US Elections 2024: 'America is Entering A New Golden Age', Says Donald Trump

As the US election enters its final phase, global investors are bracing for a potential shakeup in financial markets. With the outcome still uncertain, attention is focused on the results expected later today, as the tight race between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic contender Kamala Harris has already triggered market volatility in recent weeks, as detailed in a report by Reuters.

The election's impact could be far-reaching, influencing US tax, trade policies, and broader economic prospects, factors that affect not only the US but the global financial landscape.

One of the most contentious elections in modern US history

This election is shaping up to be one of the most unusual and contentious in modern US history, marked by a razor-thin margin between the two candidates. The results could have wide-ranging consequences for US debt, the strength of the dollar, and industries across corporate America, the Reuters report elaborated further.

With control of Congress also up for grabs, the final outcome may be delayed, further fuelling uncertainty. Investors are particularly concerned about the possibility of contested results, reminiscent of the 2000 Bush-Gore race that saw the outcome of the election undecided for over a month.

Mike Mullaney, director of global markets research at Boston Partners, emphasised the significance of the election, describing it as “the most significant I have seen in my career.” The uncertainty surrounding the results could lead to volatility in global financial markets, especially in the hours following the first vote tallies.

Investors will be closely monitoring key battleground states for early indications, but meaningful results from some of these areas might not emerge until later in the night, heightening the sense of unpredictability.

Despite the election uncertainty, US stocks have performed strongly in 2024, with the S&P 500 hitting record highs thanks to strong corporate earnings and a robust economy, aided by Federal Reserve rate cuts. However, the performance of assets tied to Trump’s standing in the polls has been mixed.

On Election Day, the S&P 500 closed up 1.2 per cent on positive economic data, while certain "Trump trades" i.e., assets influenced by Trump's policy proposals, showed volatility. For instance, stocks related to Trump Media surged initially but closed lower, while bitcoin saw a 4 per cent increase, as betting markets leaned in favor of Trump’s re-election.

The so-called “Trump trades” have been driven by expectations that a second Trump term would bring looser regulations, tax cuts, and tariff hikes, particularly targeting countries like Mexico, which has led to sharp declines in the Mexican peso. Yields on US Treasuries have risen in anticipation of higher inflation, another potential consequence of Trump's policies.

On the other hand, a Kamala Harris presidency would likely result in higher taxes, stricter regulations, and a push for green energy initiatives. Harris' policies could also lead to greater support for clean energy, a shift that could impact energy and related sectors. The battle for control of Congress will also be crucial, as both candidates will likely need to secure their party’s dominance in the legislature to implement significant policy changes.

While historical trends show that stocks tend to rally after elections, especially once the result is clear, investors are concerned that a prolonged or contested vote count could cause turbulence in the markets. As the election results unfold, many are hoping for a swift and decisive outcome to reduce uncertainty and avoid a repeat of the 2000 election recount crisis, which saw the S&P 500 drop by 5 per cent.

As the financial world watches closely, many analysts remain cautious, anticipating that markets will likely experience volatility in the coming days. “An unclear election is a big problem,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. "There’s a lot going on in the geopolitical arena, and investors are anxious about how it all plays out."

A caravan of approximately 3,000 migrants set off on Tuesday from southern Mexico, headed toward the United States on the day when U.S. voters were deciding between U.S. presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Immigration has been a key issue in the U.S. election campaign.

Before heading northward, the migrants gathered in Tapachula, the capital of the southern Chiapas state, carrying banners with messages such as "NO MORE MIGRANT BLOOD" and images of the Virgin of Guadalupe, an important religious and cultural symbol in Mexico, according to Reuters witnesses.

US Elections 2024: Netanyahu Congratulates President Donald Trump After Victory

Sometimes the context of an event is more important than the event in question. It might seem like a contradiction in terms but there's a strange subtext to Donald Trump's comeback term at the White House: A strong president need not mean a strong presidency.

While analysts are still splitting hairs on what made Democratic nominee Kamala Harris lose to the brash, rude, and officially convicted Trump, it is better to look ahead at what the difficult but convincing win might eventually mean for him, the US, and the world at large.

As the real estate tycoon-turned-Republican leader made what looked like a victory speech, one could notice in his tone a sense of pragmatic conciliation that stood somewhat in contrast to his first time at the White House when his late-night announcements on the then Twitter (now X) and his combative hire-and-fire approach in dealing with aides made him an obnoxious figure.

Personalities don't change easily but it seems that now there will be a lot of "trying" as distinct from the definitive promise of "doing".

Can Trump seriously build a wall or boost troops at the Mexico border to stop illegal immigrants? Can he seriously fix inflation and the high cost of living? Questions like these need to be answered by administrative action that may not be easy to execute.

Also read: 'God spared my life for a reason': Trump hails election victory in rousing speech; here are the top quotes

The Presidency is not just about what an elected leader does or tries to do but also about the circumstances in which he is functioning. On that count, Trump is up against odds.

True, the Republicans now control the Senate that decides key appointments and it almost looks like the Republicans will also take the House of Representatives in Congress, the US parliament. That makes money bills easier to pass. However, Trump's new term also faces a technological revolution in artificial intelligence and other fields that can have a disruptive effect on jobs.

The strange thing is that employment data and high GDP growth show that the US economy is doing great but as a commentator put it, "It doesn't feel that way" because of high gas prices and mortgage rates.

While tax cuts can increase purchasing power for the average American, one cannot be too sure of how that can help beyond a point. A high budget deficit in which interest payments take away 23 per cent of government revenues is a key challenge.

The US's deficit-to-GDP ratio towers over other developed economies. Public debt is uneasily high. All these are ominous when the BRICS group of emerging economies has increased its cohesion and purpose and points to alternate currency arrangements that threaten the US dollar 's global leadership.

A potentially weaker dollar can complicate Trump's efforts to fix the economy for the average American. Also read: 'God spared my life for a reason': Trump hails election victory in rousing speech; here are the top quotes The Presidency is not just about what an elected leader does or tries to do but also about the circumstances in which he is functioning. Abortion rights are a major issue in the 2024 United States presidential elections and former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump does not wanna talk about it.

On Tuesday (Nov 5), aka Election Day, when asked twice by reporters about how he voted on Florida's abortion ballot, Trump got testy and snapped at a reporter: “Stop talking about that”.

Florida's abortion ballot

Florida is one of ten states that have an abortion on the ballot this election.

Voters, along with voting for the next US president, will also closely watch the abortion rights amendment in Florida.

If passed, Florida's Amendment 4 would overturn the state’s stringent six-week ban and bar the state from enacting any restrictions on abortion until a foetus is viable, typically around 21 weeks.

Trump snaps at reporter

After voting in Palm Beach, Florida, the White House hopeful had a press session. There, Trump was questioned about how he voted on Florida's abortion ballot.

Initially, he dodged the question, deflecting instead to his own legacy on the issue. Trump said he did “a great job bringing it back to the states,” pointing to his role in appointing three conservative justices who tipped the US Supreme Court’s balance and paved the way for the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.

2024 US Elections: List of states won by Republican candidate Donald Trump

Donald Trump is making his comeback as the 47th President of the United States, fending off a tough challenge from Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Addressing a roaring crowd of supporters at his election night watch party at the West Palm Beach Convention Centre in Florida, Trump said that the poll results were historic and that he would not rest until he and his Republican Party delivered a strong and prosperous America.

"America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate," Trump said.

“Every single day, I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body,” he further added.

Fox News projected that Trump had defeated Harris, the other news outlets are yet to call the race for the Republican candidate. However, as per the latest projections by the news agency Associated Press, he is just three votes away from winning 270 of the total 538 votes in the Electoral College.

Trump hails election victory

In his rousing victory speech, Trump said, "We are going to help our country heal, we are going to help our country heal. We have a country that needs help and it needs help very badly."

Trump's alarmist messaging is reminiscent of the 'stop the steal' movement that happened soon after it emerged on 2020 Election Night that he was losing. That protest snowballed into the Capitol Hill riot of 2021 on January 6.

Trump's surrogates and supporters are filling social media with memes with hashtags like 'stay in line' and 'too big to rig,' making it clear that they want only one outcome this election night.
