In a recent study conducted by researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur, five Indian states - Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat - were identified as the major contributors to the country's dust emissions.

These states were reported to have high levels of dust particles in the air because of factors like road dust, construction sites and high traffic volume. The study emphasised the need for effective mitigation measures.

In the study conducted by researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur, it was indicated that five states made a contribution to 60 per cent of total dust emission in the country in terms of both particulate matter (PM) 10 and 2.5.

“Specific states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat emerged as the predominant contributors to road dust emissions. These states not only exhibit elevated silt loading (sL) values but also account for a substantial proportion of the total registered vehicles in India, thereby underscoring the pressing imperative for effective mitigation measures,” stated the study, further reflecting that these states also accounted for nearly 43 per cent of the total registered vehicles in India.

"While some had come for issues due to emissions from construction sites, others were living near the roads with high traffic volume and high concentration of dust particles in the air," said Dr Raval.
"The primary sign of dust-related irritation is non-obstructive chronic bronchitis where the patients get a bad dry cough which is not caused by any infection,” he added.

Hijab or no hijab in Karnataka educational institutes? CM Siddaramaiah clarifies his Mysuru speech

Chief Minister from the Indian state of Karnataka, K Siddaramaiah, announced on Friday (Dec 22) the withdrawal of the controversial hijab ban order in the state's educational institutions, a decision that has now intensified the ongoing feud between the Congress-led government and its predecessor, the BJP.

Speaking at an inauguration event, Siddaramaiah took a swipe at the BJP, criticising their slogan of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas' (Cooperation of all, Development of all). He accused the BJP of "sidelining" individuals who wore caps, burqas, and sported beards, questioning whether this was in line with their proclaimed commitment to inclusive development.

Addressing the crowd, Siddaramaiah said, "Your choices are yours, and my choices are mine. It's that simple." While responding to a query about hijab restrictions, he assured, "No restrictions.
Data spanning from 1995 to 2021 in India revealed a striking gender imbalance in organ transplants, with four men getting organ transplants for every woman. A total of 36,640 transplants took place in this period, out of which 29,000 were for men and 6,945 for women.

This substantial difference is attributed to a complex interplay of economic responsibilities, societal pressures, and deeply ingrained preferences.

Dr Anil Kumar, director of the government-run National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) highlighted this significant aspect of the organ donation landscape.

While more men contribute as cadaver donors, a staggering 93 per cent of total organ donations in the country come from living donors, he told the Times of India newspaper.

Socio-economic factors a driving force for women donors?

A study published in the Experimental and Clinical Transplantation Journal in 2021 delved into the intricacies of living organ transplantation in India.

The findings showed that 80 per cent of living organ donors are women, predominantly wives or mothers.

The socio-economic pressure on women to assume caregiving roles within the family emerges as a primary factor, compelling them to step forward as donors.

Men's reluctance in surgery

In many cases, men, often the primary breadwinners, hesitate to undergo surgery, contributing to the gender gap in organ recipients.

The study highlights that when the recipient is a male breadwinner, family members, especially wives or parents, feel a heightened responsibility to donate organs.

Emotional dynamics

The emotional dynamics surrounding organ donation are intricate. Women recipients, in particular, may experience guilt when their family members, especially wives or mothers, become donors.

This reluctance leads to a scenario where women recipients may find themselves on waiting lists.

Notably, Karnataka has topped the charts in organ donation in the past decade. The number of donations have risen from 102 in 2013 to 765 in the first 10 months of 2023.

Karnataka: Huge fire erupts at firecracker store in Bengaluru, claims lives of 12

Carpooling is quite common in metropolitan cities. India's Bengaluru, however, would no longer be able to avail this service. The Karnataka government announced that carpooling in Bengaluru is banned. But why?

Why did Bengaluru ban carpooling despite increasing traffic woos & pollution?

The southern Indian state of Karnataka has witnessed protests against the sharing of the Kaveri River water with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The dawn-to-dusk shutdown which evoked partial response was called by various former leaders and other organizations in the state. Schools and colleges were shut in Bengaluru the capital of Karnataka.

Cauvery Bengaluru Bandh: Protest against water release by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu

India's Supreme Court (SC), on Thursday (September 21), refused to intervene in the dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the release of Cauvery River water for irrigation purposes.

The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) in its September 12 order, which was upheld by CWMA, directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs (cubic foot per second) of water every day for the next 15 days to Tamil Nadu.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha and Prashant Kumar Mishra, while declining to meddle, said that both CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) are conducting meetings regularly and also observing the water requirements every 15 days.

The bench further highlighted that both CWMA and CWRC, have experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), who have weighed in on all the pertinent aspects like drought, deficit rainfall, and water level in the river and only then passed the order.

"We are therefore of the considered view that the factors which have been taken into consideration by both the authorities cannot be said to be irrelevant or extraneous. In that view, we are not inclined to interfere with the orders," the bench said.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for Tamil Nadu, submitted that both the authorities despite having acknowledged there was scanty rainfall since August and the state was eligible for 7,200 cusecs of water, reduced the volume to 5,000 cusecs a day.

"I am a low riparian state...water flows from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu from where it goes to Puducherry. There is a shortfall of rainfall which has been taken into consideration by the authorities. In a regular year, I would have been eligible for three times more but I am not seeking that. I am seeking what is rightfully mine," Rohatgi said.

He then added that Tamil Nadu has over five lakh acres of standing crop and on top of it is facing a drinking water issue for which more water is required in the Indian state.

"If the drought-like condition was taken into account and the authority calculated it to be 7,200 cusecs per day, then there was no occasion to further bring it down to 5,000 cusecs per day," he submitted.

On the other hand, senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for Karnataka, said that the state was also facing drought-like conditions, and the release of 5,000 cusecs of water ordered by the authorities is against the "interest".

"We are facing a drinking water crisis, especially in urban areas including in Bengaluru," he said.

"They have taken into account IMD data, rainfall, water level in reservoirs and other relevant data after which they have arrived at the figure of 5,000 cusecs," Bhati said.

Hoysala empire temples in India's Karnataka listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site

The High Court in Karnataka, on Friday (September 1), declared the elections of JD(S) Member of Parliament from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna as null and void.

In his judgment, Justice K Natarajan, partly allowed the two petitions filed by G Devarajegowda, a voter from the constituency, and A Manju, the then BJP’s defeated candidate (2019 LS polls) and also directed the Election Commission of India to take action against Prajwal Revanna for election malpractice as per the Conduct of Election Process Rules, as per news agency PTI report.

Revanna, who is the grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is the only candidate from the party to have won the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka in the year 2019.

Manju contested the Lok Sabha election against Revanna on a BJP ticket and lost. He then subsequently joined JD(S) and is presently an MLA.

The petitions had claimed that Revanna was involved in election malpractice and also did not declare his purchases to the Election Commission.

On Friday, Justice K Natarajan dictated the operative portion of his judgment in the court.

Karnataka High Court has invalidated the Lok Sabha membership of JDS MP Prajwal Revanna, saying that he had filed a false affidavit to the Election Commission in the 2019 general election. — ANI (@ANI) September 1, 2023 × “Both the election petitions filed by the petitioners are allowed in part. The election of the returned candidate, Respondent No 1 namely Prajwal Revanna alias Prajwal R, Member of the Parliament, Constituency 16, Hassan (General) having been declared as returned candidate dated 23.5.2019 is hereby declared as null and void,” Justice Natarajan said. Also read: I.N.D.I.A. alliance to contest 2024 elections together, slams ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan The high court however dismissed the prayer of the petitioners to declare Manju as the winning candidate as he himself was "involved in corrupt practices". "The prayer of the petitioners in both the cases to declare A Manju as returned candidate is rejected in view of the findings that he himself (is) involved in corrupt practices,” the HC said. The HC further also directed the Election Commission to take action against Prajwal’s father H D Revanna and brother Suraj Revanna for committing corrupt practices during time of elections. “H D Revanna and Suraj Revanna are named in the complaint under the Representation of People’s Act for having committed corrupt practice at the time of election and also A Manju, who is also involved in corrupt practice. Election Commission to issue notice and comply with Conduct of Election Process Rules,” the HC said. India: Opposition parties' 'informal meet' in Bengaluru ends without any major announcement

In what comes as a resounding win for the Make-in-India initiative, Tata Group may soon be assembling iPhone in the country. India's largest conglomerate is closing in on an agreement to acquire Apple's supplier's factory as soon as August, marking the first time a local company would move into the assembly of iPhones, according to a Bloomberg report.

Tata will be acquiring Taiwan-based Wistron Corp's factory in Karnataka. Currently, iPhone 14 is assembled at the factory which will be overseen by Tata, once the deal is finalised. The Karnataka facility is valued at more than $600 million and employs more than 10,000 workers.

"A takeover of the Wistron Corp. factory in southern Karnataka state, potentially valued at more than $600 million, would cap about a year of negotiations, said the people, asking not to be named as the matter is private," the publication reported.

Wistron has committed to shipping at least $1.8 million worth of iPhones from the factory in the fiscal year through March 2024 to earn the financial incentives. Moreover, it has put plans in motion to triple the plant's workforce by next year. Once Tata takes over, it will have to honour those commitments which the legacy brand has already agreed to.

Deal to reach fruition

There had been murmurs surrounding the deal for months. Earlier, it was reported that the two firms had discussed potential tie-ups, but talks settled with Tata Group taking on the complete duties. The Indian company is likely to oversee manufacturing operations while Wistron provides support during the transition period.

Notably, Apple, one of the world's most valuable companies, relies on Taiwanese manufacturing giants such as Wistron and Foxconn for manufacturing and assembly of its flagship iPhones.

Tata, an Indian success story

For decades, Tata has been the symbol of India's indigenous capabilities. From salt to tea to passenger airlines to tech services, Tata has found success in nearly every field it has dipped its toes in.

The company assembling the iPhone could significantly boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to challenge China's status as the factory of the world.

Apple has been looking at India as an alternative to China for a long time. The crackdown on the tech sector by Xi Jinping and the slowdown in growth after the pandemic in the mainland have only accelerated the process.

The news of the near closure of the deal comes a day after the Indian government suffered a setback in the form of Vedanta and Foxconn parting ways. The two companies had signed a deal to set up a mega semiconductor manufacturing facility in the country but could not work out the finer details of the deal, eventually calling it quits.

Also read | Apple, moving away from China, makes iPhones worth $7bn in India Deal to reach fruition There had been murmurs surrounding the deal for months. Tata, an Indian success story For decades, Tata has been the symbol of India's indigenous capabilities. From salt to tea to passenger airlines to tech services, Tata has found success in nearly every field it has dipped its toes in. The company assembling the iPhone could significantly boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to challenge China's status as the factory of the world. ALSO WATCH | Apple's iPhone exports from India surpass $2.5 billion × Apple has been looking at India as an alternative to China for a long time.
Sexual assault on a dead body will not be termed as "rape", the High Court of the Indian state of Karnataka has observed. The court referred to Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while saying that a dead body cannot be called a human or person. With this, the court also acquitted a man of rape charges who is accused of murdering a 21-year-old girl and then sexually assaulting her dead body.

The bench was quoted by Live Law as saying, “A careful reading of the provisions of Sections 375 and 377 of the Indian Penal Code makes it clear that the dead body cannot be called as human or person.
The court also stated that necrophilia is a "psychosexual disorder" which DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) classifies among a group of disorders called 'paraphilias' including paedophilia, exhibitionism and sexual masochism.

You must've heard the song 'Young, Dumb & Broke'. Let us introduce you to its remix version ' Old, Criminal & Rich'. A recent report has revealed that a staggering 75 per cent of the ministers in the newly appointed cabinet in India's southern state of Karnataka have unresolved criminal cases pending against them and that a whopping 97 per cent of them are as rich as Richie Rich. The news comes after the Indian National Congress won the election in a landslide earlier this month.

In its analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of 32 of the 34 ministers including the chief minister, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 24 of the ministers have pending criminal cases against them out of which 22 per cent, or seven, have serious criminal cases.

The charges these ministers face, among various others, include offences such as participating in riots, wielding dangerous weapons, engaging in criminal intimidation, tampering with or destroying documents or electronic records to obstruct their use as evidence, and endangering the lives or safety of others.

Millionaires all around

A thorough examination of the minister's self-declared assets and liabilities revealed that an overwhelming majority (97 per cent) of them are millionaires. The average assets of the 32 ministers analysed are 1.19 billion rupees or USD 14.4 million.

The deputy chief minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, holds the highest declared assets, valued at INR 14.13 billion or around USD 171 million.

In comparison, on the other end of the spectrum, with the lowest declared assets is Timmapur Ramappa Balappa from the Mudhol (SC) constituency who by his own declaration possesses assets amounting to INR 5.8 million or around USD 70,880.

Educational qualifications

The report also went through the millionaire ministers' educational qualifications. Six ministers, or about 19 per cent of the newly appointed cabinet, don't even have an undergraduate degree and have stated their educational qualification as being between 8th and 12th grade.

24 ministers, or 75 per cent, said they possess a graduate degree or higher. Additionally, two ministers declared that they are diploma holders.

An inclusive cabinet?

Interestingly, the new cabinet consists of only one woman, Laxmi R. Hebbalkar from the Belgaum constituency. She has declared assets worth over INR 130 million or USD 1.57 million and liabilities exceeding INR 50 million or USD 70,000, according to the ADR report.

Unsurprisingly, if we talk of age distribution, almost half (44 per cent) or 14 ministers of the Karnataka cabinet are aged between 61 and 80. The remaining 18 ministers, or 56 per cent, fall between the ages of 41 and 60.

In India, where about 65 per cent of the population is young, aged 35 or less, the mean age of Lok Sabha MPs for the last 20 years as per India Today's Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) has remained above 50.

Millionaires all around A thorough examination of the minister's self-declared assets and liabilities revealed that an overwhelming majority (97 per cent) of them are millionaires.
