US President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy will meet on Tuesday to make progress on a deal to raise the US government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling. The meeting will be aimed at averting what the experts have cautioned as an economically catastrophic default that may become a reality amid the ongoing debt ceiling deadlock.

Meanwhile, the US Treasury Department on Monday reiterated its warning that it could run short of money to pay all its bills as soon as June 1. This, the department added, would trigger a default which is likely to spark a sharp economic downturn.

"We can raise the debt ceiling if we limit what we're going to spend in the future," McCarthy told reporters.

US debt ceiling crisis

Biden and Republican leaders have started high-stakes talks Tuesday aimed at countering a potentially catastrophic US debt default, but Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned ahead of the talks that the US could default on its debts as early as June 1.

The Treasury has warned of "catastrophic" implications if the nation runs out of funds to pay its debts, which would leave it unable to pay government employees and trigger a likely rise in interest rates, which would have a significant impact on businesses and mortgage holders.

In a letter to the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, she said, "We still estimate Treasury will likely no longer be able to satisfy all of the government's obligations if Congress has not acted to raise or suspend the debt limit by early June, and potentially as early as June 1."

Both, Biden and McCarthy, have blamed the other side for the failure to make progress in the first round of discussions last week.

McCarthy told reporters at the US Capitol on Tuesday, "We've got to solve the problem. I just want to get in the room and work out the challenge here and come to an agreement."

But Biden accused the Republican Party of holding the economy hostage. He said, "America cannot default on its debt. If we were to do that it would be catastrophic. It would be devastating for America and quite frankly the whole world."

A year after launching the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), the two countries will conduct the inaugural meeting of Strategic Trade Dialogue next month to implement the outcomes of the initiative. The meeting, expected to take place on June 4-5, will attempt to streamline export controls, enhance high-tech commerce and facilitate tech transfer between the two countries. It was in May last year during the Quad Summit that the initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden. The main aim of the initiative was to elevate and expand strategic technology partnership and defence-industrial cooperation between the governments. In January this year, the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of the two countries met and led the inaugural dialogue of the iCET in Washington, DC. "The two sides discussed opportunities for greater cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, co-development and coproduction, and ways to deepen connectivity across our innovation ecosystems," read a statement released by the White House at the time. Later in March, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visited India and met his counterpart Piyush Goyal as the duo announced relaunching the bilateral commercial dialogue. "Minister Goyal and Secretary Raimondo noted the importance of coordinating with the standing mechanism established by the two governments under iCET, which aims to address regulatory barriers and other issues that impede smooth economic and commercial ties," read the joint statement. Biden to host Modi The announcement of the meeting comes in the backdrop of the White House announcing that President Biden will be hosting PM Modi on June 22. "President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India for an Official State Visit to the United States, which will include a state dinner, on June 22, 2023. The upcoming visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together, " announced Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement. Since the United States Title 42 migration policy ended, the nation's border authorities, as per the US homeland security chief, have witnessed a fifty per cent drop in "encounters" with undocumented migrants crossing the southern border.

Talking to CNN during a talk show, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said that the US Border Patrol has seen a marked reduction in the number of crossings over the past two days since the end of the policy.

"Over the past two days, the United States border patrol has experienced a 50 per cent drop in the number of encounters, versus what we were experiencing earlier in the week."

Nevertheless, he cautioned that "we are in Day Three," and that it is "too early" to predict the flow of future border crossings.

However, Representative Mark Green, the Republican chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in the House of Representatives, has disputed the figures, saying that more people crossed the border this week than at any other time in US history. Green attributed this to a surge in people crossing the border ahead of Title 42's end.

"This week has seen more crossings than any week in our history," he told CNN.

However, that power ended last Thursday with the government's declaration that Covid-19 is no longer an official public health emergency, reports AFP.

The country has now reverted to its previous immigration law, called Title 8.

At the same time, Joe Biden's administration is also attempting to create a system which allows for expanded asylum and legal routes in some cases. However, it will also come with strict penalties for those who cross the border illegally, including five-year bans on entering the US and possible criminal charges.

The Biden administration was initially prepared for a surge in border crossings ahead of the end of Title 42 and deployed troops to the border. Nevertheless, Mayorkas said that approximately 6,300 people crossed the border on Friday, with 4,200 crossing on Saturday.

He described these figures as "markedly down" compared to the 10,000 per day who crossed earlier in the week.

"Over the past two days, the United States border patrol has experienced a 50 per cent drop in the number of encounters, versus what we were experiencing earlier in the week." However, Representative Mark Green, the Republican chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in the House of Representatives, has disputed the figures, saying that more people crossed the border this week than at any other time in US history. Green attributed this to a surge in people crossing the border ahead of Title 42's end. "This week has seen more crossings than any week in our history," he told CNN. In a rare announcement of its losses on the battlefield, Russia on Sunday said that two of its military commanders had been killed in combat near the frontline hotspot of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. The nation also disclosed that its forces have struck Western arm depots and Ukrainian troops in the western city of Ternopil and the eastern town of Petropavlivka, reports AFP.

As per a Russian defence ministry statement published by the nation's news agencies, Russia's armed forces "delivered a strike with high-precision long-range air and sea-based weapons at the points of deployment of the Ukrainian armed forces."

"Places of storage of ammunition, weapons and military equipment received from Western countries," were also struck, it said.

Last year, the nation's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, in an equally rare announcement, stated that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed in Ukraine. Russia's rare announcement of battlefield losses: Two commanders killed in Ukraine's Bakhmut

The United States is reportedly close to finalising a major defence deal with Papua New Guinea that will allow its armed forces to access the Pacific country’s ports and airports—a move that is being seen as a counter to China’s growing influence in the Pacific region.

According to Nikkei Asia, the deal will be signed when United States President Joe Biden visits Papua New Guinea after the Group of Seven's May 19-21 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

Biden will meet Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and other Pacific Island leaders, where they will "discuss ways to deepen cooperation on challenges critical to the region and to the United States such as combating climate change, protecting maritime resources, and advancing resilient and inclusive economic growth," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement this week.

The report, quoting officials familiar with the negotiations, noted that the deal would allow US troops to use certain facilities and areas in Papua New Guinea on the condition that they mutually agree.

The potential locations that are being discussed include Momote Airport, Jacksons International Airport, Nadzab Airport, Lombrum Naval Base, the Seaport of Lae and Port Moresby, according to the report.

US and China have been one-upping each other in a bid to grow influence in the Pacific region.

For US, Papua New Guinea is a key strategic area as it is located at the southern tip of the so-called second island chain, which includes Japan's Ogasawara Islands and the US territory of Guam.

It comes after China signed a major security pact with another Pacific country Solomon Islands in April 2022.

US believes that China may eventually establish a base there or use it as a resupply point and expand its range of activity close to the second island chain.

A state-backed Chinese company has won a contract to develop the international port in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara.

Apart from the US, Papua New Guinea is also being courted by Beijing. Marape was invited to Beijing later this year, while Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the country in 2018.

For its part, the US last year hosted the first ever US-Pacific Island summit in Washington, DC, an event attended by Marape and other Pacific Island Forum leaders. The Biden administration has also sought to re-up security agreements with an array of Pacific island nations.

As per a report by the Russian news outlet Kommersant, four Russian military aircraft, including two fighter jets and two military helicopters, were shot down near the Ukrainian border on Saturday. The incident reportedly occurred in the Bryansk region, close to northeast Ukraine, and, if confirmed, would be a significant victory for Kyiv.

As per the report published on the Kommersant website, the raiding party reportedly comprised a Su-34 fighter bomber, a Su-35 fighter, and two Mi-8 helicopters.

The aircraft were reportedly "shot down almost simultaneously" in the ambush. The fighter jets were allegedly intended to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in Ukraine's Chernihiv region, with the helicopters providing backup support and recovery for the fighter jet crews.

Kommersant claims that all four crews were killed in the incident.

"According to preliminary data ... the fighters were supposed to deliver a missile and bomb attack on targets in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, and the helicopters were there to back them up - among other things to pick up the 'Su' crews if they were shot down."

Although Kommersant did not provide any evidence for the downing of four aircraft, other pro-war military bloggers have also made similar claims.

The Russian defence ministry is yet to make a statement about the crash or the alleged ambush.

However, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian Su-34 warplane has crashed in the Bryansk region. The report did not mention the cause of the crash.

Citing emergency services, TASS also reported that a helicopter had crashed near Klintsy — about 40km (25 miles) from the border — due to an engine fire. It made no mention of a second helicopter or the Su-35.

However, as per Reuters, a video posted on the Russian pro-war Telegram channel Voyenniy Osvedomitel appeared to show a helicopter exploding in mid-air, being thrown off course, and then plunging towards the ground in flames. The video's comment section reportedly suggest that the helicopter, a Mi-8, was shot down by a missile, which led to its crash.

The Biden administration on Friday started the implementation of a significant policy shift at the US-Mexico border. Starting May 13, Title 42, a COVID-era order that had allowed the swift expulsion of many migrants expired, and new asylum restrictions took effect.

As per Reuters, adding to the confusion and uncertainty, were several last-minute actions. These legal challenges have added to the questions about how Biden's new strategy will play out.

The end of Title 42, a three-year-old order that allowed American authorities to expel migrants to Mexico or other countries quickly without a chance to request asylum, has raised concerns that US border facilities could be strained to the breaking point.

Officials are reportedly keeping a close eye on the movement of migrants.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official Blas Nunez-Neto told reporters on Friday that they "continue to encounter high levels of non-citizens at the border, but we did not see a substantial increase overnight or an influx at midnight (when Title 42 expired)."

New asylum restrictions put in place by President Joe Biden's administration to curb illegal crossings were met with criticism from immigration advocates.

Advocates represented by the American Civil Liberties Union filed a legal challenge against the new asylum bars, claiming they violate US and international laws.

They argue that Biden's new legislation resembles the restrictions imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump — these were blocked in the court.

However, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden regulation. Talking to MSNBC, he said it aims to encourage migrants to enter using legal pathways.

Biden's new measures, as per ABC News, have stopped short of imposing a total ban and instead, put in place severe limitations for those seeking to cross illegally without first opting for legal routes.

Joe Biden’s ‘Title 42’ transition faces roadblocks, immigration advocates say new asylum bars violate laws

US President Joe Biden has drawn criticism from a lawmaker of Northern Ireland's biggest pro-UK party on Thursday (May 11) over his contentious remarks. Biden has said that the purpose of his trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland was "to make sure... the Brits didn't screw around" with peace in Northern Ireland and "didn't walk away from their commitments".

The comments, relayed in a White House transcript, came as Biden addressed a Democratic party gathering in New York on Wednesday.

"If you believe that there should be a special relationship between the US and UK then at least show us some respect," said Sammy Wilson, Northern Irish lawmaker from the country's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He was quoted by London's Evening Standard newspaper.

"It's unbelievable and frightening as well to think this is the man who is the leader of the free world," he added.

The DUP is a pro-UK party and wants Northern Ireland part of the UK. It is currently boycotting the region's power-sharing government over strong disagreements on post-Brexit trade.

A renegotiation of the trade protocol by the EU and UK -- labelled the Windsor Framework -- was largely aimed at remedying unionist concerns that it put Northern Ireland's position in the UK under threat. But the deal has so far been spurned by the DUP.

UK PM Rishi Sunak's spokesperson, when asked about Biden's remarks, said that the framework is "a culmination of substantive work between the UK and the EU".

"And at its heart the UK priority was always protecting the Good Friday Agreement," he told reporters.

Under Sunak's predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, the UK's hardline tactics with the EU had drawn warnings from Washington that peace in Northern Ireland could be undermined.

Biden's words found backing from Mary Lou McDonald, president of the Sinn Fein party which wants Irish reunification.

The US position has consistently been "to oppose very vigorously anything that would threaten to undermine either the peace or the Good Friday Agreement", she said.

"So I think President Biden in his own way is simply reiterating a position which has been very clear for a long time." Northern Ireland lawmaker slams Joe Biden’s remarks on the country

On Thursday midnight, the Trump-era ‘Title 42’ rule—imposed during the pandemic to expel those entering the country unlawfully—expired, paving the way for more tougher regulations to take effect.

Hours before, thousands of immigrants rushed to the US-Mexico in a desperate attempt to seek asylum even as additional troops were deployed to the border to tackle the influx.

“Starting tonight, people who arrive at the border without using a lawful pathway will be presumed ineligible for asylum. We are ready to humanely process and remove people without a legal basis to remain in the US," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

"The border is not open," he added. "People who do not use available lawful pathways to enter the US now face tougher consequence."

It is uncertain how many are looking to cross the border, but border patrol officers peg the number anywhere upwards of 60,000.

Speaking to CBS News, Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said his agency is preparing for some of the tens of thousands of migrants currently on the Mexican side of the US-Mexico border once Title 42 expires on Thursday at 11.59 pm ET (local time)

"Upwards of 60,000 migrants we project are staging in and around the immediate border area," Ortiz told CBS News in El Paso.

"So, we're focused on ensuring that we're doing everything we can to allocate resources to address those flows."

Gravitas: Controversial U.S. Immigration policy Title 42 ends

Title 42 was imposed in March 2020, in which many border crossers were expelled to Mexico without a chance to seek asylum, leading to repeat attempts.

President Joe Biden, after assuming office, continued with the policy, but faced massive criticism from all corners, following which he decided to end the rule and came up with more stringent regulations that seek to curb illegal crossovers. The rule was first announced in February.

The new regulation, which will come into effect once Title 42 is lifted, will deny asylum to almost all migrants who cross illegally. They will not only be allowed to return for five years, but also can face criminal prosecution if they try to.

Moreover, it will bar anyone who has passed through another country without seeking refuge elsewhere or who failed to use legal pathways to enter the United States.

In 2019, Donald Trump looked to impose similar but stricter measures, but a federal appeals court prevented it from taking effect.

More personnel deployed to border

According to local news reports, around 24,000 enforcement officers are guarding the 1,951-mile (3,140-kilometer) border with Mexico. Moreover, at least 1,500 active-duty military troops are being deployed to back up US Customs and Border Protection. And 2,500 National Guard troops are already there, tasked to help out CBP.

On Tuesday, Biden said that his administration was working to make the change orderly. "But it remains to be seen," he told reporters. "It's going to be chaotic for a while."

Thousands of migrants rush to US-Mexico border as Title 42 rule ends

President Joe Biden's administration is lifting Title 42, the strict protocol implemented by the previous president Donald Trump. Title 42 denied entry to migrants and expelled asylum seekers based on the covid pandemic emergency. Title 42 allowed border agents to rapidly turn back many migrants to Mexico without a chance to ask for asylum. Joe Biden, a Democrat, took office in 2021, vowing to reverse Trump's approach. However, he kept Title 42 in place and expanded it. US immigration processing now reverts to a pre-existing system, known as Title 8, but with new, much more stringent rules for asylum seekers. The Biden administration is now turning away anyone seeking asylum who didn’t first seek protection in a country they travelled through, or first applied online. US officials plan to open 100 regional migration hubs across the western hemisphere, where people can seek placement in another country, including Canada and Spain. There will be hubs in Colombia and Guatemala too.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti presented his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the capital New Delhi and has officially assumed charge.

After meeting the Indian president, Garcetti said he would focus on raising the bilateral partnership to “new heights”, with both countries working together on “defining issues” of the time.

“The #USIndia partnership is vital, strong, and filled with opportunity. The bond between our countries and people's runs deep. Proud to be at the helm of the US Mission to India advancing #USIndiaTogether!” Garcetti posted on Twitter after officially taking over the post.

In March, the Biden administration announced that Garcetti will be its US envoy. Garcetti got the job over two-and-a-half years after his name was first announced for the post.

Until about five years ago, Garcetti, a hardcore Joe Biden supporter, was regarded as one of the Democratic Party's young talents. However, the final years of his nine-year mayorship of Los Angeles were marred by scandals, which cost him a position in Biden's cabinet and nearly sidetracked his ambassador bid.

Garcetti's path to New Delhi was effectively sealed when the US Senate passed a cloture motion on it. A cloture motion is adopted when a supermajority supports the issue at hand and limits further debate by minority members.

Even as the World Hindu Council of America (WHCA) campaigned against Eric Garcetti's nomination for the post of Washington DC envoy to New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government welcomed the confirmation of his appointment by the US.

“We welcome the confirmation of Eric Garcetti as the US Ambassador to India. We look forward to working with him to take forward the multifaceted bilateral relations,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in New Delhi.

Eric Michael Garcetti was designated as the US ambassador to India in March 15, 2023. He previously served as Los Angeles' 42nd mayor from 2013 to 2022. He was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017. Garcetti, a former member of the Los Angeles City Council, was President of the Council from 2006 to 2012. He was the city's first elected Jewish mayor and its second Mexican-American mayor in a row. He was 42 at the time of his inauguration, making him the youngest mayor in over 100 years.

While he was praised for instituting a $15 minimum wage, improving Los Angeles' transit system and making it more earthquake-resistant, and providing residents with regular briefings during the Covid pandemic, he was chastised for the city's homelessness crisis.

During the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the death of George Floyd, he was rebuked by both the Left and the Right for attempting to find a middle ground between the "defund the police" calls. Corruption allegations at the City Council cast even more doubt on his track record.

However, the biggest setback for him came in the form of sexual misconduct allegations against an aide, whom Garcetti was accused of not acting against.

What was the Rick Jacobs sexual scandal?

Matthew Garza, a police officer and Garcetti's bodyguard, filed a lawsuit against Rick Jacobs, a key aide to Garcetti, in 2020. Jacobs allegedly touched Garza inappropriately and made "crude sexual remarks," according to Garza.

Jacobs then resigned from his position. Garcetti has repeatedly stated that he is unaware of the alleged misconduct. His opponents, on the other hand, have claimed that he either knew about the allegations or did nothing about them, or that he was unaware of what was going on in his team.

Eric Garcetti’s relation with India

The WHCA had petitioned the US Senate to reject Garcetti's nomination. It claimed that Garcetti had demonstrated a "poor understanding" of India while testifying before the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in December 2021, during his previous failed attempt to confirm the appointment.

When asked about the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) introduced by the Modi government, human rights violations, and alleged persecution of Muslims in India, Garcetti told a Senate committee that all of these issues would remain at the forefront of his engagements with New Delhi during his tenure as US ambassador to India.

The video of Garcetti’s December 2021 testimony resurfaced in social media recently, with several netizens denouncing his comments.

Garcetti is now going to lead the US embassy, which did not have a full-time ambassador at its helm since Biden succeeded Donald Trump in January 2021.

UK man pleads guilty to 2020 hijacking Twitter accounts of Biden, Obama, Kim Kardashian

Republicans alleged Wednesday that President Joe Biden's family has earned more than $10 million from shady business deals crafted while he was vice president.

With Biden ramping up his bid for a second term as president in the 2024 election, the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee alleged that the family took in $1 million tied to a business deal with a Romanian tycoon when the the-vice-president oversaw relations with the country in 2014-2015.

The deal was allegedly done by Rob Walker, a business partner of Biden's son Hunter.

In a detailed report, committee Republicans said Walker began receiving money from Romanian tycoon Gabriel Popoviciu shortly after Biden welcomed Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to the White House in September 2015.

A Cyprus company allegedly owned by Popoviciu, Bladon Enterprises, paid a private company owned by Walker over $3 million from November 2015 to May 2017.

The Republicans alleged that after the transfers came in from Bladon, Walker's company paid more than $1 million into accounts controlled by Hunter Biden, his sister-in-law Hallie Biden, and James Gilliar, another business partner of Hunter.

They said the pattern matches that of an already well-reported business deal Hunter Biden and Walker had with an energy company in China.

After receiving money from that company in 2017, the committee said Walker distributed more than $1 million to Gilliar and the Bidens.

Oversight Committee Chair James Comer said the Romanian funds were part of more than $10 million that Hunter Biden, his family and business associates had received from deals with foreigners in China, Ukraine, and elsewhere while Joe Biden was vice president from 2009 to 2017.

"Hunter Biden and his associates courted business in countries that correlated directly with Joe Biden's work as vice president. This is also not normal. It is not ethical," Comer said in a press conference.

The Republicans showed no evidence that Joe Biden directly benefitted from or even knew of the business deals and money transfers.

But they said he must have been aware of all of the companies set up by Hunter and his associates to conduct the business.

"Nobody in this room can logically sit here and say that the president of the United States had no idea that these companies were being formed while he was vice president of the United States," said Republican Representative Byron Reynolds.

Biden has repeatedly denied impropriety with regard to his son's deals and defended Hunter's business practices.

"My son has done nothing wrong. I trust him. I have faith in him," he said last week.

As the expiration of Trump-era immigration policy "Title 42" draws closer, President Joe Biden has conceded that the picture is not looking pleasant. Biden said the looming migrant surge will be 'chaotic for a while' and that he was not sure if the US is prepared for it. “We’ve gotten overwhelming cooperation from Mexico. We also are in the process of setting up offices in Colombia and other places where you could – or someone seeking asylum can go first. So, it remains to be seen. It’s going to be chaotic for a while,” Biden told reporters on Tuesday. The Democrat leader added that he spoke to Mexico's president for an hour and was receiving 'overwhelming cooperation' from there. “I spent close to an hour with the Mexican president today. We’re doing all we can. The answer is it remains to be seen." While Biden was candid in his assessment, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during the daily briefing said the administration was prepared to handle the situation. “We believe we have a robust process to deal with what is going to occur after Title 42 lifts,” she said. However, a similar sentiment was not echoed by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, who raised concerns about the preparedness. "We have not received an adequate response. We will continue to relentlessly pressure the federal government until we truly get the resources we need to manage the expected influx," said Hobbs. The travel restrictions, known as Title 42, were implemented by former president Donald Trump during his tenure in 2020. The order was passed after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was needed to stem the spread of coronavirus. Consequently, the US authorities, using the provisions of the law, were able to expel migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico, including those seeking humanitarian asylum. However, ever since the law was imposed, a section of pro-immigration voices, humanitarian groups, as well as Democrats, have argued that Trump used the pandemic as an excuse to deny thousands of people the opportunity to migrate to the USA and seek better life opportunities. This week, the Biden administration and the Texas state government are sending reinforcements to the U.S.-Mexico border in preparation for a potential spike in the number of migrants attempting to enter the nation.

The Biden administration wants airlines to pay passengers in the US for lengthy delays. President Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have announced the start of the rule-making process regarding this. This comes just weeks before the start of the peak travel season in the summer. Under this, the airlines would have to compensate passengers for delays. They have to pay for their meals and hotel for delays within the airlines' control. President Biden, while announcing this, said American air travellers deserve better.

In light of "provocations" by Ukrainian forces, operations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant have been suspended, according to a TASS state news agency report. The Moscow-installed governor of the Russia-controlled part of the surrounding region, Yevgeny Balitsky, cited concerns over Ukraine's anticipated counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-held territory, including areas in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Due to this, Russian authorities have reportedly initiated evacuations. Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear power watchdog, on Saturday, expressed concerns about the plant's safety, describing the situation as "potentially dangerous."

In response to the escalating situation, Russian officials have begun evacuating people from nearby areas. As per Reuters, approximately 3,000 people, including around 1,000 minors, have been evacuated from villages close to the front line.

"We've seen the level (of water in the nearby Kakhovka Reservoir) rise to 17.08 (metres). We realise that this is manipulation. The nuclear reactors have been suspended," he said as per TASS.

According to an AFP report, Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said that the evacuation directive has resulted in "a mad panic and no less mad queues" at the checkpoint leading to Russian-annexed Crimea.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which happens to be Europe's largest nuclear energy facility, was seized by Russia during the early stages of its invasion of Ukraine that began in February of last year. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), led by Grossi, has previously issued warnings about the plant's safety following temporary power cuts caused by shelling. In March, the IAEA cautioned that the facility was relying on diesel generators to maintain crucial cooling systems due to damage to power lines.

Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, evacuates civilians amid threat of 'provocation'

US President Joe Biden said Monday he wants to see striking movie and television writers in Hollywood promptly get a "fair deal" on contract negotiations.

"I sincerely hope the writers' strike in Hollywood gets resolved and writers are given the fair deal they deserve as soon as possible," he said during a film screening at the White House in honour of the Asian-American community.

It is the first time the pro-union Democrat has commented on the strike, which kicked off after negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and major US studios and streaming services failed last week.

The thousands of picketing writers say they are striking for better compensation in a field that has been disrupted by streaming.

WGA represents some 11,500 screenwriters.

Writers also say they are looking for more stable working conditions and a better share of the profits generated by the rise of streaming.

In the past, network television series regularly stretched into 20 episodes, providing writers with months of work, plus royalties -- known as residuals -- paid out when broadcasters aired reruns.

But as more of the industry is dominated by streaming, writers say they are making less money.

Series on streaming platforms can be markedly shorter than their network counterparts -- sometimes coming in at just six episodes -- leading to less work and smaller teams.

And writers say streaming residuals are much lower.

The strike's immediate impact has already been seen with the suspension of several late-night shows. Disruptions to television series and films more likely the longer the strike goes on.

Finally on May 11 at 11:59 PM (05:59 GMT) a controversial theTrump-era immigration policy "Title 42" is all set to expire. US officials are now preparing for an influx of immigrants at the US-Mexico border. This decision has been fuelling the immigration debate ahead of the upcoming 2024 presidential elections. The policy has been heavily criticised by some Democrats and immigration advocates as they believe it has been preventing many asylum seekers from coming into the country. However, Republicans have been arguing to let the policy remain in place to stop the "illegal borader crossings." Now the question is what will the Biden administration do? What will happen if Title 42 is gone? Scroll to read more.

What is Title 42?

Dating back to 1944, Title 42 or also known as the Public Health Act, grants US authorities emergency powers to prevent the spread of disease. The rule was imposed by Trump in March 2020, apparently to stop the spread of coronavirus across the country. Using the law and the pandemic as justification, the US authorities were able to expel migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico, including those seeking humanitarian asylum.

Even the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the order was necessary for crowded migration detention camps to stop the spread of the deadly virus. According to the data from US Customs and Border Protection, during the 2021-2022 fiscal year, over two million people were expelled under the policy.

Later in 2021, after President Joe Biden came into power, his administration kept the policy in place and continued to defend it as a public health measure for over a year.

Why has the use of Title 42 been controversial?

Immigration advocates and humanitarian groups accused Trump of using the pandemic as an excuse to deny thousands of people migrating to the US the chance for humanitarian relief through asylum.

The groups have also been accusing the Biden administration of continuing to use it. The groups have argued that the measure strokes racism and allows for discrimination because many countries had been exempt. However, following the accusations, the Biden administration allowed some 30,000 people to enter the country through humanitarian parole.

What is currently happening?

The Biden administration plans to lift Title 42 when the US Covid public emergency ends. This means the migrants crossing the border will be able to request asylum again. The officials are currently preparing for the illegal influx.

What happens next once Title 42 is gone?

After the law is lifted, the Biden administration plans to issue a new regulation that would deny asylum to most migrants crossing if they passed through another country en route to the US without seeking any protecting or failing to use legal pathways.

The authorities aim to process migrants in days and swiftly deport them if they fail in an initial asylum screening.

Some 500 US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) personnel will be temporarily assigned to help with the interviews and even Pentagon will be sending 1,500 troops to help with the border patrol.
