A majority, or 63 per cent of Americans, surveyed in a new poll say US President Joe Biden does not have the mental sharpness to serve effectively in second term while 54 per cent say Donald Trump is sufficiently sharp mentally.&nbsp;

This is a new low for Biden as earlier in 2020, 43 per cent believed Biden does not have the mental capability to be a president. A year ago, it was 54 per cent who believed the same.

This came in a random nationwide survey of 1,006 US adults for the Washington Post-ABC News poll from April 28 to May 3. It shows how US President Joe Biden faces significant obstacles as his reelection campaign gets underway.

As many as 62 per cent of Americans say&nbsp;the 80-years-old Biden is not in good enough physical health to be effective as a president.&nbsp;In contrast, 64 per cent of Americans say former US president Donald Trump is physically fit enough to serve. It is pertinent to note that Trump would turn 78 in January 2025 at the time of the next inauguration.

Biden's overall ratings is currently at 36%, down from 42% in February and almost equal to the previous low of 37% in an early 2022 Post-ABC survey. 56 per cent of people disapprove of him, including 47 per cent who do so "strongly."&nbsp;

Biden does not have mental sharpness to serve as president in second term: 63% Americans in poll

Condemning the “senseless” Texas mall shooting where eight people lost their lives, US President Joe Biden on Sunday renewed his call to Congress to ban the sale and purchase of semi-automatic rifles—like the one used in the weekend shootout.

"Once again I ask Congress to send me a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Enacting universal background checks. Requiring safe storage," Biden said in a statement.

He added, "We need nothing less to keep our streets safe."

Biden also ordered US flags flown at half-staff at federal buildings, military posts and American embassies until sunset, May 11, “as a mark of respect for the victims.”

Saturday's shooting is one of the latest in the “gun-friendly” US, which has recorded at least 198 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. This is the most at this point in a year since at least 2016.

Among the US states, Texas has a more liberal policy in terms of owning guns, as most adults aged 21 or over are allowed to carry a handgun without a licence unless they have a previous conviction.

Moreover, there are few restrictions on the possession of rifles and shotguns. Republicans, who control the Texas state legislature, have often opposed stricter gun control measures as they enjoy strong backing from the gun lobby.

The latest episode took place in Texas’ Allen Premium Outlets mall north of Dallas, in which eight people were killed and at least eight wounded, three of whom are critically ill.

The victims' ages range from 5 to 51, according to a hospital spokesperson.

A police officer on an unrelated call killed the gunman after hearing shots.

A police officer at the mall "heard gunshots, went to the gunshots, engaged the suspect and neutralised the suspect," Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey said.

According to witnesses, the gunman was dressed in black and wore combat gear. Police found an AR-15-style rifle lying near his body.

US President Joe Biden renews call to ban assault guns after ‘senseless’ Texas mall shooting

A Ukrainian refugee family that escaped the war in their home country and fled to the United States has received the miracle they were hoping for their toddler, the 'gift of sound'.

In a heartwarming story of hope, a young Ukrainian war refugee named Zlata has been given the gift of sound by a team of dedicated doctors in South Carolina. Zlata, who was born deaf, received a cochlear implant that has allowed her to hear for the first time in her life.&nbsp;

Parents Diana Kuzmina and her husband Olech Kuzmin as per CBS were for months haunted by the fear that their young daughter, two-year-old Zlata Kuzmina, was completely deaf and would forever be denied the sense many of us take for granted.

Thanks to a "very nice" doctor, the toddler can now hear.

The family travelled from their home in Odesa, Ukraine, to the United States. The trip, which took nearly two months, had them stay in Moldova, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, before finally settling in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.&nbsp;

Once in the US, the father Oleh Kuzmin landed a job at a nearby BMW plant, and as per his wife Diana Kuzmina, the miracle happened because "a lot of people prayed for us and God sent us a very good team and a very nice doctor."

CBS identifies the "very nice doctor" as Dr Teddy McRackan, a surgeon and cochlear implant specialist.&nbsp;

Upon running a spate of diagnostics, McRackan and his team at the Medical University of South Carolina found that the two-year-old girl was deaf in her left ear, but that "she was responding at very, very loud levels to noise in that right ear."

In a procedure done at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital, a cochlear implant was placed in Zlata's ear. But there was still no guarantee that the little Ukrainian refugee would be able to hear.

After a month of waiting for the surgical incision to heal, in April, the implant was turned on and they found that the procedure was a success. Although Zlata's deafness is not completely cured, the device attached to her head, and the implant enables her to hear.

Russian mercenary Wagner Group's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday threatened to pull his frontline troops out of Bakhmut. In a series of scathing videos, the Wagner chief blamed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov for "tens of thousands" of killed and wounded Russian fighters in Ukraine. Ahead of an expected Ukrainian offensive, Prigozhin's extraordinary attack on military chiefs, as per AFP, has exposed a deep rift in Russian ranks.

Vowing to hold the generals to account for their failure to provide his fighters with sufficient ammunition, the paramilitary leader said: "For the tens of thousands killed and wounded, they will bear responsibility in front of their mothers and children, I will achieve that."

"Their unprofessionalism is destroying tens of thousands of Russian guys and that is unforgivable," he added.

Here's all you need to know about Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his anger at Russian generals.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Yevgeny Prigozhin?</h2>

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch and a confidant of President Vladimir Putin, who is often called "Putin's chef."&nbsp;

His nickname stems from the fact that he owns restaurants and catering companies that provide services for the Kremlin.

The Wagner chief started his career as a petty criminal and even spent a decade behind bars for crime. Released from jail in 1990, he started selling hotdogs and before long owned a chain of supermarkets, before opening a restaurant called the Old Customs House which became&nbsp;one of Putin's favourite haunts.

<h2>Prigozhin and Putin</h2>

As per the Guardian, the Wagner chief and the Russian President met back when Putin was deputy mayor of St Petersburg, serving under the-then mayor, Anatoly Sobchak.

Putin was reportedly a frequent patron of&nbsp;Prigozhin's restaurant, Old Customs House, on St Petersburg's Vasilievsky Island; even after ascending to the post of Russian President, he would often take his guests to the restaurant, which by then had been turned into a floating restaurant.&nbsp;

He would soon go on to win contracts and cater for major government events through Concord, a holding company he had set up back in the 1990s. Next, he would win giant government supply contracts worth billions of roubles to provide food to Moscow’s schools and eventually the army.

In 2014, he founded Wagner to support Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

As Prigozhin describes it: "I cleaned the old weapons myself, sorted out the bulletproof vests myself and found specialists who could help me with this. From that moment, on 1 May 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later came to be called the Wagner Battalion."&nbsp;

"I am proud that I was able to defend their right to protect the interests of their country," he added in the September 2022 statement, posted by his catering company, Concord.

<h2>The Wagner Group</h2>

Prigozhin controls a network of influential companies and is the founder of the Russian state-backed mercenary company Wagner Group.&nbsp;

The group, as per the Business Insider report, has played a significant role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and was reportedly deployed to assassinate Ukrainian leaders. As per Russian media outlet Mediazona, the Wagner group has also been recruiting prisoners for frontline combat.

Wagner Group's&nbsp;ranks according to Western intelligence estimates have ballooned to about 50,000. This includes tens of thousands of ex-prisoners recruited from jails around Russia, often personally by Prigozhin.

The group has been accused of committing human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mozambique.

As per a report by Polygraph, Prigozhin also controls three companies that have been accused of interference in the 2016 and 2018 US elections. For the alleged influencing of elections, Prigozhin, along with six other individuals was even (re) designated under the Specially Designated Nationals And Blocked Persons List (SDN).

<h2>Prigozhin’s anger at&nbsp;Russian generals</h2>

The Wagner chief in a series of scathing videos has threatened to pull out his&nbsp;troops from Bakhmut.

"I will pull out Wagner units from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are facing a senseless death," said Prigozhin in a recently released video statement. He added that he was now expecting a plan from the military on how to implement the withdrawal.

As per AFP, while Prigozhin has made similar threats to pull out in the past, the emotive language and the scathing personal criticism of the leaders of Russia's campaign in Ukraine were unprecedented.

The Wagner chief claims that Russian generals are "withholding" ammunition urgently needed by his men. In February of this year, he had even termed the withholding of munition supplies as "treason".

Previously, in December 2022, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of cutting him off completely and said that he has been unable to get through to anyone at the Kremlin.

On his Telegram channel, he said, "To get me to stop asking for ammunition, all the hotlines to offices, to departments etc., have been cut off from me. But the real humdinger is that they’ve also blocked agencies from making decisions [related to Wagner]."

King Charles's coronation is set to take place in a few hours from now. Every event of the British royal family is watched and followed with great interest the world over. This ceremony is no different even though it has been heavily downsized to about 2000 guests compared to the 8000s guests who attended Queen Elizabeth's coronation ceremony in 1953.

Royal events are typically attended by not just members of the royal family but by prominent celebrities and world leaders from the world over. Here's a look at everyone who is expected to not attend King Charles's coronation.

Meghan Markle

Prince Harry, Charles' younger son, will be attending his father's coronation ceremony minus his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Archie and Lilibet. Markle will remain in California. The move comes months after Meghan and Harry's Netflix documentary was released where the two spoke candidly about their strained relationship with the royal family. "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th," the palace said in a statement a few weeks earlier.&nbsp;

Joe Biden

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden will not be attending the coronation. However, his wife, First Lady Jill Biden will be there. During a phone call with King Charles, President Biden congratulated the King on his coronation and said that he hopes to meet with him in the United Kingdom in the future, according to a White House readout of the call. Interestingly, no sitting President of the US has ever attended a coronation ceremony in Britain.&nbsp;

Sarah Ferguson

Charles' former sister-in-law and Prince Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will not be attending the coronation ceremony. Ferguson and Prince Andrew have been divorced since 1996 but Ferguson still retains her title as the Duchess of York. She also still lives with Prince Andrew at Royal Lodge, which they were recently asked to vacate. Andrew, himself, will not participate in the ceremony although he is expected to attend it.&nbsp;

Lady Pamela Hicks

<img alt="p" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="98beb82f-a712-445d-8ef1-dabd2bcb6586" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/TELEMMGLPICT000012592454_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqpVlberWd9EgFPZtcLiMQfyf2A9a6I9YchsjMeADBa08.jpeg" />

Owing to the downsizing of the event, several British aristocrats and politicians have been snubbed from the ceremony. Lady Pamela Hicks is one of them as it is being reported that the Palace did not extend an invitation to the former lady-in-waiting to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Hicks is also the first cousin of Charles later, the late Prince Philip. Her daughter, India, revealed on Instagram that her mother didn't mind. In fact, she found it to be sensible to base invitations on meritocracy, not aristocracy, and said she plans to "follow with great interest the events of this new reign."

Sir Elton John

<img alt="e" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f1a9a48d-2bc5-4ce3-a568-5ed972989199" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/3000_7.jpeg" />

Sir Elton John has had a long-standing relationship with the royal family. He was known to be close to Princess Diana, King Charles's former wife. Elton John is also known to be close to Harry and Meghan. Reports state that the 'Rocket Man' singer was asked to perform at the King's coronation. His team confirmed to Rolling Stone that he declined due to a scheduling conflict.

Several news agencies have also reported that leaders from Russia, Belarus, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, and Iran have also been not inviting and hence will not be attending. Leaders from North Korea and Nicaragua were "offered the chance to attend at a diplomatic level," but would not be attending.&nbsp;

Donald Trump slams Joe Biden for not attending Charles' coronation

As the United States is gearing up for the next year's presidential elections, the power tussle has also taken President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden into its fold. Biden's son is facing scrutiny on accusations of his involvement with tax, foreign lobbying and gun-related violations.&nbsp;

<h2>When did the investigation start?&nbsp;</h2>

Hunter Biden has been facing the wrath of the investigation since 2018, and&nbsp;2022 marked the fourth year of the probe, which is now nearing decision on pressing charges. Any negative outcome of the investigation can topple Biden's chances to keep holding his top seat at the Oval Office.

<h2>Hunter Biden's laptop&nbsp;</h2>

Hunter Biden's laptop controversy started in 2019 when his attorneys made a case levelling accusations on a computer repair shop owner John Paul Mac Isaac for having provided unauthorised access to&nbsp;his laptop and making its content&nbsp;public by sharing it with New York Post.&nbsp;

The details were allegedly breached in the run up to the 2020 US presidential elections.&nbsp;

At the time, Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell wrote in a letter to Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings, “This failed dirty political trick directly resulted in the exposure, exploitation, and manipulation of Mr. Biden’s private and personal information. Mr. Mac Isaac’s intentional, reckless, and unlawful conduct allowed for hundreds of gigabytes of Mr. Biden’s personal data, without any discretion, to be circulated around the Internet." &nbsp;

In his defence, Mac Isaac said that there was an agreement made between Biden and the computer repair shop owner that if no one comes to pick up the laptop it would automatically become Isaac’s property.&nbsp;

Later, the FBI agents as part of their investigation into accusations against Hunter Biden served a subpoena and seized the laptop on December 9, 2019.&nbsp;

<h2>Alleged Trump involvement&nbsp;</h2>

The controversy also allegedly involves former US president Donald Trump. As per reports, Trump's former aide Garrett Ziegler posted emails and other documents from Hunter Biden's laptop on a public research website run by him.&nbsp;

A report by Politico indicates that Ziegler received the contents of the laptop through former New York City police commissioner Giuliani and his associate Bernard Kerik.&nbsp;

<h2>Hunter's argument on laptop controversy</h2>

Hunter Biden denied leaving his laptop to the computer repair shop. “Not that I remember at all,” Hunter Biden said while replying to a query whether he left the laptop at the shop.&nbsp;In an interview with CBS, Hunter Biden also said he has “no idea whether or not” the laptop belongs to him. In the latest, Hunter Biden accused the shop of trying to invade his privacy and trying to advance his political motives by making public his personal data, CNN reported citing new federal court filings.

<h2>Biden's attorney meets US Delaware Attorney David Weiss</h2>

Another controversy erupted when media reports suggested that US President Joe Biden's attorneys held meeting with US Delaware Attorney David Weiss in connection to the Hunter Biden investigation.&nbsp;

Usually, as per Washington Post, this kind of meeting takes place when the defence lawyers urge prosecutors to not go forward with the indictment in the ongoing case. The meeting could also have been done for any other requests such as reducing the charges.&nbsp;

<h2>Four-year long investigation nearing decision&nbsp;</h2>

As per sources cited by the Washington Post, the investigation is nearing decision on charges to be pressed. US Attorney General Merrick Garland assured Congress that politics will be set aside from the investigation into the Hunter Biden case. “I stand by my testimony, and I refer you to the U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware, who is in charge of this case and capable of making any decisions that he feels are appropriate," Garland told reporters.&nbsp;

<h2>Drug abuse allegations&nbsp;</h2>

Apart from the suspicious overseas transactions, Hunter Biden is also under radar over gun law violations as the investigators try to find out whether he lied on a form prior to purchasing a gun by denying that he was a drug abuser.
&nbsp;
Democrats and Republicans have been at loggerheads over the Hunter Biden controversy. Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe claimed that the laptop, a centre of the lawsuit slugfest, was "not part of some Russian disinformation campaign."&nbsp;

However, this claim was rejected by Democrats and several others.&nbsp;

About two weeks ago, a special agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sought whistleblower protection for disclosing details on the mishandling of a criminal investigation in Hunter Biden case.

EXPLAINED | Four-year-long Hunter Biden probe nears decision on pressing charges. What is the controversy?

United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday (May 4) that the ongoing conflict in Sudan must end and threatened sanctions against those responsible for the bloodshed. Issuing a statement, President Biden said that the violence taking place in Sudan is a tragedy, and it is a betrayal of the Sudanese people's clear demand for civilian government and a transition to democracy. &nbsp;

"I join the peace-loving people of Sudan and leaders around the world in calling for a durable ceasefire between the belligerent parties. This violence, which has already stolen the lives of hundreds of civilians and began during the holy month of Ramadan, is unconscionable. It must end," Biden said.&nbsp;

Biden also talked about American efforts for the safe departure of thousands of people - Americans and others from Sudan.&nbsp;

"Our diplomatic efforts to urge all parties to end the military conflict and allow unhindered humanitarian access continue, as do our efforts to assist those remaining Americans, including by providing them information on exit options," Biden further said and highlighted that Washington stands ready to support enhanced humanitarian assistance when conditions allow.

On Thursday, clashes were reported in Khartoum and its adjoining cities of Omdurman and Bahri- a violation of the latest seven-day truce agreement. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the army was trying to push the RSF from positions around the presidential palace and military headquarters.

The United Nations said that it was planning for an outflow of 860,000 people from Sudan and that $445 million would be needed to support them just through October. US President&nbsp;Joe Biden hosted Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House and reaffirmed US support for the security of the Philippines while stressing the "deep friendship" the two countries share, as worries about Chinese Navy harassment of Philippine vessels mount.&nbsp;

Biden spoke about the developments in the US-Philippine relationship during his Monday meeting with Marcos. This partnership has had its ups and downs through the years and was in a challenging situation when Marcos took office less than a year ago, reported The Guardian.&nbsp;

“We are facing new challenges and I couldn’t think of a better partner to have than you,” Biden told Marcos at the start of their Oval Office meeting.

“The United States also remains ironclad in our commitment to the defence of the Philippines, including in the&nbsp;South China Sea, and we will continue to support the Philippines' military modernisation goals," he added.

Marcos said the relationship was important&nbsp;as the Philippines and the Pacific face “possibly the most complicated geopolitical situation in the world right now. So, it is only natural for the Philippines to look to its sole treaty partner in the world to strengthen and redefine the relationship that we have and the roles that we play in the face of the&nbsp;rising tensions that we see now.”

Following the meeting, the White House announced the transfer to the Philippines of three C-130 planes and two coastal patrol ships. The two nations claimed to have adopted defence directives aimed at strengthening collaboration and interoperability between their militaries in all spheres of space, including cyberspace.

The White House on Monday announced that the US will end its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travellers and federal workers on May 11, nearly three years after first enforcing the policy.

The White House on Monday announced that the US will end its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travellers and federal workers on May 11, nearly three years after first enforcing the policy. "Today, we are announcing that the administration will end the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for Federal employees, Federal contractors, and international air travellers at the end of the day on May 11," read the statement. Additionally, the Health and Human Services (HHS) and Homeland Security departments (DHS) will also initiate their own processes to end vaccination requirements. "HHS and DHS announced today that they will start the process to end their vaccination requirements for Head Start educators, CMS-certified healthcare facilities, and certain non-citizens at the land border. In the coming days, further details related to ending these requirements will be provided," it added. According to the White House, the administration was moving into a "different phase" of the Covid response as mandatory vaccination was one of the measures that was no longer required. Notably, the USA is one of the last few countries to remove the mandate for travellers. WATCH | Trending on WION: U.S. energy department's report claims Covid-19 was likely a result of lab leak × Vaccine mandate and the political fight The vaccine mandate also became the centre of a political slugfest between the Republicans and Democrats. The requirement was one of the reasons why Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic was not able to enter the US and was forced to miss several high-profile tournaments, including the Grand Slam. The Biden administration will be ending the requirements on the same day it terminates the pandemic-related public health emergency. Last month, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan congressional resolution, weeks before the emergency mandate was set to expire. Former president Donald Trump's health and human services secretary Alex Azar first declared a public health emergency on January 31, 2020. The public health experts at the time argued that requirements were necessary so as to confront vaccine hesitancy and increase protection against the deadly virus. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last month also stated it was planning to stop tracking the spread of COVID-19 in communities around the country. The CDC will keep a tab on Covid infections by tracking hospitalisations in some areas. ALSO READ | As US public health emergency deadline approaches, CDC to stop tracking community Covid numbers “We’re not going to lose complete surveillance, but we will lose that hyper-local sensitivity to it perhaps,” said CDC. More than 1.13 million in the US have died from COVID-19 over the last three years. However, with the cases slowing down, the need for vaccine mandate has been nullified. The Biden administration in the United States is considering pulling off a Donald Trump move on illegal immigration. The Biden administration is considering sending 1,500 troops to the southern borders in the immediate future, Fox News reported citing sources. The move is in consideration amid concerns that tens of thousands of migrants may travel within the US borders once Title 42 is lifted.&nbsp;

Title 42 refers to the Covid-related restrictions under which the US authorities send away hundreds of thousands of migrants, including families, back to Mexico citing the contagious nature of COVID-19.

Earlier, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had warned the migrants that illegal entry into the United States "will result in removal."

Ahead of an anticipated counter-offensive by Ukraine, the Russian army has replaced its highest-ranking general in charge of logistics. Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, who is under British sanctions for his role in the siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol — seized by Russia around a year ago — has been replaced by Alexei Kuzmenkov, a former official from the National Guard, according to a statement from the Russian defence ministry.

"Kuzmenkov was appointed to the position of deputy defence minister of the Russian Federation, responsible for the logistical support of the Armed Forces," said the ministry in its statement. As per AFP, the statement did not mention why Mizintsev had been replaced after only seven months on the job.

However, the replacement is no surprise. Last week, several influential Russian war correspondents, as per AFP, had predicted that Mizintsev would likely be removed from his post.

The Russian army has reportedly faced significant logistical challenges during its offensive in Ukraine. These challenges were highlighted during a chaotic mobilisation drive last year.

Mizintsev, who has been nicknamed "the Butcher of Mariupol" by some Western media, was appointed to the&nbsp;highest-ranking position of general in charge of logistics, soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the mobilisation drive last September.&nbsp;

"Kuzmenkov was appointed to the position of deputy defence minister of the Russian Federation, responsible for the logistical support of the Armed Forces," said the ministry in its statement. As per AFP, the statement did not mention why Mizintsev had been replaced after only seven months on the job. Also read | Ukraine will launch counteroffensive without Western fighter aircraft, says Zelensky However, the replacement is no surprise. Mizintsev, who has been nicknamed "the Butcher of Mariupol" by some Western media, was appointed to the highest-ranking position of general in charge of logistics, soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the mobilisation drive last September. 'Butcher of Mariupol': Russia replaces its logistics commander ahead of Ukraine counteroffensive

United States President Joe Biden on Saturday (April 29) used the White House Correspondents' Dinner to highlight the free press and called for the release of journalists and citizens, who are detained abroad.

Biden said, "Let me start on a serious note, members of our administration are here to send a message to the country and, quite frankly, to the world. The free press is a pillar, maybe the pillar of a free society, not the enemy."

Biden mentioned the family of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, who was arrested in Russia last month after being&nbsp;accused of espionage, but US officials deny the allegations. A media campaign has also been launched, asking Russia to release him as soon as possible.&nbsp;

News agencies have reported that Gershkovich is the first known foreign journalist arrested in Russia on spying charges since the collapse of the Soviet Union.&nbsp;

Biden praised Gershkovich's courage and said, "Evan went to Russia to shed light on the darkness that you escaped from years ago." He noted that "tonight our message is this: journalism is not a crime". &nbsp;

Biden also noted that the authorities are "working every day to secure his release" and they are "looking at opportunities and tools to bring him home". The US president said, "We keep the faith."&nbsp;

Ties between US and Russia have worsened in the past 12 months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this week, Russia said it had denied a consular visit to Gershkovich in retaliation for Washington not issuing visas to several Russian journalists.&nbsp;

Biden also mentioned Debra Tice, who is the mother of Austin Tice, a journalist been held captive in Syria for more than 10 years. He said, "Evan and Austin should be released immediately, along with every American held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad."&nbsp;

He also mentioned basketball player Brittney Griner, who was released by Russia as part of a prisoner swap last year. Griner was also among the dinner's prominent attendees.&nbsp;

He also mentioned Paul Whelan, the former US marine who is presently held in Russia, and pledged to Whelan's family that he and his government would not relent until Whelan was released.&nbsp;

Apart from the serious issues, Biden also told some jokes at the occasion, which was meant to celebrate the Constitution's First Amendment guarantees of free speech and to advocate for a free press worldwide. Biden made fun of his age as he said, "I believe in the First Amendment. Not just because my good friend Jimmy Madison wrote it."

He added,&nbsp;“Look, I get that age is a completely reasonable issue. It's in everybody's mind and by everyone, I mean the New York Times. Headline: ‘Biden's advanced age is a big issue. Trump's, however, is not’.”&nbsp;

‘Journalism is not a crime’: Biden calls for release of journalists held around the world

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden will meet the Pacific Islands leaders next month in Papua New Guinea for a “historic future-oriented” meeting, the region’s Prime Minister James Marape said in a statement on Sunday.

“This is a historic first and at the same time a ‘going forward’ futuristic meeting of global superpowers, in the biggest country in the Pacific,” Marape said.

Modi and Biden will stop in Papua New Guinea on the way to Australia for the Quad, which also includes Japan and Australia, on May 24.

It will be the first official visit to Papua New Guinea for both the state leaders. While Modi’s two-day visit to the island country will begin on May 21, Biden will land on May 22.

Both will participate at the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation Summit (India Pacific Summit) on May 22.

The Forum brings together 14 Pacific Islands — Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu with India at the head of state/ government level.

For the Biden administration, strengthening ties with Papa New Guinea is major key security policy as the island nation is being courted by China, as Marape seeks to boost foreign investment. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the nation in 2018.

China and Australia have been major aid and infrastructure donors to Papa New Guinea, according to Reuters news agency.

"In the Indo-Pacific conversation, PNG and the Pacific cannot be ignored. With our combined forest and sea areas, we have the world's greatest carbon sink, and the biggest sea and air space on earth," Marape said.

Indian PM Modi, US President Biden to meet Pacific Islands leaders in Papua New Guinea

Days after US President Joe Biden announced his candidature for re-election next year, Republican presidential nominee seeker Nikki Haley has&nbsp;launched an attack on the Democrat leader. Haley said Biden, who is currently 80 years old would likely die and that voters will have to count on Vice President Kamala Harris if he wins the re-election.&nbsp;

“He [Biden]&nbsp;announced that he’s running again in 2024. I think that we can all be very clear and say with a matter of fact that if you vote for Joe Biden you really are counting on a President Harris, because the idea that he would make it until 86 years old is not something that I think is likely," Haley was quoted as saying by Fox News.&nbsp;

Haley's rather direct attack on Biden's old age rubbed the White House the wrong way as Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said,&nbsp;“As you know, we don’t directly respond to campaigns from here.&nbsp;But honestly, I forgot she was running.”

‘Biden will likely die...’: Republican Nikki Haley makes this shocking prediction

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has issued a warning to the US and South Korea for signing a new nuclear weapons agreement and called President Joe Biden 'senile' and 'too miscalculating and irresponsibly brave' for his statements.&nbsp;

Kim said that the new agreement&nbsp;aimed at&nbsp;strengthening deterrence against Pyongyang would lead to 'more serious danger' in the region.&nbsp;

“When we consider that this expression was personally used by the president of the US, our most hostile adversary, it is threatening rhetoric for which he should be prepared for far too great an after-storm,” she was quoted as saying by state news agency KCNA.&nbsp;

"The more the enemies are dead set on staging nuclear war exercises, and the more nuclear assets they deploy in the vicinity of the Korean peninsula, the stronger the exercise of our right to self-defence will become in direct proportion to them," she added.&nbsp;

“The pipe dream of the US and (South) Korea will henceforth be faced with the entity of more powerful strength."

<h2>Why did Kim's sister lash out?</h2>

The statement by&nbsp;Kim Yo Jong comes in the backdrop of Biden saying Kim Jong Un's regime would cease to exist if he were to launch a nuclear attack on the United States or its allies. Biden made the comment after signing the Washington Declaration while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeo was on a US visit earlier this week.&nbsp;

"A nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies or partners is unacceptable and will result at the end of whatever regime were to take such an action," Biden had&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

This is not the first instance when&nbsp;Pyongyang's top leaders have hurled such derogatory words at&nbsp;the US president. In 2017, Kim Jong Un called then-president Donald Trump a&nbsp;“mentally deranged U.S. dotard” while both were engaged in exchanging verbal threats.&nbsp;

The US will also deploy nuclear-armed submarines to South Korea as part of the agreement. Additionally, there will be a routine visit of aircraft carriers and bombers to the region to send a message to the enemy, informed officials.

Kim Jong Un’s sister calls Joe Biden ‘senile’, blasts US-S Korea for new nuclear deal

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the 'cheat sheet' US President Joe Biden was seen flashing during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday.&nbsp;

She said it was a&nbsp;regular protocol and in line with the press office's job to 'get a sense' of what the media wants to ask.

"It is entirely normal for a president to be briefed on reporters who will be asking questions at a press conference, and issues that we expect they might ask about," Jean-Pierre said.

“It is not surprising that yesterday we would anticipate questions that he did receive on the visit with the South Korean president - or about 2024, that was completely expected, or about the debt ceiling which he took questions at the end. I would point out that the question that was asked was different than what was on the card that you all saw,” she told reporters.

She added, "And, let’s not forget, we do these briefings every day. And a lot of the questions that you.... that you all tell me, that’s how we brief him as well. You all ask me, that’s how we brief him as well. So, look, we do not have specific questions in advance. That's not something that we do."&nbsp;

<h2>Biden's 'Cheat Sheet'</h2>

Pierre's comments came after President Joe Biden was seen holding a 'Cheat sheet' during a press conference with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol,&nbsp;sparking outrage that he knew beforehand about the questions to be asked by the journalists.

The note card that Biden was captured holding, had a photo of Los Angeles Times journalist Courtney Subramanian along with the pronunciation of her last name.

It also had a general summary of the question she would ask which read, &nbsp;"How are YOU squaring YOUR domestic priorities—like reshoring semiconductors manufacturing—with alliance-based foreign policy?"

Though, in a statement given to Fox News, Los Angeles Times Vice President of Communications, Hillary Manning said that their reporter did not submit any questions of the Q&amp;A with President Biden in advance.

The 'cheat sheet' drew criticism from Republicans who argued that the US President works alongside the news organisations to help control his image.
