Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti hopes his team can be at their peak to give them a chance of winning Saturday`s Champions League final against Liverpool at the Stade de France but is pragmatic enough to know that may still not be good enough.

Liverpool are unbeaten since March, have lost just three games this season and have already claimed two domestic cups, although they just missed out on the Premier League title, while Real romped to the LaLiga crown with a month to spare.

"I think we are in a great moment and will do our best to win on Saturday but sometimes your best isn`t enough to succeed," Ancelotti told a news conference on Friday.

"Soccer is about intangibles that sometimes you can`t control. We deserved to get to the final but to win it it`s not about what you did before, it`s about what happens on the pitch during the big game.

"We have to plan a game where we can show our qualities. The collective commitment, the individual quality and the impact that the substitutes make in important moments. The game will be won by the team who manage to fit the game to their strengths."

Ancelotti said that in his four previous Champions League finals as a manager - becoming the first coach to win the European Cup three times with two different clubs - the one he could not forget was AC Milan`s 2005 loss to Liverpool.

The Reds had seemed out of contention but came from three goals down at halftime to level before winning a shootout.

"That team was probably the best I`ve coached in a final," Ancelotti said ahead of a game in which he will make history by being the first to manage in five Champions League finals.

The Italian is also on the verge of leapfrogging Bob Paisley and Zinedine Zidane to become the first manager to win the European Cup four times.

"Unfortunately, in football there is that unpredictability that you cannot control. It`s difficult to explain," he added.

"Just like it`s hard to explain how we scored twice in one minute from the 90th minute against (Manchester) City (to win 3-1 in the second leg of this year`s semi-final).

"These things happen and you have to accept it. You don`t have to think about it too much either. Football always offers a chance for redemption and that happened two years later (when Ancelotti`s Milan side won the 2007 final against Liverpool)."

Saturday`s game gives Liverpool a chance of revenge for their defeat by Real in the 2018 final and Ancelotti does not think Real will have a fitness advantage despite having time to rest key players after wrapping up the LaLiga title early.

He recalled that his 2014 Real team arrived at the final with several injured players and still managed to beat local rivals Atletico Madrid.

"Liverpool will try to impose an intense game, with a lot of verticality (quick transitions) ... We have to be ready to respond at the highest level," said Ancelotti.

Carlo Ancelotti hoping Real Madrid's best will be enough to beat Liverpool

Manchester City claimed their fourth Premier League title in five years after defeating Aston Villa in the final day of the season. The encounter was an absolute nail-bitter as Pep Guardiola’s team came back from 0-2 down to register a brilliant victory at the Etihad Stadium. This was the second consecutive league trophy for City as they finished on 93 points with 99 goals scored in the season.

Liverpool won their game against Wolves 3-1 but it had no impact on the championship scene as they ended on 92 points from 38 matches. Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson scored for the Merseyside giants after Sadio Mane cancelled out the opener from Wolves midfielder Pedro Neto.

Both sides went into the final day of the season needing victories to secure the tile but City were down 0-2 with just 30 minutes to go in the match. Matt Cash handed Aston Villa an 0-1 lead and Phillippe Coutinho doubled their lead as things were looking bad for the defending champions.

However, City slammed three goals in just five minutes to complete a superb comeback in front of their home crowd. Ilkay Gundogan started the onslaught with a well-placed goal followed by a deft touch from Rodri to level the scores and it was Gundogan once again who scored the winner.

Manchester City claim Premier League title with thrilling victory on final day

Liverpool may have a historic quadruple in their sights, but manager Juergen Klopp insisted that pressure is not a factor as his side prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the Premier League season.

Liverpool, who have already won the domestic cup double, must beat Wolves at home on Sunday and hope leaders Manchester City falter against Aston Villa to secure the league title.

"I cannot talk about pressure for the other team, but for us there is no pressure," said Klopp, whose team will also contest the Champions League final against Real Madrid in a week`s time.

Liverpool were beaten to the title by City on the last day of the 2018-19 season. Klopp said they would continue to make life difficult for Pep Guardiola`s side even in the case of a repeat on Sunday.

Mahrez could have become City`s hero in the 86th minute but his spot-kick was kept out by keeper Lukasz Fabianski after Craig Dawson brought down Gabriel Jesus in the penalty box.

The result guaranteed West Ham European football next season as they stayed seventh on 56 points.

The game also marked Mark Noble`s farewell game in front of home fans, with the midfielder set to bring the curtain down on his 18-year, one-club career at the end of the season.

Premier League: Manchester City lose crucial points with draw against West Ham

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp told his side to stop behaving as if they had attended a funeral after a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday dealt a serious blow to their title challenge and handed the advantage to Manchester City.

Luis Diaz rescued a point for Liverpool as they went top of the Premier League on goal difference, but City can open up a three-point gap with a win against Newcastle United on Sunday.

"First and foremost, we should stop behaving like it is a funeral," said Klopp. "I didn`t say that to the boys but it`s a little bit the mood here. We still talk about football and these kinds of things can happen. In my life, much worse things happened and I`m still here."

The German added that he did not expect champions City to slip up with four matches remaining.

"The only chance we have is if something goes our way. Imagine City lose, I can`t see it, but imagine if they do and we lose it (the title) because we don`t believe any more. That would be crazy," said Klopp.

'It's not a funeral': Klopp urges Liverpool to put Tottenham draw behind them

A first-half strike from midfielder Naby Keita helped Liverpool secure a hard-earned 1-0 win at Newcastle United on Saturday as Juergen Klopp`s side kept their Premier League title hopes alive and provisionally went top of the table.

The victory put Liverpool two points ahead of champions Manchester City, who can regain first spot with a win at Leeds United later on Saturday. Newcastle are ninth on 43 points.

"It`s the most difficult of circumstances. A team in form, a crowd waiting for ages for proper success," said Klopp. "Our people were outstanding and Newcastle are obviously a really passionate crowd. Winning here is special."

After an early half-chance for Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool hit the front in the 19th minute through Keita when he cleverly dribbled past Martin Dubravka to slot home following a smart link-up with Diogo Jota.

The goal was met with furious protests by Newcastle players who reckoned James Milner had fouled Fabian Schar in the build-up but the VAR allowed the effort to stand.

Liverpool, with possibly one eye on the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Villarreal on Tuesday, started without Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold but their absence was seldom felt as the visitors were barely troubled in the opening exchanges.

Sadio Mane had a glorious chance to double Liverpool`s lead from a counter-attack but the Senegal forward`s side-footed effort was comfortably kept out by Dubravka, who was called into action again when he tipped over Jota`s 41st-minute header.

With Liverpool dominating possession, Newcastle`s best moment of the half arrived when Miguel Almiron had the ball in the net after being played through by Bruno Guimaraes, only for the Paraguayan to be flagged offside.

"Coming here with five changes and building pretty much a new setup is really difficult, so the performance was absolutely outstanding. I loved it. We controlled the game in so many ways," added Klopp.

"The only plan they had was the long ball to our right side... you can`t really defend them properly because it’s always these long balls. It`s really difficult to get a feeling for the game."

Liverpool had a flurry of chances after the break but failed to beat Dubravka, who twice denied Jota as well as substitute Salah before Luis Diaz hit the side-netting in the 84th minute.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said his side never got going despite the opposition not being at their best.

"We competed well but lacked the quality that could have got us a goal. It is difficult to do it consistently against Liverpool... we were much more aggressive in the second half but did not have any concerted pressure in the game," he said.

Premier League: Liverpool keep pressure on Man City with 1-0 win at Newcastle

An own goal and a Sadio Mane strike earned Liverpool a 2-0 victory in their Champions League semi-final first-leg against Villarreal on Wednesday, putting Juergen Klopp`s side on course for their third European Cup final in five seasons.

After the drama of Tuesday`s other semi-final, which saw Manchester City beat Real Madrid 4-3 at the Etihad, it was never going to be easy for this game to compete in the entertainment stakes.

But Liverpool did enough to build themselves a solid lead for Tuesday`s return game in Spain where they will be confident of finishing off the job.

Villarreal defended in numbers in the first half to frustrate the six-times European Cup winners, with Thiago Alcantara going closest to breaking the deadlock with a thunderous strike from distance that hit the post.

There were several half-chances for Liverpool with Jordan Henderson drilling into the side netting and Mohamed Salah floating an effort wide, while Mane saw a deflected effort zip just past the post.

But for the most part Unai Emery`s defence coped well, with Pau Torres in command at the back and the central midfield pairing of Dani Parejo and Etienne Capoue protecting the area in front of them.

Liverpool turned it up a notch after the break and moments after Brazilian midfielder Fabinho had seen one effort ruled out for offside, Henderson`s cross was deflected into his own net by Pervis Estupinan to break Villarreal`s resistance.

Able to express themselves with the deadlock broken, Mohamed Salah threaded a sublime pass through for Mane to put the game beyond the visitors 133 seconds later.

Liverpool`s pressing was too much for the Spaniards at times and they had chances to make the result more comprehensive.

Andy Robertson had a fine effort ruled out for offside after connecting with a sweeping cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Virgil van Dijk tried his luck with a long-range thunderbolt which nearly knocked Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli off his feet.

Anfield showed its appreciation at the final whistle but in truth this was a game that felt more like a group-stage match than a last-four encounter.

"They are a very organised team and we knew they would make it difficult. It was just important that we kept going and believed that we would eventually break them down. We did that with two good goals," said Henderson.

"Majority of the game, our counter-press was really good. It made it difficult for them. But the game is still alive and it will be tough in Villarreal."

Liverpool breeze past Villarreal to close in on UEFA Champions League final

Six-time champions Liverpool welcome Spanish giant killers Villarreal at Anfield for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. Wion's Priyanka Sharma spoke to Football Coach and Analyst Matt Holland to set up the clash.

Champions League Semi-finals : Liverpool vs Villarreal Preview

Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after a 2-0 win at home over local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. While the win late on Sunday means Liverpool are just a point behind City as they look to win four titles this season, Everton drop into the bottom three after Burnley`s win earlier in the day.

Liverpool had 82 per cent of the ball against their neighbours, but it was not until the 62nd minute that left-back Andrew Robertson opened the scoring with a header. Luis Diaz was the provider of Liverpool`s second goal with a spectacular overhead kick that sat up perfectly for Divock Origi to seal the win, Xinhua reports.

Earlier, Gabriel Jesus scored four goals as Manchester City cruised past relegation-haunted Watford 5-1.

The Brazilian scored in the 4th, 23rd and 52nd minutes, and also netted a 49th-minute penalty as Pep Guardiola`s side enjoyed an easy ride ahead of Tuesday`s Champions League semifinal first leg against Real Madrid.

Hassani Kamara gave Watford brief hope with his goal in the 28th minute, but Rodri`s 34th minute goal for City quickly put the game out of reach.

Christian Pulisic scored a 90th minute goal to give Chelsea a 1-0 win at home over West Ham and spare Jorginho`s blushes. The Brazilian had missed a penalty a minute earlier after Craig Dawson, who was sent off, pulled down Romelu Lukaku to deny him a goalscoring opportunity.

Arsenal moved fourth and virtually ended Manchester United`s slim hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to first half goals from Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka, who scored a penalty.

Although the 100th Premier League goal of Cristiano Ronaldo`s career gave United hope in the 34th minute, Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the visitors, and Granit Xhaka assured a big win for Arsenal with 20 minutes left to play.

Tottenham were lucky to take a 0-0 draw away to Brentford, who had former Spurs player Christian Eriksen in their starting 11.

Brentford had the best chances with Harry Kane clearing one ball off the line, while Ivan Toney hit headers off the woodwork.

Matej Vydra`s goal from the edge of the six-yard box gave Burnley their second win in two games as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Turf Moor. The win lifts Burnley out of the bottom three and means they have taken two wins and a draw since Sean Dyche`s 10-year tenure as coach came to an end.

Newcastle United continued their excellent second half to the season and have won 10 of their last 14 games thanks to a 3-0 win away to Norwich that came from two goals from Joelinton and one from Bruno Guimaraes.

Brighton and Southampton shared four goals in an entertaining south coast derby, with James Ward-Prowse scoring in first-half injury time and in the 54th minute to cancel out Danny Welbeck`s early opener and Mohammed Salisu`s 44th minute goal for the home side.

Leicester City and Aston Villa drew a forgettable game 0-0, although the result at least ended a run of four consecutive defeats for the visitors.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool comfortably beat old rivals Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday (April 19) to move top of the Premier League, for 24 hours at least.

Liverpool moved to 76 points from 32 games with title rivals Manchester City on 74 points from one game fewer, with Pep Guardiola's side hosting Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Colombian Luis Diaz gave Liverpool a fifth-minute lead, tapping in from close range after Sadio Mane set Mohamed Salah free down the right and the Egyptian delivered a pinpoint low cross for a simple finish.

In the seventh minute, both sets of fans paid tribute to an absent Cristiano Ronaldo by standing and applauding.

On Monday Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez, who announced in October last year they were expecting twins, said one of the two babies, a boy, had died.

United's problems, however, got worse in the 10th minute when Paul Pogba limped off injured and with Ralf Rangnick's side struggling to get any foothold in the game, it was no surprise when the home side doubled their advantage.

Mane again provided the spark with a superb first-time pass finding Salah who, having lost his bewildered marker Diogo Dalot, cut in from the right and provided his trademark left-foot finish.

The creator turned finisher in the 68th minute, as Mane made it 3-0 after Andy Robertson broke down the left and then Salah completed the rout five minutes from the end.

'You'll Never Walk Alone': Man Utd and Liverpool fans unite to show support for grieving Ronaldo - Watch

Liverpool`s two-goal hero Mohamed Salah said Manchester United made it easier for them in Tuesday`s 4-0 victory at Anfield, which sent Juergen Klopp`s team to the top of the Premier League. The home side were 2-0 up inside 22 minutes and United never even hinted at mounting any kind of comeback.

"They make our life easier in the midfield and in the back, they always try to give us the ball in a one against one situation so it makes our life much easier," said Egyptian Salah.

Liverpool won the reverse fixture 5-0 at Old Trafford in October and Salah noted his side`s defensive record as well as their prolific scoring.

"When we defend we had a clean sheet here and a clean sheet there, so they make our life easier," said Salah.

"We just want to score one goal and once we get the first, go for the second, once we get the second go for the third. It was a top performance from us here and away also. Hopefully carry on like this," he added.

United`s Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes was clear that the performance was well below the standard expected by the club`s supporters.

"The fans don`t deserve us to play this way. They deserve more from us. The way they stay and applaud us, they deserve more. We have to raise our level higher," said Fernandes, who rejected the idea that the players were not trying.

"I think everyone runs. I think there is effort from everyone. I don`t think someone does not give 100%. We have to do it for ourselves, the clubs, the fans and everyone," he said.

"We have to say things but that is kept in the dressing room. Now it is over we have to think of the next game."
The Portugal playmaker said the difference between the two teams was evident.

"Liverpool is ready for the title. We are not. I don`t need to be here saying about the difference of the level. We have to look at ourselves, from top to bottom and understand what is going wrong," he said.

United slipped to sixth in the Premier League and are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, having played a game more.

EPL: Cristiano Ronaldo to skip Manchester United-Liverpool clash after death of his newborn son

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp played down his team`s chances of winning an unprecedented quadruple this season even as they defeated Manchester City to reach the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Liverpool hung on to win 3-2 against City and will meet the winners of Sunday`s other semi-final between Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the May 14th final.

The Merseyside club won the League Cup in February and are second in the Premier League, having also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League to remain on track for a haul of four trophies this season.

"I think a game like today shows it even more how unlikely it is to do something like that," Klopp told reporters when asked about their quadruple hopes.

"We went through against City... and in three days we play again against Manchester United, who with their three points and the results from Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, the fight for the Champions League is open for all of the three.

"Then in a few days we play Everton... then we play Villarreal, (which) will not be a friendly game. Then Newcastle United and all these kind of things, so it`s just incredibly intense and it is really unlikely the team will win all the games," he added.

"But I couldn`t care less, to be honest. It is just, let`s go for it, let`s try to win the next game and then we will see how we can recover between now and then."

Forward Sadio Mane, who scored twice, said winning the quadruple is a "dream".

"We have a lot of games to go, we will try to do our best," he said.

Jurgen Klopp plays down talk of quadruple win after Liverpool beat Man City to reach FA Cup final

Manchester City remained one point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings after the pair cancelled each other out in a pulsating 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The clash lived up to its blockbuster billing right from the off as City flew out of the traps, racing into a fifth-minute lead after Kevin De Bruyne`s strike was deflected past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Liverpool responded well and levelled eight minutes later through Diogo Jota, assisted by a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold pullback, before the momentum shifted again as Gabriel Jesus gave City the lead once more in the 36th minute.

It was the first time Liverpool had trailed at the break in the Premier League this season, but they did not need long to restore parity, with Sadio Mane equalising after being picked out by a Mohamed Salah pass 46 seconds into the second half.

Raheem Sterling thought he had again given the hosts the advantage in the 63rd minute, only for the former Liverpool forward to be ruled offside following a VAR review.

Both sides had openings to settle the match, but neither could find a winner to leave a fourth Premier League crown in five seasons in City`s hands, as they moved on to 74 points, one ahead of their title rivals, after having both played 31 games.

Premier League: Liverpool and Manchester City play out 2-2 draw in crucial encounter

The big European nights in football are back and just eight teams remain in the race to be crowned Champions League winners. Three Spanish teams and three English teams remain alive and two of the Premier League's leading lights get the quarter-finals underway. Six-time champions Liverpool are at Benfica and WION's Football Pundit Matt Holland sets up the clash with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Six-time champions are in contention for a record four title

Leaders Manchester City were held to a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday as the Premier League title race took yet another dramatic twist.

With nearest challengers Liverpool having cut the gap to three points with their victory at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, their eighth successive league win to remain in City's rear-view mirror, the onus was the champions to respond.

City dominated in the first half at Selhurst Park, but could not find a breakthrough.

The post was rattled in the opening period by Joao Cancelo and again after the break by Kevin De Bruyne as the visitors were left frustrated time and again.

Pep Guardiola's men threw everything at Palace late on, but could not find a winner as they dropped two valuable points in their quest to make it four league titles in the last five seasons.

The stalemate means Liverpool can close to within one point of City if they win their game in hand against Arsenal on Wednesday, raising expectations the title race will go right to the wire.

"Luck doesn't exist in football," Guardiola told the BBC. "We have to score goals and we didn't do it.

"We played to score goals and concede few. We struggled a little bit. The team that was there today was there before and will be there in the next game. I am very pleased with the performance and the way we played."

City soon settled into their rhythm and dominated possession as they often do in South London, creating several promising early openings – Bernardo Silva missing the most glaring of them.

Defender Aymeric Laporte also seemed to have left his shooting boots at home as he blazed over with the goal at his mercy, reacting first to the rebound after Cancelo's long-range shot had come out off the post.

Palace looked a danger on the break, with Wilfried Zaha firing wide from a good position, but otherwise it was one-way traffic, with City having 14 first-half efforts at goal.

The last side to stop City scoring in the Premier League was Palace in October, and another shutout was looking more likely as chances continued to come and go for City.

De Bruyne's arrowing second-half strike seemed destined for the bottom corner but came out off the upright, with Mahrez denied by a brilliant stop from Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita from the rebound.

Silva almost got on the end of a fizzing low cross but arrived a fraction too late, with City putting a bit too much on passes, or taking an extra touch at key moments.

Premier League: Title race heats up as Manchester City drop points against Newcastle United

The 2019-20 winners Liverpool narrowed the gap with Premier League leaders Manchester City to just three points after a thumping 6-0 win at home to Leeds United. Two penalties from Mohamed Salah and a close-range finish from Joel Matip put Liverpool 3-0 up at the break against a rival that, as usual, looked lively in attack and vulnerable in defense.

Sadio Mane netted a fourth for Liverpool in the 80th minute after Salah and Jordan Henderson combined to give the Senegalese forward an open goal on Wednesday night. There was still time for two more goals, as Mane netted his second and Liverpool`s fifth in the 90th minute from close range. Virgil van Dijk then added a sixth with a powerful header from a corner as his side sounded out a warning to Pep Guardiola`s Manchester City, reports Xinhua.

City are at the top of the table with 63 points from 26 matches with Liverpool now moving to 60 off 26. Chelsea are placed third with 50 points but have a match to play.

Meanwhile, in other matches on the night, Watford coach Roy Hodgson had an unhappy reunion with his former club as Crystal Palace won 4-1 at Vicarage Road to deepen Watford`s relegation worries.

Although Moussa Sissoko quickly canceled out Jean-Phillipe Matete`s 15th-minute opener for the visitors, Conor Gallagher continued his excellent form with a 42nd-minute effort to restore Palace`s lead and two late goals from Wilfried Zaha gave the final score a sheen that flattered the visitors.

Burnley gave their survival hopes a huge boost at the expense of Tottenham`s European ambitions, thanks to Ben Mee`s powerful header which gave them a 1-0 win at home to Antonio Conte`s side.

The win is only Burnley`s third of the season but their second in two games and leaves them just two points behind Newcastle United and Everton and three behind Leeds, who have played two more games.

Premier League: Liverpool beat Leeds to move to within 3 points of table-toppers Man City

When a relentless Manchester City pipped Liverpool to claim the Premier League crown in 2019 it was widely regarded as one of the most epic title races in top-flight history.

After a stunning plot twist in the latest round of fixtures, this season's run-in has the potential to be every bit as compelling with City and Liverpool the protagonists again.

When Liverpool stumbled around Christmas, dropping seven points in three games, it looked for all the world as though Pep Guardiola's City were running away with it.

Churning out win after win the champions opened a 12-point lead in January while Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was having to make do without forward duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane -- both away at the African Cup of Nations.

Liverpool began their game struggling Norwich City on Saturday nine points adrift with a match in hand, but when they still trailed to Joel Matip's fluke own goal with under half an hour left it appeared they were about to suffer a knockout blow.

Mane, Salah and Luis Diaz turned it around, however, and later in the day City were stunned by out-of-form Tottenham Hotspur, losing 3-2 at home -- their first defeat since October ending a run of 14 wins and a draw in 15 games.

"It looks like we could have title race" chimed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher in his role as Sky Sports pundit. Even with his red-tinted glasses on, he is right.

Liverpool, who have won their last eight games in all competitions, host Leeds United on Wednesday.

Win that and they will be three points behind City with both teams having 12 games left to play.

EPIC FINALE

Throw in the fact that their goal differences are almost identical and that City host Liverpool on April 9, no wonder people are recalling the epic finale to the 2018-19 season.

At the same juncture of that season, Liverpool were leading with 65 points from 26 games, with City on 62.

If Liverpool beat Leeds it will be 63-60 in City's favour.

The Tottenham result was more than likely a blip for City and they will no doubt start compiling another winning run, but Liverpool are building the sort of momentum Guardiola's side enjoyed when winning their last 14 games in 2018-19 to claim the title with 98 points to Liverpool's 97.

"Saturday's swing underlines why you can't hand out the Premier League prizes in January or February," former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said in the Mail on Sunday.

"The truth is Manchester City and Liverpool are closely matched so a one-club procession was never on the cards. Either would be worthy champions. It promises to be a fascinating race and the weekend added to the intrigue."

Liverpool, who have the distraction of the League Cup final this weekend against Chelsea, play Manchester United, West Ham and Arsenal before what could be a seismic title showdown with City on April 9.

Manchester City's stumble against Tottenham Hotspur might pave way for another epic title duel

Fans do a lot for their favourite player. Over the years, we have heard several stories where a fan has gone out of his, or her, comfort zone to express love and gratitude for a particular player or team. Recently, a six-year-old young boy won hearts on the internet with his heartwarming note for his favourite player, i.e. Swindon Town Football Club (STFC)'s striker Harry McKirdy.

The youngster, known as Joe, wrote to the club revealing he cannot afford to attend matches because his mother “has no money for food”. In addition, the boy explained that his family doesn't have enough money as his mother has to pay for his “dinner at school.” “I like Swindon Town Harry McKidy. I will come one day,” the handwritten note read.

Receiving his note, the Swindon Town FC's official Twitter handle shared a post and captioned it, "We have received this letter from Town fan Joe, aged 6 and a half. We'd really love to get in touch with Joe, but we don't have a return address. If anyone recognises the writing or thinks they know who Joe is, please email supporters@swindontownfc.co.uk"

Liverpool closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to nine points as Diogo Jota`s doubled earned Juergen Klopp`s side a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Thursday. After City`s 2-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday extended their advantage at the top, second-placed Liverpool needed to issue a response, edging in front in the first half at Anfield thanks to Jota`s close-range finish.

Mohamed Salah came off the bench to rapturous applause to make his first appearance since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, with the Egyptian striker curling a sumptuous effort against the post as Liverpool pressed for a second.

That second did not look like it was going to come as chances continued to come and go, but Jota remained ruthless in the penalty area, drilling home the game-clinching goal three minutes from time.

The win moved Liverpool onto 51 points from 23 games, with leaders City having played one game more, while Leicester`s poor season continued as they remain languishing down in 12th in the standings.

"I always like to get into those spaces," Jota told BT Sport. "I was lucky enough to be in the right place and to score.

"There was obviously an established front three (at Liverpool before he joined) but we have more options now and that is good for the team."

Another of those attacking options is Luis Diaz, who was handed his Premier League debut by Klopp after signing for Liverpool during the January transfer window, with the Colombian showing off his skills to get fans off their seats early on.

Trent Alexander-Arnold forced Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel into a fine save, before Andrew Robertson almost got on the end of a low cross at the back post.

When Liverpool finally made their pressure pay, the goal came via a familiar source, with Jota reacting quickest to Schmeichel`s save to keep out Virgil van Dijk`s header from a corner.

Leicester beat Liverpool in the reverse fixture between these teams earlier in the season, but they never looked like getting back into the game at Anfield.

Salah`s introduction re-energised the hosts, with Liverpool`s top goalscorer twice denied by Schmeichel, before then hitting the woodwork.

The dazzling Diaz was then next to be denied by Schmeichel, before Jota made one count, squeezing his 12th league goal of the season home to put the game to bed.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said he was staying positive that Mohamed Salah would sign a new contract at the club and said contract negotiations were nothing to worry about.

Egypt international Salah, the Premier League`s top scorer this season with 16 goals, is contracted to Liverpool until 2023 and maintains that he wants to stay at the club.

Contact negotiations are in progress and in an interview with GQ magazine, the 29-year-old Salah said he was not demanding "crazy things", but added the situation was in the club`s hands.

The subject inevitably turned to Salah when Klopp spoke to reporters in his news conference ahead of Liverpool`s League Cup semi-final against Arsenal on Thursday.

"I`m very positive about it but I don`t think it makes sense that you speak on behalf of the fans because I`m pretty sure the fans are not as nervous as you are," Klopp said.

"They know the club pretty long and know the people dealing here with the different things pretty long, so I think there are enough reasons for being positive. But as long as it is not done we cannot say anything about it.

"But, good conversations -- that`s what I can say."

Former Chelsea player Salah has been a fundamental part of Liverpool`s success under Klopp, scoring 111 Premier League goals in four-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.

His interview with GQ, in which he said whether he stays or goes "is not in my hands" would have worried Liverpool`s fans who adore him and sing his name with passion.

"Nowadays it`s dangerous with these interviews. We know, I know that Mo wants to say, we want him to stay. That`s where we are. These things take time, I cannot change it," Klopp said.

"There are so many things in negotiations. It`s a third party too with the agent, it`s nothing to worry about; it`s a normal process."

The first leg of the League Cup semi-final was originally scheduled for last week at Arsenal but was postponed because of the COVID-19 situation at Liverpool which resulted in the club`s training ground being closed.

Anfield will now host the first leg and Klopp says he now has a strong squad to choose from, although Salah will be missing, as will Sadio Mane, because of African Cup of Nations duty. Full back Trent Alexander Arnold and keeper Alisson are both available after being ruled out by positive COVID-19 tests.

"All players who aren`t injured or in Africa are available," Klopp said. "Trent and Ali trained yesterday. Div (Divock Origi) and Thiago not. That`s it pretty much."
