After weeks of wrangling US Congress has finally avoided a historic default as US President Joe Biden signed the debt ceiling bill into law. In his first address to the nation from the Oval Office, he said that no one got everything they wanted, but the American people got what they needed. The bill suspends the massive 31.4 trillion dollars debt ceiling.

Joe Biden accused of engaging in criminal bribery scheme: Report

A bipartisan agreement was reached by a vote of 63-36 in the U.S. debt ceiling proceedings. Congress has approved a deal to raise the government's borrowing limit and prevent any catastrophic default on US debt repayments. President Joe Biden will enact the measure into law on June 5. What are the highlights of this deal? Listen in to Vikram Chandra.

Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy ink a bipartisan compromise

On Friday, as the US president prepared to address the nation and hailed "a big win for our economy and the American people," the bipartisan agreement to resolve the US debt ceiling problem was on its way to Joe Biden's desk. The bill was passed just days before a catastrophic and unprecedented default. Late on Thursday, the US Senate approved the compromise bill that Vice President Biden and Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the House, crafted.

US President Joe Biden hails action on debt ceiling crisis

US President Joe Biden is playing a very dangerous game and he seems to be slipping, quite literally. He was on stage at the US Air Force Academy handing out diplomas when he slipped and fell. Is Biden to old for another presidential term?

Gravitas: US President Joe Biden falls on stage

Next year's election will mark America's 60th presidential contest. Donald Trump is the clear frontrunner in an increasingly crowded field seeking the republican presidential nomination. Florida governor Ron DeSantis jumped into the contest last week and is viewed as the most formidable challenger to twice-impeached trump. As the race for the white house heats up, DeSantis has signalled the start of a slugfest with trump. Former president Trump has swept all before him in the early stages of the contest. DeSantis has distanced himself from Trump, his erstwhile mentor. Desantis faces the daunting task of closing the gap with trump. However, he is the only other republican candidate with double-digit support in early polls. Analysts are warning against counting DeSantis out, pointing to his popularity among the suburban women, who see trump as toxic. He also enjoys the status of a winner, something trump has not been able to claim since his 2020 defeat to Biden.

DeSantis signals start of slugfest with Donald Trump | Rivalry intensifies

Joe Biden tripped and fell after handing out the last diploma at a graduation ceremony at the US Air force academy, but got up quickly and walked back to his seat. On his arrival at the White House, Biden joked about tripping on stage and said, i got sandbagged. Remember, Biden is the oldest person to hold the oval office. Polls show Americans are concerned about anyone over 75 becoming president. His leading republican opponent, Donald Trump, turns 77 this month. In February, doctors declared Biden healthy and fit for duty after a physical examination. Back then, doctors noted the US President does not drink alcohol or use tobacco, and exercises at least five times a week. Biden fell as he was dismounting his bicycle last June, after snaring a foot in a toe clip, but was uninjured.

<p>The warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Russian president's role in the alleged forced deportation of Ukrainian kids. Explained: Will Putin be arrested? Here's what happens to the ICC arrest warrant

<p>Following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March, Russian authorities have added ICC prosecutor Karim Khan to their "wanted" list.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per AFP, Khan's photo appeared in the Russian interior ministry's database on Friday. The notice reportedly identifies Khan as "a man born on March 30, 1970, in Edinburgh, Scotland" but fails to specify his offence.</p>

<h2><strong>Was Karim Khan investigated?</strong></h2>

<p>In March, Russia's Investigative Committee, which is responsible for investigating major crimes, stated that Khan was under investigation for the "criminal prosecution of a person known to be innocent" and for allegedly planning "an attack on a representative of a foreign state enjoying international protection."</p>

<p>Reuters reports that Moscow opened cases against Khan and three ICC judges on March 20 — just days after the ICC order for Putin's arrest.</p>

<h2><strong>Why did the ICC issue an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin?</strong></h2>

<p>As per AFP, the ICC's arrest warrant against Putin was issued for alleged war crimes related to the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In addition to Putin's arrest warrant, the international court had also issued an arrest warrant for Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's presidential commissioner for children's rights.</p>

<h2><strong>Can Putin actually be arrested?</strong></h2>

<p>Since Russia is not a member of the ICC, the country has dismissed the validity of the arrest warrants and said they were "void".</p>

<p>Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the ICC's decision as a "historic" one&nbsp;that initiates historic accountability. US President Joe Biden too supported the arrest warrant for Putin, stating that it was "justified".</p>

Addressing the graduates, Biden said that they will enter the service in an increasingly unstable world. He cited challenges from Russia and China. Biden said that NATO is stronger in spite of Russia's attempt to divide the alliance by attacking Ukraine. It is bolstered further, he said, by the recent admission of Finland, "and soon, Sweden." Video: US President Biden takes yet another tumble, this time at Air Force Academy

<p>Despite Turkey and Hungary’s opposition, US President Joe Biden said that Sweden will “soon” join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).</p>

US: Deal to raise debt ceiling heads to Congress, Biden urges passage

India, China and other countries congratulate Erdogan on his historic win

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuidyntMFrHi1gJU" /><meta charset="utf-8" /></p>

<p>With the US debt default deadline precariously close, President Joe Biden said his administration was close to achieving a breakthrough. For the first time in many weeks, Biden seemed upbeat about the prospect of getting the deal done and raising the debt ceiling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's very close and I'm optimistic," said Biden as he left for the Memorial Day weekend at Camp David.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biden's team at the White House was busy chalking out a deal with the Republicans at the Capitol via a conference call. Biden reflected on the same and said, “There’s a negotiation going on. I’m hopeful we’ll know by tonight whether we’re going to be able to have a deal."</p>

<p>Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, one of the lead negotiators of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy concurred with the president's statement and added, "I'm hopeful. But we have to make sure we have a line on tax, we have a line on agreement — there’s significant challenges ahead."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen&nbsp;said the government will now run out of money on June 5, instead of the earlier projected date of June 1. She, however, warned that waiting till the eleventh hour to raise the ceiling could cause more harm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Waiting until the last minute to suspend or increase the debt limit can cause serious harm to business and consumer confidence, raise short-term borrowing costs for taxpayers, and negatively impact the credit rating of the United States," she said.</p>

With the US debt default deadline precariously close, President Joe Biden said his administration was close to achieving a breakthrough. For the first time in many weeks, Biden seemed upbeat about the prospect of getting the deal done and raising the debt ceiling. "It's very close and I'm optimistic," said Biden as he left for the Memorial Day weekend at Camp David. Biden's team at the White House was busy chalking out a deal with the Republicans at the Capitol via a conference call. Biden reflected on the same and said, “There’s a negotiation going on. I’m hopeful we’ll know by tonight whether we’re going to be able to have a deal." Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, one of the lead negotiators of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy concurred with the president's statement and added, "I'm hopeful. But we have to make sure we have a line on tax, we have a line on agreement — there’s significant challenges ahead." Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the government will now run out of money on June 5, instead of the earlier projected date of June 1. She, however, warned that waiting till the eleventh hour to raise the ceiling could cause more harm. "Waiting until the last minute to suspend or increase the debt limit can cause serious harm to business and consumer confidence, raise short-term borrowing costs for taxpayers, and negatively impact the credit rating of the United States," she said. <p>A top Ukrainian war chief has revealed that the war-torn nation is ready to launch its much-anticipated counter-offensive against Russian forces. Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, revealed in an interview with the BBC that the assault to reclaim territory from President Vladimir Putin's occupying forces could begin at any time, be it "tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in a week".&nbsp;</p>

<p>A key figure in President Volodymyr Zelensky's de facto war cabinet, Danilov also confirmed that some Wagner mercenary forces were withdrawing from the city of Bakhmut — which has been the site of intense battle. However, he cautioned they were "regrouping to another three locations" and would continue their fight against Ukraine.</p>

<p>Responding to reports about the looming threat of nuclear weapons, Danilov said that he was "absolutely calm" about the deployment of nuclear weapons to Belarus by Russia and that it was not news to Ukraine.</p>

Kyiv's much-awaited counter-offensive can begin 'tomorrow, day after or in a week': Top Ukraine war chief

<p>Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Sunday stated that he was convinced that senior officials in the Kremlin had prohibited any coverage of him on state media. He warned that this misleading strategy of withholding information would ultimately end up in a backlash, causing resentment among the Russian people in a matter of months.</p>

<h2><strong>Wagner chief and the&nbsp;taboos of Putin's Russia</strong></h2>

<p>Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group and a well-known figure in President Vladimir Putin's inner circle, has gained significant notoriety during the 15-month conflict in Ukraine. <p>In doing so, Prigozhin supposedly broke the taboos of Putin's Russia, and this is reflected by the fact that Russian state television ignored the fall of Bakhmut for 20 hours and downplayed Prigozhin's role in the significant victory while refraining from airing his victory speech.&nbsp;</p>
