Before the mega auction in Bengaluru, here's looking at the remaining purse of all eight IPL franchises.

Remaining purse of all eight existing IPL franchises before mega auction

The IPL 2022 mega auction is less than a month away. During the recently-held IPL General Council Meeting, the BCCI finalised the auction date, i.e. February 12 and 13, as the showpiece event took place in Bengaluru. All eyes will be on the non-retained players, which comprises several marquee players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, David Warner, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan and the likes. Six of them will be picked by the two new IPL franchises -- Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- who have the luxury to choose three players each before the auction proceedings.

The IPL auction has always hogged the limelight, since 2008, as franchises shed a huge chunk of money on players from various countries or of different age bracket. Over the years, many rising talents or established names have earned big during the IPL auctions. Before the IPL 2022 auction kicks off in Bengaluru, here's a look at the most expensive players in each auction:

The list includes some marquee players such as MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Ben Stokes, Pat Cummins, Dinesh Karthik, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Morris and some underrated names -- Jaydev Unadkat, Varun Chakravarthy.

From MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Ben Stokes to Chris Morris: Most expensive players in IPL auction

From Rahul to Hardik: 6 players who can be picked by new teams and not enter IPL 2022 auction pool

The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council meeting took place on Tuesday (January 11). Apart from officially approving the two new IPL teams' entry -- i.e. RPSG group's Lucknow franchise and CVC Capital-owned Ahmedabad -- into the cash-rich league, TATA Group were declared as the title sponsors after Chinese mobile manufacturer VIVO's pullout. In addition, the venue and dates for the forthcoming IPL 2022 mega auction also got confirmed.

The upcoming mega auction is set to be two-day affair and will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. For the unversed, the two new IPL teams will get a chance to pick three players each from the non-retained list before the action in the mega auction. The likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, David Warner and many other top names haven't been retained by their respective franchises. Hence, the mega auction is keenly awaited among IPL loyalists all around the globe.

While many key decisions took place in the IPL GC meeting, nothing has been finalised when it comes to the venues for the IPL 2022 edition. The last two IPL seasons have been played largely in the UAE (with the 2020 season held entirely in UAE whereas last year's final leg also took place in the Middle East), this year's IPL season's scheduling will also test the BCCI as Covid-19 cases are on the rise in India. Thus, the board hasn't taken a call on the venues and will decide after monitoring the situation in March. The Sourav Ganguly-led board will get in touch with all the stakeholders and the government before a final call is made. At present, the third-wave scare is looming large in the country.

It is believed that if the situation doesn't improve by early March, BCCI will take a call, create a cluster to shift the tournament where there are four of five stadiums with no air travel.

IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru as dates confirmed after governing council meeting

David Warner had a disastrous run for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2021. Starting the 14th edition as the Hyderabad skipper, Warner was slammed for his captaincy and below-par strike-rate with the bat before he was sacked as skipper, being replaced by Kane Williamson, and soon lost his spot in the playing XI.

Warner got only a few chances in IPL 14's final leg in the UAE, however, he failed to get going. Thus, he was out of contention before Hyderabad was officially eliminated from the playoffs race. IPL 2021 became the first-ever season where Warner couldn't cross the 500-run mark for the franchise ever since joining them in 2014. He ended with only 195 runs in 8 games and his relationship with the team management went downhill as the season progressed. While he wasn't been retained by the franchise and is set to be one of the most-wanted players in the IPL 2022 mega auction, the Aussie opener recently shared his doubts whether Hyderabad would've a good mega auction or not.

David Warner doubts SRH will do well in IPL 2022 auction, franchise comes up with savage response

The mega auction for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is keenly awaited. Countdown begins! IPL 2022 mega auction likely to be held on Feb 7 and 8 in Bengaluru: Report

Covid-19 pandemic is not yet over. The world has been through a lot ever since the pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe in early 2020. Just when one and all thought that they were in control of the Covid-19 crisis, another variant has emerged out of nowhere, i.e. the Omicron variant. Thus, things are again going out of hand with rising cases and panic across the globe.

In India, the cases are rising at a some pace and things are expected to get worse by early February, with many speculating a third wave by then. Hence, once again many top political gatherings, big-ticket events and sporting tournaments can get affected due to the Omicron variant. In this regard, the IPL 2022 edition can also get severely dented and, hence, the BCCI is looking to discuss Plan B with all franchises and can go ahead with conducting the mega tournament in only three cities.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI is looking to call a meeting with franchise owners in January, 2022 where they can discuss and prepare an alternate strategy to conduct the 15th edition of the league. Though the primary objective remains to host the tournament across the country in the usual home-away format, the Omicron threat can cause severe problems.

As per the portal, the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI is eyeing to begin the 15th edition on April 02 next year in Chennai. However, if the situation worsens due to the Omicron scare, the board might contemplate organising the tournament in just one or two states.

"The meeting will be mainly introductory in nature with the BCCI on-boarding the owners of the two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. They are also exploring the idea of holding the whole tournament just in Mumbai and Pune or in the Gujarat cities of Ahmedabad, Baroda and Rajkot if the Covid/Omicron situation worsens. IPL retention: Anil Kumble reveals PBKS wanted to retain KL Rahul, explains why star batter 'decided to leave'

All the eight existing IPL franchises released their retention list on Tuesday evening (November 30). The three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) retained the likes of former skipper Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and speedster Mohammed Siraj.

Hence, some popular names such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, etc. weren't retained. Nonetheless, the Bengaluru franchise will now look to rebuild and form a new-look RCB line-up in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction. Apart from bringing in some new faces, RCB will also have to name Kohli's successor.

Kohli, the leading run-getter in IPL history (6,283) runs, stepped down as RCB captain following the end of IPL 2021. He had already announced that the IPL 14's UAE leg will be his last as the franchise's skipper. Thus, the team management will have to name his successor sooner than later.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo about RCB's decision to retain three key campaigners on the retention day, ex-Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori suggested that Glenn Maxwell can be Kohli's successor. "Look, I think Maxwell will be the likely heir to Kohli. He obviously produced [results] in this last year and he was an exceptional player for them. He has the experience of captaining the Melbourne Stars. We talked about most teams wanting to find a captain in their retained players. It has happened too often that teams know they've got a captain, they know they can lock that away and they don't have to find one in the auction which can cloud your thinking at times," Vettori said.

"I do believe Maxwell will be named captain. It could be [for] just one season, to see how it goes but it's a pretty good stop-gap measure as they build to the future," Vettori added.

Speaking about Kohli's stint as RCB captain, he led the side to the playoffs in 2015, 2020 and 2021 and to their third final during the 2016 season. It will be interesting to see if Maxwell is given the top job or whether the Bengaluru team management will rope in someone from the auction to be Kohli's successor.

David Warner joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in 2014. Soon, he became a regular in the line-up and led the side to their solitary title in the 2016 edition. Warner remained the face of the franchise ever since but an ordinary season in the IPL 2021 edition, where he also had some issues with the team management, took things downhill and the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't been retained by the SRH franchise.

All the eight existing IPL franchises shared their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). SRH have retained only three players, such as captain Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and pacer Umran Malik. Hence, along with Warner, the Hyderabad franchise also released the likes of Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jonny Bairstow.

The D-day is finally here. After many speculations, the cricket fans will finally get to know about the list of retained players by all existing IPL franchises ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 edition. While couple of players are surely to be retained by their respective franchises, expect some big names to enter the auction pool as all teams can only retain four players each.

As per the rules, all the eight teams can retain four players -- three Indians and a foreign player or two Indians and overseas players each -- but it isn't necessary that all the non-retained players will enter the IPL 2022 mega auction. For the unversed, the two new teams -- in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- will have an option to choose three players each from the non-retained list before the auction.

The eight IPL teams won't have the luxury to use Right To Match (RTM) cards on their non-retained players in the auction table. Hence, they will have to rebuy the players not retained, thus, it will be a tough call for all eight franchises to wisely finalise their retained list.

IPL 2022 retention ahead of mega auction: Where to live streaming in India?

The IPL 2022 edition is keenly awaited. The upcoming season will see two new teams joining the cash-rich league, in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Ahead of the next year's IPL season, the mega auction will take place -- most likely in January, 2022 -- as many marquee players will enter the auction pool whereas many youngsters will get a chance to feature in the IPL.

Ahead of the mega auction, all the eight existing franchises have to share their list of retained players, maximum by November 30 (Tuesday). As per the rules, each franchise can retain a maximum of four players -- three Indians and one foreign player of two Indian and overseas players each. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his list of four players who are likely to be retained by the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Pathan told Star Sports, "Sanju Samson for sure, second number will be Jos Buttler because he's been in fantastic form, one of the best hitters going around especially if you are talking about white ball cricket, so you don't want to miss out on that wicket-keeper batsman, who can bat up the order and down the order as well.

"The other guy, people might be tempted for Ben Stokes because he's a wonderful all-rounder, but I think I would put Jofra Archer in the same category as Jasprith Bumrah because you don't find many bowlers like that. So, I definitely would like Rajasthan Royals to retain Jofra Archer, and the fourth one, I am very tempted for Yashasvi Jaiswal because he's a young guy, who’s shown a lot of potential, and he could be the guy you could invest in.”

For the unversed, a report in ESPNcrinfo had recently suggested that RR have retained their skipper Samson for a whopping price. It remains to be seen how many players will the one-time champions retain ahead of the mega auction.

If Pathan's prediction comes true for RR, Ben Stokes might enter the auction pool and grab a mammoth deal by either of the two new teams or from the existing franchises. Meanwhile, many other players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Pandya brothers, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. are expected to make heads turn in the IPL 2022 auction (if not retained by their current franchises).

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has given an update on whether he will play for CSK in the Indian Premier League 2022. On Saturday, during an event in Chennai, the former Indian skipper said that there is a lot of time and he will "think" about it.

CSK won the IPL 2021 after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs. The team clinched its fourth IPL title. However, the scenario will be different in the next edition of the cash-rich league as there will be a mega auction and two teams will also place their bids.

The existing IPL franchises will be able to retain a maximum of four players and fans are expecting that Dhoni will be CSK's first choice. However, the former cricketer said, "I will think about it, there is a lot of time, right now we are just in November. IPL 2022 will be played in April," said Dhoni at an event.

During the event, he also said that hopefully, his last T20 match "will be in Chennai" but he added, "whether it's next year or in five-years-time, we don't really know".

Dhoni has been the face of CSK ever since the league started. He enjoys a massive fan following and fans fondly call him 'Thala', which means head or leader in Tamil.

Dhoni was also asked about his IPL future with CSK after IPL 2021 final, when he said, "Again I've said it before, it depends on BCCI. With two new teams coming in, we have to decide what is good for CSK. It's not about me being there in top-three or four. It's about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn't suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years."

When the presenter asked Dhoni has about the legacy he has left behind at CSK, Dhoni cheekily waits for the sentence to be completed and responded "Well, I still haven't left behind (smiles)."

The fans were quite relieved then, but what will happen, the mega auction will tell.
