Despite a confident start, he came second for failing to seize the big moments in the following two games. He had a chance to close the contest in the second game but Momoto capitalised on his opponent's missed opportunities and stretched the game to eventually come on top.

HS Prannoy, on the other hand, moved forward to the second round with a&nbsp;straight-game win over pre-qualifier Julien Carraggi 21-13, 21-17.

India's star badminton player PV Sindhu has brought many laurels to the country. From winning two Olympic medals to topping the rankings, Sindhu has added lots of feathers to her cap. But the past few years have not been special for India's star badminton star. The Two-time Olympic medalist has consistently failed to win big tournaments and this has impacted her ranking as well. The latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings were released recently and Sindhu has suffered a major setback in her career ranking. Sindhu has slipped three places to be at the 15th position in the rankings.

PV Sindhu, who dropped out of the top 10 in April this year, has 51,070 points from 13 tournaments. She will next participate in the Canadian Open Super 500 tournament this week.

On Friday (May 26), PV Sindhu went past world No.18 Zhang Yi Man 21-16, 13-21, 22-20 in the quarter-finals to enter the semis of the Malaysia Masters. Meanwhile, HS Prannoy also emerged on top in his face-off with&nbsp;Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the quarters, winning&nbsp;25-23, 18-21, 21-13, but Kidambi Srikanth has the end of his campaign with a defeat to Indonesia’s Christian Adinata.

Srikanth started off with a bang, taking a lead in the opening game and winning it&nbsp;21-16. However, he lost steam from thereon as he went down in the following games&nbsp;16-21, 11-21 to lose the contest and bow out of the Masters. Coming into the quarters on the back of an impressive win over Japanese shuttler Aya Ohori, Sindhu was in for a tough battle. Zhang took a 5-0 lead in the first game before allowing Sindhu to make a combeack. After a&nbsp;11-10 lead, Sindhu eventually won the first game but went down in the second one.&nbsp;

In the deciding game, it was evenly poised at 12-12 before Sindhu prevailed on top in the match which went down to the wire. She ultimately claimed the third game 22-20.&nbsp;

Lastly, Prannoy beat Kenta Nishimoto after he was made to work hard in the entire game. In the first game, the Japanese gave a tough fight before losing 23-25. He came back in the second game, winning 21-18 but Prannoy had the last laugh; clinching the decider 21-13.

Towards the end, Nishimoto lost the momentum and Prannoy was in no mood to give away any&nbsp;freebies.

Malaysia Masters: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy enter semi-finals, Kidambi Srikanth bows out

India`s highest-ranked singles players, P.V Sindhu, H.S. Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikanth, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters 2023 badminton championships with contrasting wins in their respective Round of 16 encounters in women`s and men`s singles respectively, here on Thursday. 
 
Prannoy, ranked 9th in the latest BWF Rankings, continued his brilliant run in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event in the Malaysian capital, stunning All England champion Li Shifeng of China with a superb come-from-behind victory in three games on Court 1 at Axiata Arena here. 
 
Prannoy, who had started his campaign here with a hard-fought 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 win against sixth-seeded Hou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, defeated his Chinese opponent 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 in Round of 16. He will face Japan`s Kenta Nishimoto in a last-8 encounter on Friday. 
 
In the same men`s singles, Kidambi Srikanth, who won the silver medal in the 2021 World Championship, stunned Thailand`s eighth seed, Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-19, 21-19 in a 45-minute clash in the men`s singles Round of 16. 
 
Double Olympic medallist Sindhu, the sixth seed here, had it a bit easy in the women`s singles pre-quarterfinals clash as she comfortably got the better of Aya Ohori of Japan 21-16, 21-11 in 40 minutes. 
 
Sindhu, who won a silver at Rio Olympics in 2016 and followed that up with a bronze in Tokyo 2020, will lock horns with China`s Zhang Yi Man to book a spot in the semifinals. 
 
However, former World Championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen was sent packing in the pre-quarterfinals by Hong Kong`s Ng Ka Long Angus, the 28-year-old ranked 14th in the BWF Rankings. Lakhsya, who is ranked 22 in the latest singles rankings, went down 21-14, 21-19.

The day belonged to Prannoy, who caused a major upset by getting the better of the reigning All-England champion. Prannoy, who helped India win the Thomas Cup title last year, lost the first game to the in-from Chinese star, who surged ahead from an early 4-2 lead to open a 9-2 gap. The Chinese player maintained a 4-5 points advantage as he went on to win the first game 21-13. 
 
The second game was closely fought and after Prannoy and Li Shifeng exchanged the lead twice, the Indian opened up a 6-3 lead. The Chinese shuttler narrowed the gap to one point before Prannoy won a few points in succession to make it 11-7. But Shifeng tied the scores at 11-all before Prannoy grabbed the lead again at 14-13 before making it 18-13 and went on to win the game and take the match into the decider. 
 
In the third game, after the initial skirmishes, the 30-year-old Indian right-hander opened a gap from 4-4 to 8-5 before winning eight consecutive points to make it 16-5. Shifeng could not recover from that and he narrowed the gap to 16-9, Prannoy went on to win the game 21-11 and sealed a memorable win in the 70 minutes encounter. 
 
The two players engaged in 103 rallies in the match of which Prannoy won 55 and the 23-year-old Chinese won 48.

Srikanth was up against Ng Tze Yong, who was won the first set of their clash 21-19 before losing 6-21 as the Indian shuttler fought back. However, the Malaysian regained the momentum in the third set and clinched it 21-16 to put Malaysia ahead 2-1 in the final.

Satwik revealed he had never seen Srikanth cry before in his life but revealed the senior Indian shuttler was in tears after losing against Tze Yong in the final on Tuesday.“Srikanth anna was so distraught. But it’s not just his mistake though he’s blaming himself. Even I lost a match,” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

After Srikanth's defeat, India still had some hope left in the final as they expected a miraculous upset from the women's doubles pair of&nbsp;Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand against the Malaysian pair of Muralitharan Thinaah and Koong Le Pearly Tan. Satwik revealed Treesa and Gayatri were also disappointed after their loss and cried. The Indian star, however, said the final loss was not the end of the road for Indian shuttlers at CWG 2022 a they will now hope to do well in the singles and doubles events at the Games.

“Gayatri and Treesa were very disappointed after their loss and Treesa cried too. I’m happy that the pain was there. This has really fired us up, especially Chirag and Srikanth Anna. This is not the end for us and maybe the tough losses will push us to bigger results. Maybe Srikanth will win World Championship gold! Everyday is a first day,” said Satwik.

Satwik also revealed he doesn't like watching other Indian athletes during their matches as it makes him nervous. He said he didn't watch Srikanth play in the final on Tuesday but kept hearing the score and it was heartbreaking for him to see the senior player cry after his defeat.

“Actually any Indian athletes. Today morning I couldn’t watch the weightlifting girl. It’s so easy to play your own match in comparison. I walked out when Srikanth anna started, but I could still hear the score in big TV so I put loud music. It was so irritating. Then it was painful to watch him cry,” Satwik said.

One of the heroes of India's epic Thomas Cup triumph, HS Prannoy continued his rich vein of form as he stormed into the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament with a straight-game win over Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long Angus here on Thursday. The 29-year-old from Kerala, who is desperately looking to break his five-year title drought, dished out another impressive performance to outwit Ng Long 21-11 21-18 in a second round match that lasted 41 minutes.

It was Prannoy's fourth win over the 27-year-old, who is currently ranked 12th in the world. A former top 10 player, Prannoy will next face either Denmark's Rasmus Gemke or France's Brice Leverdez. 
Among other Indians in the fray, Sameer Verma ended his campaign with a 10-21 13-21 loss to world number five Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the second round.

This was Sameer's fifth loss to Lee in seven meetings. Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 16-21 13-21 to top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in women's doubles competition.

The men's doubles pairing of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila also went down 19-21 15-21 to China's Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi. In the men's singles contest, it was all Prannoy in the first half of the opening game as he simply dominated the proceedings, grabbing the initiative early to lead 11-3 with a sensational cross court jump smash.

Prannoy was, however, erratic after the interval and his unforced errors allowed Ng Long to collect a few points before the Indian unleashed another cross court smash and made some sound judgements at the baseline to keep moving ahead. Prannoy's movement was smooth as he mixed up the shots and varied the speed well and with his opponent committing errors, he had no issues in closing out the match comfortably. 
He moved to nine game point opportunities with a precise smash and sealed it when his rival went to net. 
Former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt's presence at the coach's chair also helped Prannoy as he was seen chatting with the player during the mid-game interval. Gurusaidutt is on his first assignment with the Indian team after retiring from the game.

This is Srikanth's first loss against the 36-year-old Frenchman in their six meetings.

Sen, who is in red hot form, clinched his first-ever Super 500 title this year. The 20-year-old reached the finals of the prestigious All England Championships and was also part of the Indian men's team that lifted the historic Thomas Cup crown. Interestingly, this was Prannoy's first-ever win against Sen out of their three head-to-head meetings so far.

In the doubles action, the duo of M R Arjun and Dhruv Kapila opened their account with a win, getting the better of higher ranked Japanese pair of Kelichiro Matsui and Yoshinori Takeuchi 27-25 18-25 21-19.
