Uncertain Chelsea future: What's next for Romelu Lukaku after being dropped for Liverpool clash?

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side's crucial match against Chelsea will go ahead on Sunday despite three new coronavirus cases in his camp as another Premier League fixture was called off.

Klopp refused to name the players on Friday as they were awaiting test results but forward Roberto Firmino and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were absent from pictures released by Liverpool of a club training session.

Both sides will regard the match at Stamford Bridge as a must-win game as they seek to keep pace with defending champions Manchester City, who are eight points clear at the top.

"We have three new Covid cases in the team and a few more in the staff so it's not so cool at the moment," Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.

"I'm not able to say who it is because we have to do the whole process, get a proper PCR (test), but you will see the day after tomorrow on the team sheet -- it will be pretty clear who is affected or infected."

The German, whose side are third in the table, a point behind Chelsea, added: "We never had this proper outbreak where 15 to 20 players had it. For us it is every day, another one, stuff happens more and more often.

"It's like a lottery in the morning, waiting for the result. It is pretty much day-by-day, always one case, then another one.

"In this moment (we will) probably not (ask for a postponement) but we don't know how it will look in a few hours."

In addition to the three Covid cases, the injured Takumi Minamino and Thiago Alcantara will miss the trip to Chelsea.

Klopp's comments came as Southampton's Premier League match at home to Newcastle on Sunday was postponed due to Covid cases in the visitors' camp.

The game at St Mary's is the second in Premier League matchweek 21 to be postponed, following the announcement on Thursday that the New Year's Day clash between Leicester and Norwich was off.

Arteta absence

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was frustrated to miss Saturday's match against City as he isolates following a second positive test.

"It will be very strange," said Arteta, whose team are fourth in the table. "I will need a big room so I can walk and move a little bit, because I won't be able to stand on my sofa."

The Spaniard, who also had coronavirus in March 2020, added: "It is a big, big game for us and it is a very frustrating thing to not be able to be there helping the team.

"But I will do my best from here, with everything that I can do, and we have prepared for every scenario possible and they know what we have to do."

Wolves boss Bruno Lage admitted even his players were unsure if they would be fit to face Manchester United on Monday after a virus outbreak forced the postponement of this week's trip to Arsenal.

"After 10 days without playing, in your mind, to be ready to play is difficult," said Lage. "Today I was talking with a player and I asked 'are you ready to play?'

"He said: 'I really don't know'. After 10 days without playing and training you are slow to take the right decisions."

Liverpool's boss Jurgen Klopp reveals three players COVID-19 positive before Chelsea trip

Wasteful Liverpool missed the chance to close the gap to leaders Manchester City after slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Liverpool had a host of chances, including a Mohamed Salah penalty, but failed to score in the Premier League for the first time in 29 games as Ademola Lookman's second-half goal was enough for Leicester to snatch victory.

Tottenham Hotspur also endured a frustrating afternoon after they were held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man Southampton while West Ham United moved above them into fifth place after an impressive 4-1 victory at Watford.

Elsewhere, bottom club Norwich City's troubles continued with a 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Liverpool came into Tuesday's contest trailing leaders City by six points after the champions beat Leicester 6-3 on Boxing Day.

With an additional few days break after their own Boxing Day clash against Leeds United was called off due to rising COVID-19 cases at the Yorkshire club, Liverpool looked much fresher than an injury-hit Leicester from the off at the King Power Stadium.

After dominating the early stages, Salah won a penalty but, for the first time in 16 Premier League attempts, failed to find the net, as Kasper Schmeichel made a fine save.

The chances kept coming, but the title-chasers' wastefulness proved costly as Lookman hammered home what proved to the winner in the 59th minute, moving Leicester up to ninth in the standings.

"Definitely, it was well deserved (for Leicester)," Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp told Amazon Prime. "It was a very strange game. We were just not good enough.

"We still had enough chances. What we did with the balls was just not right. We played a really bad game, so it was well deserved."

CONTE'S LATEST RECORD

Antonio Conte became the first manager to go unbeaten in his first seven league games in charge of Spurs but he was left disappointed with a solitary point.

James Ward-Prowse gave the Saints a deserved lead midway through the first half, but the home side found themselves down a man after Mohammed Salisu tripped Heung-min Son to concede a penalty and pick up a second yellow before the break.

Harry Kane converted the spot kick, and the England captain had a superbly taken second ruled out for a narrow offside in the second half.

"We have to be disappointed because you have to exploit the situation against 10 men," said Conte.

"To play after 44 hours is not easy because you need to recover from the last game. Maybe the fatigue caused bad decisions especially when we arrived in their box," he added.

West Ham hadn't won in three league games and Watford went into the clash after seeing their last two games postponed due to COVID-19 cases.

The Hornets got off to the perfect start when Emmanuel Dennis fired them into a fourth minute lead with a fine left-foot effort from the edge of the box.

But West Ham responded superbly and drew level in the 27th minute with a first-time drive from Tomas Soucek who connected with a fine pass from Jarrod Bowen.

Two minutes later, Said Benrahma put the visitors ahead, drilling home after Michail Antonio had cut in from the left and slipped the ball into the Algerian's path.

The impressive Bowen had an effort ruled out by VAR but the Hammers did double their advantage through a Mark Noble penalty and substitute Nikola Vlasic completed the rout, slotting home after more good work from Bowen.

Frenchman Odsonne Edouard scored one and created two for Palace as they easily dealt with Dean Smith`s Norwich at Selhurst Park.

The former Celtic forward opened the scoring with a sixth minute penalty and then set up Jean-Philippe Mateta for the second.
It was 3-0 shortly before the break when Edouard danced into the box through a crowd before the ball fell to Jeffrey Schlupp, who smashed home.

Manager Brendan Rodgers slams 'ridiculous' schedule as Leicester City faces Man City and Liverpool in 48hrs

COVID-19 cases in the visiting teams have forced the postponement of the Liverpool v Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers v Watford games scheduled for Boxing Day, the Premier League announced on Thursday.

The number of Premier League games called off due to COVID-19 outbreaks is now up to 12 in the last two weeks but the League said it was their intention to continue playing fixtures "where safely possible".

"Following postponement requests from Leeds United and Watford as a result of COVID-19, the Premier League Board met this morning and regrettably agreed to call off the two affected clubs' Boxing Day fixtures," it said in a statement.

"The Board today was able to make its decisions in advance of Boxing Day to give clarity to clubs and their supporters. We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused to those fans` festive plans."

The League said Leeds would have been unable to fulfil the fixture due to a number of players with COVID-19, injuries and illness.

Leeds said all the COVID-19 cases they have experienced are asymptomatic. The club`s training ground will be closed for two days on the advice of Public Health England.

Watford, who have already had two games called off this month, continue to have an insufficient number of players to field a team, the League said.

"Due to players coming out of isolation, it is fully expected Watford will be available for their fixture on Tuesday 28 December, against West Ham United," the League added.

Premier League: Liverpool v Leeds, Wolves v Watford games postponed amid rise in COVID-19 cases

Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Leicester on penalties after a pulsating League Cup quarter-final ended 3-3 at Anfield as Tottenham and Chelsea also made the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Spurs were 2-1 winners over West Ham and will face Chelsea in the last four after they needed two late goals to see off Brentford 2-0.

Liverpool will take on Arsenal in the semi-finals over two legs in January.

All three matches went ahead in front of full crowds despite the worrying rise of coronavirus case numbers that had seen last weekend's Premier League schedule decimated by call offs.

Leicester's previous two fixtures had been called off due to a combination of a coronavirus outbreak in the squad and a mounting injury list.

However, Brendan Rodgers was able to name a close to full strength side on his return to Anfield and it showed early on against a much-changed Liverpool.

Jamie Vardy struck twice inside the first 13 minutes as he angled a drive across Caoimhin Kelleher and then tapped in Patson Daka's pass from close range.

Jurgen Klopp had made 10 changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Tottenham on Sunday with Liverpool also depleted by four positive Covid cases.

However, it was one of their more experienced starters who got them back in the game as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain smashed home from the edge of the area.

Leicester restored their two-goal cushion before half-time thanks to James Maddison's piledriver from 30 yards that flew past Kelleher.

Klopp introduced three first-team regulars at half-time and one of them, Diogo Jota, gave Liverpool life again 22 minutes from time.

Kasper Schmeichel then needed to produce a stunning save to deny the Portuguese a second, but Leicester still could not hold out as Takumi Minamino sent the game to penalties in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Minamino then missed with the chance to win the tie from the spot in the shootout, but Kelleher saved from Luke Thomas and Ryan Bertrand before Jota fired home the winning penalty.

Bergwijn ends goal drought

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte showed his determination to end the club's 13-year trophy drought as soon as possible as he named Harry Kane among a strong starting line-up.

But it was the other two of Spurs' front three who were on target in north London.

Steven Bergwijn scored his first goal of the season after two clever one-twos with Pierre Emile Hojbjerg.

Tottenham's lead lasted just three minutes as West Ham seized upon Eric Dier's slack pass and Jarrod Bowen fired low past Hugo Lloris.

Two minutes later it was 2-1 as Bergwijn this time turned provider for Moura to prod home from close range.

"In England it's very difficult to win something," said Conte, who will come up against his old club in the last four.

"It's good for Tottenham to reach the semi-finals of this competition. You can see the names of these teams that have reached the semi-finals - Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal with us - so every side wants to try to lift this trophy."

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel handed debuts to academy prospects Harvey Vale, Jude Soonsup-Bell and Xavier Simons with the Blues short of seven players due to a Covid outbreak.

However, Tuchel emptied his bench in the second half with the introduction of N'Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Reece James and Jorginho.

And that extra quality made the difference as Pontus Jansson turned James' cross into his own net 10 minutes from time.

Jorginho then stroked home a penalty after Pulisic had been upended in the box.

Ten league games have been postponed this month due to outbreaks and 90 new COVID-19 cases were detected among players and staff in the past week, but clubs agreed on Monday to fulfil the busy festive fixture schedule.

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said it was "absurd" to play twice in four days while missing a number of key players due to COVID-19 and injuries, while Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said players` health and safety was at risk.

"I am worried about player welfare and I don`t think anybody takes that seriously enough, especially in this period, when COVID is here," Henderson told BBC Sport.

"There is no communication with players in terms of what they think ... I think (players) need to be a part of the conversation because, ultimately, we are the ones that are going out and feeling it and playing it.

Player welfare not taken seriously: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson reacts as PL continues amid Covid scare

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed referee Paul Tierney has a "problem" with him after Tottenham's Son Heung-min punished Alisson Becker's blunder to rescue a thrilling 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Klopp's side recovered from Harry Kane's early strike to move in front thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Andrew Robertson.

But South Korea forward Son equalised after Alisson missed his attempt to cut out Harry Winks' pass.

Liverpool held on for a point despite having to play the final 13 minutes with 10 men following Robertson's dismissal for an ugly hack on Emerson Royal.

Klopp was booked after protesting over two key Tierney decisions, insisting Kane should have been sent off and Jota deserved a penalty.

The German took aim at Tierney in a post-match blast, saying: "I have no idea what his problem is with me.

"I was a bit more emotional in the game. I'd have preferred the right decisions on the pitch.

"Kane was definitely a red card. For the penalty, the referee told me he thinks Jota stops on purpose. It is incredible.

"He had the best spot on the pitch and doesn't give it. You will have to ask him what his problem is with me."

For the first time in four years, Liverpool won't be top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day.

The Reds are three points behind leaders Manchester City, who thrashed Newcastle 4-0 earlier on Sunday.

After winning their previous eight games in all competitions, Liverpool once again left London frustrated having lost at West Ham and drawn at Brentford this term.

The pulsating encounter was a welcome antidote to the coronavirus mayhem which has engulfed the Premier League, with six games postponed this weekend.

Amid calls for the Christmas programme to be postponed to stem the virus spread, Klopp said: "We play now on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday. That is impossible.

"We do not have the players. We could maybe have another case or two. We have to think about it, we cannot just push it all through. If we don't play any more and have a break I am fine."

Tottenham had been hit the hardest by Covid, with Liverpool's visit their first game in a fortnight after matches against Rennes, Brighton and Leicester were postponed.

Nine of Antonio Conte's squad contracted the virus and some of them remain in isolation.

Liverpool weren't immune either and, just hours before kick-off, Thiago Alcantara tested positive, while Jordan Henderson was sidelined by a non-Covid illness.

Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones remained absent having missed Thursday's win against Newcastle after testing positive.

Racing onto Tanguy Ndombele's pin-point pass into the Liverpool area, Kane guided a clinical finish into the far corner in the 13th minute.

It was only Kane's second Premier League goal of a difficult season for the England captain.

Rush of blood

A feisty affair grew more heated after Kane was only booked for a studs-up foul on Robertson that could easily have been a red card.

Liverpool equalised in the 35th minute as Robertson darted into the area and clipped a precise cross towards Jota, who powered a header past Hugo Lloris for his 11th club goal of the season.

Jota appealed in vain for a penalty moments later, going down under heavy contact from Emerson.

Seconds after Trent Alexander-Arnold's push on Dele Alli failed to yield a Tottenham penalty, the right-back popped up with a driven cross that Robertson headed home from close-range in the 69th minute.

But Alisson's rush of blood gifted Tottenham a point five minutes later when he charged out of his area and missed Winks' pass, leaving Son with the simple task of slotting into the empty net.

"We are keeping an open mind as to what caused the explosion but given how it has happened, out of caution, counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation," it added.

As per investigators, the car involved in the blast was a taxi. It exploded shorty after pulling up at the hospital in northwest England.

Images and videos of the burning car were being circulated online.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is considered one of the best and sought after managers in the history of the English Premier League, some even say best in the world. He is known for his team management skills, but his comments on managing a country are also valuable.

Klopp said the system should be such where people should be elected in top positions to sort the problems. The voting should not be based on "most funny" or the "weirdest haircut". There should right people in the system.

Klopp has said that the elections of Donald Trump, the former US president, and Boris Johnson, the current UK prime minister, were a "bad sign" for the whole world.

"They should be, but what is the problem, the people we vote for or the whole system which gives us the opportunity to vote for these kinds of people? "Because everybody knew beforehand that it would not work, but we still let it happen as a society. I cannot believe that. But one is now gone, the other one struggles still. It's incredible. We have to find a system where we can bring people in the position to sort all our problems, or help us with sorting the problems, who are the best possible people."

Carabao Cup: Manchester City's League Cup domination ends after defeat vs West Ham

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down suggestions he will step down from his role after Sunday`s 5-0 defeat by Liverpool in the English Premier League. Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick at Old Trafford as United slipped to seventh on the league table, stretching their winless run in the league to four matches.

Solskjaer`s position has come under more scrutiny after Sunday's defeat but the Norwegian vowed to stay and fight for his job.

"I do believe in myself," Solskjaer told reporters. "I do believe that I`m getting close to what I want with the club. I think what we`ve done, what I`ve seen, the development. Of course, the results lately haven`t been good enough, I have to say, and that`s... hands up. And that brings doubt in anyone`s mind, probably. But I`ve got to keep strong and I do believe in what we`ve been doing."

United are eight points behind league leaders Chelsea and play away to Tottenham Hotspur in the league on Saturday before travelling to Italy three days later to face Atalanta in the Champions League group stage.

"Today`s rock bottom, low in confidence," Solskjaer added. "But, you know, the next week it`s Tottenham away. It`s a Champions League game, Atalanta, the next team who visits us is Manchester City.

"We have to look forward. We have to sort the frame of minds out and make sure we go into the next training session in the next game with the right frame of mind."

The wax figure has one finger on each hand pointing to the sky, which is Salah's signature goal-scoring celebration. The Egyptian forward was all smiles when he was inspecting the wax figure as he reacted: "That looks exactly like me, it is like I am looking into the mirror. Does he have abs or no?" Salah later said, "It's a blessing to be recognised and immortalised in this way. It's been an amazing experience working with the artists at Madame Tussauds London to create my first ever wax figure." Mohamed Salah scored another brilliant individual goal and Roberto Firmino hit a hat-trick as Liverpool ruined Claudio Ranieri's first match as Watford manager with a 5-0 victory on Saturday.

Salah underlined why Liverpool are so desperate to get the Egypt forward to sign a new contract with his audacious second-half strike at Vicarage Road.

Dancing through the Watford defence, Salah's magical moment topped even his eye-catching goal against Manchester City before the international break.

Liverpool's habit of avoiding big contracts for players over 30 has fuelled fears the 29-year-old will leave when his present deal expires in 2023.

But with 10 goals in 10 games this season, Salah has proved his huge value to Liverpool, who will surely bow to his wish to be paid alongside the Premier League's highest earners.

For the first time in his career, Salah has scored in eight successive top-flight matches.

Salah's breathtaking goal stole the spotlight on a day when Firmino claimed his first Liverpool treble since 2018 in his first start for five league games.

It was also a memorable afternoon for Senegal forward Sadio Mane, who became only the third African player after Salah and Didier Drogba to reach a century of Premier League goals, a milestone encompassing his time at Southampton.

The Reds are the first English top-flight side to score three or more goals in seven consecutive away games in all competitions.

Liverpool, unbeaten in eight league matches this season, moved above Chelsea to the top of the table, although the Blues can reclaim pole position if they beat Brentford later on Saturday.

Ranieri could not have asked for a tougher start to his reign after he replaced the sacked Xisco Munoz during the international break.

The Italian, back in the Premier League after his title-winning spell with Leicester and stints at Chelsea and Fulham, will hope this dismal display was not a sign of things to come.

Glorious Salah

Having drawn their previous two league matches before the international break, Liverpool couldn't afford another slip and they tore into Watford from the start.

Liverpool held over 80 percent of the possession in the first half, with Salah tormenting Danny Rose time and again down the right flank.

It was no surprise when Klopp's team took the lead in the ninth minute.

Salah nudged Rose aside with ease and unfurled a glorious pass with the outside of his boot that evaded the entire Watford defence as it arrowed towards Mane, who applied the finishing touch with a first-time shot into the bottom corner.

It was almost too easy for Liverpool and Firmino was the next beneficiary of the visitors' supremacy in the 37th minute.

A superb move cut through the Watford defence as Mane's deft pass found James Milner's overlapping run and his cross was perfectly weighted for Firmino to tap in his fourth goal this season.

A deflected drive from Liverpool's Naby Keita hit the bar just before a half-time whistle that was greeted with boos from frustrated Watford fans.

Unable to muster a single shot in the first half, Watford's backs remained against the wall and Salah's curler was tipped away by Ben Foster.

Liverpool were showing no mercy and Firmino notched their third goal in the 52nd minute.

Salah was in an offside position when Andrew Robertson crossed, but Craig Cathcart's sliding intervention deflected the ball to Firmino, who finished from close range.

If that was a no-frills strike, Salah's 54th-minute goal will be remembered for years to come.

Collecting Firmino's pass in the Watford area, Salah swivelled away from three defenders with an audacious ball-roll, then left Cathcart on his backside before guiding a superb finish into the far corner.

Firmino completed the demolition with a simple finish from Neco Williams' cross in the final seconds.

Mohamed Salah scored another brilliant individual goal and Roberto Firmino hit a hat-trick as Liverpool ruined Claudio Ranieri's first match as Watford manager with a 5-0 victory on Saturday. Glorious Salah Having drawn their previous two league matches before the international break, Liverpool couldn't afford another slip and they tore into Watford from the start. Mane's milestone strike came in his 224th appearance for the Reds, breaking Palace's rearguard action late in the first half at Anfield.

Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and Guinea midfielder Naby Keita netted in the second half to move Jurgen Klopp's team three points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

It was fitting that Mane should make it to his century against Palace as he set a new Premier League record for the most consecutive games a player has scored against one opponent.

It was the ninth successive match that Mane had netted against Palace.

More importantly for Klopp, Mane already has four goals this term, suggesting he is ready to put last season's disappointing personal campaign behind him.

After Liverpool's lacklustre, injury-hit defence of the Premier League title, they are back in the groove in the chase to regain the trophy from Manchester City.

Klopp's men have opened the season with an unbeaten run of four wins from five games, with just one goal conceded and 12 scored.

French defender Ibrahima Konate, signed from Leipzig in the close season, was handed his Liverpool debut as one of six changes from the midweek Champions League win over AC Milan.

Klopp switched his entire back four, with Virgil van Dijk returning, James Milner playing on the right instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas replacing Andy Robertson.

Mane stars

Initially, Liverpool seemed unsettled by Klopp's alterations and Palace nearly took advantage of a defensive blunder that ended with Alisson Becker pushing Wilfried Zaha's shot onto the post.

Diogo Jota led the Liverpool response as the Portugal forward fired across goal from a tight angle.

Jordan Henderson scored Liverpool's winner against AC Milan and the England midfielder was close to netting again when his half-volley from Mane's cross forced Vicente Guaita to make a good stop.

Jota missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock, firing over from three yards after the ball was palmed out to him by Guaita.

But Mane ended Palace's spirited resistance in the 43rd minute.

Salah's header from Tsimikas' corner was saved by Guaita and Mane pounced to slam the rebound past the Palace keeper.

Alisson had to make a fine save from Joel Ward's drive to preserve Liverpool's lead at the interval.

Palace were inches away from earning a second-half penalty when Conor Gallagher was tripped right on the edge of the area.

Christian Benteke wasted the free-kick, before Van Dijk headed just over at the other end.

Keita's shot was repelled by Guaita, who scrambled to his feet to deny Salah's follow-up attempt.

Salah wouldn't be denied a goal for long and the Egypt star delivered the knockout blow in the 78th minute.

Van Dijk helped on a Liverpool corner and Salah was perfectly placed to slot home at the far post.

Keita, on as a second-half replacement for Thiago Alcantara, put the seal on Liverpool's stroll when he volleyed in from the edge of the area in the 89th minute.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has termed 18-year-old tennis player Emma Raducanu as "talent of the century". Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez of Canada in the finals of the US Open to win her maiden Grand Slam."I watched the final, and it was absolutely impressive. It`s been a long time since I watched a full women`s tennis game, to be honest, and I was really impressed by the power, speed, and the whole game. Women`s tennis is obviously in a brilliant moment," Goal.com quoted Fernandez as saying.

"These two girls were 18 and 19, and what they showed was massively impressive. Both during the game itself, and then during the trophy ceremony. Both girls, how they spoke, at 18 or 19, that was inspiring to be honest, even more so than the tennis! I was absolutely overwhelmed by the way the two girls presented themselves," he added. Further talking about Raducanu, Klopp said: "That`s what you can take from it. If you are 18 years old and you win the US Open, there is one thing that has obviously happened in the last 10-15 years; hard work. She is for sure the talent of the century, but without hard work, it is not possible to be there."

"To see her there and smiling during the game, it really was the nicest thing I could imagine. I will for sure watch women`s tennis much more now than I did in the last few years," he added.US Open champion Emma Raducanu jumped 127 spots in this week`s WTA Rankings, moving from No. 150 to No. 23, while runner-up at New York, Leylah Fernandez moved to No. 28.For the first time in six years, Britain has a new top player in Emma Raducanu. The teenager started the year at No. 345 (11 best among British women), but her ranking has been on a rapid climb in the past three months. The Briton has won 21 of her past 25 matches. After reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon as a wildcard, Raducanu`s ranking improved from No.338 to No.179, helping her secure a spot in qualifying at the US Open.By winning the US Open as a qualifier, Raducanu earned 2,040 points and jumped 127 spots to No. 23. She also overtakes Johanna Konta as the highest-ranked woman from Britain.

Liverpool made it two wins from two at the start of the new Premier League season as they cruised to a 2-0 home victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Diogo Jota edged Liverpool in front with his second goal in as many games in the 18th minute, a brilliant header in front of a first full Anfield in 17 months.

Burnley, the team who last season ended Liverpool`s 68-match unbeaten home league run, a record that stretched back almost four years, had chances to level, but their final ball was lacking at the crucial moment.

Ashley Barnes thought he had levelled early in the second half, only to be denied by the offside flag, with Liverpool capitalising on their reprieve in the 69th minute, as Sadio Mane drilled home their second.

The hosts pressed for a third, urged on by a buoyant crowd, but they settled for two, and a second clean sheet of the campaign, to go top of the standings, and leave Burnley pointless from their opening two matches.

European champions Chelsea treated a large Stamford Bridge crowd to a dazzling display, with goals from Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah making it a forgettable day for Palace's new manager Patrick Vieira.

Chelsea are earmarked as the side most likely to challenge champions Manchester City for the title and they did nothing to suggest otherwise as they made do without new signing Romelu Lukaku who is still observing quarantine restrictions after his 97.5-million-pound ($135 million) move from Inter Milan.

Spanish left back Alonso fizzed a free kick into the top corner to put Chelsea in charge in the 27th minute while U.S. forward Christian Pulisic followed up on the rebound to double their lead five minutes before halftime.

It was homegrown defender Chalobah's goal that raised the biggest cheers though, having been out on loan for three seasons in England and France.

"We were pretty sharp," Tuchel, whose side won the European Supercup on Wednesday, said. "It looked easier than it was.

"Some players we pushed with 120 minutes over the line already and they stepped up again. We set our standards as high as possible. It was a huge team effort."

United were equally impressive as they ran riot against Leeds United having been pegged back to 1-1 when a Luke Ayling thunderbolt cancelled out Fernandes's first-half effort.

Mason Greenwood fired United back in front before Fernandes added a quickfire third to put Solskjaer's side in command and the Portuguese completed his treble with another fine finish before Brazilian Fred completed the rout.

United gave new signing Jadon Sancho a late substitute appearance while they also have Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani to come back after missing Saturday's rout.

"It has been a very, very good day," Solskjaer said. "When Bruno gets goals like this, timing his runs, it does not really matter who scores. We definitely have loads of forwards who can chip in. He will not have that burden on himself."

Van Dijk, whose ACL injury was a big factor in Liverpool's mediocre defence of their title last season, had a comfortable return as his team brushed Norwich aside.

Mohamed Salah grabbed the third goal after assists for Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.

Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez marked the start of his Everton reign with a 3-1 victory over Southampton at Goodison Park.

Everton trailed to a goal by Saints debutant Adam Armstrong but hit back with Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all scoring after the break.

Leicester City began with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers with the ever reliable Jamie Vardy on target while Watford marked their return to the top flight with an impressive 3-2 win over Aston Villa as Emmanuel Dennis and Cucho Hernandez both scored on their debuts.

Brighton and Hove Albion won 2-1 at Burnley.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool all served notice of their title intentions with crushing wins as the Premier League enjoyed a return to its familiar format on Saturday.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool all served notice of their title intentions with crushing wins as the Premier League enjoyed a return to its familiar format on Saturday. With full-capacity crowds back for the first time since March 2020, Manchester United got things going in the early kickoff with a 5-1 hammering of Leeds United as Bruno Fernandes netted a hat-trick and Paul Pogba making four assists. Chelsea then outclassed Crystal Palace 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in one of five 3pm kickoffs before Liverpool, with key defender Virgil van Dijk back after a nine-month absence, eased to a 3-0 win at promoted Norwich City. 🎯 Marcos Alonso's strike was @ChelseaFC's 5️⃣0️⃣th direct free-kick goal in #PL history, with only Man Utd (64) netting more in the competition#CHECRY pic.twitter.com/syrSaMiOT8 — Premier League (@premierleague) August 15, 2021 × While the three points were important to respective managers Thomas Tuchel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Juergen Klopp -- they all acknowledged it was a special day for England's top flight with the empty stadiums of the COVID-19 era replaced by the sounds of passionate fans. "You get the butterflies again," Solskjaer said. "Suddenly it's a game that matters." Klopp applauded Liverpool's travelling fans and the Norwich faithful at Carrow Road. "The occasion was great. It was exactly what we expected and what we'd missed for so long," Klopp said. "I applauded the Norwich fans as well because it's so nice to have fans back, wherever they come from." The injury will rule the Scotland international out of Liverpool's Premier League season-opener at newly-promoted Norwich City on Saturday.
