The prime minister made the statement as Western countries called for restraint in responding to a barrage of missiles and drones launched by Iran.

The United States, the G7 group of industrialised nations and the European Union announced that they will impose tougher sanctions on Iran, with the hope that Israel will avoid any retaliatory attack.

German and British Foreign Ministers, Annalena Baerbock and David Cameron, respectively,&nbsp;also travelled to Israel to stop the confrontation between Israel and Iran from escalating.&nbsp;

Addressing a meeting of his Cabinet on Wednesday (April 17), Netanyahu thanked both visiting foreign ministers for extending their support.

However, he said that Israel will make the call on its own on how it will respond despite “all sorts of suggestions and advice” coming from Israel’s allies, which include the United States, the United Kingdom and France.

“I want to be clear: we will make our decisions ourselves. The state of Israel will do whatever is necessary to defend itself,” said Netanyahu.

During his meetings with the German and British foreign ministers, Netanyahu’s office had earlier said that the prime minister “reiterated that Israel would maintain its right to self-defence.”

Israel has promised to respond to the unprecedented attack by Iran amid calls from other countries to exercise restraint.

In response, Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel, most of which were shot down and no deaths were reported.&nbsp;

Israel says will make its 'own decisions', hints at inevitable response to Iran attacks

The government of the United States on Tuesday (April 16) said that it will impose new sanctions on Iran's missile and drone programme in the wake of its weekend attack on Israel.&nbsp;

Washington DC further stated it is hoping that its allies and partners will follow with parallel measures.

"These new sanctions and other measures will continue a steady drumbeat of pressure to contain and degrade Iran's military capacity and effectiveness and confront the full range of its problematic behaviours," said US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, in a statement.

Jake Sullivan said that that sanctions would be unveiled “in the coming days” and added the US government has been co-ordinating with Group of Seven nations as well as other allies for a “comprehensive response.”&nbsp;

The sanctions, which will be imposed in the days ahead,&nbsp;will target the missile and drone programme of Iran as well as entities which support Iran’s Defence Ministry and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to Sullivan's statement.

Sullivan stated that they are expecting their allies and partners to impose similar sanctions. He said that the White House is working with US Central Command as well as the Department of Defence to improve early warning systems and air and missile defence across the Middle East.&nbsp;

Sullivan said he anticipates similar sanctions from allies and partners and that the White House is working with the Department of Defense and US&nbsp;Central Command to bolster air and missile defence and early warning systems throughout the Middle East “to further erode the effectiveness of Iran’s missile and UAV capabilities.”

<h2>EU to work towards expanding Iran sanctions: Borrell&nbsp;</h2>

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that some EU member states have appealed to expand sanctions against Iran and the diplomatic service of the bloc will start working on the proposal.

He added that the sanctions seeking to stop the supply of Iranian drones to Russia will be expanded and it will also include the provision of missiles and cover deliveries to proxies in the Middle East.&nbsp;

Germany, France and other EU member countries have been supporting the&nbsp;proposal of sanctions against Iran.

However, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that 99 per cent of the projectiles were intercepted by its air defence systems.&nbsp;

Since the attack, Iran has reiterated that it does not want to escalate tensions but warned that if Israel chooses to retaliate it will launch a “strong and fierce response”.

Israel has repeatedly said that it will retaliate against Iran’s attack over the weekend, which was seemingly confirmed yet again by the British foreign minister, on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Cameron, who is in the midst of a visit to Jerusalem said that he urged the Israeli leaders to do “as little as possible to escalate” tensions in the Middle East.&nbsp;

During his visit, Cameron also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said that he was there to “show solidarity after that appalling attack by Iran.”

“But the real need is to refocus back on Hamas, back on the hostages, back on getting the aid in, back on getting a pause in the conflict in Gaza,” said the UK foreign secretary.&nbsp;

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that she has made it&nbsp;clear during talks with Netanyahu in Jerusalem that the&nbsp;Middle East must not be allowed to slide into a situation whose outcome is completely unpredictable.&nbsp;

Pro-Palestinian protesters across the United States, on Monday (Apr 15) blocked roadways and disrupted traffic in major cities including the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, a highway Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, and even attempted to close down the Ambassador Bridge to Canada.&nbsp;

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge was shut down for hours, on Monday morning during rush hour, after pro-Palestinian activists protested the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The traffic was halted in both directions of the six-lane suspension bridge and came to a standstill after protesters chained themselves to parked vehicles. According to the California Highway Patrol, more than 30 people were arrested.&nbsp;

The actions of Iran were strongly condemned by the allies of Israel, however, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government was appealed by the countries to show some restraint.

Even though Iran has signalled they consider the matter closed, the Israeli military's chief of staff Lt Gen Herzi Halevi said that the attack will not go unanswered.

“This launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response,” said Halevi, while speaking from the Nevatim Air Force base in southern Israel, which also suffered a little damage in the attack.

Since the attack, this is the clearest confirmation given by Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt Gen Herzi Halevi that Israel would strike back.

Speaking to CNN on Monday (April 15), White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said, “We respect that that’s a decision the war cabinet, the prime minister, have to make. Speaking about this particular incident, the spokesperson also said that, on April 13, Iranian airspace was open for civilian air traffic without any restrictions or NOTAM,&nbsp;an alert issued by an aviation authority to pilots about the potential hazards along a route or on the ground.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the airline was also closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East, the spokesperson added.&nbsp;

As a part of its risk assessment, some flights heading to the West were planned on an alternative route which according to the spokesperson was a “safe corridor” being used by other airlines as well.&nbsp;

After Tehran attacked Israel, Air India and Vistara released a statement saying that they would avoid Iranian airspace in response to the Indian government’s advisory urging citizens to steer clear of travel to Iran.

And there's a deal on the table that would achieve much of what Hamas claims it wants to achieve. And they have not taken that deal," Miller told a press briefing.

“Hamas needs to take that deal and they need to explain to the world and to the Palestinian people why they aren't taking it. Because it is the Hamas, it is Hamas right now that is the barrier and the obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza,” he added.

The United States is currently pursuing a deal that would allow a truce deal lasting at least six weeks and let more aid into Gaza, added Miller.

Israel on Sunday (Apr 14) said that it will exact a price from Iran in response to its missile and drone strike when the timing is right.

Centrist war cabinet minister Benny Gantz said that Tel Aviv would build a regional coalition in the face of the Iranian threat.

<h2>G7 leaders condemn Iran</h2>

Leaders of the G7 nations on Sunday (Apr 14) denounced Iran's unprecedented attacks against Israel and said that they would work together in order to avert an "uncontrollable regional escalation" in the Middle East region.

Italy, which is the current holder of the G7 presidency, had called a virtual meeting of G7 leaders on Sunday (Apr 14). The development came after United States President Joe Biden vowed a coordinated diplomatic response to Iran's retaliatory drone and missile attack.

"With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided," a statement issued by Italy said.&nbsp;

The G7 heads demanded Iran to exert restraint.

"In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives," it said.

They also vowed to work "towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire" in Gaza.

We have repeatedly warned that the numerous unresolved crises in the Middle East, primarily in the area of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which are often fuelled by irresponsible provocative actions, will exacerbate tensions," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We call on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint. We believe it is important for the constructively-minded international players to contribute to this effort," the statement added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling for restraint said that further rise in the conflict was in no one's&nbsp;interest and that the countries should resolve conflict via political and diplomatic methods.

“The Iranian threat met the Israel Defense Force’s aerial and technological superiority together with a strong fighting coalition, that together intercepted most of the threats,” said IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari.&nbsp;

I don't fancy hearing about the chances of a Third World War breaking out in some random Instagram story, but that is what happened. We live in a world of frivolous predictions. But then, social media can make bad things worse. I just shrugged my shoulders and went on to Twitter-turned-X to find 'World War 3' actually trending with a hashtag.

After taking a deep breath, all I can say is that what we have just had is not the start of a new world war but one of the biggest screw-ups in diplomatic history.

By striking an Israeli ship and then launching a swarm of drone bombs on Israeli territory, the clerics and their fellow power-wielders in Tehran may have won some headlines that speak of revenge after an Israeli attack on an Iranian diplomatic consulate building in Damascus on April 1 that killed a commander and seven officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). But a simplistic retaliation is not quite an act of meaningful revenge. What we have had so far is Tel Aviv fending the drones off with its "Iron Dome" defence. Such stuff may have visual appeal for the odd video or social media memes, but we need to look deeper to see the implications and the impact of what Iran has done.

The simple fact is that for all practical purposes, Iran is ploughing a lonely furrow in trying to be the loud guardian of Palestinian people. There is no doubt that Israel's savage war against Palestinians in the aftermath of the Hamas attack on its people last October has caused an unspeakable human tragedy. The diplomatic pussyfooting by the so-called world powers in the aftermath is nothing if not a conspiracy of drift. We have not even got a real, temporary ceasefire yet while children are killed, hospitals are bombed, civilians are targeted and whole cities being razed to the ground in Gaza.

There is little doubt that Hamas has been acting in tandem with or as an agent for Iran's Shia Islamist regime. But discretion is not part of Iran's revolutionary valour. It likes to unfriend old pals and make new adversaries all the time. Since fighting a war with deposed president Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the 1980s, it has offended Saudi Arabia with its support for Houthi rebels in Yemen, and this year even launched cross-border attacks against rebels in Pakistan's Balochistan region.

Last January, Islamic State terrorists killed more than 80 people near the grave of General Qassem Soleimani on the fourth anniversary of his death in a US drone strike. Soleimani was a sworn enemy of the Sunni-Salafi-Jihadist Islamic State whose war on the Shia Islamists of Tehran is only one of the many twisted sub-plots in the Muslim world's checkered history of little and big enmities.

The best thing going for Iran so far (if one might call it that) is that China and Russia love anybody doing anti-US acts and therefore keep their diplomatic silence loud. But that is hardly what the doctor ordered for suffering Palestinians, whose basic survival is at stake. All talk of a two-state solution that would help the rise of a Palestinian state is but a desert mirage, an elusive dream and a theoretical prospect best left to television studio panels.

The ground reality suggests that Iran has only worsened the case for Palestinians. I am tempted to compare Israel's Damascus attack as one resembling the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai by Pakistan-based terrorists in 2008. What India did after that was not a simplistic military retaliation but an elaborate diplomatic counter-offensive. Armed with dossiers and evidence, it built up a case for Pakistan as a state that harbours terrorists. It won sympathy and diplomatic support across the world of a lasting kind that isolated Islamabad.

Iran, on the other hand, prefers primitive retaliation. I know that in normal diplomacy, tit-for-tat acts are considered in the league of expected military responses. But what we have in the asymmetry of power in West Asia is a complex grid of relationships that make simplistic acts of revenge futile at best, and disastrous at worst.

Just when the whole world was coming around to a broad consensus on restraining Israel, we have the prospect (indeed, a reality) of Israel gaining diplomatic legitimacy all over again. Tehran has to take the blame for this.

The mysterious death in 2022 of 22-year-old woman activist Mahsa Amini, targeted by Iran's religious morality police, is still fresh in the minds of the world. Whether it is events at home or its abrasive behaviour within the Muslim world, Iran is a difficult customer for any diplomatic exercise. It has enough adversaries within the Muslim world not to be seen as a power of any consequence in the world order.

In such a backdrop, what we are staring into is a scenario in which the US is standing up for Israel all over again, aided by its rich Western allies. US President Joe Biden, facing elections in a country famous for its wealthy Jewish lobby, said on Friday: "We are devoted to the defense of Israel, we will support Israel, we will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed."

So, who is the winner? Certainly not Iran. The drone attacks in retaliation for the Damascus hit can only be seen as a shaky act of bravado that has caused a diplomatic mess. That is bad news getting worse for Palestinians.

But then, social media can make bad things worse. I just shrugged my shoulders and went on to Twitter-turned-X to find 'World War 3' actually trending with a hashtag. After taking a deep breath, all I can say is that what we have just had is not the start of a new world war but one of the biggest screw-ups in diplomatic history. By striking an Israeli ship and then launching a swarm of drone bombs on Israeli territory, the clerics and their fellow power-wielders in Tehran may have won some headlines that speak of revenge after an Israeli attack on an Iranian diplomatic consulate building in Damascus on April 1 that killed a commander and seven officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). But a simplistic retaliation is not quite an act of meaningful revenge. What we have had so far is Tel Aviv fending the drones off with its "Iron Dome" defence. Such stuff may have visual appeal for the odd video or social media memes, but we need to look deeper to see the implications and the impact of what Iran has done. The simple fact is that for all practical purposes, Iran is ploughing a lonely furrow in trying to be the loud guardian of Palestinian people. There is no doubt that Israel's savage war against Palestinians in the aftermath of the Hamas attack on its people last October has caused an unspeakable human tragedy. The diplomatic pussyfooting by the so-called world powers in the aftermath is nothing if not a conspiracy of drift. We have not even got a real, temporary ceasefire yet while children are killed, hospitals are bombed, civilians are targeted and whole cities being razed to the ground in Gaza. There is little doubt that Hamas has been acting in tandem with or as an agent for Iran's Shia Islamist regime. But discretion is not part of Iran's revolutionary valour. It likes to unfriend old pals and make new adversaries all the time. Since fighting a war with deposed president Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the 1980s, it has offended Saudi Arabia with its support for Houthi rebels in Yemen, and this year even launched cross-border attacks against rebels in Pakistan's Balochistan region. Last January, Islamic State terrorists killed more than 80 people near the grave of General Qassem Soleimani on the fourth anniversary of his death in a US drone strike. Soleimani was a sworn enemy of the Sunni-Salafi-Jihadist Islamic State whose war on the Shia Islamists of Tehran is only one of the many twisted sub-plots in the Muslim world's checkered history of little and big enmities. The best thing going for Iran so far (if one might call it that) is that China and Russia love anybody doing anti-US acts and therefore keep their diplomatic silence loud. But that is hardly what the doctor ordered for suffering Palestinians, whose basic survival is at stake. All talk of a two-state solution that would help the rise of a Palestinian state is but a desert mirage, an elusive dream and a theoretical prospect best left to television studio panels. The ground reality suggests that Iran has only worsened the case for Palestinians. I am tempted to compare Israel's Damascus attack as one resembling the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai by Pakistan-based terrorists in 2008. What India did after that was not a simplistic military retaliation but an elaborate diplomatic counter-offensive. Armed with dossiers and evidence, it built up a case for Pakistan as a state that harbours terrorists. It won sympathy and diplomatic support across the world of a lasting kind that isolated Islamabad. Iran, on the other hand, prefers primitive retaliation. I know that in normal diplomacy, tit-for-tat acts are considered in the league of expected military responses. But what we have in the asymmetry of power in West Asia is a complex grid of relationships that make simplistic acts of revenge futile at best, and disastrous at worst. Just when the whole world was coming around to a broad consensus on restraining Israel, we have the prospect (indeed, a reality) of Israel gaining diplomatic legitimacy all over again. Tehran has to take the blame for this. The mysterious death in 2022 of 22-year-old woman activist Mahsa Amini, targeted by Iran's religious morality police, is still fresh in the minds of the world. Whether it is events at home or its abrasive behaviour within the Muslim world, Iran is a difficult customer for any diplomatic exercise. It has enough adversaries within the Muslim world not to be seen as a power of any consequence in the world order. In such a backdrop, what we are staring into is a scenario in which the US is standing up for Israel all over again, aided by its rich Western allies. US President Joe Biden, facing elections in a country famous for its wealthy Jewish lobby, said on Friday: "We are devoted to the defense of Israel, we will support Israel, we will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed." So, who is the winner? Certainly not Iran. The drone attacks in retaliation for the Damascus hit can only be seen as a shaky act of bravado that has caused a diplomatic mess. That is bad news getting worse for Palestinians. I don't see a Third World War. What I see is a human tragedy worsened by the diplomatic immaturity of a dubious friend of the Palestinian cause.

Poland's foreign ministry on Friday issued an advisory against travel to Israel, Palestine and Lebanon stating, "It cannot be ruled out that there will be a sudden escalation of military operations, which would cause significant difficulties in leaving these three countries."

"Any escalation may lead to significant restrictions in air traffic and the inability to cross land border crossings," the statement added.

The French foreign ministry on Friday released a statement on social media platform X stating that French citizens should avoid travelling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories.

The US on Thursday said that it had instructed its employees residing in Israel to avoid travelling outside of greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva areas.

"Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be'er Sheva areas until further notice," the U.S. embassy said in a security alert on its website on Thursday. "U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel."

Russia also issued an advisory against travelling to the Middle East, especially Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

"The tense situation in the Middle East region persists," said the foreign ministry.

<h2>Iran-Israel tensions</h2>

On Saturday night, Iran launched hundreds of kamikaze drones as well as cruise missiles towards Israel with explosions heard across Israel.&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that more than 300 drones and missiles were launched, but 99 per cent were intercepted.&nbsp;

“The Iranian threat met the Israel Defense Force’s aerial and technological superiority together with a strong fighting coalition, that together intercepted most of the threats,” said IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari.&nbsp;

He added, “We intercepted 99% of the threats launched towards Israel’s territory. This is a very significant strategic achievement.”&nbsp;

Iran, Sunday, also warned Israel of a larger attack on its territory should it choose to retaliate. “Our response will be much larger than tonight’s military action if Israel retaliates against Iran,” armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri told the state TV.&nbsp;

He also said that the United States has also been warned against any backing of Israeli retaliation as it would result in American bases being targeted.&nbsp;

The attack on Saturday is apparently a retaliation to what Iran called an Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria’s Damascus, on April 1 that killed seven IRGC officers. However, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the consulate attack.

US extends 'ironclad' commitment to Israel after Iran threatens to attack

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh confirmed that three of his sons and a number of grandchildren had been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday (Apr 10), in an interview. He also accused Israel of acting in “the spirit of revenge and murder.” 
 
Haniyeh, 61, who is based in Qatar, has 13 sons and daughters according to Hamas sources. He said in the interview that&nbsp;“the blood of my sons is not dearer than the blood of our people”.

Haniyeh, who was appointed to the top job of Hamas in 2017, travels between Turkey and Qatar’s capital Doha&nbsp;to avoid&nbsp;Israeli-imposed travel restrictions in Gaza and has been acting as a negotiator in the ceasefire negotiations as well as with Hamas’ main ally Iran.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Arabic, the Hamas leader confirmed the death of his sons saying that they were “martyred on the road to liberating Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

“Through the blood of the martyrs and the pain of the injured, we create hope, we create the future, we create independence and freedom for our people and our nation,” said Haniyeh.&nbsp;

An Israeli brigade is typically made up of a few thousand troops. According to the Israeli media, the brigade in question is tasked with securing the so-called Netzarim Corridor, which crosses Gaza from the Be’eri area in southern Israel to the Palestinian enclave’s coast.&nbsp;

A report by Anadolu news agency citing Palestinian sources said Israeli forces retreated from all western areas of Khan Younis city and remained stationed in the east.&nbsp;

The Israeli army completed its operation in Khan Younis and soldiers have completed their exit from there, reported Israel’s Channel 12.&nbsp;

However, it was not immediately clear if the withdrawal would delay a long-threatened incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah where more than a million Palestinians have sought refuge amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

The IDF also announced the death of four soldiers in the southern Gaza Strip, on Sunday. At least 604 soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the war on October 7, and 3,193 others have been injured, according to Israeli officials.&nbsp;

<h2>New round of ceasefire talks to be held in Cairo</h2>

On Saturday (Apr 6), the Palestinian militant group said that it would send a delegation to Cairo, Egypt, for a new round of ceasefire talks which are expected to begin on Sunday.&nbsp;

Hamas has reiterated its demands which it issued in the March 14 proposal before the UN Security Council (UNSC) which includes calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

On March 25, a resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Palestinian enclave and an unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza had passed in the UNSC.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, an Israeli delegation is also expected to head to the Egyptian capital city, on Sunday for talks aimed at renewing the stalled talks with Hamas over the release of hostages being held in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

<h2>No Gaza truce without release of hostages: Netanyahu</h2>

Israeli Prime Benjamin Netanyahu, on Sunday, said that Israel would not agree to a ceasefire until Hamas releases all the hostages being held in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

His comments came at the beginning of a weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem where he also said that despite growing international pressure, Israel would not give in to “extreme” demands from Hamas.&nbsp;

Egypt’s renowned visual artist Mohamed Abla returned a Goethe medal he won in 2022, in protest of what he described as Germany’s support for Israel in the ongoing war in Gaza.

“I am the Egyptian visual artist Mohamed Abla, founder of the Fayoum center for arts, and recipient of the Goethe prize, Germany’s highest honor. I decided today, officially and directly, to give up this medal and return it back to the German government,” Mohamed Abla said. “I cannot be proud that I received this medal. It no longer represents any importance to me, and for this reason I decided to return this medal back again,” he added.

As one of the first Arabs to receive this medal, Abla said it was a significant and honourable moment. However, he said, he felt there was a contradiction between the award and Germany's actions related to the war in Gaza.

“I was very happy with this medal, because I was the first Arab artist to receive it, and this was something that felt good. Also because I get to join a large list of artists around the world, over the course of 70 years, who have received this medal, it was an honorable thing and a plus (to my career),” Abla said

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said that Biden told Netanyahu to empower Israeli negotiators in Cairo so that the deal could be reached.

"This basic fact remains true: There would be a ceasefire in Gaza today had Hamas simply agreed to release this vulnerable category of hostages – the sick, wounded, elderly, and young women," the senior Biden official said.

"The onus is on Hamas to release the hostages and bring relief to the people of Gaza through a prolonged ceasefire," the official said. &nbsp;
