Emotional homecoming: Kashmiri Pandits gather at historic Habba Kadal Ashram

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has launched a major initiative to identify and demarcate lands and properties belonging to displaced Kashmiri Pandits across all ten districts of the Kashmir Valley. The move follows the recommendations of a committee constituted last year to address long-standing property-related grievances of migrant families. As part of the initiative, the Divisional Administration has directed all Deputy Commissioners to organise “Outreach Camps” to enable on-the-spot verification and resolution of cases involving illegal encroachments, distress sales, boundary disputes, and mutation-related issues. The camps are intended to streamline the process of addressing grievances and facilitate the restoration of property possession to the rightful owners. According to an official government order, the camps will begin on April 1, 2026.“In pursuance of the decisions taken in the meeting of the Oversight Steering Committee constituted to monitor the progress of cases related to encroachment upon the properties owned by Kashmiri migrants,” the order stated, adding that the initiative is intended to ensure time-bound disposal of grievances concerning migrant properties. The order further states that the camps will be conducted by designated Nodal Officers, Additional Deputy Commissioners appointed under Government Order No. 741-JK (GAD) of 2025, dated June 19, 2025.The first camp is scheduled to be held in Srinagar on April 1–2 and will focus on issues such as mutation, demarcation, encroachments, possession, correction of revenue records, and other grievances related to immovable properties belonging to Kashmiri migrants.Subsequent camps will be organised across the Valley according to the following schedule: Budgam – April 6–7, Ganderbal – April 8–9, Bandipora – April 10–11, Baramulla – April 15–16, Kupwara – April 17–18, Pulwama – April 20–21, Shopian – April 22–23, Anantnag – April 24–25 and Kulgam – April 27–28.Meanwhile, the All India Kashmiri Samaj (AIKS), a representative organisation of Kashmiri Pandits with affiliates across India and abroad, welcomed the government’s decision to organise outreach camps aimed at addressing property-related grievances of migrant families. However, the organisation has also urged the government to release a detailed report on properties that have allegedly been encroached upon or illegally transferred in revenue records.“Government should conduct a local survey regarding those migrants’ ancestral properties left behind, for which they do not possess any records with them. These properties are the inherited ones through a lineage,” said Ravinder Pandita, president of AIKS.Pandita also called for similar outreach camps to be organised in the Delhi NCR region, where he said nearly 30 per cent of displaced Kashmiri Hindus have been living since their migration.

Kashmiri Pandits demand a bill like Waqf for preserving temple and associated properties in Jammu and Kashmir

While speaking at a public rally in Jammu on Wednesday (September 25), Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, made a serious gaffe when he mistakenly called Kashmiri Pandits as "refugees from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK)."

Gandhi, in his speech, said that former prime minister Manmohan Singh had made a promise to PoK refugees, but soon realised his error. He corrected himself by saying “sorry” and changed his statement to the “promise made to Kashmiri Pandits”.

“Those refugees who came from PoK, the promises made to them by Manmohan Singh ji will be fulfilled… Sorry… Kashmiri Pandits…promises made to Kashmiri Pandits will be fulfilled,” Gandhi said at the public gathering.

He then accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of snatching the statehood from Jammu and Kashmir. “Till the lieutenant governor is here, outsiders will continue to get benefits at the expense of the people of J&K,” he said.

He said that downgrading Jammu and Kashmir to Union territory "was grave injustice with the people".

"We thought that the statehood would be restored before elections, and it was the right way, but they went for polls first. If the BJP did not do it for any reason, then the first job under the INDIA government will be to give statehood because this is your right," Gandhi promised in his speech.

India: Rahul Gandhi confuses ‘Kashmiri Pandits’ with ‘PoK refugees’, BJP takes ‘Pappu’ dig at him

A fire that erupted from an abandoned Pandit house, engulfing five ancient homes of the Kashmiri Pandit community in the Lone Mohalla of Mattan in South Kashmir's Anantnag around 1 am on Sunday midnight.

India: Kashmiri Pandits houses set on fire, investigations on for the cause of fire

Five Houses belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit Community in South Kashmir's Anantnag district were completely gutted in a fire incident. The fire broke during the night hours in the Mattan area of Anantnag, destroying the old houses of the Kashmiri Pandit community. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and started investigating the cause of the fire.

The members of the Kashmiri Pandit community living outside Kashmir allege that the fire was caused to threaten the Kashmiri Pandit Community and dissuade them from coming back to the Valley.

The National Conference Party leaders said that they stand united with Kashmiri Pandit brethren in Mattan, Anantnag, following the tragic fire that destroyed several houses. They also said that one of the affected houses holds deep sentimental value as it was the maternal home of our Additional Spokesperson, Umesh Talashi. They further added that this loss of property is deeply emotional and significant, and they call on the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.

''The recent fire incident of Kashmiri Migrant Properties in Mattan area of Kashmir, raises an eyebrow. The Deputy commissioner of the district is the custodian of the minority properties and is not taking the proper steps to preserve the minority properties and four houses have been gutted of Kashmiri Pandit Migrants. We request the government to take steps for the protection of these sites. No one was living there so there was no possibility of short circuit or gas cylinder blast, etc. It is a clear case of sabotage, and we need to take preventive measures. The administration should gear up so that the exiled community does not see such acts again and these owners should be compensated. And we hope all properties should be protected,'' said Ravindra Pandita, President, Kashmir Shardapeeth Asthapan.

Multiple Kashmiri Pandit community members warned the government that terrorism is still not finished in the Kashmir Valley, but added that these incidents will also not intimidate them. They said that they would continue to live in their homeland alongside the Muslim brothers.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have started an investigation into the case. The FSL teams have taken the samples, and an FIR has been registered under section 326. The police have also taken CCTV footage of the area for investigation.

''A fire incident at a Kashmiri Pandit's house in Mattan Area of Anantnag, which belongs to Shri Anand Ji Razdan, was reported. The moment we received the report, the SHO Mattan along with the Police Party reached the spot and the fire brigade was brought in. In around one and half hours, the fire was doused. The adjacent houses were also damaged due to the fire. Police brought the FSL teams and also took the CCTV footage of the area. A case has been registered under section 326. The investigation has started and I want to assure that we have started a robust investigation, and a senior officer is conducting it,'' said Javed Iqbal, DIG South Kashmir Range.

Not only the Pandit community organisations but also the political leadership of Jammu and Kashmir called for a thorough investigation into the fire incident.

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (Dec 6) targeted Congress without naming the party whilst defending the two bills his party has brought in the parliament. Shah was speaking during a debate on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill where he said the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits could have been avoided, had terrorism been tackled without considering vote-bank politics.

While the first bill modified the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004 by eliminating the original definition of weak and under-privileged classes, the other bill proposes to increase the total number of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly from 83 to 90, of which seven would be reserved for scheduled caste members and nine seats for legislators from scheduled tribes.

Defending the two bills, Shah said once the legislation is passed in both houses, it will provide representation to those who had to leave Kashmir because of terrorism.

"When they (Kashmiri Pandits) were displaced, they were forced to live as refugees in their country. Around 46,631 families were displaced in their own country. This Bill is to get them rights, this Bill is to give them representation," said Shah in Lok Sabha (Lower House).

"Had terrorism been tackled at the beginning without considering vote-bank politics, Kashmiri Pandits wouldn't have had to leave the valley," he added.

The Kashmiri Pandits, the natives of the state were forced out in an exodus due to the rise in Islamic terrorism in the late 80s.

"There was an era of terrorism (in Jammu and Kashmir) after the 1980s and it was a horrifying scene. Those who lived on the land considering it their country, were thrown out and no one cared about them, neither did they try to stop it. In fact, those who were responsible for stopping it, were enjoying vacations in England," said Shah, referring to the then-ruling Congress party at centre.

A meeting, to mark the exodus and genocide of the Kashmiri pandits took place on the campus of the United Kingdom parliament earlier this week. The meeting took place with the support of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Hindus-part of which are British MPs, members of the Kashmiri Pandit Diaspora in the UK.

The UK MPs who participated in the meet were, MPs- Bob Blackman, Jonathan Lord, Theresa Villiers, Virender Sharma, Lord Waverley. The Indian high commission was represented by Sarvjeet Soodan, first secretary, Political, press and Information.

MP Bob Blackman said, "The right to return to the valley..is an absolute right (of Kashmiri Pandits). We have an illegal occupation by Pakistan of sovereign India that continues". He lauded the removal of special status for the erstwhile state, pointing, "it was imposed on a temporary basis."

Bob Blackman is also the Chair All Party Parliamentary, APPG group for British Hindus. The group may include individuals and organizations from outside Parliament in their administration and activities. In the past as well, such meetings have been happening.

The MP also made a comment on a recent documentary by the BBC on PM Modi and terming it "absolutely disgraceful propaganda". During the event, first-person accounts and second-generation stories of Kashmiri Hindus living in Britain were narrated.

The event was moderated by Sonal Sher on behalf of the Secretariat for the APPG. Speaking to WION, Sonal said, "It is important that our voice is heard at the highest levels in the UK and around the world, which is why this was held at the UK House of Commons. Kashmiri Hindus want an acknowledgement of genocide from the GOI, followed by a viable roadmap of how our people can safely be repatriated (on our terms)".

She explained, "We commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, and it is only right that our story is not forgotten or erased. The world narrative on Kashmir has been seized by Pakistan when it has nothing to do with Kashmir. As the indigenous inhabitants of the valley, we want to ensure that our voices and our concerns are centered. Justice may be delayed but it will not be denied to us."

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah has hit out at the filmmakers of Kashmir Files and told lies have been projected in the movie. It wasn't the NC government in 1990 but a governor’s rule under VP Singh’s regime.

Omar was addressing a rally today in South Kashmir's Kulgam district, where he spoke about the film. He also asked the director whether it was a documentary or a Bollywood film.

''Many lies are projected in The Kashmir Files movie. It wasn't the NC government in 1990 but a governor’s rule under VP Singh’s regime and the Governor was Jagmohan. BJP was ruling at the centre,'' said Omar Abdullah.

''Why haven't you shown that in the movie. You have shown Farooq Abdullah and not the reality. If Kashmiri pandits have died, we all are sad about it. But Muslims have died too. There are Muslims also who left and didn't return. Sikhs also left. We need to create an atmosphere to bring them back,'' he added.

Omar also said that the National Conference has always worked for the return of Kashmiri Pandits safely to the valley. But if movies like these are made, the makers want to make sure that these people should not return.

“But Kashmir Files movie film makers don't seem to be wanting the return of Kashmiri Pandits,” said Abdullah.

'Shikara' second trailer releases, brings back the untold story of Kashmiri Pandits

Recently trailer of a movie based on Kashmiri Pandits exodus, 'Shikara', was released. The film depicts exodus of Kashmiri Pandits and highlights their plight. The movie has brought back painful memories of the forceful displacement and 'genocide' of Kashmiri Pandits.

30 years ago, over 3.5 lakh Kashmiri Pandits were forced out of the Valley following threats by militants, asking them to convert to Islam or die.

More than 350 pandits were killed and several women were raped. Their homes were destroyed or grabbed.

Kashmiri Pandits, who say they are refugees in their own country, have been demanding the successive governments that they are rehabilitated and their dignity is restored.

The plight of Kashmiri Pandits has often been overshadowed by the overall Kashmir conflict. The only help they got was from late Bala Saheb Thackeray who stood behind them when they were forced out of the valley.

Kashmiri Pandits have experienced unimaginable devastation and literally survived on their own for the 3 decades without much help from the successive governments.

After the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, they are expressing hope for a dignified return to the valley.

Not just economic and safety measures, but the government must also introduce peacebuilding measures between all communities in the valley. After the abrogation of Article 370, the government now should look into creating jobs, reviving the tourism industry and the apple trade. Prosperity is important for not just to rehabilitate the Pandit community, but also for Kashmiri Muslims.

Political parties, public intellectuals, who are vocal about the minority rights in India, should also extend all the support to Pandits to facilitate their rehabilitation and make them feel acknowledged. It's time to break the silence and shed a tear for Pandits too.

They are often told to move on, however, what they need is safe and dignified resettlement in the valley and acknowledgement of their forced displacement.

U.S: Kashmiri Pandits protest outside Washing Post HQ, against post's biased media coverage

Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits, said Governor Satya Pal Malik after hoisting the national flag at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar to mark the occasion of India`s 73rd Independence Day.

"Jammu and Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits. The administration is committed towards their homecoming and rehabilitation in Kashmir. This is possible with the support and cooperation of all stakeholders including Valley people who share a social and cultural bond with the Kashmiri migrants," Malik said.

Congratulating Kashmiri people for cooperating with the administration during the Amarnath Yatra and concluding it in a peaceful manner, he said: "Over 3 lakh pilgrims paid a visit to the Holy cave. Hajj and Amarnath were organised in a manner which is an excellent example of the true essence of Kashmiriyat which is exemplary for its communal harmony."

The Governor asserted that 3,000 vacancies out of 6,000 in the public sector were established for Kashmiri migrant Pandits and these vacancies are soon to be filled. "The process for recruitment against the remaining 3000 posts out of 6000 created for Kashmiri migrants and the construction of transit accommodation for the employees serving in the Valley has been expedited," he said.

Malik informed that the foundation stone for new Kushak Bakula Rimpoche Airport terminal building at Leh has been laid and the process is underway to establish a full-fledged commercial airport at Kargil.

The process to establish the second tier of the Panchayats has been initiated for which the elections to the block development councils shall be held very soon, he said."I request all elected Panches and Sarpanches to come forward and participate in these elections.

Both Block Development Councils and District Development Boards play a key role in ensuring the participation of people and development in their respective areas," he added. Recalling government`s "Back to Village" programme to address the problems of locals in the remote areas, he said: "Over 4,500 Gazetted Officers of the state visited the Panchayats and stayed there for two days. They interacted with the people to resolve their grievances.

Speaking about Ladakh, he said Ladakh`s people demand has been fulfilled with the formation of a Union Territory of Ladakh."The formation of Ladakh as a new territory will enable the people of Ladakh to realise their aspirations despite the difficult terrain. My administration had created a separate Revenue and Administrative Division for 'Ladakh' comprising the districts of Leh and Kargil with a divisional commissioner and an inspector general of police. Around 495 posts were also sanctioned for staffing the various departments of this division," Malik said.

He said that a separate University has been established for Ladakh region for which a vice-chancellor has been appointed and now students do not have to move outside Ladakh for higher studies.
