The 19th Asian Games got underway in Hangzhou, China, with a glittering and vibrant opening ceremony at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. With 40 different sports and 61 disciplines, athletes will compete for a total of 483 gold medals during two weeks of the sport’s greatest extravaganza this year. The commencement of the continental showdown lit up the Big Lotus, the venue initially designed as a football arena back in 2018 that can accommodate 80,000 spectators.

After the torchbearers of all participating countries were present with their respective contingents, Wang Hao, President of the 19th Asian Games, addressed the crowd. After that, Randhir Singh - the acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), gave a speech and received a huge applause from the crowd on using some phrases in Chinese language.

Chinese President Xi Jinping then officially declared the start of the 19th Asian Games during his address. Soon after, the OCA flag was hoisted, and everyone was urged to stand up during the hoisting.

Countless artists then took over the stage, showcasing the country’s culture, tradition and history via their enchanting performances. The beautiful background score and the right blend of colours during each of the performances made it a sight to behold for everyone inside the stadium and billions watching on TV.

With the perfect use of Artificial intelligence, eco-friendly technology and fireworks in the end, the opening ceremony got over, announcing the start of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Asian Games 2023: Glittering show marks inauguration of continental spectacle in Hangzhou

Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain wins her maiden gold medal in the ongoing 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championship in New Delhi on Sunday. She defeated Australia's Caitlin Anne Parker 5-2 in the 75 kg category to add another medal to her tally of two bronze medals.

With this win, Lovlina has become the eighth Indian boxer to win the top prize in this competition, and fourth this time – making it India’s joint-most successful Worlds campaign after the 2006 edition that also happened in New Delhi.

In the tight gold medal contest, both looked reserved while beginning the final round as Parker unleashed the attack on her opponent. Lovlina didn’t let her guard down and presented a counterattack to put the Australian on the back foot. As close as it appeared to be, both were on each other’s top before the match went to a bout review and by split decision, Lovlina was declared the winner.

Earlier on Sunday, Nikhat Zareen claimed her successive gold medal win in the 2023 World Championship, beating Nguyen Thi Tam 5-0 in the lightweight category.

Meanwhile, a day before on Saturday, Indian pugilists Nitu Ghanghas (48kg) and Saweety Boora (81kg) had also claimed gold medal wins in their respective categories.

The second win on Sunday saw the Indian boxers head home with four gold medals. Lovlina has now become the eighth boxer from the country to have the top prize besides her name. The others include Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006), Nikhat Zareen (2022, 2023), Saweety Boora (2023), and Nitu Ghanghas (2023).

After a grand opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Thursday, the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games began with all pomp and show yesterday. Australia dominated the day and won as many as eight gold medals.

As for India, the first day was never about medals but making sure that athletes found themselves in a spot of consideration. While the women's cricket team had a heartbreak against Australia after dominating the game for long stretches, the women's hockey team comprehensively defeated Ghana. PV Sindhu &amp; Co. managed to defeat arch-rivals Pakistan in a thumping 5-0 win in the mixed team event. Meanwhile, it may have slipped under the radar but Srihari Nataraj qualified for the finals of the men's 100m backstroke.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, today, the medals may start coming as Olympic silver medalist&nbsp;Mirabai Chanu takes the centre stage in the women's 55 kilogrammes weightlifting category. Mirabai is the heavy favourite to win the gold medal as her nearest rival has a personal best of 168kg (72kg snatch+96kg clean &amp; jerk) while Mirabai's&nbsp;personal best stands at 207kg (88kg+119kg). Similarly, pugilist Lovlina Boroghain will be up against N Ariane in round 1 of the 70 kilogrammes category.&nbsp;

The Commonwealth Games 2022 edition is set to get underway on July 29 (Friday) in Birmingham, England. The forthcoming edition has been keenly awaited by many Indian sports fanatics, especially after seeing the Indian contingnent's performance in the last year's Tokyo Olympics.

Team India is a strong squad comprising several star athletes, such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led India men's hockey team and Savita Punia's women's hockey line-up, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Manika Batra, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, etc.

Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, misses out due to a groin injury, nonetheless, there is enough firepower in the Indian contingent to impress in the upcoming event in Birmingham. Ahead of the opening ceremony, to be held&nbsp;at the Alexander Stadium, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sindhu as the flagbearer, followed by Manpreet Singh.

Being handed over such a huge responsibility, Sindhu said after the announcement on Wednesday (July 27), "It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer."&nbsp;

CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.

Indian men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh -- who led the national side to their first-ever Olympic medal after 41&nbsp;years --&nbsp;&nbsp;has been also added to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awardees list. Thus, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award -- which was earlier known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award -- will be handed over to a total of 12 sportspersons.

"A large number of nominations were received for these awards this year, which were considered by the Selection Committee headed by Justice (Retd.) Mukundakam Sharma (former Judge of Supreme Court), consisting members from eminent sportspersons and persons having experience in sports journalism &amp; sports administrator etc," the ministry stated.&nbsp;

"The gold-medallists in each weight category will represent India in the AIBA women's world championship except 69kg (as) Tokyo Olympics bronze-medalist Lovlina Borgohain will see direct qualification for the world championships," the BFI wrote on their Twitter handle. 
 
The Women's National Championships will take place at St Joseph's International School in Hisar from October 21-27. This event will also mark the return of the Elite`Women`s National Championships after a gap of more than one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The felicitation took place in Guwahati, where the boxer was conferred accolades, `Gamosa` (traditional Assamese stole), and a reward.

Earlier on Thursday, Lovlina received a grand welcome at the Guwahati airport from the state government. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the airport to receive her. Taking to Twitter, he said that the boxer has ignited a billion dreams with her success in Olympics.

Lovlina took the bronze medal after she lost the women`s welterweight (64-69kg) semi-final bout to Turkey`s Busenaz Surmeneli in the Olympics.
