At a time when apple growers are harvesting their produce across various districts in the Kashmir region, all fruit mandis in the division observed a two-day strike today to protest the prolonged closure of the National Highway. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway has been shut for over two weeks, and even after traffic was allowed to resume, vehicles are crawling along due to heavy congestion. The National Highway closure has caused around 400 crore losses to the Horticulture Industry. The months of September and October are critical for the horticulture industry in the Kashmir Valley, marking the peak season for harvesting and distributing produce across India. Kashmir accounts for approximately 78 per cent of India's apple production, making it one of the country's leading producers of this fruit. The apple industry contributes roughly 15 per cent to the region's GDP, yielding around 2.5 million metric tonnes of apples annually. This output represents about 78 per cent of India's total annual apple production, generating an estimated economic value of 15,000 to 20,000 crore.''It's been around 20 days since the National Highway was closed, which has led to losses of crores of rupees. We are doing this protest only for one demand of opening the national highway as soon as possible. The second is that the present government is sleeping here, we had voted and chosen a government, but they are watching as silent spectators. It's very unfortunate that our district has six MLA's and they have not uttered a word. They only think about themselves and nothing else. The motive of this protest is to wake up the sleeping government of Jammu and Kashmir, '' said Mohammad Amin Wani, President, Handwara Fruit Association. Some of the Fruit growers are requesting the government to hand over the National Highway to the Indian Army. They allege that not one MLA from the Kashmir division has spoken about the closure of the National Highway and losses incurred by the fruit growers.''We have decided to close down the fruit Mandi's for two days due to the closure of the National Highway. If the government does not restore the National Highway within two days, we will come on the roads, our families will come out too. This is our only way of survival, the tourism industry has already finished after the Pahalgam attack, and now only horticulture was saved but that is also breathing its last. We request the LG and central government to restore the road. We have so many MLAS here and not one of them has spoken. The National Highway should be handed over to the Indian Army and I am sure they will restore it within a day, '' said Fayaz Ahmad Malik, Sopore Mandi.Meanwhile, the LG of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, flagged off a Parcel Train with eight coaches from Budgam to New Delhi. This initiative addresses long-standing demands from apple growers, who have faced challenges due to the national highway connecting Srinagar to the rest of India being closed for weeks at the time of the harvest. The two parcel trains from Budgam will transport fresh apple produce from various districts to multiple states across India, boosting the region’s agricultural economy.Launched during the peak apple harvest season, this service aims to address persistent logistical challenges caused by frequent disruptions on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44), including landslides and closures due to adverse weather conditions. These disruptions have annually resulted in spoilage, delayed deliveries, and financial losses amounting to hundreds of crores for farmers transporting perishable goods by road.''I believe this train will contribute a lot to the economic upliftment. We know due to heavy rainfall, the national highway gets closed sometimes and it used to cause losses to the fruit growers. I think in the coming days there will be a big change in Kashmir because of Indian railways. The railways have started a very good service and I want to thank them for it, at least the goods of farmers from Kashmir will reach the markets in the rest of the country, '' said LG Manoj Sinha. The parcel train will operate daily from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar railway station in New Delhi as a scheduled service, departing Budgam at 6:00 AM with stops at Bari Brahmana and Jammu, reaching Adarsh Nagar in approximately 23 hours. Comprising eight parcel vans dedicated to fruit transport, each train will initially carry 180–200 metric tons of apples daily. Transportation costs are expected to be roughly half that of road haulage.

The web portal, developed by the Home Department in collaboration with NIC, will serve as a centralised platform to capture and maintain comprehensive district-wise data on terrorism-affected families. The details of any encroachments on the property of the victims or their NOKs are also being captured. “The initiative will streamline and expedite the process of providing relief, compassionate appointments, and other forms of assistance to those who have suffered from terrorism in the UT,” the Lieutenant Governor said. ''It will ensure that no legitimate case is left unaddressed and timely support is extended to eligible families in terms of financial relief, ex-gratia compensation and compassionate employment while ensuring elimination of any bogus or multiple claims, '' he added. The Lieutenant Governor is personally monitoring and overseeing the redressal of all cases across the UT of J&K. Toll-free helpline numbers have also been established at the offices of the Divisional Commissioners in both Jammu (0191-2478995) and Kashmir (0194-2487777) divisions, to facilitate the registration of any overlooked or pending claims. These helplines are being attended through dedicated control rooms as citizen interfaces for receiving grievances or queries related to pending government support to terror-affected families viz., compensation, ex gratia relief and Compassionate appointments. The helplines have been staffed with trained personnel and will be integrated with the centralised application to ensure that every claim is formally recorded and acted upon. In order to ensure regular oversight, coordination, and follow-up on the grievances and pending claims, Special Monitoring Cells have been constituted in the offices of Chief Secretary and Director General of Police. These special cells will periodically review the status of pending and resolved cases, analyse delays or bottlenecks in processing, and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely and just resolution of claims.

Srinagar: The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, launched a coffee table book, “Valleys of Jammu and Kashmir” in Srinagar on Monday. The book documents the unseen and raw beauty of Kashmir Valley’s treks in the upper reaches. While speaking at the event, CM Omar Abdullah said, “While some people climb on the mountains, some just climb the walls.” Omar made the remark after he had jumped the fence earlier in the day and broken multiple barricades to reach the Martyr’s graveyard in Srinagar’s Nowhatta area. Omar also said that what is very unfortunate is that a book about trekking is being released at a time when most of these routes and treks are closed. “What is unfortunate is that this book is being released at a time when not even a single trekking route is open. In the last two or three months, a lot of Kashmir tourist places have been closed, and looking at this book is making me very sad. We are hopeful that these routes will open soon. Although this decision is not in our hands. If not for the tourists, they can open them for the locals. The movement of locals over these places will build confidence in the people,” the CM said. The coffee table book “Valleys of Jammu and Kashmir” has been written by senior bureaucrat and trekking enthusiast Mehmood Ahmad Shah. He serves the Jammu and Kashmir Government as the Managing Director of KPDCL. According to Shah, the book took over 20 years to be finally published. The book has over 114 photographs taken over the last two decades and detailed documentation of 54 high altitude lakes. Speaking at the event, Shah also thanked Garry Weare, a prominent Australian author and Himalayan expert for writing the foreword of the book. Shah said he had been constantly taking advice from Garry before the publishing of the book. The book will be helpful to the trekkers and will guide them to take up adventurous journeys and routes in the higher reaches of the valley which have hardly been explored. The book gives exact coordinates of the places and lakes on the higher reaches making it very easy for the trekkers to take these journeys.

The first batch of Amarnath Yatris that left from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar early morning today has reached both the base camps in Anantnag’s Pahalgam area and Ganderbal’s Baltal area. Notably, around 5892 Yatris reached Kashmir. The official data suggested that out of 5892 total pilgrims, 3403 pilgrims decided to take the traditional Pahalgam route while 2489 decided to take the Baltal axis. All the Yatris were brought along with a convoy which consisted of 310 vehicles, including 124 buses,42 medium motor vehicles, and 144 light motor vehicles. The first batch of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims was welcomed in the Kashmir Valley with floral garlands. Upon arriving in the Kashmir Valley, the pilgrims were received with a rousing welcome from locals and the administration in districts such as Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, and Bandipora. Local Muslims, alongside police, civil society members, trade fraternities, fruit growers, and market associations, greeted the yatris with garlands and cheers, reflecting Kashmir’s tradition of communal harmony and hospitality. The numbers clearly indicate that faith has overpowered the terror. Some of the Yatris said that bullets and bombs can’t break our faith. The pilgrims this year after the Pahalgam attack have chosen the Pahalgam route instead of the Baltal.Authorities had earlier said that after the Pahalgam attack, there was a drop of 10 percent in the registrations. However, the confidence among the pilgrims has increased and there is a gradual increase due to the robust security measures.Jammu and Kashmir Police along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will be guarding the Amarnath Yatra routes this year.Around 42,000 security personnel are deployed in Pahalgam alone, while an additional 50,000 CRPF jawans will protect the convoy of pilgrims on both sides from Jammu to the holy cave along the national highway. The Amarnath Yatra has been upgraded with all the hi-tech gadgetry and AI-based facial recognition systems this year. For the first time ever, the data of active terrorist and OGWs and other blacklisted peoples have been fed in the system. The moment anyone from the system walks in front of these FRS Cameras, it will start beeping. Meanwhile, every pilgrim will be given RFID tags for real-time pilgrim tracking which is mandatory for their movement. Moreover, high-resolution CCTV cameras and drones are placed for continuous surveillance with control rooms at base camps. Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) and bomb disposal squads are stationed at every strategic point.

Global carriers Air France, Germany's Lufthansa and other airlines have cautiously decided to avoid the Pakistan airspace. This decision comes amid rising tensions between nuclear-armed nations India and Pakistan.
Islamabad has been exhibiting its military prowess, while India has ordered mock drills to be conducted across 244 districts in the country. This comes after the country witnessed a dastardly attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
Lufthansa released a statement alerting flyers about a possible delay due to a change in the route. The airline mentioned that their aircraft will be avoiding Pakistani airspace, and so the journey could take longer to reach destinations in Asia. The statement read: "Due to the current situation, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group are avoiding Pakistani airspace until further notice. This will result in longer flight times on some routes to Asia."
It added, "We regret any inconvenience caused by the resulting delays. We kindly ask all passengers to check their flight status in the app or on the website before departure. Lufthansa Group is, of course, continuing to monitor the current developments closely. Safety is the top priority for all airlines in the Lufthansa Group at all times."

Pahalgam terror attack

On April 22, tourists were enjoying the scenic beauty of the Baisaran meadow, a location popular among travellers. While spending time with their loved ones, the tourists suddenly heard rounds of gunshots and the armed men held many at gunpoint and shot at close range.
The attack is said to have been orchestrated and planned by The Resistance Front, which is an offshoot of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Soon after claiming responsibility, the terror outfit shifted gears and in a U-turn move, hinted that their social media account was hacked. Also distancing themselves from the statement they released.
Condemning the incident, former J&K DGP Shesh Paul Vaid said, "This is Pulwama 2 moment of India. This was a Hamas-style attack on 7 October on Israel."
On Thursday (Apr 24), PM Modi said, "Today, from the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and those backing them. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism."

"I appeal to the Governor sahib, please do not be cruel to us. We have not committed any sin. Please let us live here. If not, then kill us and send our bodies across the border," she said while crying.
