Israel has denied all allegations of genocide in connection with its war against Gaza's ruling Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and asked the court to reject the case outright, saying it respects international law and has a right to defend itself.

Israel has said it is planning to expand its ground assault into Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinians have sought refuge from the offensive that has laid waste to much of the Gaza Strip since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7.

"In a request submitted to the court yesterday (Feb. 12), the South African government said it was gravely concerned that the unprecedented military offensive against Rafah, as announced by the State of Israel, has already led to and will result in further large-scale killing, harm and destruction," a statement issued by South Africa's presidency said.

"This would be in serious and irreparable breach both of the Genocide Convention and of the Court's Order of Jan. 26."

The Hague-based ICJ declined to comment on whether it had received the request.

In past cases, the ICJ has sometimes granted additional emergency measures when circumstances on the ground changed.

The court has not yet ruled on the core of the case brought by South Africa - whether genocide has occurred in Gaza. But it recognised the right of Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide.

The footage was reportedly filmed on October 10, three days after Hamas militants attacked Israel and killed nearly 1,200 people, according to Israeli officials, and took more than 240 others as hostages back to Gaza.&nbsp;

Israel has since retaliated with a military operation in Gaza and killed nearly 28,500 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.&nbsp;

The IDF clip also shows troops giving a tour of the tunnel where the Hamas chief allegedly hid with other senior officials of the Palestinian militant group.&nbsp;

The video, according to Times of Israel, showed that the tunnel has two bathrooms, a kitchen, an area to sleep and a separate room which the IDF said belongs to Sinwar.&nbsp;

In the room, as per Israeli media reports, soldiers found a safe with millions of shekels and dollars in cash. The tunnel in question was in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, according to the IDF.&nbsp;

Hagari said that the video, obtained from a surveillance camera, was filmed on October 10 and shows that Sinwar “escaped with his family underground to one of the safe accommodation complexes he had built in advance".

The clip shows a man, Sinwar’s brother Ibrahim, leading the Hamas chief, along with his wife and children, through the tunnel, reported Times of Israel.

The legislation includes around $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel in its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas and nearly $5 billion to support US partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

On Monday (Feb 12), as the $95 billion foreign aid package was still being formulated in the Senate, Johnson indicated that the Republican-led chamber would not take it up as it does not include provisions to address the record flow of migrants across the US-Mexico border.

“In the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters,” said Johnson, in a statement late Monday.&nbsp;

It added, “America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo.” This Speaker has previously suggested that the House could split the legislation into separate bills.&nbsp;

Less than a week ago, the $118 billion bipartisan bill that combined an overhaul of the country’s immigration policy and security measures at its border with Mexico with a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, was rejected by the members of Johnson’s own party in the Senate.

"UNRWA ... does not have the military and security expertise nor the capacity to undertake military inspections of what is or might be under its premises," said the lieutenant-colonel.

"In the past, whenever (a) suspicious cavity was found close to or under UNRWA premises, protest letters were promptly filed to parties to the conflict, including both the de facto authorities in Gaza (Hamas) and the Israeli authorities," he added.

Speaking further he said, the underground facility played a key role in directing combat activities.&nbsp;

This came just hours after US President Joe Biden warned Israel against expansion of its Gaza offensive to the southern city.

Biden on Thursday said that Israel's response and conduct in the war after Hamas' deadly October 7 attacks was 'over the top'. This is the harshest criticism yet by Israel's biggest international backer.

"The Israeli occupation's move threatens security and peace in the region and the world. This is a blatant violation of all red lines," said the office of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned "another bloodbath in Gaza cannot be allowed", in a post on X.

"An Israeli attack on 1.5 million Palestinians already facing inhumane conditions in Rafah will cause a massacre of innocent people," he wrote, urging the "whole world" to prevent it.

Spain and Germany also warned of a "humanitarian catastrophe" if the plan went ahead.

"We call for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, respect for international humanitarian law and the entry of aid," Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares posted on X.

Hamas says military action in Rafah may lead to ‘tens of thousands’ of casualties

After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ terms of a ceasefire in Gaza, five Israeli hostages, who were released in the month of November, launched an appeal seeking&nbsp;him to push for a deal.

During an emotional press conference in Tel Aviv, 72-year-old Adina Moshe pleaded with the Israeli prime minister saying "Everything is in your hands."

Tearful Moshe said that she feared the ones held captive by the Palestinian militant group would have to pay the price for Netanyahu's plan to attain “absolute victory” over Hamas.

She said, “I’m very afraid and very concerned that if you continue with this line of destroying Hamas, there won’t be any hostages left to release.”

The others present in the emotional presser were 34-year-old Sharon Aloni Cunio, 41-year-old Nili Margalit, 62-year-old Aviva Siegel and 16-year-old Sahar Calderon, who were kidnapped by Hamas on Oct 7 when the militant group launched unprecedented attacks against Israel. They were released&nbsp;as&nbsp;part of a temporary truce deal with Israel in November.

The freed hostages came together after Netanyahu rebuffed Hamas' terms for a ceasefire deal saying that the victory was "within reach".

“We are on the way to complete victory. The victory is within reach,” said Netanyahu, during a press conference, adding that the war will be won in a “matter of months” not years.&nbsp;

“We will continue until the end,” said the Israeli PM in his remarks.&nbsp;

Cunio who was abducted along with her daughters and her husband said that the fate of her family was in Netanyahu's hands.

“We’ve reached the awful moment when you must decide who lives and who dies … 136 hostages now wait in tunnels, without oxygen, without food, without water and without hope, waiting for you to save them. The price is heavy, unbearable, but the price of negligence will become a stain for generations,” she said.

Calderon who was released along with her brother in November, said that she was desperately waiting for the return of her father who was still in captivity.

“I am alive and breathing, but my soul has been murdered,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Cunio.

“I am grateful to the government for bringing me back, but what about my father who is abandoned anew every day, uncertain if he will live or die? I just want his warm embrace. Bring him back, do not make me lose faith in our country a second time,” she added.

Margalit, who was abducted from the Nir Oz kibbutz, said, “If the hostages do not return to their homes, every mother and father will know that they are next in line and that they live in a country that is not committed to their safety.”

While Keshet said, “This is a decisive moment. I want to stress the urgency of the situation. We urge the world’s leaders to help us make sure that the deal goes through. The price on our society is unbearable. The price of not getting them back while we still can is unbearable.”

News agency AFP quoted a source within Lebanese security apparatus to say that the official was "seriously wounded and a companion was also injured" in the strike in the city of Nabatiyeh, some way from the border region that has seen almost daily exchanges of fire since the Israel-Hamas war broke out last October."

National News Agency, the state-run news outlet in Lebanon said that a vehicle caught fire after being hit by a missile fired from Israeli drone. The drone reportedly entered Nabatiyeh at around 4:15 pm (1415 GMT).

AFP reported that Israel military was "examining reports" of the strike.

Hezbollah has targetted Israeli army position along the border and has received help from Palestinian Islamist Movement. Israel has bombarded Lebanon's border towns as well resulting in 227 deaths so far. Majority of those dead are Hezbollah fighter while 27 civilian lives have been lost, said AFP.

Israeli army has said that there have been 15 deaths on its side in the northern border areas. Those dead include nine soldiers and six civilians.

Although hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah are out in the open following outbreak of Israel-Hamas war, the situation has not descended into an all-out war so far.

However, many Republicans promptly rejected the package when it was released on Sunday (Feb 4) even though it included some of their demands.&nbsp;

The rejection reportedly came after Trump ramped up pressure on Republican lawmakers to reject any compromise on the package as he campaigns to defeat Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election.&nbsp;

“Some have been very clear with me they have political differences with the bill,” said Republican Senator James Lankford, one of the negotiators of the bill. He added, “They say it’s the wrong time to solve the problem, let the presidential election solve the problem.”

Meanwhile, an independent senator from the US state of Arizona, Kyrsten Sinema, one of the authors of the deal, said she was baffled by the sudden shift. She told the chamber that the Republican abandonment of efforts to pass immigration reform was “shameful”.&nbsp;

The Senate is now looking to vote on a $96 billion package that excludes the immigration provisions but keeps foreign aid intact.&nbsp;

The $95.34 billion spending bill includes security assistance for Ukraine ($60.06 billion) and Israel ($14.1 billion), international humanitarian aid ($9.15 billion) and resources to help allies in the Indo-Pacific ($4.83 billion), including Taiwan.&nbsp;

The bill would also allocate $2.44 billion to the Pentagon for operations around the Red Sea, where the US forces have sought to stop attacks on shipping by the Iran-backed Yemen-based Houthi rebels.&nbsp;

<h2>Rise in tensions in the Middle East</h2>

The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is escalating and spreading to the rest of the region with Iranian-backed groups entering the fray and firing on American soldiers in Iraq and Syria.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Yemen-based Houthis attacked shipping routes in the Red Sea which they say is in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war, there have been several attacks against American troops in the Middle East, including the drone strike last week in Jordan that killed three military personnel.&nbsp;

<h2>'No deal yet on Gaza truce', says senior Hamas official</h2>

Meanwhile, a senior Hamas official on Saturday said that a final deal had not yet been reached over pausing the four-month-long war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group in the Gaza Strip.

Osama Hamdan, a top Hamas official in Lebanon said that the leaders of the militant group were reviewing the proposal by top officials from Israel, Qatar, Egypt and the United States, but more time was needed to "announce our position".

He told a news conference that his movement "has repeatedly said" it was "open to discussing any initiative... putting an end to this barbaric aggression against our Palestinian people".

He confirmed that the group had received the proposal that was drafted by top leaders in Paris, however, stated that an agreement had not yet been reached and that the plan was missing certain details.

"We will announce our position" soon, "based on... our desire to put an end as quickly as possible to the aggression that our people suffer", he added.

<h2>US military says it destroyed drones near Yemen</h2>

In another development from the Red Sea crisis, the United States on Saturday (Feb 3) launched strikes targeting six anti-ship missiles belonging to Yemen's Houthi rebel group, according to the US military.

The missiles were "prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea. US forces identified the cruise missiles in Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to US Navy ships and merchant vessels," Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on social media.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, CENTCOM said that the American forces had shot down eight drones near Yemen on Friday (Feb 2) and destroyed four more before they could be launched.

It further said that the ones hit on the ground belonged to the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group. However, CENTCOM did not specify a country or group linked to the missiles shot out of the air.

Hackers have used the notorious Pegasus spyware to break into the phones of dozens of journalists and activists in Jordan over the past four years, according to the findings of an investigation released Thursday.

The Access Now NGO highlighted 35 cases of hacking that date back to 2019, with targets that also include lawyers and at least one politician.

The report did not accuse Jordan's government of deploying the spyware but said its use came as the authorities "dialled up their repression of citizens' rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly".&nbsp;

The malware, which can seize control of a phone's microphone and camera and access documents, hit global headlines when a leak in 2021 showed how governments used it to spy on critics.

Despite the scandal, the Israeli firm behind Pegasus, NSO Group, and similar companies continue to sell their products to governments around the world.

But Access Now's regional policy director Marwa Fatafta said there was generally no oversight of companies offering such spying software, allowing the surveillance sector to continue its "secretive and shady" manner of business.

"Governments are feverishly purchasing their technologies to spy on their citizens and to crack down on civil society," she told AFP.

The NGO reiterated its call for an outright ban on any spyware that enables rights abuses.

"There is no proportionate use of spyware," Fatafta said.

<h2>'Much more intrusive'&nbsp;</h2>

Access Now said most of the cases it had uncovered in Jordan dated from 2020 to late 2023.

Daoud Kuttab, a Palestinian-American journalist in Jordan, had his phone hacked three times in 2022 and 2023 and faced a further seven failed attempts.

He said most journalists working in the Middle East expect their phones to be tapped.

"In the past it was only people overhearing what you say, but Pegasus is much more intrusive," Kuttab told AFP.

He said the most worrying aspect was the possibility that bad actors could get access to his contacts.

"I don't want to burn my contacts, I don't want to hurt them," he said.

According to Access Now, many of the people targeted had been connected in some way to a month-long teachers' strike in 2019, which prompted the authorities to arrest hundreds of teachers and dissolve their union.

Access Now said it had not been able to prove forensically who was behind the Pegasus attacks.

But a separate 2022 report from two other NGOs, Citizen Lab and Front Line Defenders, identified "two Pegasus operators that we believe are likely agencies of the Jordanian government".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the European Union,&nbsp;one of UNRWA's top donors, on Monday (Jan 29)&nbsp;demanded an "urgent" audit of the UN agency for Palestinians.&nbsp;

A commission statement said the EU executive "will determine upcoming funding decisions...in light of the very serious allegations made on 24 January relating to the involvement of UNRWA staff in the heinous 7 October attacks". It also said&nbsp;no additional funding to UNRWA "is foreseen until the end of February".

The Palestinian militant group Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel resulted in the killing of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and around 240 people were taken to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli officials. Approximately more than 100 people are still said to be in Hamas captivity.&nbsp;

The governments who have made this decision without any due process or investigation, according to Boyle, are in violation of Article 2(c) of the Genocide Convention, which states “Deliberately&nbsp;inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”

It is also worth noting that in its 29-page court order, the UN judges did indicate that they see a credible risk to Palestinians under the Genocide Convention, saying that “there is a real and imminent risk that irreparable prejudice will be caused to the rights claimed before the Court gives its final decision.”

<h2>‘Shocking suspension’</h2>

“It is shocking to see a suspension of funds to the agency in reaction to allegations against a small group of staff, especially given the immediate action that UNRWA took by terminating their contracts and asking for a transparent independent investigation,” said UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) chief Philippe Lazzarini, in a statement,&nbsp;

“Palestinians in Gaza did not need this additional collective punishment,” the UNRWA chief said on X and added&nbsp;“This stains all of us.”

On Friday (Jan 26), UNRWA said that it had terminated several employees following information about their alleged involvement provided by Israeli authorities.&nbsp;

UN chief Antonio Guterres has ordered an “urgent and comprehensive independent review of UNRWA,” said his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel resulted in the killing of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and around 240 people were taken to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli officials. Approximately more than 100 people are still said to be in Hamas captivity.&nbsp;

Israel has since retaliated with constant bombardment and ground operation in the Palestinian enclave killing more than 26,000 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Nine countries suspend aid for UNRWA</h2>

As of Saturday, six European countries, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland, joined the United States, Australia and Canada in pausing the funding to the UN aid agency.&nbsp;

Berlin, on Saturday (Jan 27), became the latest European country to suspend funding saying so long as the accusation had not been cleared up, “Germany, in agreement with other donor countries” would for the moment withhold approval for further resources, said the foreign ministry in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said UNRWA should be replaced once fighting in the enclave dies down after accusing it of ties with the Islamist militants in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In Gaza’s rebuilding, @UNRWA must be replaced with agencies dedicated to genuine peace and development,” said Katz.&nbsp;

Notably, the UNRWA plays a significant role in the Palestinian enclave and helps provide education, health and aid services to two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million population.&nbsp;

“Any UNRWA employee involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution,” the UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini had said when the allegations were first levelled against the agency’s staff.

However, he did not disclose the number of employees allegedly involved in the attacks, nor the nature of their supposed involvement.&nbsp;

<h2>Palestinian officials, Hamas condemn&nbsp;decision</h2>

Several top Palestinian officials and Hamas have criticised the decision by some Western countries to suspend funding to the UNRWA warning of a “great” risk.&nbsp;

The Palestinian foreign ministry criticised what it described as an Israeli campaign against UNRWA.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Secretary General Hussein al-Sheikh took to X and said that the nine countries’ decision “entails great political and humanitarian relief risks”.

“At this particular time and in light of the continuing aggression against the Palestinian people, we need the maximum support for this international organization and not stopping support and assistance to it,” he added.&nbsp;

The Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on Saturday, slammed Israeli “threats” against the UN agency.&nbsp;

"While I understand their concerns -- I was myself horrified by these accusations -- I strongly appeal to the governments that have suspended their contributions to, at least, guarantee the continuity of UNRWA's operations," Guterres said in a statement, on Sunday.&nbsp;

He added, "The abhorrent alleged acts of these staff members must have consequences." However,&nbsp;Guterres said, "tens of thousands of men and women who work for UNRWA, many in some of the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be penalized."&nbsp;

According to the UN chief,&nbsp;12 UNRWA employees were cited in the accusations by Israel out of which one is dead, nine&nbsp;have been fired and the "identity of the two others is being clarified,"&nbsp;Guterres confirmed.&nbsp;

The video of the shawarma joint, situated in the Southern Mazar district of the country, took the internet by storm and triggered severe backlash for glorifying the Hamas attacks.

However, Israel's Ynet News quoted a social media post by the owner of the restaurant where he claimed that he had to forcibly take down the name of his food outlet due to "political pressure".

He further added that the government authorities had threatened to withhold his business license stating that it was against the law to give a restaurant a name with political connotations. &nbsp;

“The date October 7 is an honourable date and will remain engraved in our hearts forever. I wasn’t looking for fame, trends or marketing. I am proud of myself and proud that I shook the fragile entity [Israel] by using the name of a shawarma restaurant and struck terror in their hearts for at least two days,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

After the video of the restaurant went viral, the chief of Israel’s opposition party, Yair Lapid, released a statement saying that the name 'October 7' showcased "incitement and hatred against Israel," further urging the Jordanian government to take stern action.

"The disgraceful glorification of October 7th has to stop. The incitement and hatred against Israel breeds the terrorism and extremism which led to the brutal massacre of October 7th," Lapid wrote on X.
