rahul summoned Yadav into the attack in the sixth over with RCB one down. On the very first ball, Yadav hustled opposition captain Faf du Plessis who rushed to take a suicidal single, only to find himself miles short of the crease.

From thereon, Yadav imposed himself completely on the match and picked up the wickets of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell in one over. Both Australian batters were dismissed after failing to adjust to the thunderbolts being thrown by Yadav.&nbsp;

While Green was castled clean, Maxwell miscued a pull after failing to get under the 150+ kmph delivery. The pacer returned for his final spell in the 15th over and took the wicket of Rajat Patidar as well.&nbsp;

Such was Yadav's performance that former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop called him 'child of the wind' while Dale Steyn was left speechless by the raw pace and precision of the youngster.&nbsp;

RCB did attempt to wage a fight at the end with impact sub Mahipal Lomror swinging for the fences but even he could not hold the innings together as RCB folded up on 153.&nbsp;

<h2>LSG's topsy-turvy batting</h2>

Put into bat first, LSG were off to a solid start, courtesy of Quinton de Kock who took on the RCB bowlers. A returning KL Rahul tried to match him but fell to the guile of Glenn Maxwell, whose contribution with the ball has so far outweighed his batting gains.&nbsp;

Devdutt Padikkal's poor form with the bat continued and he fell prey to Mohammed Siraj by top-edging one to wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat.&nbsp;

Desperate to get a move on, QdK attempted to up the ante but Yash Dayal bowled some tight lines and kept a tight lid on the scoring rate. The right-handed bowler suffered an injury that ruled him out of the tournament, the franchise revealed in a video posted on their social media handles. Without mentioning the nature of the injury, Mavi said he would miss the tournament.

“I will miss [the tournament] a lot. I had come here after an injury and had thought I would play matches for my team and do well. But unfortunately, I will have to leave because I have suffered an injury,” Mavi said in the video.

The newly inducted IPL franchise bought Mavi for INR 6.4 crores at this year’s auction, but the all-rounder hasn’t played a competitive match since August 2023.&nbsp;

Mavi also said he will be cheering for his team from the sidelines.&nbsp;

Veteran England fast bowler David Willey will miss the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season for Lucknow Super Giants after the news was confirmed on Wednesday (Mar 20). Willey, part of the LSG squad as one of the foreign players, will be away for personal reasons. The news was confirmed by head coach Justin Langer with no replacement being announced as Willey is expected to return to India after a short break.

"With Mark Wood pulling out of the tournament and also David Willey won't be coming now either, that means we lack some experience," Langer said when asked about LSG's pace attack. "But what I've also seen in the last couple of days is that we have enormous talent. Some of our guys have had some injuries but they all look very fit at the moment."

"They look fit and healthy and they're very hungry, so we'll just have to manage them well so that we can get them through and work through the whole tournament, not just the start of the tournament. We've got one overseas player up our sleeve if required, where we might be able to add some experience."

Willey on Monday played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final for Multan Sultan where he ended on the losing side. Multan lost the final by two wickets to Islamabad United with Willey being part of the majority of the campaign. His involvement in several franchise competitions saw him stay away from his family.

Willey was signed for $240,000 (INR 2 crore) by LSG during the auction and has previously played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the past. IPL 2024 Auction: Full list of players released and retained by Lucknow Super Giants

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants have appointed former Australia batsman Justin Langer as the head coach. The move comes after LSG decided not to extend coach Andy Flower's two-year contract which ended after IPL 2023.

Under Flower, LSG reached last four in both previous seasons but failed to reach the final. Notably, Flower was appointed the head coach in LSG's maiden year in the league - 2022.

Langer, however, has never coached in IPL but has taken Perth Scorchers to three Big Bash League (BBL) titles. He also was the head coach of Australian side which won their maiden T20I World Cup in 2021 in the UAE.

Speaking on his appointment, the former Aussie said, "Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL. We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward."

Langer made the comments in a statement released by the IPL franchise.

Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Super Giants franchise, said, "I have enjoyed my interactions with Justin Langer. He seems to bring in a huge amount of aggression and a lot of clarity."

LSG's Director of Cricket Gautam Gambhir has previous ties with Langer. During the 2014's edition of now-defunct Champions League, Gambhir and Langer had spoken on the sidelines. The chat results in Gambhir travelling to Perth to work on his game and mental fitness.

Meanwhile, the franchise thanked Andy Flower in a heartfelt message posted on social media. "Dear Andy, Today it's farewell, but it'll never be goodbye because you'll always be one of our own. Thank you for everything!," read the tweet by LSG with Flower's picture.

Lucknow Super Giants have produced standout performances in back-to-back Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons on the field, however, the franchise owned by by Sanjiv Goenka, also pulled off stunning accomplishments off the field during the course of the season. With the Indian Premier League going back to the home-and-away format this year, the Super Giants grabbed their opportunity of engaging with their home fans for the first time.

The franchise’s 360-degree integrated marketing campaign highlighted fan engagement in over 100 sites across Uttar Pradesh, several on-ground activations to build LSG’s 6000+ strong fan club “LSG Brigade”, as well as extensive coverage across online and print media in multiple languages.&nbsp; The team led by KL Rahul reached the playoffs of the IPL 2023 before they faced elimination in the Eliminator.

The season kicked off with a glitsy jersey launch event in the presence of BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, key players like KL Rahul and Krunal Pandya among others, and was streamed live in eight major cities across Uttar Pradesh.

In addition, the Lucknow Super Giants conducted Jashn-e-LSG – an open bus roadshow with the team from Rumi Darwaza to Ambedkar Park in the City of Nawabs. The roadshow was followed by the world’s first-ever cricket-themed drone show, with spellbinding still and motion pictures captured and shared across social media.

The BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium hosted IPL matches for the first time, and the franchise worked closely with the UPCA and stadium authorities to make the necessary infrastructural upgrades to ensure that the venue met international standards.&nbsp;

The Lucknow Super Giants’ initiatives resulted in around 3 lakh passionate fans thronging the stadium throughout the season, at an average of an almost full-capacity (50,000) crowd for Lucknow’s first-ever season at home. Furthermore, LSG and Lucknow Metro worked together to provide special late-night trains and feeder buses to make it easier for fans to head back home after matches. A fleet of e-rickshaw shuttle rides was also organised at the stadium.

Speaking about the off-field initiatives, Vinod Bisht said, “Forming an emotional connect with the cricket fans in Uttar Pradesh was critical for us and therefore we were thrilled to see that our initiatives paid rich dividends. Attracting big crowds to a new IPL venue was always going to be a difficult task, but our team emerged victorious in challenging circumstances.”

Kolkata Knight Riders batter Rinku Singh needs no introduction now after his exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The left-hand batsman, after his final innings of the current season, joined an elite list of uncapped players who have scored 450 or more runs in a single season.

The incident happened as a controversial no-ball call was upheld as legal delivery by both on-field and third umpire after SRH decided to review it. SRH batsman Heinrich Klassen, who was at the crease during that over, wasn't really pleased with the decision, and got into an argument with the on-field umpires as well.

As the bowler, Avesh Khan, geared up to bowl his next delivery, LSG's head coach Andy Flower and mentor Gautam Gambhir started pointing towards the stands behind them and the on-field umpires rushed there immediately. There were chants of 'Kohli, Kohli' as well by the crowd in an apparent dig at Gautam Gambhir who recently had a scuffle with Virat Kohli in LSG vs RCB match.

SRH batsman Klassen, however, didn't condone the crowd's action and said that it broke the momentum of batting as well. "Disappointed with the crowd to be honest, that’s not what you want. That also broke the momentum, not great umpiring either," said the batsman during his mid-match interview.

As for the match, LSG&nbsp;chased down a target of 183 in 19.2 overs and seven wickets left, thanks to Prerak Mankad who hit unbeaten 64 off 45 balls and Nicholas Pooran who scored a fiery unbeaten 13-ball 44.

Samad then added a few more runs in the last over as SRH finished 182/6 in 20 overs and Samad stayed unbeaten on 37 off 25.

Earlier, SRH had won the toss and elected to bat first at their home ground. LSG took the first wicket quickly as Abhishek Sharma (7 off 5) was sent back by Yudhvir Singh in the third over for a team total of 19 runs.

Rahul Tripathi (20 off 13) and Anmolpreet Singh then added quickfire 37 runs in 21 balls before Tripathi was caught behind off Yash Thakur. Anmolpreet (36 off 27) &nbsp;was the third wicket to fall on a team total of 82 runs off Amit Mishra who took a brilliant return catch to dismiss him.

A video released on the LSG Twitter account on Sunday saw players from the team wave a final goodbye to Wood before he departed to England.

"For the birth of my daughter. So, sadly, but for a good reason to go home. Hopefully, I might be able to come back and hopefully, you will be able to see me again. I am sorry that unfortunately I have not played more and in the four games that I have managed to play, I have managed to get a few wickets and hopefully, I can charge in again," the England speedster said.

"It's a great team togetherness here. I really love the team, the backroom staff are fantastic and it has been great to see the lads do well over different parts of the tournament," Mark Wood said in the video.

LSG have endured a tough couple of weeks having lost the services of skipper KL Rahul who injured his hamstring while playing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while Jaydev Unadkat also had a shoulder issue. With Wood’s departure, the situation only gets tougher for the franchise while they sit third in the league with 11 points.

"One last push and get into those playoffs and make it to the finals. That's the goal and as a group, we understand that. It is tough in sports, you win some and you lose some but the lads are training hard. There are some fantastic characters in the group and they really try everything for your team. So keep believing and back them up, and I am sure they'll come good," Wood concluded.

LSG will next take the field on Saturday, May 13 when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. A win for LSG will see them cement their place in the top four while a defeat could be a spanner in the work with only three matches remaining of the league phase of the season.

As Lucknow Super Giants tail-enders looked for the final run on the last ball of the match against RCB, Bangalore bowler Harshal Patel desperately tried to knock non-strike batsman out via MANKAD.

LSG's last batsman Avesh Khan came to the crease on the last ball with his team requiring one run to chase down a mammoth 213. Patel started running and LSH non-strike batsman Ravi Bishnoi started backing up and the bowler tried to take Bishnoi out but missed it. Had Patel managed to take the bails off, Bishnoi would have been out by a mile.

Harshal, as fate would have it, missed shattering of bails but tried to run out Bishnoi by throwing the ball onto the stumps, however, the cricket rules forbid it.&nbsp;

The MCC lawbook says, according to law 38.3.1.2 about dismissal states - "Even if the non-striker had left his/her ground before the instant at which the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, once the bowler has reached that point it is no longer possible for the bowler to run out the non-striker under this Law."&nbsp;

Speaking on the attempt, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis said after that match that the team backed themselves about the run-out.

"Disappointed. They played well through the middle. One ball one run. We backed ourselves to get a run-out," Faf said. “I think just looking at that wicket, the batting from overs 7 to 14 was quite slow, the wicket, but then in the last five overs the ball was coming on nicely and that carried on in the second innings. I threw all our weapons we had at them. Unfortunately, they took on one of our stronger bowlers right away, Harshal in his first two overs, but he came back well,” he further added.

LSG batters Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran scored 65 off 30 and 62 off 19, respectively to bring their team on the brink of win. With 24 required of 18 and both star batters back in the hut, drama unfolded. Ayush Badoni scored a six but got hit-wicket on the same ball when LSG needed just seven runs.&nbsp;

Harshal Patel then took two wickets in the 20th over and almost had the last one too but Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi held the nerves to scamper for a run to get LSG home.

The first two balls were decent from Bishnoi, giving away just one run.
