United States President Joe Biden is unlikely to visit Nagasaki during his trip to Japan for a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Hiroshima in May due to scheduling conflicts. According to a report by the Kyodo News agency on Thursday (April 6), Biden would have been the first sitting American president to have visited the southwestern Japanese city, which the US hit with an atomic bomb after dropping one on Hiroshima in August 1945 in the final days of World War II.

Sources told Kyodo News that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida hoped he and Biden could send a message to the world from Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards a world free of nuclear weapons, with concerns growing over whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will use such destructive arms in his country's war against Ukraine.

Prime Minister Kishida, who put forward his vision of a world free of nuclear weapons since taking office in October 2021, was eager to accompany Biden on his visit to Nagasaki, the sources added. However, a Japanese government source told the news agency that it was difficult to adjust the US President's itinerary to visit Nagasaki.

Shigemitsu Tanaka, the head of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council said that as president of a "country that developed and used nuclear weapons, I wanted (Biden) to know the reality of the atomic bombing" in the city."

With Russia's ongoing offensive in Ukraine, Tanaka added that Biden should have decided to visit Nagasaki with Moscow's threat of nuclear use increasing.

Back in 2016, then-US president Barack Obama became the first sitting American president to visit Hiroshima on the occasion of the previous G-7 summit in Japan. Kishida, who was Japan's then foreign minister, along with then prime minister Shinzo Abe.

On March 21, Japanese PM Kishida met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kishida had been the only leader of the G7 countries who had not visited war-torn Ukraine.

Zelensky said in a joint news conference with Kishida that he would join an upcoming G7 summit in Japan via an online link following an invitation from the Japanese prime minister.

US President Biden unlikely to visit Nagasaki during Japan trip for G7: Report

Robert F Kennedy Jr., the son of assassinated 1968 US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy, has announced that he will make bid for White House in 2024. By throwing his hat in the ring, he has become the second long-shot Democratic Party candidate to challenge US President Joe Biden in his expected run for re-election.

Kennedy (69) filed papers with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday.

Marianne Williamson, the self-help guru who warned of the "dark psychic force" unleashed by Republican President Donald Trump, launched a Democratic presidential bid for 2024 in March, calling for "justice and love".

Kennedy Jr is longtime vaccine skeptic. He was tapped in 2017 to oversee a presidential panel to review vaccine safety and science at the request of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, a move that drew immediate criticism from scientists and public health experts who feared it would legitimise skeptics of childhood immunisations.

Instagram removed Kennedy's account in 2021 after he repeatedly shared debunked claims about Covid. Instagram said that it was violation of its policies of the coronavirus pandemic.

The environmental lawyer, a member of the storied American political dynasty, is a nephew of assassinated president John F Kennedy.

Kennedy hinted at his presidential ambitions in a Twitter post last month asking for help in deciding whether he should run for the White House.

"If it looks like I can raise the money and mobilise enough people to win, I’ll jump in the race," he wrote.

"If I run, my top priority will be to end the corrupt merger between state and corporate power that has ruined our economy, shattered the middle class, polluted our landscapes and waters, poisoned our children and robbed us of our values and freedoms."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday arrived in Poland, a close ally that has provided refuge to millions of Ukrainian citizens and has assisted the Kyiv government with vital weaponry. Soon after the leader's arrival, Marcin Przydacz, a senior official with the Polish presidency, while speaking to TVN24 television said that "the president has crossed the Polish border, he is on Polish territory." The visit comes as Ukraine readies to conduct a counter-offensive to recapture its land in the east and south from Russian control in the coming weeks or months.

Reuters reports that on his first visit to Poland, Volodymyr Zelensky has been awarded the nation's highest order, called the "Order of White Eagle".

In Warsaw, Zelensky met with the nation's President Andrzej Duda, who honoured him with the order.

Duda said that "the Order of White Eagle which I have an honour today to award to Mister President Zelensky is the oldest and the most precious Polish order."

Following the meeting, the two leaders held a press conference where Duda said that Poland will if the need arises, give its "whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine".

"I think that in the future we will be able to transfer our whole remaining fleet of MiG-29s to Ukraine if there is still such a need," said Duda.

The Polish president said that given that the remaining fighter jets in Poland's possession had been "adapted to NATO standards", the move would require a green light from NATO allies.

He specified that Poland would be able to pass on its MiG-29s to Ukraine as they get the new South Korean FA-50 fighter jets as well as the US-made F-35 stealth jets that have been ordered.

During his latest rare trip outside of Ukraine, Zelensky will also meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

As per AFP, he will also deliver remarks in the historic centre of the Polish capital, Warsaw.

US journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia last week on spying claims as per a Moscow court, is reportedly appealing his detention. The court on Monday made this announcement, adding that the date for this appeal is yet to be announced. A spokesperson for Moscow's Lefortovo district court, according to an AFP report, said that "the date of the hearing on his detention appeal will be announced this week."

The appeal, as per the spokesperson, has been filed by the same lawyer that represented the Wall Street journalist during his previous detention hearing.

AFP reports that Gershkovich, who previously worked with the news agency, was remanded in custody until May 29.

31-year-old Gershkovich is thought to be the first foreign journalist to be taken into custody for espionage charges since the break-up of the USSR.

His arrest has drawn outrage from the West and is seen as a serious escalation of Moscow's crackdown on media.

In 2021, the Biden administration signed a “secret contract” with the Israeli-based hacking firm, NSO Group, to purchase its software that can covertly hack into mobile phones across the world without the user’s knowledge or consent, the New York Times (NYT) newspaper reported.

This secret agreement was reportedly finalised on November 8, and took place between a company, called “Cleopatra Holdings”—which acted as a front of the US government—and NSO’s American affiliate.

The software is known as “Landmark,” a geolocation system that reveals the exact location of a person by inputting their phone number.

Notably, the agreement was signed five days after the US government blacklisted the Israeli firm, with Joe Biden accusing the company of providing its spyware to authoritarian governments—who reportedly used to snoop on political opponents, activists and journalists.

According to the NTY, which claims to have access to this secret document, the agreement is still active, and states that the “United States government” would be the ultimate user of the tool.

Moreover, the government even tested, and deployed the spyware against targets of its choice in Mexico before making the purchase.

The White House officials, reacting to the report, said they are not “aware of the contract”, but added that it was “highly concerning”.

“We are not aware of this contract, and any use of this product would be highly concerning,” a senior administration official told NTY.

The development comes a week after US President Joe Biden signed an executive order banning the use of commercial spyware by the American government. The ban applies to “operational” use that poses a “risk” to American national security, specifically counterintelligence.

US President Joe Biden made another gaffe during one of his public speeches while visiting the tornado-hit town of Rolling Fork in the northeastern state of Mississippi.

US President Joe Biden made another gaffe during one of his public speeches while visiting the tornado-hit town of Rolling Fork in the northeastern state of Mississippi. Delivering a speech while addressing the community, Biden repeatedly referred to the town as ‘Rolling Stone’. Rolling Stone is an American monthly magazine that focuses on music, politics, and popular culture, while The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962 and still counted among the most popular and enduring bands of the rock era. "We're not just here for today, I'm determined that we're going to leave nothing behind. We're going to get it done for you," said Biden in the speech, before adding, "I'm making sure you got a place to sleep, food to eat, helping you rebuild your lives in Rolling Stone." Having committed the blunder once, Biden, seemingly unaware, repeated the gaffe and said, "The town of Rolling Stone will be back, and we'll be with you every step of the way." It was only towards the end of his speech that the president, known to make frequent gaffes, realised his mistake and said, “What did I say, I said Rolling Fork. Rolling Stone. I got my mind going here.” Biden, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi: "The town of Rolling Stone will be back" pic.twitter.com/oUlIFKP3Xd — RNC Research (@RNCResearch) March 31, 2023 × The small town of Rolling Fork was hit by a devastating EF4 tornado last Saturday, killing at least 25 people, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. United States President Joe Biden on Friday (March 31) told Russia to release Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich who was arrested by Moscow on espionage charges.

United States President Joe Biden on Friday (March 31) told Russia to release Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich who was arrested by Moscow on espionage charges. “Let him go,” Biden said to reporters at the White House on Friday morning when asked about his message to Russia on the arrest of Gershkovich. Russia's Federal Security Service has accused Evan Gershkovich of trying to obtain classified information. Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg and will be in detention until May 29 pending trial. This is the first time an American journalist has been detained on accusations of spying since the Cold War. ALSO READ | Who is Evan Gershkovich, the US journalist arrested in Russia for espionage On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal's board of opinion editors published a piece where they called for the expulsion of Russia's ambassador to the US and also all Russian journalists working here. "The timing of the arrest looks like a calculated provocation to embarrass the US and intimidate the foreign press still working in Russia," the piece read. Responding to the newspaper's demand for expelling Russian journalists, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the newspaper could say that, but it should not happen. "There's just no reason for this," Peskov added, the news agency AFP reported. The Kremlin spokesperson also said Gershkovich was caught red-handed. US President Biden, meanwhile, said that expelling Russian journalists was not the plan right now. Don't travel to Russia: White House warns Americans Following Evan Gershkovich's arrest, the White House warned Americans not to travel to Russia and also advised those now inside the country to leave for their safety. In a statement, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "The targeting of American citizens by the Russian government is unacceptable. We condemn the detention of Mr Gershkovich in the strongest terms." American officials, meanwhile, said that they were in touch with the journalist's family and the State Department had contacted Russia. US president Joe Biden on Thursday urged banking regulators to reinstate tough rules on mid-sized banks in the United States. The rules, as per AFP, were weakened under his predecessor Donald Trump. Biden said that the revival of the regulations would help prevent future failures like the one Silicon Valley Bank underwent in recent days.

As per a White House fact sheet, Biden urged regulators to consider a set of reforms to "reduce the risk of future banking crises."

The fact sheet, as per AFP, was addressed to "federal banking agencies, in consultation with the Treasury Department" and did not explicitly name the US Federal Reserve or the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

Biden sought for the banks to undergo annual stress tests, as well as "living wills" outlining how assets would be liquidated in the event of failure and stringent capital requirements.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at US President Joe Biden after the latter advised him to abandon his highly-controversial judicial overhaul proposal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at US President Joe Biden after the latter advised him to abandon his highly-controversial judicial overhaul proposal. The Democrat leader, speaking to reporters said he was 'very concerned' about the health of Israeli democracy, issuing a warning that the country cannot continue down this road for long. “Like many strong supporters of Israel, I’m very concerned. And I’m concerned that they get this straight. Hopefully, the prime minister will act in a way that he can try to work out some genuine compromise, but that remains to be seen," said Biden. "I hope he walks away from it." When quizzed if America was looking to interfere in the domestic politics of Israel, Biden added, “We don’t want to interfere...Anyway, we’re not interfering. They know my position. They know America’s position. They know the American Jewish position.” No sooner did Biden have his say, Netanyahu released a response saying Israel would not make decisions based on overseas pressure. By Monday, Netanyahu and his government were forced to press pause on the decision until the next session of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. "Out of a sense of national responsibility, out of a will to prevent a rupture among our people, I have decided to pause the second and third readings of the bill," said Netanyahu in a televised broadcast. And to be coming down, joking about the fact that he’s Jill Biden’s husband and looking for chocolate chip ice cream is hardly the way to start it.”

"There’s no way to talk about something like this except to say that for all of us who are parents, what we dread every day is the news about the health and life of our children," he stated.

United Kingdom's armour-piercing Challenger 2 tanks arrive in Ukraine

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves warned that more storms and severe weather ahead after the devastating tornadoes killed 26 people. Governor Reeves said that many parts of the state are facing significant risks. Hundreds of citizens were displaced due to the tornadoes which tore through Alabama and Mississippi in the United States on Friday night.

The mayor of one of the worst-hit towns said that some of his personal friends were also killed in the natural disaster.

The tornado that came on Friday was the deadliest among all the tornadoes which have hit Mississippi in more than 10 years. Around 25 people lost their lives in the state while one person was confirmed dead in the neighbouring state of Alabama.

Trucks were overturned into houses, trees were uprooted and power lines were broken by the tornado which was classified as “violent”.

Some volunteers came from the neighbouring state of Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas to help the locals in the clean-up operation. A state of emergency was declared by United States President Joe Biden and federal resources were deployed to accelerate the work of rescue and response in some of the towns which were worst hit.

Crews have been working to remove the fallen trees which have pinned down the power lines because of which thousands have been living in darkness since Friday. A few stations have been established outside some buildings which are standing partially for the survivors to collect sandwiches and water.

However, as local communities are working towards providing a swift response, warnings have been issued for the severe storm ahead.

Addressing a press conference held in Rolling Fork, Governor Reeves said, "What we've seen, much like the storm that occurred Friday night, is in the 24-36 hours that are leading up to this afternoon, it appears that the risks seem to be getting worse and worse, not better.”

"And when you stand here and see this, what feels like a beautiful weather day in Mississippi, please be aware and please know: if you are south of I-55 in Mississippi today there are significant risks. We are prepared,” he added.

The governor stated that it was "heartbreaking" to see the devastation and loss caused by the tornadoes, however, he added that he was "damn proud to be a Mississippian" after seeing how swiftly locals responded to the disaster.

"Because Mississippians have done what Mississippians do. In times of tragedy, in times of crisis, they stand up and they show up, and they're here to help themselves, help their neighbours,” he said.

Mississippi braces for more storms after being routed by devastating tornado

The United States opens its second Summit for Democracy on Tuesday where it will be seeking a united front against authoritarianism in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and China launching the diplomatic offensive.

US President Joe Biden had taken the office with a pledge to champion democracy and made a good start in the first year with the inaugural summit which was aimed at reaffirming the leadership of the country after the democratic norms were eroded by his predecessor Donald Trump with the attack on the Capitol.

This year, considering the concerns about too much US navel-gazing in the first edition, Biden has brought in co-hosts on each continent - the presidents of South Korea, Zambia and Costa Rica and the prime minister of The Netherlands.

In total, 121 leaders have been invited by Biden for the three-day summit, which will mostly be held virtually.

The summit is taking place as threats to democracy evolve "from what was seen as an important issue, albeit sort of a slow-moving threat, to one that is now both important and extremely urgent," stated Marti Flacks, director of human rights initiative at Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

The session will bring together representatives of civil society for discussions on various challenges to democracy which include surveillance technology, which has been seen as a growing threat by the United States as China continues to make rapid advances in technology.

"In the absence of pending congressional action in that space, it is important that the administration is engaging bilaterally with other countries and also with companies on voluntary actions that can be taken in the interim," Flacks added.

The summit will start on Tuesday with a virtual conversation on the issue of peace which will feature Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Biden says China has not delivered arms to Russia yet, but it ‘doesn’t mean they won’t’

A suspected Iranian-made drone killed a US contractor and wounded six other Americans in north-east Syria on Thursday. US forces retaliated with airstrikes on sites in Syria used by groups affiliated with Iran’s revolutionary guard. Now, the US president has warned Iran after tit-for-tat strikes. Biden said the US would respond forcefully to protect its personnel.

The United States and Canada on Friday pledged to stand together against authoritarian regimes "both at home and abroad." The vow was taken as US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met during the former's visit to Canada. As per Reuters, the two nations will fulfil this pledge in part by reducing their dependence on other countries, including "an increasingly assertive China" for critical minerals and semiconductors. Speaking to the Canadian parliament in Ottawa, the American President said he believes that Canada and US can work together to create "reliable and resilient supply chains," and that the "shared prosperity" of the two nations is connected to their "shared security."

"I believe we have an incredible opportunity to work together, so Canada and the United States can source and supply here in North America everything we need for reliable and resilient supply chains," said Biden adding that as NATO members, the two countries would "defend every inch of NATO territory".

Also speaking at the parliament, Trudeau said that the United States and Canada must work together to build a North American market on everything from semiconductors to solar panel batteries.

"With growing competition, including from an increasingly assertive China, there's no doubt why it matters that we turn to each other now to build up a North American market on everything from semiconductors to solar panel batteries," he said.

Reuters reports that while Canada already has an "abundance" of critical minerals used in the production of batteries and electric vehicles (EVs), China currently dominates the global market.

The Canadian leader expressed unity with the United States in supporting Ukraine and said that the two allies must continue "to face down authoritarian threats, both at home and abroad."
