US President Joe Biden and Hollywood actress-director Eva Longoria smiled from ear to ear as they welcomed hundreds to the White House lawn on Thursday for the special screening of Flamin&rsquo; Hot, which critics say is a feel-good film about how a Mexican-American janitor working at Frito-Lay convinced his superiors to spice up the crunchy snack's cheesy coating.
Based on the janitor's memoir, the film gives an inspirational account of how one man reached for a dream and overcame the odds.
At the screening, Biden addressed the crowd and said, "When I think about tonight&rsquo;s movie, I think about courage. So many of you, your ancestors left behind all that they knew to start a new life in the United States."
Meanwhile, Longoria said that Monta&ntilde;ez's story inspired her because it reminded her how many times she has been rejected and heard "no" during her career. The director said that she worked hard with her team "to produce this authentic film steeped in inclusion".
First Lady Jill Biden also addressed the crowd at the screening and said that people like Monta&ntilde;ez helped change the way companies think about Latino customers. "This film isn&rsquo;t just about Richard. It&rsquo;s about everyone who has been overlooked or underestimated," she said.
However,&nbsp;several publications including&nbsp;The Los Angeles Times&nbsp;allege&nbsp;that Monta&ntilde;ez fabricated his role in the snack&rsquo;s creation. While the company, Frito-Lay, says he "was not involved".
A White House official defended the decision to screen the film, saying it is not a documentary and was shown to give Americans from different backgrounds a chance to see themselves reflected in film and celebrated by the president, as was done with other movie screenings this year. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal White House deliberations.
In the film, actor Jesse Garcia stars as Monta&ntilde;ez, a one-time Frito-Lay floor-sweeper in southern California who persuaded his bosses to make a snack that celebrates the flavours of Mexico.
The Bidens and Longoria stressed what they said was the movie&rsquo;s broader message of inclusion.
"Richard Monta&ntilde;ez disrupted the food industry in the &lsquo;90s by channelling his Mexican-American heritage to help turn Flamin&rsquo; Hot Cheetos into a multibillion-dollar brand today and a cultural phenomenon," Longoria said. "We are telling a story that celebrates the American entrepreneurial dream without sidestepping the fact that the dream isn&rsquo;t available in the same way for everyone."
Biden said it was the first White House screening of a film focused on Hispanic characters.
The film marks Longoria&rsquo;s debut as a film director. The former Desperate Housewives&nbsp;actress is also very active in Democratic politics. She spoke at the party&rsquo;s past three national political conventions and has helped raise money for Biden, former President Barack Obama and other Democratic candidates.
Biden, a Democrat, announced in April that he is running for reelection in 2024 and Hispanic Americans are a core part of the Democratic Party base.
Hundreds of people, including cast members, Latino community leaders, members of Congress, state legislators and others gathered on the lawn on blankets, wooden benches or folding chairs while munching on tortilla chips and salsa or Flamin&rsquo; Hot Cheetos and sipping cool drinks. A mariachi band on the Blue Room balcony warmed up the crowd.
Biden has screened other films this year, each time eschewing the small, 42-seat White House movie theatre for the much larger East Room or the sprawling lawn.
For Black History Month in February, the president hosted a screening of Till, a drama about the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, who was brutally killed after a white woman said the Black 14-year-old had made improper advances toward her.
Biden marked Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month last month with a screening of the streaming series American Born Chinese.
Flamin&rsquo; Hot&nbsp;was released on June 9. You can watch it on Hulu and Disney+.

The Biden administration has initiated secret discussions with Iran to secure the release of American prisoners detained by Tehran as well as to contain the country's expanding nuclear programme, reported the Wall Street Journal citing individuals familiar with the matter.&nbsp;

As these talks resumed, the US also authorised the transfer of 2.5 billion euros (which is equivalent to $2.7 billion) by the Iraqi government for Iranian electricity and gas imports. The amount had been previously frozen due to American economic sanctions.

<h2>Iran's demands for prisoner release, access to trapped funds</h2>

In return for the release of prisoners and limitations on nuclear work, reports said Iran is seeking access to billions of dollars in Iranian energy revenue currently held abroad due to US sanctions.

Iranian officials have consistently linked the potential release of prisoners to gaining access to $7 billion in Iranian funds held in South Korea. They have also demanded access to billions of dollars held in Iraq, intended for gas and oil deliveries.

<h2>Transfer of funds 'routine', unrelated to discussions: US officials&nbsp;</h2>

US officials stated that the fund transfer of 2.5 billion euros by the Iraqi government was a routine process and they are not connected to the ongoing discussions. According to reports, similar transfers have been made in the past. The only difference is that this time the funds were released in euros rather than local currencies.

It is pertinent to note that US President Joe Biden had previously promised to revive an international nuclear agreement that imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. However, in November, he declared that such a deal was no longer feasible.

The current diplomatic effort aims to manage escalating tensions between Iran and US. This is especially crucial as Iran has allegedly ramped up its supply of drones to Russia to back Moscow in its war on Ukraine which has been waging on for over a year now. Biden administration holds quiet talks with Iran to free US prisoners, curb nuke programme

The United States on Wednesday (June 14) played down expectations of any breakthrough during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China this weekend, following a tense call with China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

The United States on Wednesday (June 14) played down expectations of any breakthrough during US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China this weekend, following a tense call with China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang. In a security call with Blinken, Qin urged the US to stop meddling in its (China's) affairs and harming its security. Gang told Blinken to respect China's core concerns, such as the Taiwan issue, to arrest declining relations between the superpowers. Blinken is set to become the highest-ranking US government official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. He postponed the February trip after a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew over US airspace, increasing tensions between the two countries. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, American officials said that Blinken would push to establish open communication channels to ensure competition with the Chinese does not spiral into conflict. Daniel Kritenbrink, the State Department's top diplomat for East Asia, told reporters, "We're not going to Beijing with the intent of having some sort of breakthrough or transformation in the way that we deal with one another. We're coming to Beijing with a realistic, confident approach and a sincere desire to manage our competition in the most responsible way possible." Kritenbrink also said he expected Blinken would "reiterate America's abiding interest in the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait" and also discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Blinken's visit aimed at stabilising relations Blinken's upcoming visit to China is aimed at stabilising relations between Washington and Beijing. Kritenbrink told reporters that the US Secretary of State would hold a series of meetings with senior Chinese officials. However, it is not yet known which officials Blinken would meet. Kritenbrink also said a primary objective for Blinken would be "candid, direct and constructive" discussions with China. "There will be a substantive and productive agenda that we’ll have before us, but, again, the objective is to focus on those top-line goals, not necessarily to produce a long list of deliverables," the top diplomat added, Reuters reported. Blinken's visit would also pave the way for more bilateral meetings, including possible trips to China soon by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The Covid pandemic also had a significant impact on the prime minister's foreign travels, leading to a significant reduction in the number of visits. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be hosted by the Biden family for an intimate dinner on June 21, a day before the highly-anticipated State Dinner at the White House.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be hosted by the Biden family for an intimate dinner on June 21, a day before the highly-anticipated State Dinner at the White House. According to reports, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have extended an official invitation to PM Modi who has seemingly accepted it as well. The venue of the private meeting, however, has not been revealed. “We will have a very substantial arrival ceremony on the White House lawn. The night before, I expect the prime minister and President Biden and the Biden family to have some moments of intimacy where they really have a chance to sit down together,” a White House official was quoted as saying by PTI. The historic visit will kick off after PM Modi makes an appearance at the United Nations headquarters in New York to attend the International Yoga Day celebrations. Later, he will travel to Washington DC where an impressive welcome ceremony on the South Lawns has been planned. The South Lawns would later become the venue for the State Dinner which is expected to draw a huge crowd. Stakeholders from both countries have been eager to attend the event. “I think the State Dinner will be really a celebration of the US-India relations with supporters and advocates coming from India, but also around the United States. We have a saying...it’s a very hot ticket. Hardly a day goes by when I haven’t received requests from people to get the last tickets to the state dinner. I believe it will be a wonderful celebration,” said the official. First state visit for PM Modi PM Modi will be the first Indian PM since Manmohan Singh in 2009 to undertake a state visit to the US. Previously, PM Modi has visited the US several times during his nine-year tenure but it has been labelled working or official visit only. Not every visit by a foreign leader is classified as a state visit. State visits hold the highest ceremonial importance. At the same time, the state visit also symbolises strong bilateral relations. One of the major discussions going to take place between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden during the former’s visit to Washington would be on the joint manufacturing of fighter jet engines.

According to Bloomberg, India and the US are close to signing a military deal that would allow them to jointly develop fighter jet engines.

The report states that the White House is on the verge of clearing the proposal from General Electric Co. (GE), the Massachusetts-based aerospace manufacturing giant, to produce the engines with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. for the Tejas light-combat aircraft.

The jet engine agreement, which would require technology transfer from America, will need approval from the US Congress, which India hopes to tilt the scale in its favour on the backdrop of China’s rising assertiveness and growing relations between the two.

The production of GE engines is expected to boost India's fighter jet programme and its air force, whose fleet of rapidly ageing Russian fighters needs to be replaced.

The move is also expected to strengthen Modi's image as he looks at a third term in office in national elections next year. The PM will start&nbsp;his first formal state visit on June 21. Biden will host him for a state banquet, and the Indian premiere will also address the US Congress.&nbsp;

<h2>India’s defence ministry to take up SeaGuardian drone deal</h2>

India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) will also take up the deal to finalise SeaGuardian drone deal later today (Thursday).

Top defence ministry and military brass, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will attend the meeting. Other 'Made in India' defence deals are also on the agenda of the meeting, defence officials told WION.

The procurement project will undergo "acceptance of necessity" (AoN) by DAC. Subsequently, a Letter of Request will be issued to the US administration, followed by their response through a Letter of Offer and Acceptance, which requires notification to the US Congress.

The US had asked India to show progress on the deal for as many as 30&nbsp;MQ-9B SeaGuardian (also called Reaper) drones made by General Atomics,&nbsp;two sources&nbsp;told&nbsp;Reuters.

India had earlier used two MQ 9B drones, borrowing from the US, after the border tensions with China flared in the summer of 2020, according to Bloomberg.

The development comes as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his US counterpart Jake Sullivan held a bilateral meeting in Delhi on Wednesday.

Sullivan is on a two-day trip to India at the invitation of Doval.

The drones' deal could not take off soon as it remained stuck due to bureaucratic red tape for years.

India, US on verge of finalising deal to jointly produce fighter jet engines: Report

US President Joe Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is in India. His visit aims at making the final preparations for India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first state visit. On his two-day visit he briefed PM Modi on progress in various sectors of bilateral cooperation.

India's PM Narendra Modi to visit US on June 21, meets US NSA Jake Sullivan

Ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Washington, the Biden administration is pushing New Delhi to cut through its own red tape and advance a deal for dozens of U.S.-made armed drones, two people familiar with the matter said.

India has long expressed interest in buying large armed drones from the United States. But bureaucratic stumbling blocks have hampered a hoped-for deal for SeaGuardian drones that could be worth $2 billion to $3 billion for years.

US&nbsp;negotiators are counting on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's White House visit on June 22 to break the log jam.

Since the date for Modi's visit was fixed, the US&nbsp;State Department, Pentagon and White House have asked India to be able to "show" progress on the deal for as many as 30 armable MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones made by General Atomics, two sources said.

Modi and Biden are also expected to discuss co-production of munitions and ground vehicles, like armoured personnel carriers, while Modi is in Washington, the sources said.

Spokespeople for the White House, Department of State and the Pentagon declined to comment on the negotiations.

U.S. President Joe Biden has made deepening ties with India a cornerstone of his policy to counter China's growing influence, placing special attention this year on collaboration between the world's two largest democracies on advanced military technologies, despite their lack of a formal security alliance.

New Delhi, which often prizes its non-alignment in conflicts between great powers abroad, has frustrated Washington by maintaining some defence and economic ties with Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

Breaking India's bureaucratic log jam on drones hinges on an internal meeting to generate an "Acceptance of Necessity" document, an Indian precursor to a formal "Letter of Request" which kicks off the foreign military sale process. As of Tuesday, the sources did not know if New Delhi had generated the necessary internal document.

"That's gonna be a decision that the government of India needs to make," said a senior Biden administration official. "We think it would be good for them to go through with the purchase of MQ-9s. But those decisions are sort of more in the hands of India than they are of us."

The topic was expected to be on the agenda as Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday to finalize preparations ahead of Modi's visit.

As of last week, India's defence ministry had still not made up its mind about the number of drones it wants to buy, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Earlier, the number was pegged at 30, but that was later revised to 24, and then further down to 18 last month. Sources cautioned that none of the numbers were final.

India is also seeking components of the equipment to be domestically manufactured, something that could complicate any deal.

The Quad grouping of countries - the United States, India, Australia and Japan - all operate, or have operated, the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. Currently, India is leasing MQ-9Bs as part of an intelligence-gathering operation.

US President Joe Biden is set to miss a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg due to an abruptly scheduled dental root canal treatment. The two leaders were due to meet to discuss the situation in Ukraine. The White House said that the meeting with NATO general secretary along with a diplomatic reception later 'will be scheduled for tomorrow'.

Biden will undergo root canal on one of his lower teeth.

Kevin C. O'Connor said in a statement that President Biden was "experiencing further discomfort" from a partially treated premolar tooth in his lower right jaw.

The White House press office said Biden will "undergo a root canal this morning at the White House."&nbsp;

The press office said Biden "will not be put under anesthesia and the 25th amendment will not be invoked," meaning he will remain conscious and able to perform his duties, without having to give temporary presidential powers to Vice President Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

The root canal procedure appeared to be unplanned though the doctors did not indicate any danger to Biden's health. The president cancelled a third scheduled appearance. It was an event that was celebrating university athletes. The cancellation came less than an hour before the programme was to start.

Biden, at 80 years old, is already the oldest president ever in office. He has said that he would run for president again in 2024 elections. If re-elected, Biden will be 86 by the time he completes his second term. His health is being minutely watched.

According to O'Connor, Biden first experienced pain in the tooth on Sunday and was examined by a team from the Walter Reed presidential hospital sent to the White House.&nbsp;

The team "was able to perform an examination, to include X-rays, in the White House Dental Operatory. They determined that endodontic treatment (root canal) was most appropriate. Initial root canal procedure was performed at the time, with a plan for specialized endodontal follow-up in the near future," O'Connor wrote.&nbsp;

The doctor said Biden "tolerated the procedure well. There were no complications."&nbsp;

The information about the procedure was not made public till Monday.&nbsp;

Biden postpones meeting with NATO chief because of root canal procedure

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said on Monday (June 12) that the Burisma executive who allegedly paid United States President Joe Biden and his son Hunter kept 17 audio recordings of his conversations with them as an insurance policy.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said on Monday (June 12) that the Burisma executive who allegedly paid United States President Joe Biden and his son Hunter kept 17 audio recordings of his conversations with them as an insurance policy. According to a report by Fox News, Grassley revealed on the Senate floor what was said to be a redacted reference in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)-generated FD-1023 form alleging a criminal bribery scheme between the then-vice president Biden and a foreign national that involved influence over American policy decisions. Grassley said the form had a redacted reference that the Burisma executive possessed fifteen audio recordings of phone calls between himself and Hunter Biden. And as per the Republican Senator, the form also stated that the executive possessed two recordings between himself and Joe Biden. Grassley slams FBI, demands form to be made public Grassley criticised the FBI for not complying with the House Oversight Committee’s subpoena, saying Congress "still lacks a full and complete picture with respect to what that document really says". "That’s why it’s important that the document be made public without unnecessary redactions for the American people to see," he said, Fox News reported. The senator also pointed out that the recordings were allegedly kept as a sort of insurance policy for the foreign national in case he got into a tight spot. "1023 also indicates that then-Vice President Joe Biden may have been involved in Burisma employing Hunter Biden," Grassley added. The document was brought to Capitol Hill by the FBI last week after House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer subpoenaed it in May. The report said the FBI briefed Comer and Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin on the form but did not turn it over. Following this, the committee chairman threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress. Later, the FBI brought the form to a secure setting on Capitol Hill for all members of the Oversight Committee to review. But the document is still not in the committee's possession. On Monday, a source told the network that the FBI did not redact the section of the form referencing the audio recordings when showing the document solely to Comer and Raskin but did so for the full committee briefing. The source also said that Comer and Grassley saw the form even before the FBI shared it with Congress. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. US Senator says Burisma executive, who allegedly paid Biden, has audio recordings of prez, son Hunter

In a shocking expose ahead of the next US presidential elections, Fox News&nbsp;has alleged,&nbsp;citing sources,&nbsp;that US President Joe Biden received a substantial payment of $5 million from an executive at the Ukrainian gas company, Burisma Holdings. It is noteworthy that Biden's son, Hunter Biden, served on the board of this company.

The matter is related to the gas firm's executive who was facing challenges in accessing the US oil market due to a corruption investigation&nbsp;by Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin and was seeking favour from the Bidens.&nbsp;

According to the report by&nbsp;Fox News, the FBI was informed about this information during an interview in June 2020 with a confidential human source who indicated that then-vice president Biden and a foreign individual were allegedly involved in a criminal bribery scheme, which reportedly had an impact on US policy decisions.

The report refers to an FBI FD-1023 form, which is used by FBI agents to document unverified information provided by confidential human sources.

The form, dated 30 June 2020, reportedly describes the interviewed source as "highly credible." As per the form, the source discussed multiple meetings held with a senior executive from Burisma over several years, starting in 2015.

During these meetings, the Burisma executive sought advice from a confidential source, who was a business professional, on matters related to obtaining oil rights in the US and establishing connections with a US oil company. The executive wanted guidance on the best course of action in 2015 and 2016.

The source revealed to Fox News that the Burisma executive discussed Hunter Biden's role on the board and referred to him as "dumb".

The executive explained to the confidential source that Burisma had to make payments to the Bidens due to an ongoing investigation by Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin. The executive emphasised the difficulty Burisma would face in entering the US market amid that investigation.

Further details from the conversation indicate that the confidential source suggested to the Burisma executive to pay the Bidens $50,000 each. In response, the executive corrected the source, stating that it was not $50,000 but rather $5 million for each Biden.

The sources who shared this information with Fox News Digital claim that the confidential human source believes these payments occurred based on their conversations with the Burisma executive.

The confidential source reportedly stated that the Burisma executive mentioned making the payments through multiple bank accounts, making it difficult for investigators to uncover the truth for at least a decade. Biden received $5mn in bribery scheme from Ukrainian gas firm executive: Report

US lawmakers have urged the Joe Biden administration to address the visa wait time issue in India on a priority basis. During two separate Congressional hearings on consular affairs budget, Senator Bob Menendez (Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee), and Congressman Michael Waltz (Co-Chair of the&nbsp;House India Caucus), asked the US State Department officials&nbsp;&nbsp;why people in India were facing visa wait time up to 600 days.

The request comes just days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the US on June 21-24.

The lawmakers described India as an important partner&nbsp;where people-to-people relationship played a significant role, according to a report by the news agency PTI.

"The United States enjoys strong people to people ties with India. India is now part of the QUAD. We are constantly engaging it in geostrategic interests that we have. New Jersey is home to a great number of Indian Americans and their families. I appreciate and applaud the department's heightened focus towards reducing wait times for first time B1-B2 applicants in India?" Senator Menendez said.&nbsp;

"But despite that progress this past year, India continues to face the longest wait times globally with average wait times for an appointment for the first time B1-B2 applicant ranging between 450 and 600 days. Could you please speak to me as to why that is the case? Why does it take up to 600 days for an adjudication" Menendez asked during a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The senator also highlighted that India-US relationship is "one of the most consequential economic diplomatic security relationships we have in the 21st century."

<h2>Lawmaker mentions complaint received from Indian-Americans</h2>

Echoing Menendez's concerns, Congressman Michael Waltz said that one of the consistent and painful complaints that he received from Indian-Americans and his Indian colleagues was the wait time (for visas). During a hearing by the House Foreign Relations Committee, Waltz said, "One of the consistent and painful complaints that I receive from Indian Americans and from our Indian colleagues is the wait time, despite the fact that in India, I believe you have the second or third most consular affairs officers."

"The data that I have is that the average waiting period in Mumbai, India was 587 calendar days. With our trade over USD 150 billion with the consequential relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi coming for a state dinner and visit just this month, what are we doing to fix this. Have you looked at any India specific policy fast tracks or issues?"&nbsp;Waltz asked, PTI reported.

The Congressman said that a delay in visa would impact the relationship between the two countries.&nbsp;

<h2>'State Department took several steps to address issue'</h2>

At the two separate&nbsp;Congressional hearings, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs&nbsp;Rena Bitter told the lawmakers that the State Department had taken several steps to address the issue.&nbsp;

"India is a place where we have historically had high demand for visas and there's just a tremendous amount of pent up demand. One of the things about India is that every post is unique, but they also had a really devastating bout with Covid 19 quite late and so that their ability to meet the pent up demand lasted quite a bit longer," Bitter said.&nbsp;

"We have opened appointments for Indian nationals, dedicated appointments in other posts for specific appointments and in all other categories," Bitter added.&nbsp;"We will adjudicate 1 million visas in India this year. Our productivity there is extraordinarily high," she further said.&nbsp;

AI risks need to be addressed, says Biden in joint news conference with Sunak

United States President Joe Biden’s White House Pride Month event, which was expected to be the largest in the country’s history, was postponed from Thursday (June 8) until Saturday, said officials citing poor air quality due to the smoke drifting in from the wildfires in neighbouring Canada. This comes as the US president was expected to announce a number of steps to support the&nbsp;LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;

<h2>About the White House Pride Month event</h2>

The White House, in a statement, on Thursday said, “Today’s Pride event on the White House South Lawn will be postponed until Saturday based on the projected air quality in the region.” The event at&nbsp;the White House is expected to witness thousands of guests from across the country, including LGBTQ+ families and features&nbsp;Betty Who and Baltimore DJ Queen HD.&nbsp;

The Biden administration has said previously also that it is a deliberate move by the president, a Democrat, to contrast the Republicans and others who have targeted LGBTQ+ people. “This year we’re seeing a disturbing surge in violent threats against LGBTQ community organizations,” said domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden.&nbsp;

“In too many parts of our country, LGBTQ Americans are being targeted for who they are, and that, simply put, is discrimination,” she was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly gay White House press secretary,&nbsp;also spoke about how Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as their spouses are strong supporters of the LGBTQ+ community.

Jean-Pierre&nbsp;said that people need to know that the US president has “their back” and “will continue to fight for them. And that’s the message that we want to make sure that gets out there.”

Notably, Biden’s own views about the LGBTQ+ community have evolved over the years in public life but his support as then-vice president in 2012 for same-sex marriage is seen as a turning point which was followed by then-President Barack Obama who publicly showed his support for gay marriage a few days later.&nbsp;

<h2>What are Biden’s proposals for LGBTQ+ community?</h2>

In late 2022, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law which would federally recognise same-sex marriage amid concerns that the Supreme Court could reverse its legal support of such relationships.&nbsp;

Additionally, the upcoming proposals seem to largely counter the number of bills proposed and signed into law by Republican-led states which target transgender youth, ban books, and even stop teachers from discussing gender or sexuality with younger children. Recently, conservative lawmakers in several US states have also proposed or passed laws restricting drag performances.

The Biden administration is expected to announce a new coordinator in the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights which would help navigate the rise in book bans across the country. White House has previously said, such bans erode democracy and have an impact on LGBTQ kids as the books banned are about them, which could contribute to more&nbsp;stigma and lead to isolation.

The Department of Justice is expected to announce an expansion of its work with state and local law enforcement to protect the community. Meanwhile, Health and Human Services departments are expected to issue a new advisory for mental health care providers supporting transgender kids.&nbsp;

<h2>LGBTQ+ state of emergency in the US</h2>

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals&nbsp;in the US, on Tuesday declared its first national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ individuals. The group cited hundreds of legislation in statehouses across the country which are aimed at regulating the lives of queer people.&nbsp;

Additionally, the organisation also released a guidebook which outlined laws it deems discriminatory in various states. The organisation said that it acted in response to an “unprecedented and dangerous” rise in anti-LGBTQ bills which were signed into law.

According to the HRC, more than 70 bills which they consider anti-LGBTQ were passed in statehouses this legislative session which is nearly double from last year. The organisation also said that at least 525 bills were introduced out of which 220 affect transgender people. “This is a full-out crisis for our communities that demands a concerted response,” the campaign’s president, Kelley Robinson told The Associated Press.&nbsp;

Recently, conservative lawmakers in several US states have also proposed or passed laws restricting drag performances. The Biden administration is expected to announce a new coordinator in the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights which would help navigate the rise in book bans across the country. White House has previously said, such bans erode democracy and have an impact on LGBTQ kids as the books banned are about them, which could contribute to more stigma and lead to isolation. LGBTQ+ state of emergency in the US The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals in the US, on Tuesday declared its first national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ individuals. According to the HRC, more than 70 bills which they consider anti-LGBTQ were passed in statehouses this legislative session which is nearly double from last year. The organisation also said that at least 525 bills were introduced out of which 220 affect transgender people. “This is a full-out crisis for our communities that demands a concerted response,” the campaign’s president, Kelley Robinson told The Associated Press. A vast Soviet-era dam in the Russian-controlled part of southern Ukraine was destroyed on Tuesday. According to both the Ukrainian and the Russian forces, the destruction has unleashed a flood of water across the war zone. The destruction of the major dam has flooded nearby regions, prompting Ukraine to evacuate&nbsp;16,000&nbsp;residents from the 'critical zone'.

The two sides have blamed each other for destroying the dam.

Unverified visuals on social media show the reservoir "emptying into the Dnipro" river after a series of intense explosions around the Kakhovka Dam. Other videos show water surging through the remains of the dam, with bystanders expressing their shock, sometimes in strong language.

Ukraine dam supplying nuke plant, Crimea breached in blast, thousands evacuate amid flooding fears

Ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the US, the White House on Monday dismissed concerns about the health of the Indian democracy and said that it is in fact "vibrant" and that anybody who happens to go to New Delhi can witness that.

<h2>US and India's 'vibrant' democracy</h2>

Speaking at a press conference, John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, stated: "India is a vibrant democracy. Anybody that, you know, happens to go to New Delhi can see that for themselves. And certainly, I would expect that the strength and health of democratic institutions will be part of the discussion."

As per PTI, he was responding to a question on the health of Indian democracy under Prime Minister Modi.

"And, look, we never shy away. And you can do that with friends; you're supposed to do that with friends. You never shy away from expressing concerns that we might have with anyone around the world," said Kirby.

"But this (State) visit is really about advancing what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going forward," he added.

<h2>Kirby on Modi's upcoming visit</h2>

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a state visit to America later this month. His June 22 visit, as per the White House, will boost the US and India's "shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific."

Kirby said Modi's visit is about advancing "what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going forward".

During the visit, Indian PM Modi will be hosted by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at a state dinner at the White House.

The reason behind this, as per Kirby, is that Biden wants to meet his Indian counterpart to advance and deepen bilateral partnership and friendship.

"There are innumerable reasons why India certainly matters not just bilaterally between the two of our nations, but multilaterally on very many levels. And the President is looking forward very much to having Prime Minister Modi here to talk about all those issues and to advance and deepen that partnership and that friendship," Kirby said.

Modi has also been invited by the US Congress to address a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and Senate.

Reportedly, the theme of his address will be focused on the Indian PM's vision for India's future and the global challenges faced by India and the United States.

"India is a strong partner on very, very many levels with the United States. You saw that, in Shangri-La, Secretary Austin (Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin) announced some additional defence cooperation now that we're going to pursue with India. Of course, there's an awful lot of economic trade between our two countries. India is a member of the Pacific Quad and a key friend and partner with respect to Indo-Pacific security," added Kirby.

Ahead of Modi's US trip, White House says India a strong partner on many levels

As the Ukraine war shows no signs of abetting and nears 500 days of conflict, the situation inside Russia remains stifling. In the latest move to stifle opposition, Russia arrested more than 100 supporters of opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny on Sunday. The people, as per a protest monitoring group, had taken to the streets to mark the 47th birthday of their jailed leader.

<h2>The arrests</h2>

In its statement, the monitoring group OVD-Info said that people have been detained in 23 cities across Russia. The number of individuals arrested as of 10:42 pm Moscow time (1942 GMT) stood at 109.

Reuters reports that footage from Russia's two largest cities Moscow and St Petersburg shows police arresting individual protestors. In most cities, "only a handful" of individuals have been detained.

In one clip, a man could be seen holding up a protest sign briefly, before police usher him away, "bent over, as he groaned in pain".

Reportedly, another man in Moscow, who held up a sign that said "Free Navalny" in English, was also arrested among many others.

In St Petersburg, authorities arrested a woman who was accompanied by her "underage child".
Talking to reporters, the woman said: "I'm against the war, that's why they detained me with my underage kid."

<h2>A repeating pattern?</h2>

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war began with Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a "special military operation" on February 24th, 2022, authorities in Moscow have clamped down heavily on any signs of dissent.

Taking the crackdown on freedom to a new level, as per AFP, Russia has shut down independent media. Most key opposition figures are in exile or, like Alexei Navalny, are behind bars.

<h2>Navalny from behind the bars</h2>

Citing the Kremlin critic, AFP reports that Navalny on Sunday professed that despite tougher prison conditions and yet another spell of solitary confinement, he is "in a good mood". Navalny is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence on embezzlement and other charges. He will soon go on trial in a new "extremism" case in which he&nbsp;faces a further 35 years in prison.&nbsp;

Alexei Navalny&nbsp;is convinced that the authorities are trying to keep him imprisoned for the rest of his life.

"On the morning of your birthday you have to be honest with yourself, so I ask myself the question: am I really in a good mood, or do force myself to feel that way?

"My answer is: I really am. Let's face it, of course I wish I didn't have to wake up in this hellhole and instead have breakfast with my family, receive kisses on the cheek from my children, unwrap presents..."

"But life works in such a way that social progress and a better future can only be achieved if a certain number of people are willing to pay the price for their right to have beliefs."

In his message, the opposition leader Alexei Navalny expressed hope that "the day will come when speaking the truth and advocating for justice will become something commonplace and not at all dangerous in Russia."

Nikki Haley, a Republican candidate in the race for the US White House, has criticised her two contenders, former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for their stance on Ukraine's conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

Haley, who previously served as the UN ambassador under Trump, took issue with their refusal to express a clear position on whether they want Ukraine to succeed in its war against Russia.&nbsp;

<h2>What is their stand?</h2>

In a recent statement, Trump stated that he wanted the war to end and that he would assist in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

DeSantis too has expressed his support for a settlement to the war and said he hoped for an end to the fighting by the time he becomes the president in January 2025.&nbsp;

Haley, during a CNN town hall event in Iowa, criticized DeSantis for referring to the conflict as a "territorial dispute," a statement he has since retracted.&nbsp;

"For them to sit there and say that this is a territorial dispute - that's just not the case, or to say that we should stay neutral," she told voters.

She argued that it is in the best interest of national security for Ukraine to win the conflict. The issue of Ukraine tends to divide Republicans due to varying positions on isolationism among primary voters.&nbsp;

<h2>Republican contenders</h2>

In the upcoming elections the number of Republican contenders will this week reach double digits, reports Reuters.

Despite being among the Republican contenders, Haley faces strong competition from Trump, who leads the field with 49 per cent support, and DeSantis, who follows with 19 per cent support in Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll conducted in May.&nbsp;

<h2>The race for White House</h2>

As per Reuters, Haley and other candidates polling in the single digits are attempting to differentiate themselves from DeSantis in the hopes that he stumbles, allowing them to emerge as the primary alternative to Trump.&nbsp;

Some candidates, including Haley, have also started criticising Trump directly, a departure from their previous reluctance to do so out of fear of alienating his loyal supporters.&nbsp;

Haley also reportedly criticised Trump for congratulating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after the country was elected to the executive board of the World Health Organization, calling Kim a "thug" and expressing opposition to congratulating dictators.&nbsp;
