India’s former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its actions to safeguard domestic cricket on Friday (Mar 1). According to the legendary player, the decision by the BCCI to mandate players to play in domestic cricket will only protect the sport. The BCCI recently announced the contracts for national team players with Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer missing out on having opted to stay away from domestic cricket despite being available.

“I congratulate the BCCI for taking the much-needed step to protect the status of domestic cricket. I was sad to see domestic cricket being given the skip by players once they had established themselves in international cricket. It was high time the message was given and this strong step by the BCCI will go a long way in restoring the prestige of domestic cricket,” Dev said while speaking to news agency PTI.

“I have always believed in the process of international players making themselves available to play for their respective states. It helps them extend their support to domestic players. Also it is a nice way to pay back for the services rendered by the state association in grooming a player,” he added.

It is to be noted that India kicked off their campaign in the 2023-25 WTC cycle with a two-match Test series versus hosts West Indies, winning 1-0. They were in a dominant position in the second and final Test, in Trinidad, at stumps on Day Four. The visitors needed eight more wickets as West Indies were 76&nbsp;for 2 in chase of 365 but rain washed out the entire final day. Thus, Rohit &amp; Co. missed out on a likely series whitewash and adding more points in their kitty in the WTC cycle.

Kapil believes India should take a leaf out of England's Bazball as he hailed the recently-held Ashes 2023, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate in the United Kingdom.

<h2>'Ashes 2023 was one of the finest series'</h2>

"Bazball is wonderful. The series between England and Australia was one of the finest series I have seen in recent times. I think cricket should be played like that. Rohit is good. But he must be more aggressive," Kapil&nbsp;told The Times of India.

"You have to think about how teams like England play now. And it's not just us. All cricket-playing countries have to think on those lines. Winning the game should be the highest priority (not play for draws) for all teams," he added.

Talking about the Ashes, England conceded a 2-0 lead to Pat Cummins-led Australia after losing the opening two games by a whisker. Nonetheless, they did not deter from their aggressive approach as Bazball continued to inspire in the remainder of the series. As a result, the home side won the third Test by three wickets and were very close to a win in the following game before rain had the final say.

In the series decider, Stokes &amp; Co. won by 49 runs to prevent a series loss at home. However, Australia walked away by retaining the urn. The series was a memorable affair which displayed England's free-flowing approach -- termed as Bazball since McCullum took over --&nbsp;to the fore.

In an interview with The Week, Kapil reacted to an old statement from his former teammate Sunil Gavaskar, where the Little Master revealed that&nbsp;the current Indian players have never called him up for help despite going through rough patches, unlike yesteryear superstars such as Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, etc.

To this, Kapil opined, "Sometimes, when too much money comes, arrogance comes. These cricketers, they feel they know everything. That's the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Why should there be ego? They feel they are good enough. Maybe they are good enough, but extra help from somebody, who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, won't hurt. He knows which side the grass grows and where the sun comes out from."

Now, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has reacted to all such claims. In a press conference ahead of the final ODI versus the Windies, Jadeja said, "I didn't know when he said this. I don't search too many things on social media. Everyone has their own opinion. It's nothing like that. Everybody is enjoying their game and working hard. Players are not taking their place in the team for granted. Whenever they are getting chances, they are giving their 100 per cent and trying to win games for India."

Hardik Pandya led the side as the second-stringed Indian team lost by six wickets, in defence of 181. The series is up for grabs and India will be desperate to not concede the series to a team that is not even going to participate in the upcoming 50-over World Cup.

Legendary former India captain Kapil Dev has termed Rohit Sharma’s men as favourites for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India as they prepare to add more trophies to their already impressive cabinet. Kapil on Tuesday, July 25 spoke on the Indian team’s approach while terming them favourites for&nbsp;the&nbsp;International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament. He also spoke on the fitness issue of the team and warned them to necessary precautions.

<h2>Kapil terms India favourites</h2>

"I don't know how it will pan out. They are yet to announce the team for the World Cup. India will always enter a tournament as favourites as it has been the case for a long time," Kapil said while in conversation with PTI.

India will be one of the favourites alongside Australia and defending champions England to win the World Cup that will get underway on October 5. Rohit Sharma will be tasked to take the Indian team home and could become just the third captain to lead the nation to a World Cup win after Kapil and MS Dhoni.

"It's all about how the team comes to terms with the expectations from all sides. We have won a World Cup at home, and I am sure the team, whoever gets selected, can do it again. A World Cup is coming in four years, and I hope the players will be fully prepared," Kapil added.

Kapil led India to the 1983 World Cup saw the country lift the prize asset at the expense of then world champions West Indies. Kapil’s army beat West Indies by 43 runs in the final and scripted history.

The 64-year-old however was concerned about the fitness regime and hopes there are not many complications as games will come thick and fast.

"My time was different as we hardly played so much cricket. Now, these players are playing some 10 months of cricket. So, managing your body is important to keep away from injuries. Everybody's body is different and they would require individual plans to preserve their fitness," the former skipper added.

India will start their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan on October 15 in Ahmedabad. The final of the ODI World Cup will take place on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium with India hoping to add a third ODI World Cup title and first since 2011.

The investigations are still on. On Sunday (May 28), the protesting wrestlers marched towards the new parliament on the day of its inauguration for justice. However, they were detained by the Delhi Police.

As a result, Bajrang &amp; Co. decided to immerse their medals in the holy river Ganges in the city of Haridwar on Tuesday (May 31) but backed&nbsp;out later. On Friday (June 02), India's 1983 World Cup winning team also reacted to the wrestlers' protest and urged them not to throw their medals in the Ganges.

We urge them not to take any hasty decision in this matter and also fervently hope that their grievances are heard and resolved quickly. Let the law of the land prevail."

Thus, the protest has led to reactions from several athletes in the country. However, not many top Indian cricketers have given their response and their silence has not been well received by Vinesh Phogat. The World Championship medalist launched a scathing attack on the Indian cricketers and told the Indian Express, "The entire country worships cricket but not even a single cricketer has spoken up. We aren’t saying that you speak in our favour, but at least put up a neutral message and say there should be justice for whichever party."

She further opined, "It’s not like we don’t have big athletes in our country. There are cricketers… During the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, they showed their support. Don’t we deserve even that much?"

Vinesh added, "You do come forward to congratulate us when we win something. Even the cricketers tweet when that happens. Abhi kya ho gaya? (What has happened now?) Are you so afraid of the system? Speaking on the comparison, Kapil said since Surya has been a regular in the T20I team for over two years now, he deserves to get picked; and even though he attained an unwanted record to his name, SKY should not be discounted, and instead, the management must persist with him.

"A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don't compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn't seem right. Former India captain Kapil Dev went an extra mile in applauding the man-in-form in T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav by calling him ‘once in a century’ player. SKY, as his fans often call him, slammed his third hundred in this format against Sri Lanka in the final T20I in Rajkot, becoming only the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to touch this number. Showering praises on him while speaking with ABP news, Kapil said though he has seen some of the best cricketers play live including Sachin Tendulkar, Ab de Villiers, Ricky Ponting and even Viv Richards, none could strike the cricket ball as clean and smooth as Suryakumar.

Coming on to bat inside the Powerplay, Surya didn’t waste any time and started hammering the bowlers from the word go. After completing his fifty in 26 balls, SKY went into the 360 degree mode, hitting sixes to every part of the ground, including three to his favourite region in the fine-leg. "Sometimes I am at a loss of words on how to describe his knock. When we see Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, we feel that someday there will be a player who will compel us to think he is also part of that list," Kapil Dev told ABP news.

"There is indeed a lot of talent in India. And the kind of cricket he plays, that lap shot the one over fine leg, then that leaves the bowler frightened because he can stand and hit a six over mid-on and mid-wicket. That is what makes it difficult for the bowlers because he is able to pick the line and length consistently. I have seen great batters like De Villiers, Vivian Richards, Sachin, Virat, Ricky Ponting, but very few can hit the ball as cleanly as him. Hats off to Suryakumar Yadav. These kinds of players come only once in a century," he&nbsp;added.

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the Indian team management to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik in the Men in Blue's clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). Kapil also backed struggling KL Rahul to find his form soon in the ongoing tournament. Rahul has looked completely out of touch in the first two games and has managed only 13 runs so far. The former India captain said Rahul needs to be patient at the top and take his time initially as he has the skills to accelerate when needed.

"He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn't appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it," said Kapil.

Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the Indian team management to play Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik in the Men in Blue's clash against South Africa in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30). India have gotten off to a flying start in the tournament with two wins in their first two games and will be hoping to maintain their winning streak in the third Super 12 clash against the Proteas. Karthik has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter so far in the tournament but hasn't got too many chances to impress as he bats in the lower-middle order as the team's designated finisher. While he hasn't batted enough, he hasn't been flawless while keeping wickets. Speaking ahead of the crucial clash against South Africa, Kapil India should look at playing Pant as he will provide a left-hand option in the middle order and his wicket-keeping can be like a breath of fresh air for the team making it look complete. "I want to say that since we have Rishabh Pant, now is the time India need him. It felt as if Dinesh Karthik would get the job done, but factoring in the wicketkeeping as well, I feel that if India have that left-hander option in the team, this team would look complete," Kapil said on ABP News. Rahul has looked completely out of touch in the first two games and has managed only 13 runs so far. The former India captain said Rahul needs to be patient at the top and take his time initially as he has the skills to accelerate when needed. "He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn't appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it," said Kapil. A win on Sunday will ensure India remain in the top spot in Group 2 of Super 12.
