Speaking about the new measure, on Wednesday (Dec 6), ahead of the meeting of state and federal interior ministers, Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang, a member of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union party, called for similar measures across Germany.&nbsp;

Her ministry had sent a decree to all Saxony-Anhalt municipalities informing them of the policy in late November.&nbsp;

The decree asks all officials to pay close attention if an applicant exhibits antisemitic attitudes and states that “obtaining German citizenship requires a commitment to Israel’s right to exist.”

The applicants would also be asked to confirm in writing that they “recognize Israel’s right to exist and condemn any efforts directed against the existence of the State of Israel.”

The Saxony-Anhalt state interior ministry, in a letter to the local authorities, reportedly said naturalisation should be denied if the person engages in activities which would affect Germany’s liberal democratic order as outlined in the country’s Basic Law – which also includes denial of Israel’s right to exist and antisemitism.&nbsp;

The local officials have also been instructed to deny an application if the individual refuses to sign the declaration and make a note of the refusal for future reference.&nbsp;

However, the state regulation is yet to be debated in the Bundestag or German parliament. According to reports, some experts have argued that a written statement does not really confirm if a person is antisemitic or not.&nbsp;

Additionally, critics have also questioned the point of having the written statement as applicants are already required to sign their support of the constitution which includes these measures.&nbsp;

Senate Republicans on Wednesday (Dec 6) blocked the White House's request for $106 billion in emergency aid for Ukraine as well as Israel as the conservatives showed resistance to the debarment of immigration reforms they had demanded as part of the package.

The vote was 49 in favour to 51 against, which left the $110.5 billion measure short of the 60 votes needed in the 100-member Senate to pave the way to start debate, endangering President Joe Biden's push to provide new aid before the end of this year.

The package would provide approximately $60 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, along with funds for humanitarian and economic aid for the government in Kyiv.

It would also include $14 billion for Israel as it battles Hamas in Gaza.

A Democrat, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, also voted for a "no" stating that he could introduce the measure again in the future.&nbsp;

Schumer, post the voting, also underlined the risk if Ukraine fails to succeed, saying that it was a "serious moment that will have lasting consequences for the 21st century," risking the decline of Western democracy.

Republicans stated that it was extremely important to make their case for tighter immigration policies and control of the southern border.

Earlier in the day, United States President Joe Biden pleaded with the Republicans for more funds in military aid for Ukraine stating that if Russia succeeds in its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow would attain the position of attacking NATO allies and there is a possibility that it could draw US troops into a war.

"If Putin takes Ukraine, he won’t stop there," Biden said. Putin will attack a NATO ally, he predicted, and then "we’ll have something that we don't seek and that we don't have today: American troops fighting Russian troops," Biden said.

“We can’t let Putin win,” he said.

US Senate Republicans block Ukraine, Israel aid bill over immigration row

Israel allowed a "minimal" increase in the fuel supply to conflict-torn Gaza in order to prevent a "humanitarian collapse", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

"The Security Cabinet, this evening, approved the recommendation of the War Cabinet to allow a minimal supplement of fuel – necessary to prevent a humanitarian collapse and the outbreak of epidemics – into the southern Gaza Strip," Netanyahu's office wrote on X.

"The minimal amount will be determined from time to time by the War Cabinet according to the morbidity situation and humanitarian situation in the Strip," it added.

Israel's announcement comes two days after its staunch ally, the United States, called for more fuel to be allowed into the besieged Palestinian enclave.

The move also comes after the United Nations warned of a complete breakdown of public order in Gaza as the conflict intensifies in the south of the Palestinian territory.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he feared that the public order would "completely break down soon" in Gaza.

"Amid constant bombardment by the Israel Defense Forces, and without shelter or the essentials to survive, I expect public order to completely break down soon due to the desperate conditions, rendering even limited humanitarian assistance impossible," he said in a letter to the UN Security Council.&nbsp;

Guterres told the council in his letter that the war "may aggravate existing threats to international peace and security."

US officials believe Israel will end ground operations in southern Gaza by January: Report

Jonathan&nbsp;Samerano, a 21-year-old who was taken hostage after the Palestinian terrorists launched attack on October 7 has died in Hamas captivity, his family was notified, Israeli media reported on Monday (Dec 4).&nbsp;

The 21-year-old from Tel Aviv was at the Supernova music festival in southern Israel’s kibbutz Re’im when Hamas fighters attacked.

According to Israeli officials, hundreds were killed at the desert festival which was said to be one of the first places attacked by the Hamas terrorists on October 7.&nbsp;

<h2>About Samerano’s death</h2>

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) informed the 21-year-old’s family of his death in Hamas’ captivity on Monday, reported the Israeli media.&nbsp;

He was reportedly kidnapped on October 7 after he had escaped the festival towards Kibbutz Be’eri before being shot and taken into Gaza.

According to Israeli media reports, he and his friend Maor Gratzyani allegedly sought rescue. Gratzyani’s body was found in the vicinity several days after the massacre.&nbsp;

Samerano, a DJ, was at the festival with his friends wearing a black tank top, green pants and a green hat. His family says he was always the life of any party and had not been heard from since 7:00 am (local time) that morning.&nbsp;

His parents were earlier told to assume he is in Gaza in Hamas captivity. Samerano is survived by his parents, Kobi and Ayelet, and his brother Yair.&nbsp;

“Jonathan was a magical kid, surrounded by friends, a DJ who only wanted to make music, grow, be happy and travel. He had so many dreams,” said members of his family, as quoted by Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.&nbsp;

Around two civilian deaths for every Hamas fighter killed in Gaza, admits Israeli military

An American destroyer shot down multiple drones on Sunday (Dec 3) while assisting commercial ships in the Red Sea that were targeted by&nbsp;Yemen, said the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). The Pentagon had previously said that they were aware of reports regarding attacks on an American warship and commercial vessels in the area.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels had claimed drone and missile attacks on two Israeli vessels in the area.&nbsp;

In recent weeks, the Iran-backed group in Yemen has launched several drones and missiles towards Israel, particularly since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and even seized what they called an Israel-linked cargo vessel.&nbsp;

The US military said that the Carney, an American destroyer, responded to distress calls and provided assistance following missile and drone launches from Houthi-controlled territory.&nbsp;

Carney detected a missile from the Houthi-controlled area of Yemen which landed near the Bahamas-flagged M/V Unity Explorer. The cargo ship later reported minor damage from another missile from a rebel-held area, reported AFP.&nbsp;

A Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, M/V Number 9, also reported some damage to the vessel but didn't report any casualties after a missile attack from Yemen. M/V Sophie II, which also has Panama’s flag, said it was struck as well but reported no significant harm.

A spokesperson for the Iran-backed group also said that the ships were targeted after they rejected warnings, but did not give any other details about the incident.&nbsp;

In a statement on social media, the group said, the attacks on the country’s vessels would continue “until the Israeli aggression against our steadfast brothers in the Gaza Strip stops”.&nbsp;

The United States is planning to impose visa ban on Israeli extremist settlers who have carried out violent acts against Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank, reported Reuters citing an unnamed senior official of US Department of State. The report said that the visa ban will be imposed in the next few weeks. Biden administration has reportedly informed Israel about this.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, when he met Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet recently, had conveyed the action US intended to take.

Violence has surged in the West Bank which is among the territories where Palestinians are seeking statehood. The violence this year has been at a more-than-15-year high. The Palestinian health ministry on Wednesday (Nov 29) said that shots fired from the Israeli military claimed the lives of an eight-year-old boy and a teenager in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

"Adam al-Ghul, eight years old, and Bassem Abu el-Wafa, 15 years old, were killed by bullets from the occupier,"&nbsp;the ministry released a statement saying.

As per local media reports, the CCTV footage of the incident doing rounds on the internet shows a boy being hit by a bullet and falling in the street, prompting the other kids to flee from the site.

Several other images of the incident show a teenager also being struck by a bullet and falling, appearing to call for help as more shots hit the ground around him and other people run for cover, as per news agency AFP reports.

An official with the Palestinian Red Crescent told AFP that the boy and the teen had been on a side street of central Jenin's main thoroughfare, an area apparently off limits to the Israeli army as it is solely under the control of the Palestinian Authority.

It said that the army personnel did carry an overnight raid in the Jenin refugee camp which it said "killed two high-ranking terrorists".

Out of the two, one was wanted over connection with attacks that claimed the lives of Israelis or wounded them.

Meanwhile, Hamas claimed that a ten-month-old hostage, Kfir Babis was killed along with two family members in an alleged Israeli airstrike before the truce.&nbsp;

Hamas' armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades made the claims, to which Israel reacted saying that it is still verifying the reports. The militant group failed to provide any evidence supporting its claims over the killing of the baby.&nbsp;

The Palestinian militant group further stated that the baby's mother, 30-year-old mother Shiri Silberman-Babis and four-year-old brother Ariel, were also killed in the Israeli bombardment.

The Israeli army said that it is investigating the reports. It released a statement saying that it was "verifying the accuracy of the information."

"Hamas is endangering the lives of all the hostages in the Gaza Strip, which includes nine children, and is responsible for their security," an IDF statement said.&nbsp;

He said the compound where they were held was “quite large”.

He recalled how he would walk around counting steps to pass the time, Israeli media quoted him as saying. “One pita a day. Sometimes there were cans of tuna that the four of us shared,” he said, adding that there was very little food for the hostages to eat.

He added, “Sometimes there was a piece of cheese. Once, they let us shower.”

Two more Thai workers were set free on Tuesday (Nov 28), bringing the total number of Thai nationals released to 23.

“I went around to speak to various countries who can connect with the Hamas group to explain that the Thai workers are innocent, they are not involved in politics, they are not part of anyone's conflict, and they probably don't even know how the situation came to be, who's fighting with whom. They were there to earn a living,” the Thai FM told Reuters.&nbsp;

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Thai minister visited 17 freed Thai hostages at the medical centre where they were being treated upon their release.

However, the outcome of the talks held between the three parties, also attended by Egyptian officials, was unclear, the source added.

CIA Director William Burns was in Doha "for meetings on the Israel-Hamas conflict including discussions on hostages," a US official said on condition of anonymity. The official did not elaborate on the matter. &nbsp;

India's daily coronavirus caseload has finally registered a dip. In the last 24 hours, more than 320,000 people have tested positive. It is India's lowest count in 14 days.

For the past two days, new infections have been dropping, with major hotspots&nbsp; Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh reporting a fall in new cases.

The number of active cases have&nbsp;declined as well. It has fallen by 30,000. For the first time in 61 days, India has reported a decline in active cases. It now stands at 3.7 million, almost 20 million people have recovered.

However, there is no fall in the number of fatalities since once again India has reported almost 4,000 deaths in a day.

The pandemic has killed close to 250,000 people in India.&nbsp;The drop in positive cases is a promising sign.&nbsp;However, it cannot be said India has touched the peak. The country's positivity rate remains around 21 per cent, which means more than one out of five people are testing positive.

India needs to bring down the positivity rate to less than five per cent. Only then&nbsp;it will have the second wave be under control.

India needs to test more. On Sunday, India had conducted just 1.47 million tests which is the lowest this month. Monday was an improvement with over 1.8 million tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the past two weeks, India has conducted more than 1.9 million tests in a day multiple times. However, the vaccination curve has peaked. The vaccinations were on a high in April.

India has been administering close to two million doses a day with over 170 million shots given so far and just 2.7 per cent of India's population has got both shots.

Maharashtra has stopped vaccination for those above 18. The state says it will only inoculate those above 45 years of age because it does not have enough doses even as the Centre has asked state governments to prioritise those waiting for their second jab.

Hamas frees 12 more hostages in exchange for 30 Palestinian detainees in latest swap

Eleven more hostages held captive by Hamas during the Oct 7 onslaught&nbsp;were released on Monday (Nov 27) under the truce deal signed by both Israel and the Palestinian militant group.

The Israeli military released a statement saying that the hostages, freed in the Gaza Strip, had arrived safely in the country's territory. This came after the extension of the truce was announced by two days between the warring sides.

"Our forces will accompany them until they are reunited with their families," Israeli Defence Forces said in a statement, adding the military "salutes and embraces the released hostages upon their return home".

This fourth batch of hostages freed by Hamas included French, German and Argentinian dual nationals, Qatar said before their release.

On "the fourth day of the humanitarian truce agreement, 33 Palestinian civilians will be released today in exchange for the release of 11 Israeli detainees from Gaza," Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said on X.

A report by Tel Aviv-based investment banking and financial advisory firm, Leader Capital Markets, said that the war would cost an estimated 180 billion shekels ($48.5 billion) in 2023-24.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Israeli finance ministry, as per Bloomberg, reported that the war is costing the economy close to $270 million every day.

Separately, the Calcalist financial newspaper citing preliminary finance ministry figures, earlier this month, said that the war will cost Israel $51 billion. The estimate, which equals up to 10 per cent of the country’s GDP, was premised on the war lasting between eight to 12 months.&nbsp;

<h2>What does the govt plan on doing?</h2>

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the government was readying an economic aid package for those affected by Palestinian attacks that will be “bigger and broader” than during the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

While the Israeli government is still in the midst of hammering out the new budget, Governor Amir Yaron, speaking about the decision, warned about the fiscal ramifications of the war which the country would have to endure for at least a medium-term and urged caution.

“Alongside the need to provide a budgetary response to needs created by the war, in emergency times as well there is considerable importance to maintaining a responsible fiscal framework,” said Yaron, as quoted by Bloomberg.&nbsp;

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old&nbsp;Jason J. Eaton.

The shooting is being seen as a suspected "hate-motivated crime." 
 
Eaton lived in an apartment building near the site of the shooting.&nbsp;

He was&nbsp;detained around 3:30 pm (local time) on Sunday at the site of the attack, the&nbsp;Burlington Police Department said.

What do we know about the incident?

The incident took place on a street near the University of Vermont where the suspect, who was described as a “white man with a handgun,” without saying anything “discharged at least four rounds from the pistol" fled on foot, said the police.&nbsp;

But according to a pro-Palestinian NGO, the suspect was not silent.

The assailant opened fire after he began to shout at and harass the three men who were speaking Arabic, said the Institute for Middle East Understanding.

The police confirmed that two of the young men were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – when they were attacked.&nbsp;

The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents across the US since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime,” said Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, in a statement.&nbsp;

The local police chief said that they are already in touch with “federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners” to prepare for the next steps if the incident is proven to be a hate-motivated crime.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims</h2>

The victims were identified by their families as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdel Hamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmed, who attends Trinity College in Connecticut.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in&nbsp; northeast US.&nbsp;

Two of the students were visiting the home of the third student’s family in Burlington for Thanksgiving.

“Two are stable, while one has sustained much more serious injuries,” said the police speaking about their condition.&nbsp;

The victims’ families issued a joint statement urging the authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“As parents we are devastated by the horrific news that our children were targeted and shot,” said the victims’ families. It added, “We call on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.”

The advocacy group American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee also called for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent,” said ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub.&nbsp;

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called the attack “shocking and deeply upsetting,” adding, “hate has no place here, or anywhere.”

Fort Hamilton is a public elementary-middle school which caters to students from the largest Palestinian-American and Arabic communities in the state, reported the New York Post.&nbsp;

The controversial remarks by Rossicone were made in response to a Hamas video that the Israeli Army provided CNN of the Palestinian militant group’s October 7 attack on the Jewish state.&nbsp;

Around 45,000 campaigners participated in the rally on Saturday, as per police estimates, which took place on the second day of the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas. The recent truce marked the first pause in fighting giving some respite in the constant bombardment and fighting in the Palestinian enclave, but protesters said that was not enough.

“We need full support for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” 64-year-old protester Kate Hudson told Reuters at the rally which began from Park Lane and finished outside the Houses of Parliament.

"I am happy but my liberation came at the price of the blood of the martyrs," said Marah Bakir, 24, referring to the nearly 15,000 deaths across the Gaza Strip that its Hamas-led government says were caused by Israel's military offensive.

Freedom from "the four walls of the prison" is "magnificent", said Bakir, who had been in custody for eight years.

Israel's national security adviser on Thursday (Nov 23) said that the release of hostages held by Hamas, under a temporary truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant group, will not take place before Friday (Nov 24).

The official&nbsp;also added that there would be no pause in the Gaza fighting before Friday.

The starting time of the truce and release of hostages captured by Hamas during its October 7 assault on Israel had yet to be officially announced, however, as per news agency Reuters reports, an Egyptian security source had stated that the mediators aimed at a start time of 10 am on Thursday.

"The negotiations on the release of our hostages are advancing and continuing constantly," Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a statement released by the prime minister's office.

This came after journalists were notified that a media centre would open in Tel Aviv at noon on Thursday "to cover the return of the hostages".

"No one said there would be a release tomorrow except the media ... We had to make it clear that no release is planned before Friday, because of the uncertainty that hostages' families are facing," Israel's public broadcaster Kan quoted a source in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office as saying.
