Thomas Cup: 'Entire nation is elated' - PM Narendra Modi, Virat Kohli & others hail India's historic win

Indian men's badminton team created history as they thrashed Indonesia 3-0 on Sunday (May 15) to clinch their maiden Thomas Cup title. The experienced Kidambi Srikanth came up with a memorable performance against Jonatan Christie to stun him in straight sets in the third game to seal a dominant 3-0 win for India in the final of the Thomas Cup 2022.

While Srikanth and Laskhya Sen won their respective singles matches, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their doubles match to hand India a clinical 3-0 win in the final against Indonesia at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Lakshya was up against Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ginting in the first game. He was absolutely outplayed by the Indonesian in the first game as Ginting won the first game 21-8 before Lakshya produced an incredible fightback to win the second game 21-17 to force the contest into a decider.

Lakshya brought out his best in the third and final game as he outclassed Ginting 21-16 to win his match and give India a 1-0 lead in the final. India's second game in the final was arguable the toughest of the lot as the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag was up against Muhammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

The Indian duo started the match on a terrific note, taking an early lead in the first game against the seasoned Indonesian pair. However, Ahasan and Sukamuljo soon displayed their class and managed to take the first game 18-21. Satwik and Chirag were dominated by the Indonesian pair once again in the second game.

Ahsan and Sukamuljo came close to clinching the second game in a row but Satwik and Chirag pulled off a comeback for the ages to take the game 23-21. They then went on to win the decisive third set 21-19 to record the most impressive win of their careers and extended India's lead to 2-0 in the final.

Srikanth locked horns with Christie in the third game of the final with the title on the line. The Indian had lost against the Indonesia the last time they came up against each other. However, Srikanth was on a roll in the final on Sunday as he wrapped up the first game of the second singles match 21-15 to put India on the verge of a historic win.

Sikanth was brilliant in the second game as well as he led Chrsitoe 11-8 at the interval. It was a hard-fought battle between the two shuttlers but Srikanth prevailed over the Indonesian as he won the second game 23-21 to beat Chrsitie and power India to their maiden Thomas Cup title in the 73-year-long history of the tournament.

No Indian team had previously managed to reach the final of the prestigious tournament. But the Indian men's team spearheaded by Srikanth and Lakshya scripted history in Bangkok this year.

The magnitude of the title victory can be adjudged from the fact that Indian badminton great and former national coach Pullela Gopichand had compared the men's team reaching Thomas Cup final to Kapil Dev-led India winning the country's maiden cricket World Cup crown in 1983.

It was a magnificent achievement by the shuttlers as India had never reached the final of the Thomas Cup in the tournament's 73-year-long history. He also praised the doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag for providing much-needed depth to the Indian side, which it lacked before.

“This is such a significant moment. The Thomas Cup is the biggest tournament in team badminton. Making the finals means you stand eye to eye with the best nations in world badminton. The magnitude of an Indian team reaching the final is what I’d imagine the team that made the cricket World Cup finals back in 1983," said Gopichand.

Badminton Asia Championships: Indian stars Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth bow out

India's campaign at the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022 came to an end on Saturday after the country's top shuttlers -- PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth -- lost their respective semifinal matches at the Palma Stadium, here.

Sindhu lost her women's singles last-four match 14-21, 17-21 against the world No. 4 An Seyoung in 48 minutes.

Heading into the fixture, Sindhu, a former world champion had failed to beat the 20-year-old South Korean in any of their three previous meetings. The last time the two played each other, An Seyoung had denied the Indian ace the BWF World Tour Finals 2021 title.

Sindhu tried to start the match aggressively but some astonishing retrievals from An Seyoung frustrated her as the South Korean raced to a 7-1 lead.

Despite Sindhu's best efforts, An Seyoung controlled the flow of the match and won the first game 21-14.

Looking for a sharp response, Sindhu took a 3-0 lead in the second game but it was not long before An Seyoung responded and it was the South Korean again who led by two points at the break.

An Seyoung's court coverage was exquisite and her range of shorts continued to baffle the Indian star as the match progressed.

Trailing 14-9, Sindhu upped the ante and managed to bring down the deficit to just a single point with the help of some brilliant cross-court winners.

However, it wasn't quite enough to topple the in-form South Korean who wrapped up the match.

"It has been tough two years for all of us but we are very excited to host this tournament once again. Unfortunately, keeping players' and other stakeholders' safety as the topmost priority, this mega event will be played without spectators. BAI will ensure execution of this tournament under strict COVID protocols," BAI General Secretary Ajay Singhania said.

In the women's singles, top seed PV Sindhu will begin her march towards a first title of the new year against compatriot Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli and could face Russian fifth seed Evgeniya Kosetskaya in the Last-8 stage. Indian badminton fans would be hoping for the marquee all-Indian summit clash between Sindhu and the former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal, who has received a relatively tough draw.

The London Olympics bronze medallist and fourth seed Nehwal is likely to square off against seventh seed Iris Wang of the USA in the quarter-finals and second seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the semi-finals.

India Open 2022 draws announced: Srikanth likely to face Kean Yew, Lakshya and Sindhu get easier passage

Kidambi Srikanth produced the best performance by an Indian in the men's singles event in the history of the BWF World Championships as he became the first male shuttler from the country to bag a silver medal at the showpiece event. Srikanth went down fighting against Singapore's Loh Kean Yew in a hard-fought final but did enough to etch his name in history.

Srikanth dropped just one game in the run-up to the semi-final where he met his Indian compatriot Lakshya Sen, who gave the seasoned campaigner a run for his money. Lakshya got off to a brilliant start against Srikanth, clinching the first game before the 28-year-old staged an amazing comeback to win the next two games and secure his spot in the final.

Srikanth lost against Loh Kean in the final but bettered the feats of the legendary Prakash Padukone and B Sai Praneeth, who won a bronze medal each at the 1983 and the 2019 World Championships respectively. Srikanth joined PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in an elite list of Indian shuttlers to have won a silver medal at the World Championships.

In an exclusive interaction with WION after his historic triumph, Srikanth revealed he had no idea about being the first man from India to reach the final of the BWF World Championships and was more contented with his consistency throughout the tournament.

"Frankly, I didn't know about me being the first Indian player to make it to World Championships final in men's singles. One of the reporters told me about it after I won the semi-final. But I was happier about being consistent throughout the tournament," Srikanth told WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo in an exclusive interaction.

Srikanth had his moments in the final against unseeded Loh Kean but was defeated by the Singapore shutter's pace and agility towards the end. Srikanth came close to winning the second game when the duo was tied at 18-18 but Loh Kean managed to take the game 22-20 to win his maiden World Championships title.

Srikanth said it was a close match and could have ended up in anyone's favour had he managed to take a point or two extra after he reached 18 points in the second game.

"It was a very good match, a close one, one-two points in the second set after 18 would have made a huge difference. If I had won the second set, nobody knows what would have happened. I think I played really well but it was about one-two points at the end," said the ace Indian shuttler, who won his last big title in 2017.

"I want to push myself harder and get the goal next time. I will talk to my coach, trainer and physio ahead of India Open and I will work on what they say and will keep working on what they want me to work on," he added.

Srikanth, who won four Superseries titles in 2017 had enjoyed a stellar run that year before a knee injury hampered his progress. He missed out on a berth for the Tokyo Olympics this year due to fitness issues and lack of form. Srikanth had played his last final at the India Open in 2019.

Nonetheless, the ace shuttler said he never doubt himself and his ability to fight back. The World Championships silver medallist said it was gradual progress to reach the final at the World Championships this year.

"There was never self-doubt, I never doubted myself. I always knew I can come back, I just wanted some time before I can get into that rhythm. The World Championships was not my first tournament after 6 months where I went and performed, it was my 9th or 10th tournament (since the lockdown). I slowly started to perform, reached a few semis and quarters and then played this final. It was slow progress but I am happy it happened at the right time," Srikanth said.

He also lauded 20-year-old Lakshya Sen, who has been touted by many as the future of Indian badminton and impressed with his performances at the World Championships.

"He is been playing really well in the last few months. He is very young, passionate. It's good to see young players doing well, it's always a good sign, I am sure there are many players who would want to do well in the big tournaments, I would include myself in that list as well," said Srikanth.

Exclusive! Never doubted myself, always knew I can come back: Kidambi Srikanth on historic silver

Lakshya Sen, who won a bronze medal at his first World Championships, has pledged to try for gold next time, even as the young shuttler focuses on the All England Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

On Saturday, the 20-year-old from Almora finished with a bronze medal after losing an incredibly close semifinal 17-21 21-14 21-17 against seasoned compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.

"It has been a long tournament and it is difficult to take such a loss when you are so close. I, at least, got a bronze, but I am not happy. I'm not very satisfied with the performance in the semifinals," Sen told PTI.

"I played a lot of good matches, faced some tough opponents, even in the semifinal it was a close match, it could have gone in anybody's favour. The medal is something to look forward to... Next time I will go for the gold."

"It is a good thing that in my first world championship, I made it to the semifinals and joined Prakash sir but I am looking forward to winning many more medals and events like him. Especially, I want to win the All England Championships, like him."

"The bronze medal is a big confidence booster for me, it is a stepping stone for future tournaments."

Further talking about the semi-final, Sen said, "It was a close match overall. In the last game, I made few mistakes in the end and he managed to pull out some quick points, which gave him the advantage. I could have done some things better but it was his day."

Sen had some tough matchups this week leading up to the semifinals, with two of the three matches lasting three games or more, including a gruelling quarterfinal against China's Zhao Jun Peng.

"It is hard to recover when you play three setters. The semifinal was also a physical battle. He had an easy quarterfinal compared to me, but it is a game where you have to give your best."

Sen played with a strapped shoulder and a bandaged knee, and he stated he's looking forward to getting all of his niggles worked out during the break.

"I had hurt my knee at Hylo Open when I had dived, there was pain but I managed it well. The shoulder was strapped as a safety measure as we have to play a lot of smashes during the rallies and, in slow conditions, it can be difficult. So I will fix all the niggles during the break."

Tendulkar, Rijiju lead wishes as Kidambi Srikanth & Lakshya Sen make India proud at BWF World C'ships

Kidambi Srikanth scripted history on Saturday (December) 18 as he became the first Indian male shuttler to enter the final of the BWF World Championships after defeating Indian compatriot Lakshya Sen in a hard-fought semi-final. Srikanth got the better of 20-year-old Sen 17-21, 21-14, 21-17 in a thrilling encounter to book his place in the summit clash.

Srikanth had set up an all-Indian semi-final clash with Lakshya after a comfortable victory over Dutch ace Mark Caljouw. The ace Indian shuttler had dropped just one game in the run-up to the semi-final but went down in the first game against Lakshya, who displayed remarkable grittiness and resilience against the former world no.1.

It was an even start to the first game between the two Indians before Lakshya grabbed a three-point lead to make it 11-8 in his favour. Srikanth closed in on 10-11 but Lakshya forced some errors to maintain his three-point lead making it 13-16 before eventually clinching the first game 21-17.

Lakshya started the second game on a bright note once again and raced to a 5-3 lead before Srikanth fought back. The senior Indian shuttler produced some remarkable smashes and controlled the net in a brilliant fashion to close in on Lakshya and make it 8-9. He took seven out of eight points to take a slender lead and make it 11-9 in his favour.

Once in control, Srikanth didn't let Lakshya make a comeback in the second game and ended up clinching it 21-14 to force the semi-final into a decider. It was a nail-biting third game as the two shuttlers gave their all before Srikanth's patience, experience and ability to stay calm under pressure paid off as he won the game 21-17 to enter the final.
