The United States has dispatched a military ship laden with humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza, Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday (March 10).

This comes after US President Joe Biden announced during his State of the Union address&nbsp; that the US military will build a temporary aid port on Gaza's Mediterranean coast to provide humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave via sea.

General Frank S. Besson left Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia "less than 36 hours after President Biden announced the U.S. would provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza by sea," CENTCOM said in a statement.

The logistics support vessel is "carrying the first equipment to establish a temporary pier to deliver vital humanitarian supplies," it said.

There is no port infrastructure in Gaza. The US plans to use Cyprus initially, which is offering a procedure for screening of cargoes that will include Israeli officials, eliminating the need for security checks in Gaza.

Meanwhile, in a continued effort to secure the release of hostages still held captive in Gaza, the Israeli spy chief met with his US counterpart on Saturday (March 9), Tel Aviv said.

"The head of the Mossad, David Barnea, met yesterday (Friday) with the head of the CIA, Bill Burns, as part of the ceaseless efforts to advance another hostage release deal," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on behalf of the Mossad.

"Contacts and cooperation with the mediators continue all the time in an effort to narrow the gaps and reach agreements," said Mossad.

The statement comes amid mediators scrambling to secure a new ceasefire deal in the Gaza war before Ramadan which could begin as early as Sunday, depending on the lunar calendar.

"At this stage, Hamas is entrenching its positions like someone who is not interested in a deal and is striving to inflame the region during Ramadan at the expense of Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip," it said.

Mossad also stated that Hamas was aiming for unrest in the area to worsen during Ramadan.&nbsp;

Israeli officials have stated that the conflict between the warring sides would come to an end only with the defeat of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

"Ten minutes later I saw people transferring three martyrs and others injured, who were staying on the roof of the house where the aid packages fell," the 50-year-old told news agency AFP.

The government media office in Hamas-run Gaza, referring to the ones who died on Friday, said that the airdrops were "futile" and "not the best way for aid to enter."

The United States and Jordan are among the countries that have carried out airdrops in northern Gaza.

The situation in the besieged Palestinian enclave is dire, with over 2.3 million people displaced due to the ongoing Israeli offensive. There are also reports of people dying of malnutrition.

At least 11 people lost their lives after an Israeli strike hit tents housing displaced civilians near a hospital in the southern city of Rafah on Saturday (March 2), said Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

It further said that another 50 people were injured in the strike next to a hospital in the Tel Al-Sultan area of Rafah.

One of the deceased victims was a medic at the hospital and children were also injured in the blast, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in a statement.

"Eleven citizens were martyred and about 50 injured, including children, as a result of Israeli forces targeting tents of displaced people near the Emirati hospital," AFP quoted Qudra as saying.

One of the witnesses said that the strike hit a tent where people had taken shelter.&nbsp;

"The strike hit one tent, where people took shelter, directly, the shrapnel came inside the hospital where I and friends were sitting, we survived by a miracle," news agency Reuters quoted a witness as saying.

"Destruction is everywhere and there are many martyrs," said Rafah resident Belal Abu Jekhleh.

"Suddenly the glass shattered and a fire broke out. Everyone fled, some were martyred and others injured. I was injured in my hands and head, and my brother was also injured," he added.

The residence supposedly belonged to a man accused of carrying out an attack which led to the death of a British-Israeli mother and her two daughters in April in the occupied Palestinian territory.&nbsp;

The man, Moaz al-Masri who Israel accused was killed by IDF soldiers last May.&nbsp;

Israeli forces, which conducted overnight raids, arrested 55 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Palestinian organisation also said that the arrest operation was concentrated in the Hebron governorate where nearly two dozen people were detained.&nbsp;

Since the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ terror attack on southern Israel on October 7 which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza, there has been a major surge in violence in the occupied West Bank as well.&nbsp;

The official said that the negotiators were working "round the clock" in order to ensure the deal was secured by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"It will be a six-week ceasefire in Gaza starting today if Hamas agrees to release the defined category of vulnerable hostages... the sick, the wounded, elderly and women," the official said.

"I just want to kind of emphasize that we would have a ceasefire if Hamas addresses that final issue," he added.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that he was hoping there would be a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas by Ramadan as the conflict in the Gaza Strip intensifies.

"I'm hoping so, we're still working real hard on it. We're not there yet," Biden told reporters at the White House when asked if he expected a deal by Ramadan, which is set to begin in about a week.

The incident, as per Israel, began around 4:00 am (local time)&nbsp;when some 30 trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived&nbsp;in the Rimal neighbourhood and thousands of Palestinians rushed to the trucks passing&nbsp;an IDF checkpoint.&nbsp;

Israeli forces also claim that some Palestinians were&nbsp;run over by the trucks and that some vehicles&nbsp;managed to continue further north where&nbsp;armed men allegedly&nbsp;opened fire at the convoy near Rimal and looted it.

The UN estimates that 2.2 million people in Gaza amid Israel’s relentless military campaign to eliminate Hamas are threatened with famine, particularly in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave where destruction, fighting and looting make the delivery of food nearly impossible.&nbsp;

A report by the Times of Israel citing a&nbsp;military source said after the incident some people from the crowd began moving towards Israeli soldiers stationed in the area to&nbsp;coordinate entry of aid trucks&nbsp;to northern Gaza. Israeli cabinet to approve IDF's plans for Rafah ground offensive next week: Netanyahu

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday (Feb 24) that Israel's plans of building new settlements in occupied West Bank were "inconsistent with international law". He was speaking at a news conference in Buenos Aires. He said that the United States was "disappointed" after Israel's announcement and that construction of new settlements was counterproductive to enduring peace in the region.

"They're also inconsistent with international law. Our administration maintains a firm opposition to settlement expansion, and in our judgment this only weakens, doesn't strengthen, Israel's security," Blinken said.

Blinken's comment were also a signal that the US was returning to its longstanding policy, which was reversed by former US president Donald Trump.

In November 2019, Trump's then secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced that Washington no longer viewed Israel's settlements on West Bank land it captured in the 1967 Middle East war as "inconsistent with international law", a reversal of four decades of US policy.

The Biden administration has maintained that expansion of Israeli settlements was counterproductive to lasting peace. However, Blinken's comment was the first time a top official in the current administration said that expansion of settlements was inconsistent with international law.

Blinken's statement has come a day after Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich spoke of plans to greenlight 3300 homes to be built.

These include dismantling Hamas and Islamic Jihad and safeguarding the release of all hostages that are held captive in Gaza.

After the war comes to an end, Gaza's civil affairs would be run by "local officials with administrative experience" who are "not linked to countries or entities that support terrorism", the Times of Israel newspaper reported citing key elements of Netanyahu's plan.

“Any movement towards Israel’s withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza requires consideration for Israel’s very real security needs,” Richard Visek, acting legal adviser at the US State Department told the court.&nbsp;

He also noted that the UNGA had asked the UN court to opine on the consequences of Israeli occupation prior to Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.&nbsp;

“We were all reminded of those security needs on October 7, and they persist. Regrettably those needs have been ignored by many of the participants,” Visek added.&nbsp;

He called on the judges to stick to the established UN framework for the two-state solution.&nbsp;

Washington has been “engaging intensively” with Palestinians, Israel, and other states to not only address the current crisis in Gaza but also “a political settlement that will lead to a durable peace in the region that includes lasting security…and a path to Palestinian statehood,” said the acting legal adviser.&nbsp;

He added, “There is broad international support for achieving a negotiated solution to the conflict that will give rise to a Palestinian state.”&nbsp;

Therefore, the court “should not find that Israel is legally obligated to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from occupied territory,” said the US legal adviser.&nbsp;

Notably, the US amid protests and criticism of Israel’s military action in Gaza continues to back Israel, while President Joe Biden’s administration continues to insist on a two-state solution for the region. However, the leaders of the Jewish state do not agree with the same.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Flagrant violation of international law’</h2>

The UN top court also heard from Vladimir Tarabrin, Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands who spoke about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza while condemning the October 7 attack on Israel.&nbsp;

He went on to slam Israel’s retaliation to the attack and called it “collective punishment” which cannot be justified. Around 90 per cent of Gazans have been forced to leave their homes and they are living in inhumane conditions, said Tarabrin.&nbsp;

The Russian ambassador said&nbsp;the UN Security Council has agreed that Israeli settlements in the West Bank constitute a “flagrant violation of international law and a major obstacle to the two-state solution and a just and lasting peace”.&nbsp;

<h2>ICJ hearings on Israel’s occupation</h2>

The UN top court is hearing arguments from an unprecedented 52 countries on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands that will go on till February 26.&nbsp;

However, the ICJ has been asked not to opine on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied territories, but many states participating in the hearings have called on Israel to do so.&nbsp;

The 15-judge panel has around six months to issue their opinion on the request.&nbsp;

Israel, which is not participating in the hearings, said in a written statement that the UN court’s involvement could be harmful to achieving a negotiated settlement.&nbsp;

This is the highest-ever death toll reported since the year 2015 and also an increase of approximately 44 per cent on 2022's figures.

<h2>72 out of 77 journalists killed in war were Palestinians</h2>

The New York-based press freedom organisation highlighted that out of the 77 journalists killed in the Israel-Hamas war, 72 were Palestinians.

Three Lebanese and two Israelis were also killed.

"Journalists in Gaza are bearing witness on the frontlines," said CPJ chief executive Jodie Ginsberg.&nbsp;

"The immense loss suffered by Palestinian journalists in this war will have long-term impacts for journalism not just in the Palestinian territories but for the region and beyond. Every journalist killed is a further blow to our understanding of the world,"&nbsp;Ginsberg further said.

Earlier, on Feb 7, the organisation said that the number of journalists killed in the Gaza conflict had risen to 85.&nbsp;

CPJ has called it "persecution" of journalists by Israeli forces, and said that it was investigating if the journalists who lost their lives in the war were deliberately targeted by Israeli soldiers.

The United Nations aid chief on Thursday came under fire following a TV interview where he said that Palestinian militant group Hamas was "not a terrorist group for us."

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, during an interview with Sky News on Wednesday (Feb 14), said, “I’ve worked with many, many different terrorist and insurgent groups, Hamas is not a terrorist group for us, of course, as you know. It’s a political movement.”

Griffiths made the remarks on being asked if it was reasonable for Israel to insist that Hamas never be a member of a future Palestinian government.

“It is very, very difficult to dislodge these groups without a negotiated solution which includes their aspirations,” he added.

“If you want to have safety and security with people who are gonna inevitably continue to be your neighbour in some form or another, you are going to have to create a relationship based on some shared values,” he said in the interview.

After facing the backlash, he took to&nbsp;social media and put out a post clarifying his comments in the interview.&nbsp;

"Just to clarify: Hamas is not on the list of groups designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations Security Council," Griffiths said in a post on X.

Hezbollah, which is an ally of Hamas, has been exchanging fires with its arch-foe Israel since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7.

Nasrallah said that civilians were killed with the aim of "putting pressure" on Hezbollah to launch attacks on Israel, however, they emphasised that the group will intensify its ongoing cross-border firing.

The Israeli army said that the strikes were carried out on Feb 14 after a soldier lost his life in a rocket fired from Lebanon. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets which were fired at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona and said that this was their "first response" to the deadly Israeli strikes.

The Nasser Hospital had been largely cut off due to ongoing fighting in the vicinity for weeks.

On Wednesday, Israel announced that it had opened a corridor for the displaced Palestinians to flee. Thousands of such Palestinians were taking shelter at the hospital.

Hamas has denied the Israeli accusations of having held hostage inside and has called them "lies", Reuters news agency reported.

Early on Thursday and prior to the actual storming, reports said Israel forces fired into the hospital, killing one patient and wounding six others.&nbsp;

Also on Thursday, health ministry in the Gaza Strip said that cumulative death toll of Palestinians killed in the area since the Israel offensive started has reached 28,663.

Reuters reported that a Palestinian doctor shared a footage from inside that hospital in which gunshots could be heard and injured patients were being tended amid smoke and debris.

"We are attacked by the Israeli army at the hospital," before warning others to take cover from the gunfire." Dr Mohammed Harara reportedly says in the video.

The victims were identified as a Syrian woman and her child, aged two, and a stepchild, 13.

The agency said that another attack, which was targeted at the village of Adshit, left one person dead and injured 10 others. The Hezbollah group said that the deceased was one of its fighters.

The Israeli military released a statement saying that 20-year-old Sergeant Omer Sarah Benjo was killed "as a result of a (rocket) launch carried out from Lebanese territory on a base in northern Israel".

It said that the fighter jets had hit a series of "Hezbollah terror targets" in several areas of south Lebanon, including Adshit and Sawwaneh.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon kill 9 amid concerns over cross-border escalation

A court in the United Kingdom, on Tuesday (Feb 13) found three people guilty of a terror offence after they displayed images of paragliders at a pro-Palestine march in London a week after Hamas’ deadly October 7 attack on Israel.&nbsp;

The trio, identified as Heba Alhayek, 29, Pauline Ankunda, 26, and Noimutu Olayinka Taiwo, 27, were each handed a 12-month conditional discharge by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court.&nbsp;

“You crossed the line, but it would have been fair to say that emotions ran very high on this issue,” said Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram giving his verdict. He added, “Your lesson has been well learned.”

The protest took place a week after Hamas militants attacked Israel and killed nearly 1,200 people, according to Israeli officials, and took&nbsp;more than 240 others as hostages back to Gaza.&nbsp;

The three protesters were later charged under the UK’s Terrorism Act for carrying or displaying an article to cause&nbsp;reasonable suspicion that they were supporters of a banned organisation, in this case, Hamas. The trio had denied the charges against them.&nbsp;

The verdict followed a two-day trial where prosecutors argued it was “no coincidence” the defendants were displaying the images merely days after the attack.&nbsp;

However, lawyer Mark Summers KC for Alhayek and Ankunda, argued that the police were “mistaken” about what they saw that day and termed them images of cartoon parachutes which are a “well-known nationalist symbol of peace”.

The idea that the image was of a paraglider started with “an internet group with an agenda,” said KC.&nbsp;

“Seven days earlier, Hamas went into Israel with what was described by the media as paragliders. A reasonable person would have seen and read that,” said the district court judge.&nbsp;

He added, “I want to be clear, there’s no evidence that any of these defendants are supporters of Hamas, or were seeking to show support for them.”

The judge said he had “decided not to punish” the defendants while handing them the 12-month conditional discharge.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Glorification of the actions’ of Hamas</h2>

In response to the verdict, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that displaying the images amounted to the “glorification of the actions” of the Palestinian militant group.&nbsp;

“All three women knowingly displayed the images of paragliders in central London and therefore showed their support for Hamas – a proscribed terrorist organisation,” said Nick Price of CPS&nbsp;in a statement.

He added, “The fact that these images were being displayed in the context of a protest opposing the Israeli response to the Hamas attacks demonstrates a glorification of the actions taken by the group.”
