Singapore Open: Sindhu enters R2, Srikanth and Lakshya bow out
Indian shuttler PV Sindhu beatDenmark's Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt 21-12, 22-20 to proceed to the second round of the Singapore Open on Wednesday (May 29). Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen bowed out of the tournament with a loss in the first round. Talking about Sindhu, she comfortably won the opening game 21-12 before she suddenly dropped the momentum to allow her opposition get back in the contest. The second and penultimate game was a nail-biter as Sindhu was on the verge of losing it, trailing 16-20, before she won six straight points and won the game 22-20. Thus, she closed the match 21-12, 22-20.
Sindhu will now lock horns with Spain's Carolina Marin, who beat Thailand'sWei Jin Goh 22-20, 21-18, in the second round. The Indian superstar is starting to return to her best as this win comes just a week post her second-place finish in the Thailand Masters.
Speaking about Srikanth and Lakshya, both saw the end of their respective campaigns in Singapore. Srikanth, whowasstruggling with a knee injury, withdrew duringthe second game against 5th seed Kodai Naraoka. By then, he had lost the opening game 14-21 and was already behind in the second, trailing 3-11. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Lakshya had an off day as he succumbed to a 13-21, 21-16, 13-21 loss toworld number oneViktor Axelsen in his first round clash.
Lakshya started off seeming clueless against the No. 1 ranked player. While he lost the opening game in a flash, the Indian youngster was up for the challenge in the second game, where he emerged on top 21-16. However, Axelson rose his game once again and relied on an aggressive brand of play for a comeback in the contest with a 21-13 scoreline in the final game. The star Indian shuttler's prowess at the net helped him remain in the contest, however, Axelson was the better player and eventually came on top.
Overall, it was Sindhu who kept the Indian hopes alive in the Singapore Open with the twin eliminationof Srikanth and Lakshya.
