Bengaluru, India's tech hub and innovation capital will get a new government when the congress party swears in its new chief minister for Karnataka. The South Indian city is important for the Indian economy but the city has its share of challenges.

India's Silicon Valley: New government, old challenges

<p>The Congress Legislature Party (CLP), which met at a private hotel in Bengaluru on Sunday evening, passed a unanimous resolution authorising All India Congress Committee (AICC) President M Mallikarjun Kharge to pick its leader, who will be the next chief minister of Karnataka.</p>

<p>The CLP meeting was attended by AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and three central observers.<br />
Before the meeting, Venugopal and the central observers held a meeting with Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar - the two front-runners for the chief minister's post.</p>

<p>"The Congress Legislature Party unanimously resolves that the AICC President is hereby authorised to appoint the new Leader of the Congress Legislature Party," according to a one-line resolution passed at the CLP meeting. Siddaramaiah moved the resolution.<br />
With the ball now in Kharge's court, lobbying for the top post is set to shift to Delhi with both the contenders expected to arrive in the national capital on Monday to meet Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the AICC chief.</p>

<p>After the CLP meeting, Randeep Surjewala, AICC in-charge for Karnataka, said: "The MLAs will meet the central observers after dinner tonight and their decision will be conveyed to the party president for taking a decision to appoint a new CLP leader."<br />
Venugopal said, "This process of taking the opinion of all MLAs will be completed tonight itself." Sources said the observers will be handing over their report upon consulting all MLAs to Kharge by Monday.</p>

<p>In the May 10 elections to the 224-member Assembly, the Congress scored an emphatic victory with 135 seats, while the ruling BJP and the former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) secured 66 and 19, respectively.</p>

<p>"...Karnataka has once again shone a new light to democracy and protecting the Constitution, which are under attack from the forces of hate and divisiveness, both from inside and outside the State," the resolution stated.<br />
The Congress Legislature Party also expressed its appreciation and thanks to Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and state leaders for their efforts.</p>

<p>The resolution stated: "It is no coincidence that the Congress campaign in its true earnestness began way back in September-October 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, when Rahul Gandhi walked nearly 600 kilometres for a period of 21 days through the length and breadth of Karnataka, which immensely energised the cadre to take on the malgovernance, corruption and maladministration of the ruling BJP government."</p>

<p>"The Congress Legislature Party resolves to work determinedly and unitedly to give a responsible, accountable, transparent government to our brothers and sisters of Karnataka. Serving the 6.5 crore Kannadigas will be our sole motto and guiding light," the resolution read.</p>

<p>"We are duty bound to protect and preserve Kannada culture, language and our rich traditions. <p>The CLP appreciated the insurmountable hard work, resilience and dedication of Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah as also the entire team for leading the campaign from the front.</p>

<p>Both the eight-time MLA Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah have made no secret of their ambition to become Chief Minister and had been involved in a game of political one-upmanship in the past.</p>

<p>The Congress had entered the campaign phase with the challenge of keeping at bay the factionalism, especially between the camps of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who had been openly rooting for their leaders, but the party put up a united front and ensured that no rift came out in open that could derail its prospects, under the mentorship of Kharge.</p>

<p>Banners have come up in front of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar's residences here, erected by supporters, congratulating them for Congress' win and projecting them as the "next CM".</p>

<p>While the 60-year-old Shivakumar is considered to be a "troubleshooter" for the Congress, Siddaramaiah has a pan-Karnataka appeal.</p>

<p>If Siddaramaiah, who joined Congress after being expelled from JD(S), gets elected as the CLP leader, this would be his second stint as the Chief Minister from the party after having occupied the top post for five years between 2013-18. Shivakumar had served as Minister in Siddaramaiah's cabinet.</p>

<p>Shivakumar has been openly expressing his chief ministerial aspirations at various events, especially the ones connected with Vokkaligas. He had asked the dominant community, to which he belongs, not to "lose out an opportunity" with him as the KPCC president, while pointing out that S M Krishna was the last Vokkaliga leader to lead the party in the polls and then went on to become the CM in 1999.</p>

<p>In fact in this election, the Congress has significantly improved its electoral performance in the Vokkaliga-dominated Old Mysuru region (south Karnataka) and that credit largely goes to Shivakumar.</p>

<p>Also, there have been instances in the party that whoever has successfully led as KPCC President in election, have been the natural choice to be the CM, like in the case of Krishna and Veerendra Patil.</p>

<p>Siddaramaiah, who has seniority on his side, is known for able administrative skills, and has the experience of having run a successful tenure as the Chief Minister. He also enjoys the distinction of having presented 13 budgets for the state as Finance Minister.</p>

<p>Being a mass leader, he has considerable clout among the AHINDA (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits) class. The mega 75th birthday bash of Siddaramaiah held last year in Davanagere was largely seen as an attempt by him and his loyalists to project him as the future CM.</p>

<p>Seventy-five-year-old Siddaramaiah, who has already announced that this was his last election, has been maintaining that the chief minister will be elected by the newly elected MLAs in consultation with the party's high command.</p>

Karnataka Assembly polls: Congress and BJP set for a close contest

<p>With exit poll predictions giving an edge to the Congress party over Bharatiya Janata Party in the Karnataka Assembly Elections, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he was confident that BJP will come to power with a 'complete majority'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All the exit polls predicted that Yogi Adityanath will not come back but he came back in Uttar Pradesh. Last time, they (exit polls) predicted only 80 seats for BJP and 107 for Congress but it came reverse... We are confident with our ground reports and we will come with a comfortable majority," Bommai, while speaking with news agency ANI, said on Thursday.</p>

<p>As per the exit poll projections, Congress is expected to finish ahead of the BJP. Some pollsters have indicated the possibility of a hung assembly in the state.</p>

<p>On Wednesday (10 May), after the polling ended for the Karnataka elections 2023, CM Bommai while speaking with ANI, was optimistic that exit polls got it all wrong and that he was confident with his party's ground reports.</p>

<p>"Exit polls are, after all, exit polls and even most projections are predicting a close finish. However, from what I have been able to pick up from our ground sources, it is 100 per cent clear that we are going to return with an absolute majority. The real outcome will only be known on May 13. So, let's wait for the result day," Bommai said.</p>

<p>"Exit polls aren't 100 per cent accurate. There will be a five per cent variation in all poll projections, plus and minus, which could make all the difference in the end," he added.</p>

<p>As polling concluded for the Karnataka Elections, the majority of the exit polls have given an edge to the grand old party, Congress with some predicting a hung assembly with an advantage to the party.</p>

<p>Some pollsters have indicated the possibility of a hung assembly in the state predicting former Indian PM, HD Deve Gowda's Janata Dal-Secular to play the role of kingmaker. &nbsp;</p>

<p>While India Today-Axis My India exit poll, News24-Today's Chanakya, Times Now ETG-poll, Republic P-MARQ and India TV-CNX predicted Congress hitting a comfortable majority with at least 40 per cent in vote share, News Nation-CGS, Asianet Survana News-Jan Ki Baat predicted a win for BJP.</p>

<h2><strong>'I don't believe Exit poll numbers': </strong>Congress Karnataka's president DK Shivakumar</h2>

<p>Congress Karnataka's president DK Shivakumar, on Wednesday, said that he did not believe in the exit poll results and added that his party will cross the 146-seat mark.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Congress MLA said, "My first reaction (to the exit-poll projections) is that I don't believe these numbers. I stand by my assessment, that we will win more than 146 seats. People are knowledgeable and educated and have voted considering the larger interests of the state. The double engine has failed in Karnataka. Such a situation (which might prompt Congress to go into a post-poll alliance) will not arise."</p>

<p>As per an Election Commission report that released late on Wednesday night, the voter turnout stood at 72.67 per cent, excluding the postal ballots and home voting.</p>

<p>The counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly Elections&nbsp;will be taken up on May 13.</p>

With exit poll predictions giving an edge to the Congress party over Bharatiya Janata Party in the Karnataka Assembly Elections, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said he was confident that BJP will come to power with a 'complete majority'. "All the exit polls predicted that Yogi Adityanath will not come back but he came back in Uttar Pradesh. Last time, they (exit polls) predicted only 80 seats for BJP and 107 for Congress but it came reverse... We are confident with our ground reports and we will come with a comfortable majority," Bommai, while speaking with news agency ANI, said on Thursday. #WATCH | Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai reacts to Exit Polls on #KarnatakaAssemblyElection; says, "...As per our ground reports, we are confident we will get comfortable majority...We will get an absolute majority, mark my words." pic.twitter.com/t4sOS0Gu7M — ANI (@ANI) May 11, 2023 × As per the exit poll projections, Congress is expected to finish ahead of the BJP. Some pollsters have indicated the possibility of a hung assembly in the state. On Wednesday (10 May), after the polling ended for the Karnataka elections 2023, CM Bommai while speaking with ANI, was optimistic that exit polls got it all wrong and that he was confident with his party's ground reports. "Exit polls are, after all, exit polls and even most projections are predicting a close finish. However, from what I have been able to pick up from our ground sources, it is 100 per cent clear that we are going to return with an absolute majority. The real outcome will only be known on May 13. So, let's wait for the result day," Bommai said. "Exit polls aren't 100 per cent accurate. There will be a five per cent variation in all poll projections, plus and minus, which could make all the difference in the end," he added. As polling concluded for the Karnataka Elections, the majority of the exit polls have given an edge to the grand old party, Congress with some predicting a hung assembly with an advantage to the party. Some pollsters have indicated the possibility of a hung assembly in the state predicting former Indian PM, HD Deve Gowda's Janata Dal-Secular to play the role of kingmaker. While India Today-Axis My India exit poll, News24-Today's Chanakya, Times Now ETG-poll, Republic P-MARQ and India TV-CNX predicted Congress hitting a comfortable majority with at least 40 per cent in vote share, News Nation-CGS, Asianet Survana News-Jan Ki Baat predicted a win for BJP. 'I don't believe Exit poll numbers': Congress Karnataka's president DK Shivakumar Congress Karnataka's president DK Shivakumar, on Wednesday, said that he did not believe in the exit poll results and added that his party will cross the 146-seat mark. The Congress MLA said, "My first reaction (to the exit-poll projections) is that I don't believe these numbers. I stand by my assessment, that we will win more than 146 seats. People are knowledgeable and educated and have voted considering the larger interests of the state. The double engine has failed in Karnataka. Such a situation (which might prompt Congress to go into a post-poll alliance) will not arise." As per an Election Commission report that released late on Wednesday night, the voter turnout stood at 72.67 per cent, excluding the postal ballots and home voting. The counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly Elections will be taken up on May 13. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

H3N2 Influenza changing pattern unexpectedly: Experts warn more hospitalisations

<p>India reported its first two deaths from the H3N2 influenza on Friday, with one each from northern Haryana state and southern Karnataka state, PTI news agency reported quoting official sources.</p>

<p>So far, 90 cases of H3N2 have been reported over the last three months, they said.</p>

<p>An 82-year-old man from Karnataka's Hassan district was reportedly the first casualty in the country. Hire Gowda, a diabetic who suffered from hypertension, was admitted to a hospital on February 24. He died on March 1.</p>

<p>Later, a sample was sent for test, following which on March 6 it was confirmed that he was infected by the virus, the officials said.</p>

<p>"It is confirmed that Hire Gowda, 82,&nbsp;son of Halage Gowda, died of H3N2 virus on March 1," the Hassan District Health Officer (DHO) told PTI.</p>

<p>While another case was reported from Haryana.</p>

<p>India has been witnessing a spike in flu cases for the last few months. The majority of these infections were found to be from the H3N2 virus, also referred to as the "Hong Kong flu". Currently, only H3N2 and H1N1 viruses have been identified in India.</p>

The police officials rushed to the spot and are probing the reason behind the explosion and fire. Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra also suspected it to be a terror-related incident. Citing the incident, Karnataka home minister said that the state police have launched an intensive investigation into the auto-rickshaw blast that took place in Mangaluru. "Along with the state police, central investigation teams will also join hands. The investigation will proceed swiftly," he said. "Persons injured in the incident are being given good treatment," he added. Earlier on Saturday, Commissioner of Police (CP) of Mangaluru City N Shashi Kumar said, "At around 5 pm today, an auto rickshaw caught fire in the Kankanadi Police Station area. The reason behind the fire was a bag being carried by a passenger riding in the auto. The auto driver and passenger sustained burn injuries and have been admitted to the hospital." CP Kumar further appealed to the local people not to believe any rumours. "Forensic Science Lab team has been called to probe the reason behind the fire. The public should not pay heed to any rumours," he said. Further investigation is underway. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
