US President Joe Biden on Wednesday wished Muslims across the world 'Ramadan Kareem' as the holy month of fasting began. However, surprising many, Biden expressed solidarity with China's embattled 'Uyghur' minority population facing an existential crisis. "Today, Jill and I extend our best wishes to Muslim communities across the country and around the world as they begin the Islamic holy month of Ramadan - a time of fasting, renewal, charity, worship and growth," said Biden in the address. "Together with our partners, the United States stands in solidarity with Muslims who continue to face oppression, including Uyghurs in the People's Republic of China, Rohingya in Burma, and other Muslim communities facing persecution around the world," he added. Biden mentioning the Uyghur Muslims comes at a time when relations between Washington and Beijing are at an all-time low. If the spy balloon saga had barely died down, the recent visit to Russia by Chinese President Xi Jinping has further driven the wedge between the relations. For a long time, China has been accused by the western world, especially the US of undertaking a genocide of the Uyghur Muslim populace in the Xinjiang province. In a report released by the UN last year, China's actions in Xinjiang were dubbed as 'crimes against humanity'. The report had been in the works for years and was released despite Chinese efforts to delay or block it. Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery will take several years, cost $411 billion: World Bank

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said that China has not 'crossed the line' and provided Russia with substantial aid despite it ramping up diplomatic aid to Moscow. Blinken, who as per AFP, has for weeks warned that Beijing is considering Russia's request for weapons for the Ukraine war said that "as we speak today, we have not seen them cross that line." He said this in response to a question on whether China was providing "lethal aid" to Russia. Talking to lawmakers at a Senate committee, the top diplomat as per Reuters said that China was "very carefully" watching how Washington and the world respond to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken said that if Russia was allowed to attack Ukraine with impunity, it would "open a Pandora's box" for would-be aggressors and lead to a "world of conflict."

US President Joe Biden on Monday used his veto power for the first time and overrode a Republican-led bill that, as per AFP, would have barred retirement fund asset managers from taking into account environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors. United States President Joe Biden is planning to host a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this summer at the White House, said a Bloomberg report citing unnamed Washington officials.

The state dinner might take place in either June or July, but there is no confirmation on the timing. An official comment in this regard is awaited.

If it takes place, this will be the third dinner for President Biden, after the one he hosted for French President Emmanuel Macron in December, and the other one for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol scheduled for April 26.

The formal state visit reflects the further strengthening of the US-India relationship, which has taken new heights recently as the Biden administration shifts focus towards for a free Indo-Pacific to counter China’s growing influence.

Biden and Modi are also scheduled to meet in India for the G20 summit in September in the capital New Delhi, where the topic of discussion will largely veer towards the Russia-Ukraine war.

Though there is no official confirmation whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the gathering, Bloomberg, quoting Russian officials, earlier this month reported that the summit will likely see the attendance of the 70-year-old leader.

Both leaders are also expected to meet in Australia in May at the Quad summit along with the leaders of Australia and Japan.

Last Friday, India and the US on Friday signed a pact on setting up a semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership in India, and establishing a semiconductor sub-committee under the framework of the India-US Commercial Dialogue.

The cooperation on semiconductors comes against the backdrop of the shortage of such chips, which had serious consequences and caused supply disruption in automobiles and electronics in both countries, particularly after the outbreak of COVID-19.

Biden jokes he’s ‘really not Irish’ as he marks St Patrick’s Day with Irish PM

A Delaware computer repair shop owner is being sued by Hunter Biden, the US president's son, over the handling of his personal laptop. The hard disc of the laptop, according to Biden and his counsel, was unlawfully duplicated and distributed by John Paul Mac Isaac, reported the BBC.

During the 2020 presidential race, Republicans utilised such private information to discredit Joe Biden.

Isaac contends that when the laptop was abandoned, it became his property.

In a lawsuit he filed last year, Isaac claimed Hunter Biden, the Biden 2020 campaign, a Democratic lawmaker, and two US media publications had defamed him by saying he had obtained the material unlawfully.

In his lawsuit, Hunter Biden contends that Isaac supplied his information to "political enemies" because he opposed his father's campaign. The counterclaim was submitted on Friday in a Delaware district court.

The Joe Biden administration on Monday approved an Alaska oil project or the Willow Project, which intends for extensive oil drilling on the North Slope, and has sparked anger among environmentalists. The announcement comes a day after the administration, in a big conservation move, said that it would bar or limit drilling in some other areas of Alaska or the Arctic Ocean. The decision approved by Rep. Mary Peltola was hailed by the Alaska delegation, saying that the "people of Alaska were heard." US Senator Lisa Murkowski also applauded the move, saying, "We did it, Alaska!"

But what exactly is the Willow Project? Why are the environmentalists angry? Scroll to read the details:

What is the Willow Project?

Alaska's significant and long-lasting oil drilling project on the National Petroleum Reserve's North Slope a.k.a the 'Willow Project' was proposed by Conoco Phillips, which aims to produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day, about 1.5 per cent of the US total oil production, CNN reported.

Alaska Republican Dan Sullivan said this oil development could be one of the biggest and most important resource development projects in history.

The company proposed five drilling initiatives as part of the project. However, the US Bureau of Land Management approved three drill sites, which ConocoPhillips Alaska said was a viable option. The interior department added that the final approval reduces the project's drill pads by probably 40 per cent.

The company further agreed to give up its rights to about 68,000 acres in existing leaves within the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The move reduces the project's freshwater use and eliminates all infrastructure related to the two rejected drills.

Is Joe Biden in trouble?

As soon as US President Joe Biden approved Alaska's oil project, it turned environmentalists and many US Democrats in Congress against him, who said that the project is out of step with his goals, CBS News reported.

Environmentalists have argued that approval of such a project represents a "betrayal" by Biden and his administration, who promised during his 2020 election campaign that fighting climate change will be his top priority and ending all new oil and gas drilling on federal lands and to move to clear energy.

Environmental activists have launched a #StopWillowcampaign across all social media platforms, seeking to remind Biden of his pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Federal officials have claimed that an increase in domestic oil drilling would result in fewer net global emissions because it would decrease petroleum imports.

The latest review under the Biden administration received backlash over its inclusion of a suggestion that 50 per cent of Willow's net emission could be offset by planting more trees in national forests to capture and store carbon dioxide."

Who supports and opposes the oil project?

Other than state lawmakers who say that the project will increase employment, boost domestic production and lessen the country's dependency, a coalition of native groups in Alaska also supports the project. According to them, the project is a much-needed source of revenue in the region and funds services like education and healthcare.

However, some Alaska Natives living closer to the planned project raised their concerns about the health and environmental impacts of the development.

In a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Nuiqsut Mayor Rosemary Ahtuangaruak and other officials said that the village will bear the consequences of the harmful project. The letter read, "We are at ground zero for the industrialisation of the Arctic.

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed an executive order which will increase the background checks before the purchase of guns and promote the use of “red flag” laws.

The new policy was unveiled by the president in Monterey Park, California where a gunman had opened fire in January during a Lunar New Year celebration, killing 11 people.

While addressing the immigrant community in Monterey Park, Biden recalled the brave act put up by a karaoke-singing grandmother when the shootout took place.

Biden appealed to Congress to take "responsibility" and to clamp down on semi-automatic, military-style rifles which are being mostly used in mass shootings.

"Ban assault weapons. Do it now. Enough! Do something. Do something big,” he said.

Tougher background checks

Among the various measures enacted by Biden on Tuesday, the most important was the executive order to tighten background check rules.

The orders issued by Biden directed the attorney general to clamp down on vendors who are selling guns without carrying out proper checks and also specify who qualifies as a dealer.

The rule "directs my attorney general to take every lawful action possible to move us as close as we can to universal background checks without new legislation," said Biden. "It's just common sense - to check whether someone is a felon or a domestic abuser before they buy a gun," he added.

Biden added that his executive order will lead to an independent study which will expose "how gun manufacturers aggressively market firearms to civilians, especially minors, including by using military imagery.”

Official reports with names of firearms dealers violating laws will also be released by the attorney general.

The tactic of name and shame will help lawmakers "crack down on those illegal dealers and the public can avoid purchasing from them," said Biden.

US President Joe Biden guaranteed to release an executive order to reinforce the background check for gun buyers. The White House promoted the upcoming decision as the 'most comprehensive policy' announced by the US President without needing the approval of Congress. It will support federal laws for gun sales to people, passed in 19 states and Columbia. Furthermore, it will follow the previous executive actions taken by the Biden government to reduce gun violence in the United States. According to the White House, Biden will discuss the order during his meeting with gun violence victims in Monterey Park, California. The place witnessed an open fire by a shooter who killed 11 people and injured nine others on January 21, 2023. The United States witnesses 40,000 gun death every year. In this case, US President Joe Biden believes that citizens of this country will embrace more proactive gun control. The Biden administration referred to the public opinion that showed the American majority supporting background checks. The President will direct the Attorney General to publicly release the ATF or Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives records from firearms dealers inspection cited for violating federal firearm laws. Biden, who has previously called gun violence in America "an epidemic" and "international embarrassment," will further order efforts to dispute a sharp elevation in the loss or theft of guns during shipping. Joe Biden's executive order on background checks to reduce gun violence in the United States Here are some highlights of the executive order on background checkers by Joe Biden to reduce gun violence in the United States. It appeals to increase the background check numbers and ensure that the authorities run all background checks required by law before firearm purchases. It suggests improving public awareness and increasing the appropriate use of extreme risk protection red flag orders and safe firearm storage. Russian mercenary group Wagner’s chief reveals ‘political ambitions’, to run for Ukraine’s president in 2024

The US Air Force on Friday (March 10) discarded the colour palette chosen by former president Donald Trump for Air Force One and unveiled a new colour scheme for the presidential aircraft. President Joe Biden is going ahead with a classic blue-and-white colour scheme for the jets which are under construction. This means that the design that dates back to John Kennedy administration will be retained.

Former president Trump, who left office in January 2021, wanted a bolder red, white and blue design, and kept a scale model bearing those colors on a coffee table in the Oval Office.

Trump's design called for a deep red stripe down the middle of the aircraft and a dark blue underbelly.

The colours presented challenges to engineers, however, and a Friday statement from the secretary of the Air Force cited possible delays and tests to deal with "the added heat" from the darker shade of blue.

The new Air Force One aircraft will instead closely resemble the aging current one, although the light blue will be a "more modern tone" than the existing robin's egg blue, and there will be no polished metal on the fuselage "because modern commercial aircraft skin alloys don't allow for it," it said.

The replacement aircraft are projected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028, so the winner of the 2024 elections will be the first to take off in the new jets.

The Boeing aircraft are not like commercial airliners. Each includes high-tech communication facilities, a medical bay and a self-defence system.

President Biden junks Air Force One paint scheme chosen by predecessor Trump

US President Joe Biden is poised to decide whether to pull the plug on a massive oil drilling project on Alaska's North Slope or allow it to go ahead.

With the decision imminent, environmentalists have ramped up pressure on the White House, urging Biden to live up to the climate change pledges he made during his campaign.

During the 2020 presidential race, the Democratic candidate vowed not to approve any new leases for oil and gas projects on federal lands.

But Biden has found himself stuck in the middle of a years-long battle over the so-called Willow Project, a plan by US energy giant ConocoPhillips to drill for oil in the federally owned National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska's pristine western Arctic.

The Trump administration approved the Willow Project at the tail end of the former president's term but it was blocked by a judge for further review.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in an environmental impact analysis in February, approved three drilling sites while striking down one and deferring consideration of another.

ConocoPhillips welcomed the BLM's assessment, saying it can "provide a viable path forward for development of our leasehold."

The Interior Department, which oversees the BLM, said, however, it has "substantial concerns," about the project "including direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and impacts to wildlife and Alaska Native subsistence."

Biden has described global warming as an existential threat and promoted the development of renewable energy sources.

Temperatures in Alaska have been rising faster than in other regions of the planet and environmental groups have warned that the oil extraction project would make things worse.

The Willow Project will add more than 250 million metric tons of carbon emissions to the atmosphere over the next 30 years, the Sierra Club said, equivalent to the annual emissions of 66 coal plants.

Greenpeace described it as a "carbon bomb."

A petition on Change.org seeking to halt the project has garnered more than three million signatures and a #StopWillow campaign on TikTok has drawn 150 million views.

180,000 barrels of oil per day

Backers of the Willow Project defend it as a source of several thousand jobs and a contributor to US energy independence with the production of 180,000 barrels of oil per day at its peak or some 576 million barrels over 30 years.

Alaska's two Republican senators and the state's sole member of the House, Mary Peltola, a native Alaskan and a Democrat, met with Biden last week to urge him to approve the project.

"We hope the President will listen to the voices of indigenous Alaskans who live on the North Slope, the voices of labour leaders and union workers who are ready to help build Alaska's economy (and) listen to the voices of national security officials underscoring the importance of Willow for American energy security," they said.

Peltola, in an opinion piece published in The Hill, said Alaskans "aren't blind to the impacts of climate change" but the Willow Project can serve as a bridge as the country transitions away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources.

"At the same time, we can reduce America's dependence on foreign sources of oil — which makes us all safer in a world that has grown more unpredictable after Russia invaded Ukraine," Peltola said.

Biden has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 compared with 2005 with the goal of achieving a net zero emissions economy by no later than 2050.

To drill or not to drill: President Joe Biden to make decision on Alaska oil project

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (March 9) unveiled the government's spending plans in Pennsylvania, announcing higher taxes on the rich.

While speaking at the Philadelphia union hall, the president questioned the Republican opposition over the issue of fiscal responsibility, as he highlighted plans to deduct the deficit of the nation by nearly $3 trillion in 10 years by increasing taxes on those who have an income of more than $400,000 a year.

The budget, overall, would increase federal spending in the coming 12 months to $6.8 trillion.

"For too long, working people been breaking their necks, the economy's left them behind - working people like you - while those at the top get away with everything," Biden said while addressing the Pennsylvania blue-collar workers, a group which was targeted by him in his 2020 presidential campaign.

"No billionaire should paying a lower tax than somebody working as a school teacher or a firefighter," he added.

The budget proposed by Biden is facing stiff opposition from Republican lawmakers who are emboldened after winning control of the House of Representatives in November's midterm elections.

However, the plan is a political statement trying to directly challenge the threats given by Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to block an increase in the federal borrowing's limit of $31.4 trillion till Biden agrees to rein in federal spending.

"I want to make it clear I'm ready to meet with the speaker anytime, tomorrow if he has his budget. Lay it down, tell me what you want to do. I'll show you what I want to do, see what we can agree on," said Biden.

“I have created 12 million jobs in two years - more than any other president in American history. Any country that out-educates us will out-compete us. Our education system was more efficient than any other now the rest of the world has caught up. We want the best-educated workforce for our country. We are working for better opportunities,” he added.

“We have had the best infra and economy in the world but now the rest of the world has caught up and we are lagging behind. 1.2 trillion dollars will be spent by the government in a span of 10 years for infra revamp,” Biden further stated.

"My budget reflects what we can do to lift the burden on hard-working Americans. My budget plan is going to give people a fighting chance. Too many people have been left behind and treated like they're invisible. Not anymore. I promise you: I see you," said Biden.

Biden's budget plan was described by McCarthy and other Republicans as "a reckless proposal".

Biden unveils $6.8 trillion budget plan, raises taxes for wealthy citizens

US President Joe Biden on Thursday (March 9) proposed spending of more than USD 25 billion, mostly to be spent in the Indo-Pacific region with an eye on growing Chinese assertiveness. The huge expenditure will be focussed at critical infrastructure sector and defence sector.

The proposed expenditure includes over USD 15 billion of proposed investment in the infrastructure sector in the Indo-Pacific and USD 9 billion for shoring up American defence in the region.

“This Budget cements our commitment to confronting global challenges and keeping America safe. It outlines crucial investments to out-compete China globally and to continue support for Ukraine in the face of unprovoked Russian aggression,” Biden said in his message to the Congress.

Biden said it also continues his administration’s work to restore America’s global leadership – reviving key alliances and partnerships, strengthening the military, fostering democracy and human rights, protecting global health, honouring the veterans, fixing immigration systems at home, and advancing cybersecurity through implementation of the National Cybersecurity Strategy.

China is the United States’ only competitor with both the intent to reshape the international order and, increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military, and technological power to do it, according to Biden’s budgetary proposals sent to the Congress Thursday noon.

During these unprecedented and extraordinary times, the Budget requests both discretionary and mandatory resources to out-compete China and advance American prosperity globally, the White House said.

United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Fox News' attempt to play down the seriousness of the Capitol attack that took place on January 6, 2021, after a mob of Donald Trump's supporters gathered outside the Congress.

"More than 140 officers were injured on Jan 6. I've said before: How dare anyone diminish or deny the hell they went through?" tweeted Biden. "I hope House Republicans feel ashamed for what was done to undermine our law enforcement,” he said.

Biden extended his support to the Capitol Hill police, whose chief has claimed that Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson manipulated the video footage of the Capitol attack after Trump faced defeat in the elections.

We're all pretending we've got a lot to show for it, because admitting what a disaster it's been is too tough to digest. But come on. There isn't really an upside to Trump,” he added. Biden slams Republicans for playing down Jan 6 Capitol attack

Former Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti's nomination as US ambassador to India was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a 13-8 vote. The nomination will now head to the Senate floor for a full vote.

Todd Young and Bill Hagerty, the two Republican Senators, joined the Democrats and voted in favour of Garcetti as the key senatorial committee passed his name for the second time in as many years.

"We did see the action on the part of the Senate today. We heartily applaud that. US needs a confirmed Ambassador in India. Our team on the ground, including Charge d' Affaires, who have served in the place of an ambassador, have done extraordinary work," said Ned Price, US State Department spokesperson after the confirmation.

With the Democrats gaining an advantage in the Senate after the November midterm elections, hopes have rekindled that Garcetti will earn his confirmation soon. He was renominated by President Joe Biden in January.

Garcetti's name was first proposed in July 2021, a few months after Biden took office. However, since then, Garcetti has not been able to receive approval from the US Senate, primarily due to a sexual harassment controversy.

The Democrat leader had served as Biden's co-chair during the presidential election campaign. He is still one of Biden's most significant political allies and at one time, he was seen as a potential part of the president's cabinet. However, the controversy proved to be a spanner in the job.

The bilateral relations between the two countries are at a crucial juncture. The absence of a full-time envoy can have a negative impact as the ambassador acts as a bridge between the top hierarchy of the two countries during critical periods.

Usually, the absence of an ambassador is seen as a downgrade in ties. Countries often show displeasure over policy issues to foreign nations by recalling their envoys.

Eric Garcetti, Biden's choice for ambassador to India, approved by key Senate committee

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called on U.S. President Joe Biden to allow Novak Djokovic to compete at this month's Miami Open despite the world number one being unvaccinated for COVID-19. Djokovic, one of the most high-profile athletes unvaccinated against the virus, applied to the U.S. government last month for special permission to play at ATP Masters events Indian Wells, which begins on Wednesday, and the March 19-April 2 Miami Open.

The Serbian, 35, formally withdrew from Indian Wells on Sunday. Florida Senator Rick Scott said that U.S. officials had denied Djokovic's request. "This denial is unfair, unscientific and unacceptable," DeSantis wrote in a letter to Biden on Tuesday. "I urge you to reconsider. It's time to put pandemic politics aside and give the American people what they want - let him play."

Republican DeSantis signed a law in November 2021 banning schools, businesses and government entities from requiring vaccination against COVID-19, drawing condemnation from health experts and Democratic leaders. The U.S. currently bars unvaccinated foreigners from entry into the country, a policy that is expected to be lifted when the government ends its COVID-19 emergency declarations on May 11.

Djokovic, who missed last year's Australian Open after being deported from that country due to his vaccination status, has said he would skip Grand Slams rather than have a COVID shot. He won his record-tying 22nd Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. He has not played at Indian Wells or the Miami Open - which together comprise the "Sunshine Double" - since 2019.

Last week, Scott and fellow Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida also wrote to Biden urging him to grant the waiver request. Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas, the United States Tennis Association and the U.S. Open were among those also hoping Djokovic would be allowed to enter.

"The only thing keeping Mr Djokovic from participating in this tournament is your administration's continued enforcement of a misguided, unscientific, and out-of-date COVID-19 vaccination requirement for foreign guests," DeSantis said.
