What does Facebook say happened?

In an apologetic blog post, Santosh Janardhan, Facebook's vice president of infrastructure, said that "configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centres caused issues that interrupted this communication".

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp services down for users

That space is filled with breathtaking visual treats is something that is commonly known. But who knew space sounded divine? We may have grown up on tv shows and movies using the usual zip-zap-zoom to represent what they thought were sounds in space. But now NASA has put all speculations to rest by posting a video that is simply marvellous.

The video contains sound coming from centre of our milky way galaxy. The amazing and soothing sound clip posted by NASA is sure to keep you transfixed and even put you in a zen mode. The sound clip has been made using a technique called data sonification.

"...This sonification of the Milky Way's center combines data from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Spac Telescope, and @nasachandraxray...." says NASA in its Instagram post.

"...The light of objects located towards the top of the image is pitched higher, while the intensity of the light controls the volume. Stars and compact sources are converted to individual notes while extended clouds of gas and dust produce an evolving drone," the space agency explains further.

Listen to the sublime cosmic music

That space is filled with breathtaking visual treats is something that is commonly known. But who knew space sounded divine? We may have grown up on tv shows and movies using the usual zip-zap-zoom to represent what they thought were sounds in space.

Urfi Javed may have millions of followers on social media, thanks to her fashion videos and glamourous photoshoots. But, at heart, she is an actor. The Bigg Boss contestant explains, "I was an actor first , I became a content creator later." In a recently done interview, Urfi Javed talks about her content creation journey with MOJ, her love for acting, and many more. Read on! How did you make your entry into the entertainment industry? I was an actor first , I became a content creator later . I had already worked in a few serials ! Gradually I started making videos to pass my time in between shoots and then in the lockdown I started stitching clothes and that got me recognition. Then, Big Boss happened. I didn't take time to say yes to Bigg Boss. I had seen Bigg Boss since childhood and I was excited to be a part of it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Urfi (@urf7i) × How has your journey been as a content creator? I am enjoying this alot. I have been very passionate about creating content and want to continue more content as I go along. I want to entertain my fans through this. I am still learning and growing. Would you say your time as a content creator helped you make bigger leaps in this industry? Yes, I want to keep working hard & take one day at a time and see what comes to me and how I respond to it. I am very excited for the present actually, I just want to keep working and welcome all the opportunities that come to me. I would say content creation gave me a lot of learning on acting and entertainment. Now that you have made it to the Bigg Boss house, what's next for you? As I said I was an actor first and that is my first love. My first priority is acting but I would never leave content creation because I love fashion and making videos too! I can do both.
You may have seen aurora in person if you ever happened to go to Scandinavian countries or far in the southern hemisphere. The photos are aplenty. It's possible for most of us to witness them once in life, at least dream of it. But watching the mesmerising play of aurora from above it is a fortune only astronauts may have.

And in times of social media, it has become possible for them to share the wonderful experience with all of us. Thomas Pesquet, the European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut has done just the same from his perch on International Space Station (ISS). He has posted a picture of aurora, not with sky in its background but Earth! This adds another one to what is a soothing play of colours.

In Pesquet's photo, the blue Earth appears bathed in colour green. The waves dance, rise up and reach the horizon where they change colour to red.

"Another aurora but this one is special as it is so bright. It is the full Moon lighting up the shadow side of Earth almost like daylight." writes Pesquet in his post on Instagram.

Aurora is formed due to interaction between solar particles and particles of Earth's atmosphere. You may have seen aurora in person if you ever happened to go to Scandinavian countries or far in the southern hemisphere. The photos are aplenty. It's possible for most of us to witness them once in life, at least dream of it.

Facebook said on Monday that it had paused development of an “Instagram Kids” service that would be tailored for children 13 years old or younger amid questions about the app’s effect on young people’s mental health.

The announcement comes ahead of a congressional hearing this week about internal research conducted by Facebook, and reported in The Wall Street Journal, that showed the harmful mental health effects Instagram was having on teenage girls.

Facebook said it still wanted to build an Instagram product intended for children that would have a more “age appropriate experience,” but was postponing the plans in the face of the outside criticism.

“This will give us time to work with parents, experts, policymakers and regulators, to listen to their concerns, and to demonstrate the value and importance of this project for younger teens online today,” Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, wrote in a blog post.

Facebook has argued that young people are using Instagram anyway, despite age-requirement rules, so it would be better to develop a version more suitable for them. Facebook said the “kids” app was intended for those age 10 to 12 and would require parental permission to join, forgo ads and carry more age-appropriate content and features. Parents would be able to control what accounts their child followed. YouTube, which is owned by Google, has released a children’s version of its app.

But since it became public earlier this year that Facebook was working on the app, the company has faced criticism from policymakers, regulators, child safety groups and consumer rights groups. They have argued that it hooks them on the app at a younger age rather than protecting them from problems with the service, including child predatory grooming, bullying and body shaming.

Opposition to Facebook’s plans gained momentum this month when The Journal published a series of articles based on leaked internal documents that showed Facebook knew about many of the harms it was causing. Facebook’s internal research showed that Instagram, in particular, had a negative mental health effect on young people, especially young girls, even while company executives publicly tried to minimize the app’s downsides.

“We need to keep going and ensure this pause becomes permanent,” said Josh Golin, executive director of Fairplay, a Boston-based group that was part of an international coalition of children’s and consumer groups opposed to the new app. “This is a watershed moment for the growing tech accountability movement.”

American policymakers should pass tougher laws to restrict how tech platforms target children, Golin said. Britain adopted an “Age Appropriate Design Code” last year that requires added privacy protections for digital services used by people under the age of 18.

Golin called on Facebook to conduct a major public education campaign to tell parents to get their children under the age of 13 off Instagram.

On Thursday, Facebook’s global head of safety, Antigone Davis, is scheduled to testify at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing titled “Protecting Kids Online: Facebook, Instagram, and Mental Health Harms.” Davis will be questioned about Facebook’s research into the impact of its apps on young people and its work to address risks to young users.

Mosseri cast the internal research in a positive light, saying it is used to help guide product decisions, including new feature that allow people to pause their account or block certain words that could be used for bullying or harassment.

Facebook is delaying an Instagram app for users under the age of 13

Seems like being `Instagram Official` has some other definition for star couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck as despite being rekindling the romance and uploading picture together, the two are not following each other on the popular app.

Bennifer 2.0 has managed to grab all the headlines with their public outings and PDA without even clicking follow on the other`s Instagram accounts, and interestingly nobody noticed until now.

It's back in July when Jennifer made her relationship Instagram official with Ben. On her birthday- July 24, she uploaded a picture that featured the duo packing on lips at a yacht.

Earlier that month, `The Boy Next Door` actor also liked a photo of Ben on a fan account, according to TMZ.
Other than these, the actors haven`t liked or tagged each other in any one of their posts on Instagram. Seems like, they certainly have other ways to show love for each other. Despite their busy schedules, the pair prioritizes time with their families.

This weekend, the couple brought their families together for an outdoor screening of School of Rock in Los Angeles, according to Page Six.

Bennifer also made their red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 10, years after getting back together. A few days later, they made heads turn with their Monday night`s Met Gala appearance in New York City.

A source told People magazine that amid their string of high-profile outings, the duo was enjoying their day-to-day lives and looking forward to their various work-related commitments this fall. The two were engaged in 2002 but split in 2004.

They co-starred in the films `Jersey Girl` and `Gigli` together. They postponed their 2003 wedding days before they were set to walk down the aisle, and then officially split by January 2004. The `I`m Real` songstress recently ended her engagement with former MLB star Alex Rodriguez.

Meanwhile, Ben split with actor Ana de Armas in January. Jennifer shares 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Ben shares three children, 15-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Seraphina, and 9-year-old Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

Leaked documents from Facebook have revealed how the company's picture sharing platform Instagram is pushing teenagers towards anxiety and suicide. But the company chose to keep the internal findings hidden. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Facebook knew Instagram is toxic for teenagers

Gravitas: Facebook knew Instagram is toxic for teenagers

Social media giant Facebook has found that its Instagram app is harmful to a number of teenagers on multiple occasions.

According to internal Facebook documents obtained by The Wall Street Journal, Facebook has been studying how its Instagram photo-sharing app affects the mental health of its millions of young users for the last three years, and the firm's researchers have repeatedly found that Instagram is toxic to a sizable percentage of them, particularly teenage girls.

"We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls," said one slide from a 2019 presentation by researchers that was posted to Facebook’s internal message board and viewed by the WSJ.

According to one internal Facebook presentation, among teens who reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of American users blamed Instagram.

According to Facebook, 14% of boys in the United States said Instagram made them feel bad about themselves.

"Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse," the researchers reportedly wrote.

While Facebook concluded that a large percentage of teenagers are not negatively impacted by Instagram, the Journal reports that the features identified as the most harmful are part of the social media company's core makeup.

According to the report, researchers warned that Instagram's Explore page, which serves users curated posts from a variety of accounts, can lead users to potentially harmful content.

The app also has a culture of only posting the best pictures and moments, and it is a highly addictive product.

Facebook documents show how toxic Instagram is for teens: Reports

It's no more a secret Matt! Fans are convinced that they have discovered Hollywood actor Matt Damon's secret Instagram account and it seems the star himself has unwittingly blown the lid.

Internet sleuth has figured out Damon's Instagram account almost immediately after the actor announced its existence.

Turns out that the actor revealed in an in-depth GQ interview published Wednesday that he ran a "very private Instagram account."

The actor has previously stated his aversion to social media and Damon said he only used his Insta profile to see his friends’ kids growing up around the world. He only occasionally used it to share a post of his own.

"I have 76 followers and I’ve done 40 posts since 2013," explained the social media chameleon, before showing interviewer Chris Heath an Insta-pic of his 15-year-old daughter Isabella brandishing two middle fingers.

That was enough clue for Internet Sherlocks to figure out the star's profile on the picture sharing app.

"i found matt damon’s finsta and honestly it shouldn’t have taken an hour," tweeted one fan and shared a screenshot of a profile whose name features a concealed anagram for 'Matt Damon.' The follower and post counts were exactly what the movie star mentioned in the interview.

Virat Kohli is synonymous to breaking records, on and off the field. While the 32-year-old Indian captain might not be going through his best phase with the bat for Team India, he still became the fastest to register 23,000 international runs during Day 1 of the fourth Test between India and England on Thursday (September 2), at Kennington Oval, London.

Ahead of the second day's play, Kohli attained another huge milestone as he became the first Asian, as well as the first cricketing celebrity, to touch the 150 million mark on Instagram. For the unversed, Kohli has now become the fourth among sporting celebrities to have reached the 150 million mark on the photo-blogging portal.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo - 337 million

2) Lionel Messi - 260 million

3) Neymar Jr - 160 million

Thus, Kohli continues to impress and leave his ardent fans absolutely stunned by his presence, both on and off the field. The Indian skipper is very active on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, where he often shares workout videos, adorable posts with his wife Anushka Sharma and family members along with the promotion of various products he endorses, in return for a hefty amount.

Talking about Kohli-led India, the visitors will be desperate to wrap up England's first innings for cheap on Day 2 of the fourth Test on Friday (September 3). Losing the toss, India were asked to bat first but managed only a paltry 191 riding on half-centuries from Kohli (50) and Shardul Thakur (57).

The five-match series is currently levelled at 1-1.

The milk crate challenge that involves walking over a pyramid of precariously balanced milk crates has gone viral on social media. TikTok and other social media sites have been flooded in recent days by videos of people in the United States and beyond trying, and mostly failing, the climb the crates. Most videos end with what looks like a painful fall onto the collapsing crates, or the ground, as onlookers film on their phones in what some dubbed an event in the "Hood Olympics." WhatsApp is doing a Snapchat: Facebook-owned messaging service rolls out option for disappearing photos, videos

Facebook said on Tuesday that it will stop advertisers from targetting users under 18 years based on their activity on other sites. There was a slew of announcements about young users from the social media giant.

The new decision means that advertisers will soon be able to send targetted ads to under 18s only by age, gender or location on Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

In a blog post, Instagram said it was making the change because it agreed with youth advocates that young people might not be equipped to make decisions about targeting.

A Facebook spokesman said there would be no changes to the user data the company collects.

The company said that Instagram users under 16 years will be defaulted into having a private account when they join the platform. This will be in an effort to stop unwanted contact from adults.

They will still be given the option, however, to switch to a public account and current users can keep their account public.

Facebook's approach to younger users has been in the spotlight after US lawmakers and attorneys general slammed its leaked plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under 13. Earlier this year, a group of more than 40 state attorneys general wrote to CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking him to ditch the idea.

The company said on Tuesday it was working on an "Instagram experience for tweens." It has said the idea of a youth-focused app is to provide parents greater transparency and controls on what younger children who want to access Instagram are doing.

Several major social media companies have also rolled out versions of their apps for younger audiences, from Facebook's Messenger Kids to Alphabet Inc-owned YouTube Kids.

Proponents argue that children are already on a platform and so a family-friendly version provides a safer environment, but critics say Facebook should not be trying to hook young kids on its services due to risks to their development, mental health and privacy.

Age verification of children is an issue on many social media sites, which prohibit kids under 13 but often fail to identify and remove underage users. In a separate blog on Tuesday, Facebook's head of youth products, Pavni Diwanji, said it was using artificial intelligence to improve this verification and remove underage accounts.

To make the social media platform a friendlier yet safer place for children, Instagram has decided to launch some safety changes in the app.

To catch "suspicious behaviour", Instagram is rolling out software updates in Australia, Japan, France, the US and the UK. This update in the software will catch any adult trying to illegally connect with underage children through the platform.

"Wherever we can, we want to stop young people from hearing from adults they don’t know, or that they don’t want to hear from," Instagram said in a blog post.

This has come after the Facebook-owned platform decided to introduce a similar app tailored for children only.

Now, in the new safety features, all the accounts created for underage children will be set to "private" mode by default instead of being given the option to make it public or private. This will help limit the audience of underage children.

The underage children who already have public accounts will be alerted with notifications and tutorials of making their account private and also the importance of keeping a limited audience.

"Encouraging young people to have private accounts is a big step in the right direction when it comes to stopping unwanted contact from adults," Instagram said. "But we're going even further to make young people's accounts difficult to find for certain adults."

In addition to this, Instagram will also keep a look out for all suspicious accounts, mainly those blocked or reported by children. "By 'potentially suspicious behavior,' we mean accounts belonging to adults that may have recently been blocked or reported by a young person for example," Instagram explained.

All the adult accounts that have been blocked or reported even once for such reasons will not be allowed to follow young people and will also not be able to view any content from the accounts of young people.
