Biden-Yoon Meet: US to dock nuclear submarines in South Korea for first time in 40 years

United States President Joe Biden will become the first sitting president of the States to visit Papua New Guinea in at least a century, said Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko on Thursday, while he spoke about the plans for the symbolic but brief trip.

In May, Biden will stop in Port Moresby as per the plans as he travels to attend the G7 summit in Japan and the Quad summit in Australia, said the foreign minister.

"He is coming on the 22nd, in the morning, and will be here for three hours only," said Tkatchenko said, stating that the meeting is likely to focus on security, economy, and climate change.

The trip of the US president symbolises an agreement to the rapidly growing strategic importance of Papua New Guinea, as the US and its allies fight with China for influence across the region of Asia-Pacific.

In 20218, Chinese President Xi Jinping had made a visit to Port Moresby to much fanfare, as flags of China were hoisted across the capital and his motorcade whizzed past the welcoming crowds.

The officials of the US and Australia have been concerned about the increasing investment of China in the resource-rich Melanesian nation.

Concerns have also been raised about China attempting to set up a military outpost, which pushed Washington to propose the idea of setting up a joint naval facility on Manus Island.

Joe Biden spells out Kim Jong-Un's 'end' with South Korean leader

South Korea will not develop its own nuclear weapons while the US will aid in the use of them in any potential conflict with North Korea, according to a new agreement, known as the Washington Declaration, signed on Wednesday by President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol in the White House.

The declaration will help in 'deterring and defending' by engaging in joint training, information training and military exercises. A US-South Korean consultative group will also be created under the declaration. It will provide Seoul with more information and input on nuclear policy but with the caveat that Washington will have the sole command of its weapons. As part of the agreement, the US will also deploy nuclear-armed submarines to South Korea. Additionally, there will be a routine visit of aircraft carriers and bombers to the region to send a message to the enemy, informed officials. Notably, this is the first time since the US withdrew all of its nuclear weapons from South Korea in 1991 that talks about such an agreement have reached any fruition. However, there is no immediate plan to station nuclear weapons in South Korea - a marked difference from the Cold War strategy when US nuclear weapons were deployed to protect its allies in Europe. "The United States has not taken these steps, really, since the height of the Cold War with our very closest handful of allies in Europe. And we are seeking to ensure that by undertaking these new procedures, these new steps, that our commitment to extended deterrence is unquestionable," a senior official was quoted as saying by AFP. ALSO READ | Leaked Pentagon documents reveal South Korea's turmoil over sending arms to Ukraine S Koreans want the development of nuclear weapons The signing of the accord comes against the backdrop of the majority of South Koreans showing support to build an independent nuclear force. A recent survey showed that 71 per cent of Koreans believed that the time was right for the country to develop its own arsenal. In the last year and a half, North Korea has ramped up its military programmes involving nuclear weapons. It has been firing missiles indiscriminately, including several ICBMs and has openly stated that it will not concede its nuclear capabilities. Seoul for San Francisco? South Koreans are wary of trusting the US. The idea has gained prominence, especially after N Korea developed missiles that are capable of reaching major US cities. Many fear that Washington may sacrifice Seoul for San Francisco, if push comes to shove. Earlier this year, even President Yoon himself discussed the possibility of such a situation. “It’s possible that the problem gets worse and our country will introduce tactical nuclear weapons or build them on our own. If that’s the case, we can have our own nuclear weapons pretty quickly, given our scientific and technological capabilities.” ALSO WATCH | North Korean missile could hit US in 33 mins, says study; find gaps in US missile defence However, Yoon did not pursue the line of thought for long and took a quiet reversal on it. South Korea is a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty - meaning it cannot obtain nuclear weapons. Hence, signing the agreement with the US appears to be the safer bet, experts suggest. Biden’s 2024 presidential bid is 'elder abuse' by 'managerial class': Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy

US President Joe Biden has announced he will run for re-election in 2024, to "finish the job" he started in 2021. The 80-year-old, who is America's oldest president, said he wanted to extend his run for another four years. But there are conflicting views on his re-election bid.

There is a sense of acceptance but a lack of excitement and enthusiasm for America's first octogenarian president's re-election bid. Before the announcement, Democrats had said they like and approve of Biden, but a report by CBS noted that there will be more "acceptance" than "excitement" and also there will be "nervousness" than "confidence".

Polls have shown that the majority of Americans don't wish Biden to run again. But he is still running—the second time in four years. So, a sitting US president is willing to go against the approval ratings. Last time it was Donald Trump, whose campaign failed in 2020.

Biden's announcement on April 25

Biden gave a speech to trade union members and highlighted his accomplishments. He showcased the construction jobs which were created since he took office.

"We — you and I — together we’re turning things around and we’re doing it in a big way. It's time to finish the job. Finish the job."

Biden released a three-minute video on the fourth anniversary of when he declared for the White House in 2019. It basically details what Biden's plans are, and how he is intending to go about everything. In the video, he promised to heal the "soul of the nation" amid the turbulent presidency of Donald Trump.

Biden said: "I said we are in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer."

Biden's re-election announcement. The right decision?

A CBS report, based on the poll it ran, stated that the Democrats who want Biden to run again think his job performance warrants it and they believe that he can beat Republicans, again. However, what's concerning is that nearly half of Democrats don't want him to run. They have said that his age is the main reason and that they are not worried about him winning or losing. The polls show them saying that it's "time for someone new".

Another poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that just 47 per cent of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term, up from 37 per cent in February.

Despite the conflict, it is expected that supporters, and Biden himself, will bank on his decade-long experience in politics and also the first-term legislative achievements will come in handy.

Trends show that he will win his party’s nomination and there will be no serious Democratic challengers. But the road to ultimate victory will be a massive struggle as he is going to face plenty of hardships to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation and Democrats will vie to be united, as the prospect of Trump returning to power should be enough for the party to stay together as a team.

Biden's health issues

Concerns have been raised over Biden's deteriorating health as his gaffes on various occasions have caused critics to cast aspersions on his ability to perform in office. However, he was declared "fit for duty" by his doctor earlier this year in February. It was the final annual medical check-up before he announced that he would run for the 2024 presidential election. But a former White House physician slammed the health report of Biden and asked to end the "cover-up". US Representative Ronny Jackson, who served the Trump and Obama administrations, called the health report of Biden "alarming" and alleged that it doesn't mention the "declining" mental health of the US president.

Biden's physician, Kevin O'Connor, said in a letter published by the White House, "President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those of as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief." As per the report, Biden remains "fit for duty" and can fully execute all of his responsibilities without any "exemptions or accommodations." However, Jackson told US-based Fox News that the report was nothing but a "cover-up".

The challenges Biden faces

The Biden administration faced criticism over the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. The massive military aid to help Ukraine against Russia in the ongoing war has also been slammed by some Americans amid uncertain economic crosscurrents. Coronavirus, abortion, and unending gun violence are some other burning issues.

Weighing in on the same, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement, "if voters let Biden 'finish the job,' inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off."

In such a scenario, how Biden will forge forward, will be interesting to watch.

United State's proposal for the Group of Seven (G7) countries to ban all exports to Russia was met with resistance, ahead of a summit of the bloc.

As per a Financial Times report, the European Union (EU) and Japan pushed back against the proposal during negotiations ahead of a summit of the world's most advanced economies.

According to documents seen by the Financial Times, G7 leaders are drafting a statement for their meeting in Hiroshima next month. This statement includes a US proposal for a pledge to replace the current sector-by-sector sanctions regime against Russia with a complete export ban, with a few exemptions for agricultural, medical and other products.

The pledge is reportedly prompted by Washington's frustration over the loopholes in the existing system that allow Russia to continue to import Western technology.

During a preparatory meeting last week, EU and Japan however said that the move isn't feasible. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the officials said that from their perspective "it is simply not do-able."

The US said that it would "continue to look for ways to hold Russia accountable."

The disagreement as per FT underscores the lack of additional options available to G& leaders as the Western nations seek to penalise Russia for its invasion of Ukraine that began 15 months back. Since then, a number of sanction measures designed to cut off Moscow's economy from the global markets and deprive it of Western imports of technology, machinery and finance.

Japan, EU say US plans to ban all exports to Russia 'simply not do-able'

The 80-year-old president of the USA, Joe Biden, launched his re-election bid Tuesday even as polls show a considerable decline in his popularity across the country. Biden is already the oldest man ever to serve as the US president, and if he gets re-elected in the 2024 elections, he will leave the White House at the age of 86. An NBC News poll published Sunday revealed that at least 70 per cent of Americans and 51 per cent of Democrats want Biden not to seek re-election.

But the question—If not Biden, then who?—puts the entire debate to an end. As Biden embarks on a journey no one has taken before in America’s political history, let’s take a look at his political career.

How Joe Biden entered politics

Biden used to work as a clerk in 1968 at a law firm headed by prominent local Republican William Prickett. He would also claim he thought of himself as a Republican. However, later he joined a firm headed by a local Democratic leader and joined the Democratic Party. It is speculated that he didn’t join the Republican Party because he used to dislike Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon.

In 1970, Biden successfully ran for the 4th district seat on the New Castle County Council and defeated Republican candidate Lawrence T. Messick. He served in the office till January 1, 1973.

In 1972, Biden defeated J. Caleb Boggs, a Republican incumbent, to become the junior senator from Delaware. A few weeks after his election, he lost his wife and daughter in a road accident.
In January 1973, Biden was sworn in as a senator by Secretary of the Senate Francis R. Valeo at the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Centre. He was the sixth-youngest senator in American history at the age of 30.

In 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, and 2008, Biden won Senate elections with almost 60% of the vote.
In 1988 and 2008, Biden declared his candidacy as the Democratic presidential candidate. He was forced to withdraw his nominations both times.

In 2008, Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama privately told Biden to play a very important role in his administration. Later, Obama announced Biden would be his running mate. Following Obama’s victory, Biden served as USA’s Vice-President from 2009 to 2017.

In 2019, Joe Biden officially launched his bid for the US presidency against Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

In November 2020, Biden defeated Donald Trump in a controversy-ridden election, and in January 2021, he became the 46th president of the US.

Now, in April 2023, Joe Biden has officially launched his re-election bid for the 2024 elections. If he is re-elected again in the upcoming elections, he will again become the oldest person to ever serve as USA’s president. He will be 82 years old on the day of his inauguration in January 2025.

Joe Biden's political career: 'Self-declared Republican' turned Democratic POTUS seeks another term

Russia has started using its new T-14 Armata battle tanks to fire on Ukrainian positions, according to the RIA state news agency. However, the report claims that the tanks "have not yet participated in direct assault operations."

As per the report, the T-14 Armata battle tanks have been fitted with extra protection on their flanks, and crews have undergone "combat coordination" at training grounds in Ukraine.

RIA states that the tank, which on a highway has a maximum speed of 80 kilometres or 50 miles an hour, also boasts an unmanned turret.

Crew can remotely control the armaments from "an isolated armoured capsule located in the front of the hull," reports Reuters.

This news comes just a couple of months after the British military intelligence in January reported that Russian forces in Ukraine were reluctant to accept the first tranche of the tanks due to their "poor condition."

"Production is probably only in the low tens, while commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat," the British military said.

"Eleven years in development," the programme has been dogged with delays, reduction in planned fleet size, and reports of manufacturing problems, it said.

The content of Hunter Biden's laptop has been the source of hundreds of articles & allegations against the 53-year-old one-time financier. His alleged past business dealings in Ukraine & china continue to shadow joe Biden. Hunter Biden laptop saga: New revelation question Blinken's alleged role

A special agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is seeking whistleblower protection to disclose details about what the agent alleges is the mishandling of a criminal investigation into United States President Joe Biden's son Hunter. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Thursday (April 20), the IRS special agent's lawyer Mark Lytle sent a letter to the members of Congress which said that his client has information about a "failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate deposition" of the investigation related to Hunter Biden's taxes and whether he made a false statement in connection with a gun purchase.

Lytle said in the letter that despite serious risks of retaliation, "my client is offering to provide you with information necessary to exercise your constitutional oversight function and wishes to make the disclosures in a nonpartisan manner to the leadership of the relevant committees on both sides of the political aisle.”
