A major archaeological discovery in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district is shedding new light on the region’s ancient past. Excavations at Jehanpora village have revealed a 2,000-year-old Buddhist site featuring stupas and monastic structures from the Kushan period. Sparked by rare photographs found in a French museum, the find underscores Kashmir’s historic role as a key Buddhist centre along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the discovery as a proud moment, calling it a window into Kashmir’s forgotten heritage.

Kashmir’s Lost Buddhist Chapter: 2,000-Year-Old Site Unearthed in J&K

A village in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir is home to several mounds that have remained a mystery for years. Archaeologists from Srinagar and Delhi who studied these structures have now revealed that they are part of an ancient structure. These mounds are located along an ancient Silk Route that leads to Kandahar and even further, suggesting that they likely played some kind of role years ago. The researchers used drone surveys, aerial photography and mapping to learn what these mounds were. This mystery was solved thousands of kilometres away in a museum in France, where three old, blurred photographs held the secret of these mounds. These mounds are nothing but Buddhist stupas. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about them in his Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday. "Three Buddhist stupas were visible in that photograph of Baramulla. From there, the course of discovery changed, and Kashmir's forgotten past began to reveal itself," he said. The structures in the village of Zehanpora date back nearly 2,000 years and are not the only ones found. Archaeologists also discovered an urban settlement complex belonging to either chaityas or viharas, Kushan-era pottery shards, and copper artefacts and walls, with more expected. This cements the belief that Buddhist learning and monastic activities flourished in Kashmir. There have been references to Buddhism in the Valley in several texts, and now there is archaeological evidence to back it up.Also Read: Scientist finds earliest evidence that Rig Veda verses influenced civilisations outside India
Buddhism in Kashmir
The Buddhist era in Kashmir started when King Ashoka ruled, around 2,250 years ago. Kashmir Valley witnessed a massive blow to the tourism industry after the Pahalgam terror attack. The summer tourism saw one of its worst years, with a dip of over 90 per cent in the tourist footfall. And finally, after months, the tourism industry seems to be on the path to recovery, and a South Indian film crew has begun shooting, transforming the bloodstained site of tragedy into a canvas of light-hearted comedy. Vimal Krishna's untitled Telugu project is more than a professional milestone—it's a tentative vote of confidence in Kashmir's security and hospitality, with local tourism operators banking on the silver screen to woo back wary visitors. A 50-member Tollywood crew from Hyderabad, led by the director, arrived in July for reconnaissance and reported zero issues. Now 12 days into their Pahalgam schedule, the team is shooting an unapologetic comedy that flips Kashmir's cinematic legacy from brooding tragedy to effervescent farce. "I want to thank every Kashmiri for their warmth and support. We're the first crew to film here since the Pahalgam terror attack, and I can assure everyone: it's completely safe. The locals have made us feel at home, and I truly hope tourists will soon return to experience Kashmir's breathtaking beauty. I urge filmmakers everywhere to come and shoot in the Valley." said Vimal Krishna, Film Director. Before the Pahalgam terror attack, hundreds of film crews had flocked back to Kashmir, shooting movies, ads, and songs amid the Valley's stunning landscapes. The government had bolstered this revival with a new film policy, streamlining permissions and incentives to make shooting in Kashmir effortless for filmmakers. As Kashmir welcomes the season's first snowfall in iconic spots like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, tourism stakeholders in the Valley are brimming with optimism for a winter resurgence. Hoteliers report a surge in inquiries and are eagerly awaiting these leads to materialise into bookings, boosting tourist inflows this season.

What was billed as Kashmir’s biggest cricket carnival — the Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL T20) — has imploded into scandal. Players, hotel staff, and service providers allege unpaid dues, cancelled matches, and vanishing organisers, while Srinagar Police have filed an FIR and launched an investigation.
International cricketers who flew in for the event are now stranded, and questions are mounting about accountability in privately run sports leagues in the region. Government officials have condemned the incident, saying it has tarnished Kashmir’s reputation for hospitality and promised stern action against those responsible.
