Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is delighted his side have the chance to win a first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> title in 30 years on the field after the uncertainty of a three-month halt to the season due to coronavirus.

The Reds hold a commanding 22-point lead at the top of the table and will seal the much-awaited title with victories over Everton on Sunday and when Crystal Palace visit Anfield on Wednesday.

Had the Premier League not been able to resume with the UK the worst-hit country in Europe from COVID-19, various proposals were discussed as to how the campaign would be decided.

The idea of declaring the season null and void gained little support and Klopp was relieved when that was taken off the table with Liverpool on course to smash a series of records after 29 games.

"I became worried in the moment when people started talking about null and void the season because I was like 'wow', I felt it physically because that would have been really, really, really hard," Klopp said in a pre-match videoconference ahead of Liverpool's return to action.

Had the Premier League followed the example of some other leagues around Europe by ending the season on a points-per-game basis, Liverpool would already be champions.

But Klopp is glad to have the opportunity to win it on the pitch, even if no fans will be in the stadium to witness the historic moment.

"We don't expect to get it as a present so we did not want it to happen on points-per-game (PPG). We were really happy when it was decided we could play again," he added.

"There were moments, you know how long the discussions were, people brought it up (null and void) from time to time for different reasons. When that was off the table I felt quite relieved.

"Now we are here. If they had done PPG and we could not have played we would probably be champions. Now we aren't, we have to play for it.

"That is great, that is how it should be in sports. Now we go for it. We do not think in our mind we are already there."

Liverpool will join the Premier League wide movement to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign with BLM replacing players' names on the back of shirts this weekend.

Klopp's squad took a knee on their return to group training earlier this month in solidarity with the fight against racial injustice.

The first two Premier League games of the restart on Wednesday were also preceded by all players and officials taking a knee.

Klopp has been outspoken on political and societal issues in the past and labelled the need to still be fighting racism in 2020 as "unbelievably dumb".&nbsp;

"If football is a role model for anything in life it is for that, that everybody is the exactly same, wherever you come from, it is all about who you are, not which colour you are," he added.

"It's so unbelievably dumb not to do it like this, it is really hard for me to even understand it.

"But it is like this so we have to stand up or we have to kneel down, whatever we have to do we will do just to solve this situation for now and for the future because the past we cannot change, but the future we can change."

Klopp relieved to escape 'null and void' outcome in Premier League

Jurgen Klopp believes there is still room for improvement from Liverpool despite their incredible Premier League campaign, which is on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Reds were 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City and on the verge of their first top-flight title since 1990 when football was halted last month.

But Klopp said Liverpool, who won the Champions League last year and have only lost one Premier League match all season, could get even better.

"We will not change, that's the first thing, but whether we will be successful depends on what other clubs are doing as well because they have all the chance to improve things, do things better," he told Sky Sports.

"So I have no clue what the future will hold for us. But we will not change, this team is not the finished article, and we have a lot of space for improvement, and we work on that.

"We have fresh blood internally coming through. We can improve with this team, which is great."

Klopp does not believe football should be "forced back" after the COVID-19 shutdown but admitted it could have a positive impact on the mood of the country.

There is no end in sight to the football lockdown in England but German football authorities are set to announce plans for Bundesliga matches to restart in empty stadiums on May 9.

"We are all at home, all isolated, we have no cases or stuff like this," said Klopp.

"If we come together and train in groups of two or five or six or eight, I'm not sure when that will be possible, we have to wait for the government on that. We cannot force that and will not, because we can't, there's absolutely nothing for that.

"But if football can help in some departments with lifting the mood, giving something to think about and to deal with in a different way, then we have to start training at one point, but I don't know when that will be."

Jurgen Klopp has finally revealed the details of the emotions that the club and he as a manager went through during Philippe Coutinho's exit.&nbsp;

Brazilian playmaker's switch to Camp Nou was considered "difficult" decision by the Reds, as told by Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool resisted the player's move to Barcelona, in fact, handed him a new contract but Countinho was still allowed to leave.&nbsp;

Philippe Coutinho moved to Barcelona in August 2018 after a $130 million deal was sanctioned.&nbsp;

During a local podcast, Klopp said: "I really respected Phil's switch from the first second.

"Not that I do that all the time but it felt oh wow that could be difficult.

"So it's not about yes we signed a new contract so many weeks before that but it was really clear he would not have asked me for any other club but for this club, there was no chance.

"Then we had to be hard in the summer because we had no other solution. We lost Adam Lallana [to injury] in that time as well, we would have lost two players.

"That's not possible, you cannot solve that on the transfer market.

"He was open to that [staying] and that was really cool. Then you have to be fair in the window and say we can do it, we don't like it but we can do it."

Coutinho has had a nightmare spell with the Catalonia giants, he is currently playing for the German side, Bayern Munich. But he still has not yet found his lost form.&nbsp;

There are a lot of concerns regarding this year's Premier League, many scenarios are being speculated by the officials and the fans. Will Liverpool be robbed of their league title after 30 years of excruciating wait? What about the players' records?&nbsp;

The Premier League has come to a halt till April 30 due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. The English League is on the verge of being cancelled after nearing a conclusion of 2019-20 season.&nbsp;

It is very likely that all goals, assists and appearances by players from the 2019-20 season will be cancelled should the current Premier League season be scrapped.

Despite financial losses, the biggest losers will be Liverpool. If the season gets cancelled, Reds will miss out a chance on lifting the league cup despite being 25 points clear from second-placed Manchester City.&nbsp;

Klopp's side has created and broken plenty of records this season. Liverpool equalled Manchester City's record 18-match Premier League winning streak and surpassed City's achievement of 20 consecutive home victories (taking their record to 22 games, following the win against Bournemouth).

Leicester City forward and league's top scorer James Vardy shall see his 19 goals being scrapped.&nbsp;

With the current situation, the pandemic has accelerated in terms of a surge in cases. The league will likely get further extended which means it'll be closer to cancellations.&nbsp;

Liverpool's reign as European champions ended after Diego Simeone's Atletico came from behind to score three goals in the injury time beat Jurgen Klopp's side 3-2 (Aggregate score 4-2) at Anfield to progress into quarterfinals.

Jurgen Klopp, the man who led Liverpool into Champions League finals in the previous two seasons said that Atletico did not play "proper football".

Klopp criticised the Spanish team's playing style, he said: "I don't understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter-attacks.

"We accept it, of course, but it doesn't feel right tonight. I realise I am a really bad loser, especially when the boys put such an effort in against world-class players on the other side who defend with two rows of four.

"We know in the past two years we had some lucky moments in the Champions League - you have to reach two finals - but today everything was against us in the decisive moments."

Reds lost the away first leg 1-0 against Atletico and were eyeing an overturn in the reverse fixture. Liverpool started well after Georginio Wijnaldum equalising the aggregate score in the 43rd minute. Robert Firminho 's extra-time goal (94th minute) helped Liverpool lead in the aggregate scores.

But Atletico's Marcos Llorente scored a brace in the 97th minute and 105+1 minutes taking the Spanish side forward.

Alvaro Morata's final time goal sealed an emphatic win over Liverpool and the defending champions were knocked out of the game.

It's not often that Liverpool legends visit the budding football nation India, but as part of the LFC world tour, former Reds Emile Heskey and Jason Mcateer are in New Delhi.

WION caught up with former England international Emile Heskey to speak on the Reds remarkable rise back to the top of English football.

It seemed like the reigning world and European champions would complete the league season unbeaten but a shock 3-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Watford demolished their aura of invincibility.

That was followed by a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday which ended their hopes of a treble.

Three defeats in the last four games is a slight cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp's men to which Heskey replied: "We are not concerned, with the manager we have here Jurgen Klopp, (he) will calm the squad down and reassure of the right path and it is just a minor blip and will resume business".

Premier League leaders Liverpool will have the opportunity to take another huge step towards a first-ever league title in 30 years against Bournemouth tomorrow. Heskey was asked if the Reds will consider this game as crucial to get back to winning ways to which he replied:&nbsp; "Every game is crucial if you are trying to push your players mentally and physically, the numbers they reckon currently are phenomenal." &nbsp;

When asked about the team's play in this year Heskey replied: "It is phenomenal to see them play, their fluency in the forward play and solid defence, I would like to play with this team. I love Firminho's play he makes a lot of things right and John Henderson is playing out of this world at this moment so everything is falling into place."

The Reds who found it difficult to even qualify for Europa are just four wins away from clinching that long-awaited league title. Heskey said: "The German (Klopp) has energized the team and the fans, he is doing a pretty good job."

Liverpool will face Chelsea in the last 16 at Stamford Bridge in March as they remain on course for a potential treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Klopp had turned over the responsibility of leading Liverpool to the club's under-23 coach Neil Critchley, who also took charge when the Reds played an under-strength side for their League Cup quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa earlier this season.

On that occasion, Klopp had a better excuse for his absence as Liverpool were in Qatar on course to win the Club World Cup.

This time, it was purely his decision to ignore the FA Cup, but resting Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and company at least gave fans a glimpse of the next generation.

With an average age of 19 years and 102 days, it was Liverpool's youngest ever starting line-up in all competitions.

There were seven teenagers, including 16-year-old Harvey Elliott, while Pedro Chirivella was the oldest player in the team at 22.

Liverpool-born teenager Curtis Jones became the club's youngest captain at 19 years and five days.

Liverpool had blown a two-goal lead in that original meeting, but several of these youngsters had helped stun Everton in the third round and once again they showcased their potential.

Despite dominating possession, Liverpool almost fell behind in the 58th minute when Shaun Whalley headed home, only to see VAR disallow the goal for offside against one of his team-mates in the build-up.

Liverpool made the most of that escape to win it in the 75th minute.

Neco Williams' long pass looked harmless but Ro-Shaun Williams tried to head back to O'Leary and, with the Shrewsbury keeper way off his line, the ball looped over him into the empty net.

"The manager sent a message prior to the game with some words of advice and support, which was fantastic," Critchley said of his contact with Klopp.

"He is delighted with the performance. There was a message at half-time and at full-time.

"He said Chelsea away could be an opportunity for one or two of them and they put in a performance tonight."

- Newcastle survive -
Newcastle reached the fifth round for the first time since 2006 after a dramatic 3-2 win at third tier Oxford.

Sean Longstaff opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Joelinton got on the scoresheet in the 30th minute, netting just his third goal since his big-money move from Hoffenheim last year.

But Liam Kelly got one back with a fine free-kick in the 84th minute before Nathan Holland equalised deep into stoppage-time.

Allan Saint-Maximin saved Newcastle's blushes four minutes from the end of extra-time to clinch a trip to second-tier West Bromwich Albion.

Wayne Rooney booked an emotional clash with his former club Manchester United as second-tier Derby cruised to a 4-2 win over Northampton at Pride Park.

Rooney scored Derby's fourth goal from the penalty spot to wrap up an emphatic victory that brought the prize of a reunion with 12-time FA Cup winners United.

The former England star, who recently joined Derby after a spell with DC United, spent 13 years with the Old Trafford club and won a host of major trophies before returning to Everton in 2017.

"He's going to face the club where he had a wonderful career so of course, it is special," Derby boss Phillip Cocu said.

"It's a proud moment for me to be the youngest player to captain the Reds. I’m happy that we topped it off with a win for our great fans." ❤️https://t.co/r5l0DVUMfn — Liverpool FC (@LFC) February 5, 2020 × Liverpool will face Chelsea in the last 16 at Stamford Bridge in March as they remain on course for a potential treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. "He said Chelsea away could be an opportunity for one or two of them and they put in a performance tonight." - Newcastle survive - Newcastle reached the fifth round for the first time since 2006 after a dramatic 3-2 win at third tier Oxford.

The European champions' now 14-game winning streak in the league seemed set to end as Raul Jimenez cancelled out Jordan Henderson's early opener.

Liverpool&nbsp;were even grateful to goalkeeper Alisson Becker for not falling behind in the second half.

However, like crucial victories against Leicester, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace earlier in the campaign,&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;left it late to snatch another vital three points in their quest to end a 30-year wait to win the title as Firmino smashed home six minutes from time.

"You just have to find a way to win and have someone who makes the perfect decision and that was Bobby again," said Klopp.

"A worldie I would say from Bobby, a super goal."

Liverpool, who now have 22 wins in 23 league games this season, also have a game in hand over second-placed Manchester City to come.

However, victory could still come at a cost as Mane hobbled off with a hamstring injury in the first half.

"We don't know exactly (the severity of the injury). He felt something in the hamstring," added Klopp, whose side are also still in the hunt for the FA Cup and Champions League.

Defeat leaves Wolves still six points off the top four in seventh, but Nuno Espirito Santo's side showed why they are on form the most likely challengers to fourth-placed Chelsea for a place in next season's Champions League.

"It was a fantastic game of football," said Nuno. "We have to keep going and keep getting stronger."

Nuno's one regret from his side's display was the manner of the opening goal.

Set-pieces have been one of the keys to&nbsp;Liverpool's success and a well-worked corner got the visitors off to a flying start as Henderson headed home.

Matt Doherty should have levelled shortly afterwards before&nbsp;Liverpool's threat on the counter-attack was curtailed when Mane pulled up.

The Senegalese's absence for a few weeks is unlikely to sway the momentum of the title race, but he could now be a doubt for the first leg of&nbsp;Liverpool's Champions League last 16 tie at Atletico Madrid next month.

Jimenez and Adama Traore were left on the bench when the sides met in late December just two days after they had scored in a thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester City and Wolves' two most dangerous attacking weapons made a huge difference.

"Traore is pretty much unplayable," added Klopp.&nbsp;

"Not only on the wing any more, but he keeps the ball, holds the ball and sets up goals."

The Spaniard's pace was too much for a&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;defence that had kept seven consecutive Premier League clean sheets to handle six minutes after the break.

Traore's run down the right pulled Van Dijk out of the centre of the defence and his pinpoint cross found Jimenez to bullet home his 20th goal of the season.

That was the first goal Alisson had conceded in the league for two months and the Brazilian had to be at his best to then turn a Traore drive to safety and stand up bravely to block from Jimenez.

Firmino looked to have missed the chance to claim all three points when he fired into Patricio's legs with just the Portuguese number one to beat.

But he quickly made amends with a thumping finish from Henderson's pass.

Firmino 'worldie' secures another late Liverpool win at Wolves

The video assistant referee (VAR) system was back in the spotlight on Sunday after drawing the ire of both managers in Liverpool's 1-0 Premier League win over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-title-bid-fades-after-stunning-loss-against-wolves-270681">Wolverhampton Wanderers</a>.

Sadio Mane's goal restored Liverpool's 13-point lead over Leicester City at the top of the table but it was only confirmed after a lengthy VAR review to check for a possible handball by Adam Lallana in the build-up.

"We're in December and coming into January. Players standing around that long is not good," Liverpool boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-klopp-says-hectic-christmas-schedule-is-a-crime-270337">Juergen Klopp</a> said. "I'd prefer if referees went to the screen because it's directly next to us and never used, I don't know exactly why.

"If it's a tight offside with a small margin ... then I can understand it, but with the possible handball, I don't understand it.

"It would have gone quicker (by going to the screen), but that's how we do it in England and we cannot change that."

Wolves were then denied an equaliser by VAR, another decision that came after a long delay.

Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who was booked for protesting the disallowed goal, said he was not a fan of VAR decisions being taken miles away from where matches are being played.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">VAR decisions</a> are made at a hub in Stockley Park, south West London.

"I don't like it," he added. "A referee in that situation doesn't feel the game like someone present at the match. It's not for me to say how things can be improved, but I think it's a pity."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-relentless-liverpool-have-no-time-for-reflection-270699">Liverpool</a> next play Sheffield United on Thursday while Wolves visit second-from-bottom Watford a day earlier.

Premier League: Liverpool's Klopp unhappy with VAR delays in win over Wolves

Liverpool boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-liverpool-manager-klopp-extends-contract-to-2024-268150">Jurgen&nbsp;Klopp</a>&nbsp;has described the Premier League's hectic festive schedule as a "crime" against some teams that are forced to play two matches in the space of 48 hours.

The league leaders, who won the Club World Cup title by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-end-sensational-year-as-roberto-firminos-extra-time-goal-seals-club-world-cup-269525">beating Brazil's Flamengo</a> last Saturday, take on second-placed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-face-vardy-threat-on-festive-return-to-domestic-action-270023">Leicester City</a> on Thursday and host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, but other teams including Manchester City are not as fortunate.

The champions visit Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves on Friday before welcoming Sheffield United on Sunday, prompting manager Pep <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-pep-guardiola-looking-forward-to-fifth-season-with-manchester-city-269875">Guardiola</a> to write to the league to "thank" them for a demanding schedule.

"It is absolutely not OK,"&nbsp;Klopp&nbsp;told the British media. "There's no reason why more teams do not get more than 48 hours between Premier League games.

"None of the managers have a problem playing on Boxing Day, but playing on the 26th and 28th is a crime. This year we play 26th and 29th and it's like a holiday."

Liverpool's Klopp says hectic Christmas schedule is a 'crime'

Jurgen Klopp described winning the Club World Cup as "absolutely sensational" after Roberto Firmino's extra-time goal allowed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-set-sights-on-flamengo-as-firmino-takes-reds-into-club-world-cup-final-269087">Liverpool </a>to beat Flamengo 1-0 in the final in Doha on Saturday and lift the trophy for the first time.

Firmino was picked out by Sadio Mane and waited for goalkeeper Diego Alves to commit before slotting low into the net in the 99th minute of an absorbing contest at the Khalifa International Stadium.

It was the moment that finally punctured the hopes of the Brazilian side and their vibrant support, after Liverpool had been denied a penalty by VAR right at the end of normal time.

The Qatari referee initially gave a spot-kick for a foul on Mane by Rafinha on the way into the box, but changed his mind following a lengthy review, forcing the contest into an extra 30 minutes.

Still, the European champions had enough to come out on top, with Firmino repeating his semi-final heroics, when he scored an injury-time winner against Monterrey of Mexico.

"I couldn't be more happy for him that he could score that goal because before the game we spoke a lot about what this competition means to South American people and especially Brazilian people," Klopp said.

"It means the world to him, it helped us and on top of that it was a sensational goal."

The victory completes a fabulous year for Liverpool, with a third piece of silverware to go with the Champions League and UEFA Supercup.

Having earned the title of world champions, if Klopp's team see out their huge lead at the top of the Premier League, they will have a case to be remembered as the finest side in the illustrious history of the club.

"I said before the game that I didn't know how it would feel, but now I can say it's outstanding, absolutely sensational and I'm so proud of the boys," Klopp said after winning a competition that has not always been held in high regard in Europe.

Flamengo take plaudits&nbsp;

"Flamengo are a really, really good football team but I think we were the better team tonight."

Flamengo had been hoping to repeat their win over Liverpool in the old Intercontinental Cup in 1981 and thereby become the first non-European winners of the Club World Cup since fellow Brazilians Corinthians beat Chelsea in 2012.

They fell short, although they certainly gave the Premier League leaders a game in what was their last outing of a long season.

"We lost, but only in terms of the result. Otherwise we were not losers in any respect. We were as good as them," said their Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who took over in June before leading them to the Brazilian title and the Copa Libertadores.

"Flamengo have had an unforgettable season. We have shown that the best Brazilian team can compete on the same level as the best teams in Europe."

Van Dijk back, Firmino hits post&nbsp;

Klopp welcomed back Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman sat out Wednesday's semi-final due to illness, while Firmino, Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold were recalled after starting on the bench against Monterrey.

Firmino, Naby Keita and Alexander-Arnold all came close for Liverpool in the first six minutes, but Flamengo gradually settled into the game and matched the European champions for much of the first half.

However, they were lucky not to fall behind at the beginning of the second period when Firmino controlled Henderson's ball forward and sent a shot off the inside of the post.

Liverpool also needed goalkeeper Alisson to produce a fine stop from a Gabriel Barbosa strike, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went off injured as extra time began to loom.

Then Alves stretched to tip a net-bound Henderson shot from 25 yards over the bar and, with the match in injury time, the English side thought they had a penalty.

However, referee Abdulrahman Al Jassim dramatically cancelled his decision after reviewing the footage on a pitchside monitor.

Liverpool finally found a way through nine minutes into the first half of extra time though thanks to Firmino, and Flamengo could not respond.

Liverpool end sensational year as Roberto Firmino's extra-time goal seals Club World Cup

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-liverpool-manager-klopp-extends-contract-to-2024-268150">Jurgen Klopp</a> is looking forward to a "really tough game" in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-geroginio-wijnaldum-to-miss-club-world-cup-semi-final-268882">Club World Cup</a> final against Flamengo after Roberto Firmino's injury-time goal gave the Anfield side a hard-fought 2-1 win over Monterrey of Mexico on Wednesday.

Firmino came off the bench to turn in a cross from fellow substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 91st minute at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha after Naby Keita's early opener for a weakened Liverpool side had swiftly been cancelled out by Argentine striker Rogelio Funes Mori.

Having taken time out from their seemingly relentless march towards the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-stage-comeback-to-sink-west-ham-and-end-winless-run-267402">Premier League</a> title to travel to Qatar, Liverpool will be relieved at coming through this test, and they remain on course to win this competition for the first time.

However, they must now beat a Flamengo side who have won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian title in the last month under Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, and who will have had an extra day to prepare for the final after defeating Saudi club Al-Hilal 3-1 on Tuesday.

"Tough game, really tough game," said Klopp when asked about the prospect of facing Flamengo in what will be a repeat of the 1981 Intercontinental Cup final, when a Brazilian team captained by Zico beat Bob Paisley's European Cup holders 3-0 in Tokyo.

"Flamengo's season is over, they are here with a full squad, but we just have to recover as quickly as possible and then make ourselves ready."

He will hope to have Virgil van Dijk back fit for the final after the inspirational Dutch centre-back sat out the Monterrey game due to illness, leaving skipper Jordan Henderson to partner Joe Gomez in defence.

"It was an easy decision because he couldn't train yesterday - he was on the pitch for a couple of minutes until the media left, and then unfortunately he had to leave as well," Klopp said about Van Dijk, who has played in every Premier League and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-last-16-fixtures-liverpool-to-clash-with-atletico-madrid-city-to-face-real-madrid-268559">Champions League</a> game this season. "We will see how quick he can recover."

'Only possible the hard way'&nbsp;

In addition, Klopp chose to leave Sadio Mane on the bench at kick-off along with Firmino and Alexander-Arnold, instead of handing starts to the likes of Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi.

"It was only possible the hard way," said Klopp of the way in which his side won, with Firmino's late goal coming after goalkeeper Alisson made a string of key saves to stop Monterrey from going in front.

"We had problems before the game, we knew we would have some problems in the game, but I really think the boys did exceptionally well."

At such a busy stage in the season, Klopp also admitted his relief when the winning goal went in, saying: "I was actually afraid of extra time to be honest so I was more than happy when Bobby scored that goal."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/aston-villa-beat-liverpools-kids-to-reach-league-cup-semis-268863">Liverpool</a> got off to a flying start and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 12th minute.

Salah, spurred on by the backing of adoring fans in an official attendance of over 45,000, produced a stunning pass to release Keita, the midfielder running into the box and lashing a first-time shot past goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero.

However, Monterrey's response was swift, as the CONCACAF Champions League winners drew level within two minutes when Funes Mori -- the brother of former Everton defender Ramiro - converted the rebound after Alisson saved from Jesus Gallardo.

The Mexicans grew in confidence after that, with captain Dorlan Pabon, the Colombian international, testing Alisson before the interval and again from a free-kick after the break.

Alisson also saved well from Funes Mori before Mane, Alexander-Arnold and Firmino all entered the fray in the closing stages.&nbsp;

Clearly determined to avoid a draining extra half-hour, Klopp's game plan paid off as Firmino pounced in the 91st minute.

"The team played really well and gave everything," said Monterrey coach Antonio Mohamed.&nbsp;

"Overall I thought we had the clearest chances and their goalkeeper made four or five big saves. It would have been fairer had the game gone to extra time."&nbsp;

Having taken time out from their seemingly relentless march towards the Premier League title to travel to Qatar, Liverpool will be relieved at coming through this test, and they remain on course to win this competition for the first time. "Flamengo's season is over, they are here with a full squad, but we just have to recover as quickly as possible and then make ourselves ready." He will hope to have Virgil van Dijk back fit for the final after the inspirational Dutch centre-back sat out the Monterrey game due to illness, leaving skipper Jordan Henderson to partner Joe Gomez in defence. "It was an easy decision because he couldn't train yesterday - he was on the pitch for a couple of minutes until the media left, and then unfortunately he had to leave as well," Klopp said about Van Dijk, who has played in every Premier League and Champions League game this season. "We will see how quick he can recover." 'Only possible the hard way' In addition, Klopp chose to leave Sadio Mane on the bench at kick-off along with Firmino and Alexander-Arnold, instead of handing starts to the likes of Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi. "It was only possible the hard way," said Klopp of the way in which his side won, with Firmino's late goal coming after goalkeeper Alisson made a string of key saves to stop Monterrey from going in front. "We had problems before the game, we knew we would have some problems in the game, but I really think the boys did exceptionally well." At such a busy stage in the season, Klopp also admitted his relief when the winning goal went in, saying: "I was actually afraid of extra time to be honest so I was more than happy when Bobby scored that goal." Liverpool got off to a flying start and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 12th minute. Alisson also saved well from Funes Mori before Mane, Alexander-Arnold and Firmino all entered the fray in the closing stages. Clearly determined to avoid a draining extra half-hour, Klopp's game plan paid off as Firmino pounced in the 91st minute. "The team played really well and gave everything," said Monterrey coach Antonio Mohamed. "Overall I thought we had the clearest chances and their goalkeeper made four or five big saves. It would have been fairer had the game gone to extra time."

Manchester City manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-not-on-par-with-european-elite-says-guardiola-267118">Pep Guardiola </a>has denied reports that his contract contains a 'break clause' that could allow him to leave at the end of the season.

The Spaniard signed an extension last year until 2021 but with City's hopes of a third successive Premier League title now looking remote, questions have been raised about his future.

Asked on Friday (December 13) whether he could be released from his contract at the end of the season, Guardiola said: "No it's not true. I already spoke about that, about my intentions with the club."

Guardiola arrived at Manchester City in 2016 and after a trophy-less first season he has delivered two league titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup to the Etihad Stadium.

This season, however, his star has waned with Liverpool's Juergen Klopp taking centre stage with his side eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and 14 ahead of City who have slipped below Leicester City into third place.

Klopp agreed a contract extension until 2024 on Friday.

"I congratulate him and Liverpool, he deserves it," Guardiola told reporters at his news conference ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Arsenal. "I think it's really good for the Premier League he can continue here."

Guardiola's immediate priority will be to get his side back on track against Arsenal, having suffered defeat in last weekend's Manchester derby.

Arsenal, under caretaker boss Freddie Ljungberg, ended a nine-match winless sequence by beating West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday and drew 2-2 with Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday.

"We watched the games with (former manager) Unai (Emery) and the games with Ljungberg and try to figure out what they will do against us," Guardiola said.

The final round of group stage matches in the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-and-napoli-left-with-work-to-do-after-anfield-draw-264987"> UEFA Champions League</a> gets underway today. Eight teams are already through to the knockouts, the eight others who will join them will be decided over the next two days.

Holders Liverpool is in a small group of heavyweights in danger of missing out as they travel to Austria to take on free-scoring Salzburg.

Jurgen Klopp's side would have sealed qualification with a game to spare if they had beaten Italian club Napoli two weeks ago but they were instead held to a 1-1 draw that leaves them needing at least one more point to guarantee progress.

Liverpool is unlikely to have it easy against Salzburg who gave them a mighty scare in a 4-3 defeat at Anfield earlier in the group stage.

Ahead of the match, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said: "Two weeks ago Salzburg were very happy that they won against Genk and we played a draw against Napoli so they thought now they have the final against us, adding, "Napoli was really happy that night because they got a point at Anfield and thought they only have to play Genk next week in a home game. So two weeks later everybody knows it's a final, so we knew it since two weeks and we are prepared."&nbsp;

Salzburg is currently third in the group but have the chance to enter the knockouts if they can become only the second team to beat Liverpool across competitions this season.

Liverpool is a point clear with second-placed Napoli favourites to join them in the knockouts.

The Italians managed by Carlo Ancelotti have not won any of their last nine matches though and that gives the Belgians hope of pulling off an upset.

Napoli needs at least a draw to guarantee qualification as well but will miss out if they lose, and Salzburg upset Liverpool.

It's all to play for in Group H with three teams - including last season's semi-finalists Ajax and Chelsea in with a chance of progressing.

Frank <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Lampard's Chelsea</a> know&nbsp;that only maximum points against the French side Lille at Stamford Bridge will guarantee them a spot in the round of 16.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea head coach said: "I think it would be a good achievement. I mean, I know there are expectations that we should get through a group, I get that."

"But it was a tough group and the slightly young feel to our team, you know, the fact we lost the first game, there are a few difficulties that we've had," he added.

"And I think we've dealt with them very well to get ourselves in this position. But there's still work to be done. So, yeah, we have to win, go out to win the game." &nbsp;&nbsp;

Group leaders Ajax require at least a draw against Valencia&nbsp;but if the Spaniards were to claim an unlikely win in Amsterdam, then they will be through to the last-16.

A draw will also be enough for the Spanish outfit, but only if Chelsea drop points.

Both have been inducted into the hall of fame, in recognition of their achievements in football management to date.

Guardiola and Klopp were honoured at a special LMA Dinner on Thursday (local time).

England coach and LMA President, Gareth Southgate, and LMA Board and Hall of Fame Member, Sir Alex Ferguson, presented Klopp and Guardiola with a hand-crafted silver salver as a mark of recognition.

The duo now follows the likes of Brian Clough, Sir Bobby Robson and Arsene Wenger in the LMA Hall of Fame.

"What a privilege. When you come down the corridor and see all the big names, big managers, big personalities being here that would have helped to make football better, football that we have right now," Goal.com quoted Guardiola as saying.

"I think all the managers here that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame is because we were in incredible clubs with incredible players," he added.

Both Liverpool and Manchester City have been battling it out to win the Premier League this season.

Currently, Liverpool is on the top position in the standings and have a nine-point lead over the defending champions City.

"It is big, it is really big. When I first heard about it I couldn't believe it. I have now been in England for a bit longer than four years and I have enjoyed each second, to be honest," Klopp said.

"I saw all the names with the pictures when I came in, it's really impressive. I don't often feel pride but, at this moment, I'm very proud because this is something really, really special," he added.

Liverpool will next take on Brighton in the Premier League while City will clash against Newcastle United.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he has no concerns about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-liverpools-salah-out-of-egypt-games-with-ankle-problem-261793">Mohamed Salah's fitness </a>ahead of their Champions League clash with Napoli.

Salah was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday after missing training with an ankle problem.

"Mo Salah looks really good," Klopp said at his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mane-the-main-man-as-liverpool-close-on-champions-league-knockouts-264551">pre-match press conference </a>on Tuesday. "I'm not worried about it."

Klopp also provided an update on the fitness of defender Joel Matip, who has been sidelined with a knee injury.

"Joel is improving but is some time away. There will be a scan this week and then we will see how it is."

Klopp said he had plans to cope with Liverpool's fixture pile-up over the next few weeks.

Their involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar, plus their progress in the League Cup, mean Liverpool have been forced to play two games within 24 hours of each other, over 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometres) apart in mid-December.

"We have plans for everything, as you can imagine, and we change them constantly. I have two smartphones and when one of them is ringing it is really rare it is good news," said Klopp.

"You only get the messages when a player is not fine, so then we have to make new plans and we don't know exactly how many players we'll have to train.&nbsp;

"We know in the long term what we have to do, we know that's all set. The athletic part of the sessions, we try to adapt to the specific situation of the players. The tactical things depend on the games we play."

Victory over Carlo Ancelotti's side on Wednesday would ensure defending champions Liverpool finish top of Group E with a game to spare but Klopp said he could not afford to look past the match.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-begins-their-champions-league-title-defence-with-2-0-defeat-to-napoli-250290">Napoli </a>are the only side to have beaten Liverpool this season but are currently seventh in Serie A.

"The biggest mistake we could make is that we have won it already and what would happen if we win it," Klopp said.

"These things are not in our mind. Of course we try to win the game, it would be massive for us after the start we had. Napoli are a dangerous opponent.

"There are two weeks between tomorrow night and the Salzburg game (final match of the group) and we have three games in between. Why should I think about the Salzburg game now?"

UEFA Champions League: Jurgen Klopp confident of Mohamed Salah fitness ahead of clash against Napoli

The Scotland captain posted a short video clip on Twitter of himself smiling wryly with the caption "Realising you have more assists than @trentaa98" to which his teammate responded, "Come back in May."

The healthy rivalry between the Merseyside club's marauding&nbsp;full-backs&nbsp;has seen them create chances on par with some of the best forwards in the world, adding venom to&nbsp;Liverpool's&nbsp;already potent attack as they chase a first league title in 30 years.

"Me and Trent had big numbers last season in terms of contributing to goals and stuff, but it was more than that,"&nbsp;Robertson, 25, told&nbsp;Liverpool's&nbsp;website.

"Defensively we were also very good and this season we've tried to do the same. We just try and produce&nbsp;high&nbsp;standards&nbsp;in every single game ...&nbsp;it's not always possible."

Robertson&nbsp;and England's Alexander-Arnold have combined for 30 league assists,15 each, since August 2018 when Liverpool began to hit top gear under manager Juergen Klopp.

In the 12 games, the pair have started this season, Liverpool have conceded 10 goals with only second-placed Leicester City (eight) and Sheffield United (nine) letting in fewer.

Robertson&nbsp;hailed the remarkable progress of Liverpool-born<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../football-liverpools-alexander-arnold-eyes- captains-armband-259179"> Alexander-Arnold</a>, who is not far behind him with three assists this season.

"Trent is 21 and he's producing performances unbelievably and hopefully he keeps that up,"&nbsp;Robertson&nbsp;said.

"Hopefully the team keeps it up because we're doing well so far and there's confidence in that changing room."

More praise came from former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.

"Some of Trent's passing is as good as a midfielder's. I've played with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso and I'd put him right up there," Crouch told the BBC in his role as an analyst.

Football: High standards helping Liverpool's full backs fire, says Robertson

European champions Liverpool moved a step closer to qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage with a laboured 2-1 win over Belgium's Genk at Anfield on Tuesday.

Liverpool, who fielded a weakened side ahead of Sunday's top-of-the-table <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-and-city-grab-late-wins-manchester-united-lose-259581">Premier League clash</a> with Manchester City, top Group E with nine points after Napoli, who have eight, and Salzburg, on four, drew 1-1 in Italy.

Liverpool took an early lead through Georginio Wijnaldum before Ally Mbwana Samata levelled in the 41st but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got the winner eight minutes into the second half.

"Every game is tough in the Champions League. It's a boring saying but it's true. We need to finish the job now. We are in a good position," said left-back James Milner.

Napoli visit Anfield on November&nbsp;27 with Liverpool hoping to guarantee qualification for the last 16 before their final group game at Salzburg on December&nbsp;10.

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-klopp-refuses-to-be-distracted-by-manchester-city-as-liverpool-welcome-genk-260004">Juergen Klopp</a> named forwards Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane as substitutes, giving a start to Belgian striker Divock Origi against the club where he began his career as a youth player.

The home side took the lead in the 14th minute with a close-range effort from Wijnaldum after James Milner's low cross from the left bounced off Sebastien Dewaest and fell to the Dutchman who scooped home.

Klopp's side had several chances to extend their lead but lacked the killer touch in front of goal with Mohamed Salah below his usual level of sharpness, wasting a good chance by blasting wide after another slip-up from Dewaest.

However, against the run of play, Liverpool were pegged back four minutes before the break, when Tanzanian striker Samatta met Bryan Heynen's corner with a superbly-angled near-post header.

Again, Liverpool were on top after the interval, with Origi missing a good chance and Virgil van Dijk flashing a header just wide.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, playing in a less familiar advanced role, restored the hosts' advantage in the 53rd, collecting a neat pass from Salah on the edge of the box and beating Genk keeper Gaetan Coucke with a low drive on the turn.

Liverpool were comfortably in control from then on but keeper Alisson Becker had to be alert nine minutes from the end to push out a dangerous shot from the impressive Heynen.

Genk, who remain without a win in the group stage and are bottom with one point, can take some heart from a performance which caused Klopp's side plenty of frustration at an unusually quiet Anfield.

"With a bit of luck, it could even have become 2-2," said Genk defender Casper De Norre. "Conceding only two goals at Anfield is not too bad. You know you're put under pressure, that is something you can never avoid here."

European champions Liverpool moved a step closer to qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage with a laboured 2-1 win over Belgium's Genk at Anfield on Tuesday. Liverpool, who fielded a weakened side ahead of Sunday's top-of-the-table Premier League clash with Manchester City, top Group E with nine points after Napoli, who have eight, and Salzburg, on four, drew 1-1 in Italy. Napoli visit Anfield on November 27 with Liverpool hoping to guarantee qualification for the last 16 before their final group game at Salzburg on December 10. Champions League: Oxlade-Chamberlain strike gives Liverpool win over Genk

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the emotional high of his side's Champions League triumph inspired him to join the Common Goal charity.

Klopp will join a host of star names from the world of football, including Manchester United's Juan Mata and FIFA women's player of the year Megan Rapinoe, by donating one percent of his salary to aid the work of charities across the world.

The 52-year-old, who was crowned FIFA men's coach of the year on Monday, told the Players Tribune of difficult times he suffered early in his career as an amateur footballer, working in a warehouse while trying to support his young family.

And while he now faces the pressure of trying to deliver Liverpool's first Premier League title in 30 years, Klopp insisted he and his players have the luxury of no longer living in the 'real world'.

"We should not forget what it was like when we had&nbsp;real&nbsp;problems," said Klopp.

"This bubble we live in is not the real world. I am sorry, but anything that happens on a football pitch is not a real problem. There should be a bigger purpose to this game than revenue and trophies, no?

"Just think what we could accomplish if we all came together and gave one percent of what we earn to make a positive difference in the world. Maybe I am naive. Maybe I am a crazy old dreamer.&nbsp;

"But who is this game for?&nbsp;We all know damn well that this game is for dreamers."

After a stunning comeback from losing the first leg of their Champions League semi-final 3-0 to Barcelona to beat the Spanish champions 4-0 at Anfield in May, Liverpool lifted their sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

On their return to Liverpool, an open-top bus parade took the team passed hundreds of thousands of celebrating fans on the city's streets.

"If you could’ve put all the emotions, all the excitement, all the love in the air that day and bottled it up, the world would be a better place," added Klopp.

"I have not been able to get the emotion of that day out of my head. Football has given me everything in my life. But I really want to do more to give back to the world."

'Crazy old dreamer' Klopp inspired to make charity pledge

Jurgen Klopp says&nbsp;Liverpool have not changed their defensive approach despite their record of only one clean sheet in their eight games so far this season.

The European champions are five points clear at the top of the Premier League after five straight wins but the backline has been breached in four of those matches.

And two late goals conceded in Naples in midweek meant their Champions League campaign started in disappointing fashion.

Klopp's men started last season's league campaign with three clean sheets and conceded just 22 Premier League goals all season, missing out on their first top-flight title since 1990 by a single point.

But Klopp said at his pre-Chelsea press conference on Friday that the change was down to circumstances rather than system.

"No, there is no difference," he said at Liverpool's training ground. "We didn't focus more on offensive things and forget the defensive things.

"The goals happened completely strangely. There would have been a second clean sheet against Southampton if we don't concede that goal, there could have been different clean sheets in other games.

"Of course it's not exactly what we wanted but we don't collect clean sheets. We want to win football games and we are still early in the season."

Klopp, whose side travel to Frank Lampard's Chelsea on Sunday, was asked about the importance of Virgil van Dijk and whether he had concerns about any potential injuries ruling the Dutchman out for a period of time.

"That's the reason why we have four centre-halves," he said.

"It's not easy for the 'in the moment number four', not playing and sometimes not involved in the squad, but in the moment if something happens, like it was last year, not only one thing happens, a couple of things happen and then you end up with one centre-half and a defensive midfielder, which we did against Bayern."

"We all need luck to be really successful, injury-wise first and foremost," he added.&nbsp;

"I can imagine something like that is not easy but the other guys, I have said it a lot of times, from my point of view we have four world-class centre-halves. They can play together in each partnership and hopefully that will be enough for a season, to be honest."

Jurgen Klopp unfazed by Liverpool's defensive lapses

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool that retaining the Champions League will be even harder than their incredible march to victory in Madrid last season.

Klopp's side start their bid to win a seventh European Cup with a trip to Napoli for their Group E opener on Tuesday.

The Reds have reached the last two Champions League finals, beating Tottenham in the Spanish capital in June after losing to Real Madrid 12 months earlier.

But Klopp believes Liverpool face a daunting task to make it to the final in Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium -- a venue which carries extra resonance for the club after they won the 2005 Champions League with an astonishing comeback against AC Milan in the same stadium.

Before Liverpool can dream of emulating Steven Gerrard and company's triumph by the banks of the Bosphorus, Klopp knows they will have to run the gauntlet in what he expects to be a fiercely contested tournament.

Napoli are expected to pose the sternest test to Liverpool in a group which also includes unfancied Salzburg and Genk.

Carlo Ancelotti's team came within a whisker of ending Liverpool's European campaign in the group stage last season when Alisson Becker's superb late save denied Arkadiusz Milik to preserve a 1-0 win at Anfield that sent the Reds into the last 16 at the expense of Napoli.

Even if Liverpool should advance to the knockout rounds without so much drama this season, Klopp is wary of the restocked superpowers certain to be lying in wait in the latter stages.

"I will have no problem with it (reaching the final) if it happens again, but at this moment I am not too sure it will," he said when the draw was made in August.

"We have the same chance like everyone else, but that is all, and I don't see us, the English teams, dominating. I really think a lot of teams have a good chance.

"Look at the squad Borussia Dortmund has and tell me we are stronger than them. That is incredible. They can make five changes and you think: 'Really, they didn't play last week? Why?' There are a lot of quality teams.

"Juventus will be there, PSG will be there. Real Madrid? Do you think they gave up already? Bayern Munich now finally brought in Perisic and Coutinho which is a big boost."

'Like a rock'

While Liverpool will always have a special relationship with the Champions League after the club's dominance of the competition in the 1970s and 1980s, it is not hard to believe that some die-hard Kopites would happily exchange their continental supremacy for a season of domestic bliss.

Having erased the pain of that 2018 final defeat against Real, Liverpool's main goal this term is to end the club's long wait to win the English title.

Pipped to the Premier League trophy by Manchester City on the final day of last season, Liverpool are desperate to win the title for the first time since 1990.

That desire has been clear to see in a blistering five-game winning streak which has already taken them to the top of the table this season.

Even an injury to Alisson has failed to interrupt their flow and the Brazilian keeper's replacement Adrian admits Liverpool's rock-solid defence -- marshalled by the imperious Virgil van Dijk -- has made his life much easier as the former West Ham player adapts to his new club.

"It's easy to play with them; you have some of the best players in the world, the best defenders, midfielders and attackers. From the back, I need to help on the occasions when I have to," Adrian said.

"I'm really proud to have won the last few games. We are in a good moment, we are like a rock – all together, the manager, the staff, players and fans. The club is living a great moment."

Jurgen Klopp expects daunting ride as Liverpool eye Istanbul return

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be out until after the next international break in mid-October but midfielder Naby Keita should return to training with the first team next week, manager Jurgen Klopp said on Friday.

Brazilian Alisson injured his calf in Liverpool's Premier League opener against Norwich City last month and the European champions have kept only one clean sheet in all competitions in his absence so far.

Keita, who suffered a groin injury last month, has missed Liverpool's last three matches.

"Alisson looks good and he is improving, but we cannot put any pressure on it," Klopp told reporters ahead of Saturday's home game against Newcastle United. "It was a really serious injury in the calf.

"It is now much better and that's good for us and good for him, but we don't know exactly (how long it will take). The target was always after the next international break.

"Naby is close. He could be in training when we come back from (Liverpool's Champions League group stage match against) Napoli next week."

Newcastle are 14th in the table under new manager Steve Bruce but Klopp is not taking them lightly after they beat Tottenham Hotspur away last month.

"They are very difficult to play against," the German said. "The style is similar to last season. They defend with a big heart. It won't be easy.

"I'm really impressed by the things they have done so far. Newcastle had something like 20% possession against Tottenham but they deserved the three points. They will fight like crazy."

Liverpool are seeking their fifth victory of the season and a club record-extending 14th straight top flight win. Klopp's side are also unbeaten at Anfield in their last 40 league matches.

"It was clear we had to change things," he said. "We had to make Anfield a fortress again. We created a proper basis together, it became more difficult for teams to get something."

Van Dijk, Ronaldo and Messi shortlisted for FIFA award

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his side's intensity as they took control at the top of the Premier League with their third consecutive win of the campaign in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Arsenal.

After wins over Norwich City and Southampton, the European champions, who were league runners-up last term, needed to step up their game for the visit of Unai Emery's Gunners who were also unbeaten -- and that is exactly what they did.

"It was a brilliant game from my side so early in the season. It was outstanding. It was a performance full of power, energy, greed and passion, which I think you need to have against a team like Arsenal," said Klopp.

"We are still really early in the season and throwing such energy on the pitch is exceptional. The work rate of the whole team was exceptional. Tactical discipline was exceptional apart from maybe 10-15 minutes," he said.

Although Liverpool eased off in the latter stages and allowed Arsenal to score a consolation goal, Klopp was still well satisfied with what he witnessed.

"For 80 minutes we were completely in charge of the game. We are not Disneyland, we do not need to excite everyone in every second," said the German.

Mohamed Salah was the decisive figure -- turning David Luiz to gain a penalty which he blasted home in the 49th minute and then beating Arsenal's former Chelsea defender out wide before scoring an outstanding solo goal.

“The decision about the penalty I think was absolutely obvious. Mo’s third goal was absolutely amazing, but the pedigree of the boys is sensational. Our identity is intensity, and we showed that today," said Klopp, who also had praise for his two Brazilians on the field.

"Roberto Firmino what a player he is, unbelievable. I am really happy with the performance. I did not see a bad player tonight or a player that played under his level. Fabinho played sensational," he said.

Liverpool have a five-point advantage over champions Manchester City, who pipped them to the title by a solitary point last season.

City play their third match of the league campaign at Bournemouth on Sunday.

'Energy on pitch is exceptional': Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praises team

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp laughed off stand-in goalkeeper Adrian's mistake in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton, joking that the howler was a "goalie thing" at the Merseyside club.

After forwards Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, new signing Adrian gifted Southampton a lifeline with a poor clearance that rebounded off Danny Ings and into the net.

But Klopp made light of the incident, comparing it to an error by his first-choice goalkeeper Alisson during a win over Leicester City last season.

Asked by reporters if he had spoken to Adrian, Klopp said: "Yes: 'you finally arrived, welcome.'

"Ali did the same... it's a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good."

Adrian, who was deployed after Allisson suffered a long-term injury against Norwich, had been passed fit for the match after sustaining a freak injury while celebrating their midweek Super Cup victory over Chelsea.

"Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did, all the saves, all that stuff," Klopp added.

"The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the painkillers still help.

"I don't think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He's completely good with his feet."

Early pace-setters Liverpool next host Arsenal on Aug. 24.

Liverpool's Klopp makes light of Adrian howler

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was on Monday ruled out for "the next few weeks" by coach Jurgen Klopp after suffering a calf injury in their 4-1 win over Norwich.

Brazil international Alisson limped off in the first half of Liverpool's Premier League opener at Anfield on Friday.

"Not too cool. It's a calf injury which takes him obviously out for a while," Klopp told Liverpool's website.

"I don't want to make now an exact prognosis on when he will be back but it will not be Wednesday for sure, so now then we have to see. It takes a while, it takes a couple weeks for sure, and we have to see.&nbsp;

"I saw already like 'six weeks' and stuff like this, but Ali was not a lot injured in his career so I would like to wait a little bit to see how he develops in that process now, but he is not in for the next few weeks."

Alisson, 26, was replaced by experienced Spaniard Adrian against Norwich. The former West Ham keeper, who joined on a free transfer last week, is likely to keep his place for Liverpool's European Super Cup date with Chelsea in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Third-choice Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is not fully fit after a broken wrist, so the club are set to sign 35-year-old former Middlesbrough player Andy Lonergan on a free transfer.

Lonergan was part of Liverpool's pre-season tour as cover for their other keepers.

Asked if Lonergan will be on the bench on Wednesday, Klopp said: "I think so. I didn't speak to (goalkeeping coach) John Achterberg yet about that. We spoke a lot about the goalie situation apart from what we have to do on Wednesday!

"We will see, but we can have obviously a lot of players on the bench there, which is good and I think Andy will be one of them.

"He was in with us, he's a brilliant character, a really nice lad and helped us a lot in the pre-season, and now we decided to work together with him."

Alisson's loss for an extended period would be a big blow to the club he joined from Roma last year.

But Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, speaking after the Norwich game, insisted Adrian will prove a quality deputy for Alisson.

"His experience is the main thing, he knows what he is doing. He's played a load of games, so he knows what it is about," Alexander-Arnold said.

"Obviously when a keeper has to come off, it's never too promising, so, yes, I think everyone needs to get their head around the fact that he probably will be our keeper for the next few weeks and if so, then we have to live with that, embrace that and I'm sure he will learn from us.&nbsp;

"We will be able to make good connections with him and I think a lot of the lads have made bonds with him already because he's such a good lad off the pitch."

Jurgen Klopp, Mohamed Salah head nominations for FIFA Best awards

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was encouraged by the performance of the European champions on Saturday despite their defeat by his former side Borussia Dortmund who are further ahead in pre-season preparations.

Goals from Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster were cancelled out by Dortmund's Paco Alcacer, Thomas Delaney and Jacob Bruun Larsen as Liverpool were beaten 3-2 in stifling conditions at the Notre Dame stadium in Indiana.

"I don't like what I see in a game in pre-season very often but there is always a reason for it. I'm not over the moon with our performance but I know there is lots to come," Klopp told a news conference.

The defeat comes on the back of a 6-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers and a 3-1 win over Bradford City but Klopp said he had "learned nothing" from the latest result with several senior players getting their first taste of pre-season action.

Liverpool were also without their first-choice attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino who are yet to return following national duty.

"You could see that Dortmund are a step further in their preparations but there was a lot of good things for us," the German added.

"How we conceded goals was a lack of organisation, but it is difficult to have that at this stage... I learned nothing... it was a tough night for both teams, it was really warm."

Liverpool finished second behind Manchester City in the Premier League last season but went on to win the Champions League by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Klopp's side kick off the new league campaign with a home match against promoted Norwich City on Aug. 9.

Jurgen Klopp takes positives from Liverpool's pre-season loss to Dortmund

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Jurgen+Klopp">Jurgen Klopp</a> said Thursday he expects to remain at Anfield for at least three more years as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-manchester-city-to-kick-off-premier-league-season-at-west-ham-226813">Premier League</a> giants prepare to kick off their pre-season tour to North America.

Klopp, who successfully guided Liverpool to a sixth Champions League crown last month, was taken aback when asked to comment on reports suggesting he may leave the club when his current contract expires in 2022.

"Wow! I don't think a lot of people get asked that question three years before the contract is expiring," Klopp said.

"We will see. Why should we think about this? At least three years - that's the answer. At least three years."

Media reported last month that Klopp was pondering a sabbatical when his Liverpool contract ends. Agent Mark Kosicke meanwhile has hinted that Klopp may be interested in taking over as coach of the German national team.

Klopp however was solely focused on preparations for the coming season on Thursday as the Reds begin a three-game US tour that starts on Friday against Borussia Dortmund in South Bend, Indiana.

"I'm excited about having the first proper test," said Klopp, who added that he is not overly concerned by results during the tour.

"So far, so good but there is a lot of work to do," said Klopp. "We played at a specific level last year which should be the basis for what we expect from ourselves for next season.

"It's not about results, it’s about performance and there is still space for improvement and that's what we are working on. We know that."

Liverpool's preparations have been disrupted by the international football calendar.

Goalkeeper Alisson and forward Roberto Firmino will only join the squad later in the pre-season following their Copa America campaign with Brazil, while striker Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are also absent due to African Cup of Nations commitments with Egypt and Senegal.

"It's a slightly different situation to last year; players coming back late, we had a shorter holiday than pretty much all the other teams because the Champions League final was three weeks after the season ended," he said.

"So that's the situation but we knew that, we planned that. It still makes it a bit more difficult than in other pre-seasons maybe, but that’s all.

Klopp meanwhile said Liverpool were girding themselves for another daunting title chase with Manchester City, who pipped them to the Premier League crown on the final day of the season.

However Klopp said he expected other teams to improve.

"It would be great if we could be around Man City again because that’s the only possibility to have to pass them because it is already clear they are the big favourite again," Klopp said.

"All the teams will start again: there is no duel with City and Liverpool and all the rest are watching us. That's not how the Premier League is, all of these games are so difficult to play.

"What we did last year, we were really rock solid in all; we were difficult to play, difficult to outplay, in general we always created chances, we were strong in a lot of departments, didn’t get nervous in difficult situations in a game, could increase pressure in different situations on the other teams."
