Watch: Kamala Harris under fire for Pledge of Allegiance slip-up; JD Vance caught laughing

As the year 2024 winds up, does anyone remember Kamala Harris? The US vice president's presidential candidacy was probably the costliest cameo in American politics. She came, she saw, but she didn't conquer. How does one assess the sudden burst into fame and subsequent fading away of the president's deputy, which made her boss Joe Biden the only president who beat Trump, and had the last laugh?

Harris' forced entry into the presidential race sometime in August was fraught with moral and political disgust and disbelief from the word go. For one, it reeked of conspiracy and backstabbing.

Those who were campaigning for Biden, including Barack Obama, suddenly ditched him. Biden, as per reports, resisted till the last moment. A multitude of media stories were planted against him, focused on his physical ability and mental acuity to run for office, let alone do the job if elected.

Nancy Pelosi and other senior leaders put pressure on him to quit the race just days after his dismal performance at the presidential debate, which made eventual winner Trump look good.

But if Biden was incoherent due to his advanced age, Harris was incoherent due to her sheer ignorance. That's unforgivable. She was widely derided for making up phrases and 'word salads ' out of thin air to dodge important questions being asked of her. This was most evident in how she answered a question on the Israel-Hamas war and the US position on it.

The answer was so bad that CBS edited it out (or edited it 'in' depending on who you ask), to make it better than it really was. But the only problem was that both 'versions' ended up airing, probably due to some editorial oversight (or ingenuity?).

The CBS interview was only one of a media blitzkrieg that the Harris campaign unleashed between August and November. She was everywhere: on news channels, streaming platforms, online and social media. Most of her appearances only served to expose how out of touch she was with the American public and its concerns, even while stressing at every opportunity that she was from the middle class.

The woman card didn't play out either: Democrats had hoped that the abortion ban in much of America in the wake of a Supreme Court judgement would be a big election issue. Harris even tried painting Trump as anti-women, citing his stance on abortion and the hush money case involving porn performer Stormy Daniels. In the final reckoning, none of that washed.

Trump's campaign deployed several women to speak in favour of him, including some evening TV news regulars who, frankly, were more famous than Harris.

They openly advocated for Trump's alpha male personality, giving legitimacy to the 'give such a big job to a man' chauvinist chorus.

Frankly, Harris' Indian and African mixed heritage did hardly anything to bolster her numbers. For one, many African Americans were mighty displeased with her back in the day when she was a public prosecutor in California.

She sent to jail many African Americans and that was a record that couldn't be white-washed. In her appearances before the African Americans, she and other established leaders like the Obamas appeared to be lecturing and even hectoring the crowd.

The ad implied that Black men who do not vote Democrat would not have luck with the ladies boomeranged severely. It appeared to reassert the stereotype that Black males are promiscuous and would rather vote for Harris than not get the girls.

Indian Americans, to whom Harris partially belonged, weren't enthused either by her candidacy or not by the Indian government establishment, given her stance on issues like Kashmir which was seen as anti-India.

However, it appeared for some time that the media in India was more interested in her candidacy than in America.

The US left-liberal media indeed tried to make her look like the winner. Till the election night, there was smug confidence that the results were a foregone conclusion in favour of Harris.

That misplaced confidence was a result of stage-managed opinion polls in the weeks leading up to the election. Practically every pollster, except the clearly right-wing biased ones, said Harris was winning.

It was not to be.

The studios of left-liberal news channels saw meltdowns as Harris lost state after state after state. None of the expected supporters of Harris voted for her in large numbers: not women, not Blacks.

Even then, to her credit, Harris did give a tough fight, given how late she entered the race. This makes one wonder: was she given a raw deal, being made to run an unwinnable race?
Harris took the defeat hard.

In fact, having been born in Pretoria, he is ineligible to become president. Nonetheless, he is running the show. You know that, but it bears repeating."

King's history of Musk criticism

This is not the first time the horror genre author has criticised Musk. In the lead-up to November's election, Musk shared a video alleging Vice President Kamala Harris supported "mandatory gun confiscation," alleging that "She wants to break the Constitution". King swiftly dismissed the claim, calling it "ridiculous." He later urged his followers to vote for Harris: "IF YOU LOVE DEMOCRACY, PLEASE VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS".

Earlier, King addressed rumours that Musk had banned him from posting on X (formerly Twitter). Speculation suggested King had referred to Musk as Trump's "first lady," angering the Tesla CEO and leading to a ban. King, however, clarified the rumour on Threads, stating, "I didn't [say it], but only because I didn't think of it."

Stephen King, the popular horror writer behind bestsellers like 'IT,' 'The Shining,' and 'Pet Sematary,' on Saturday (Dec 21), slammed Elon Musk, and issued a stark warning over his influence over US president-elect Donald Trump. Taking to Threads, Meta's alternative to X, King said that even though the Tesla CEO isn't the President-elect, he was "running the show". Stephen King's warning As the US prepares for Trump's second presidency, with his inauguration slated for 20 January, the acclaimed author on Threads said, "You can't call Elon Musk the President-elect, because he wasn't elected. In fact, having been born in Pretoria, he is ineligible to become president. Nonetheless, he is running the show. You know that, but it bears repeating."
US President-elect Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register newspaper and its top pollster, court documents showed, the day after he stepped up his legal threats against news outlets and said he would also consider suing social media influencers and others for defamation.

The lawsuit filed Monday night in Polk County seeks "accountability for brazen election interference committed by" the newspaper and pollster J. Ann Selzer over its poll published on Nov. 2. That poll showed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris leading Trump by 13 percentage points in Iowa.

"Selzer’s polling 'miss' was not an astonishing coincidence—it was intentional," the lawsuit said. "As President Trump observed: 'She knew exactly what she was doing'."

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and an order barring the Des Moines Register from engaging in "ongoing deceptive and misleading acts and practices" related to polling.

Gannett, parent company of the Des Moines Register, is also named in the suit. A Gannett representative said the organisation stands by its reporting and believes the suit is without merit.

In his remarks to reporters on Monday, Trump threatened to sue the Des Moines Register over the poll. "In my opinion, it was fraud and it was election interference," Trump said.

Also read: 'Mealy-mouth politician', 'lies' and more: DeSantis and Haley engage in verbal battle at pre-Iowa debate

“It costs a lot of money to do it, but we have to straighten out the press,” Trump also told reporters.

Some legal experts say Trump's comments and legal actions risk chilling news coverage of the incoming administration even if legal protections for journalists are for now robust.

“There is some serious concern that the erosion of legal protections could lead to less aggressive news coverage,” said Syracuse University communications professor Roy Gutterman.

He pointed to the ABC settlement as a possible example of a news organization fearing retribution from the Trump administration, noting that the high cost of litigation could have also influenced the network’s decision.

On Dec. 14, Walt Disney-owned ABC News agreed to give $15 million to Trump’s presidential library to settle a lawsuit over comments that anchor George Stephanopoulos made on air.

The comments involved the civil cases brought against Trump by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of sexually assaulting her at a New York department store in the 1990s.

Stephanopoulos said Trump was found liable for rape, but a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse. New York law distinguishes the two offenses.

Trump is appealing the jury verdict in that case and a judge's ruling in a related lawsuit brought by Carroll.

An ABC News spokesperson said in a statement that the network was pleased that the parties reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit.

As part of the settlement, ABC agreed to publish an editor's note stating that the network and Stephanopoulos "regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump" made during the interview in question.

On Monday, Trump also mentioned his lawsuit against CBS News over an interview with Harris that aired on its "60 Minutes" news programme in October. The lawsuit, which seeks $1 billion in damages, claimed that the interview had been deceptively edited.

CBS has said the suit is "completely without merit" and has asked a judge to dismiss the case.

Trump claimed on Monday that “60 Minutes” participated in ”fraud and election interference."

Targeting legal protections for journalists

Any lawsuits by Trump would still face steep hurdles in court because U.S. law has some of the strongest protections in the world for news coverage of public figures.

Longstanding legal precedent holds that public figures must prove defendants knew or strongly suspected something was false but said it anyway, a standard known as “actual malice” that is notoriously difficult to prove in court.

Trump has said this legal standard should be changed, and some U.S. Supreme Court justices have expressed willingness to reexamine the precedent.

“The standard remains a strong one, the strongest in the western world,” said Boston School of Law professor Jeffrey Pyle.

Even if lawsuits by Trump were to fail, they could create headaches for news organizations by publicly revealing potentially embarrassing internal communications and exposing journalists and executives to depositions.

In the ABC lawsuit, some legal experts said the network could have prevailed because Stephanopoulos' comments appeared to be an innocent mistake and not the type of reckless disregard that Trump would have to prove.

A judge denied ABC's motion to dismiss the case in July, rejecting the network's claim that it was broadly protected under Florida laws shielding news organizations from liability for accurate reporting on information received from government officials.

That order only concerned several initial legal questions and did not mean Trump would have ultimately won.

Trump claimed on Monday that “60 Minutes” participated in ”fraud and election interference." Targeting legal protections for journalists Any lawsuits by Trump would still face steep hurdles in court because U.S. law has some of the strongest protections in the world for news coverage of public figures.
Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles is setting the record straight. The 70-year-old took to Instagram recently to debunk rumours circulating online which alleged that her daughter was paid $10 million to appear at the United States Vice President and then-Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' Houston rally in October.

Not just Beyonce, but celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Megan Thee Stallion, and Cardi B have also faced similar accusations. Several celebrities have come forward to slam such reports.

Was Beyoncé paid $10 million for the Harris rally?

Beyonce's mother set the record straight on Monday (Nov 18) as she took to Instagram to slam the baseless rumours and stated that Queen Bey was not paid any money for her appearance at the rally. Taking to her social media handle on November 18, the House of Deréon founder wrote, “So this has been flagged on Instagram as fake news and taken down. It’s called False Information,” alongside a screenshot of a blurred-out post originally shared on political commentator Candace Owens’ podcast account. She added, “Sadly, other platforms with a lack of integrity still have it up.”

“The lie is that Beyonce was paid 10 million dollars to speak at a rally in Houston for Vice President Kamala Harris,” continued. “Beyonce did not receive a penny for speaking at a Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris’s Rally in Houston.” '

According to Knowles, the singer even paid out of her own pocket for flights, her team, and glam—echoing Cardi B's recent remarks when she called out Owens for questioning the rumoured payment.

This was followed by Oprah Winfrey’s town hall appearance for the campaign. She added, “Sadly, other platforms with a lack of integrity still have it up.” “The lie is that Beyonce was paid 10 million dollars to speak at a rally in Houston for Vice President Kamala Harris,” continued. “Beyonce did not receive a penny for speaking at a Presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris’s Rally in Houston.” ' According to Knowles, the singer even paid out of her own pocket for flights, her team, and glam—echoing Cardi B's recent remarks when she called out Owens for questioning the rumoured payment.
With Democratic Party supporters still recovering from the election loss to Trump, a question is being asked where did the billion dollars raised by Harris' campaign go?

A report by The Times on Saturday (Nov 16) said that of the total campaign money raised, $15 million was spent on slick celebrity endorsements, over $4 million on influencer marketing and what is estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars to put Harris’s face on the Las Vegas Sphere.

The Times report also said that Harris' campaign spent far more money than that of Trump. According to the non-profit research group, OpenSecrets, president-elect Trump’s official campaign spent $345 million.

Speaking to the publication, Jimmy Keady, a former Republican staffer in the House and now a strategist, said that Trump was very strategic in spending money on talking about the issues that people cared about.

US election: Where did Kamala Harris' campaign money of $1 billion go?

United States Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign did not pay millions of dollars for celebrity endorsements ahead of the 2024 elections, a former top campaign official said on Friday (Nov 15).

“We do not pay. We have never paid any artist and performer,” Adrienne Elrod, who served as senior adviser and senior spokesperson for the Harris campaign, told Deadline.

The Harris campaign held several star-studded events, leading up to the Democrat’s defeat by President-elect Donald Trump.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Megan Thee Stallion, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, 2 Chainz, and Mumford & Sons were among the artists who performed in support of Harris' campaign in an effort to get low-propensity voters out to the polls.

Moreover, Grammy Award-winning artists Beyonce, Cardi B, and Jennifer Lopez also appeared on the stage for Harris but did not perform, which disappointed the VP’s supporters.

Under the Federal Election Commission rules, Elrod said that the Harris campaign was required to pay fair market value "for any ancillary costs" of performances, including wages for band members and producers.

“There are laws that have to be followed that we have followed religiously on this campaign,” she said.

Reportedly, a series of election-eve events alone cost the campaign $20 million.
