<p>Wicket-keeper Taniya Bhatia, who has an unimpressive strike rate of under-100 in the T20 format, was on Monday named in the Indian women's squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games while dashing batter Richa Ghosh has been put in the stand-by list.</p>

<p>The most notable player to make a comeback to the national fold is all-rounder Sneh Rana, who didn't play in the Sri Lanka series owing to an injury which kept her at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for rehabilitation.</p>

<p>The Harmanpreet kaur-led team will have converted keeper Yastika Bhatia as the first-choice stumper. Taniya's selection was surprising as the Neetu David-led selection committee has brought back a keeper-batter, who has in all totalled 166 runs in 22 innings at an average of 9.72 with a strike-rate of 94.</p>

Harmanpreet Kaur to lead Team India in Commonwealth Games as BCCI announces 15-member squad

<p>The Indian women's team dominated from start to finish, with both the bat and ball, to hammer Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the second ODI and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series here on Monday. It is worth mentioning that the Indian team's openers fired for the first time on the tour, sharing a partnership of 174 runs to see the visitors home in just 25.4 overs and finally managing to silence their detractors after being pilloried for their below-par show.</p>

<p>It is the highest target successfully chased without losing a wicket in women's ODIs. The bowlers set it up for the tourists by dismissing Sri Lanka for 173, and after that, Smriti Mandhana's stroke-filled 94 off 83 balls and Shafali Verma's run-a-ball 71 paved the way for the convincing win.</p>

<p>The experienced Mandhana struck 11 boundaries and a six in her blazing knock, while Verma found the fence four times and cleared it once. After having won the first ODI comfortably, the Indians came into the second game as firm favourites against a wobbly Sri Lankan side. Adding to the visitors confidence was the fact that they also triumphed in the preceding three-match T20I series.</p>

<p>After winning the toss, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur asked Sri Lanka to bat first on a surface in favourable conditions for the bowlers. The hosts soon found themselves in all sorts of trouble as pacer Renuka Singh was on point with her lengths from the word go.</p>

<p>The 26-year-old reigned supreme with the ball, with a career-best 4 for 28, rattling the Sri Lankan top-order with three quick strikes. Even as wickets fell at regular intervals, lower-order batter Ama Kanchana held fort for the hosts with an unbeaten 47 off 83 balls. Seasoned off-spinner Deepti Sharma's two wickets off the last two balls helped India bowl out the Lankans.</p>

"We didn't have to tell them much. It was just about following our game plan as a bowling unit and sticking to it. We knew one or two wickets here and there will get us back in the game. "Our bowlers were really patient with it. Definitely, we leaked a few runs with some misfields here and there but I'm sure we will come back stronger." The Indian spin attack, on the other hand, had the likes of Deepti Sharma, Poonam Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Radha Yadav. During her knock of 34-ball 39, Mandhana became the second-fastest Indian woman to score 2,000 runs T20I runs. She reached the feat in her 84th innings, becoming the third Indian woman after the legendary Mithali Raj (70 innings) and current skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (88 innings) to cross the mark. Mandhana and her opening partner Shafali Verma got off to a flier and the left-hander said it was about backing their strengths. "Me and Shafali had a game plan going today. We knew which bowlers to target, we know each other's strengths and weaknesses, it was about our strengths," she said. "Later on after the power-play, it was more about singles and doubles and not whom to attack as we had only 126 to get. It was about rotating strike and dealing in one and twos." Mandhana said the wicket was difficult to bat on. "It was keeping a bit low, and of course it was on the slower side. So it wasn't an easy pitch to bat on. You had to really work hard on your runs but once you get used to the pace and bounce of the wicket, runs came in," she concluded. The final match of the T20I series is slated on Monday, before the three-match ODI series begins at Pallekele on July 1.

From feud with coach to slamming CoA member: When Mithali Raj controversy rocked Indian women's cricket

<p>Former Indian women's team captain Mithali Raj announced her decision to retire from international cricket on Wednesday (June 08). One of the greatest servants of Indian cricket, Raj is one of the most successful cricketers to have played for the Indian women's cricket team and is also regarded as an all-time great. In an illustrious career spanning over two decades, she won numerous matches and tournaments for India with her heroics with the bat.</p>

<p>Besides being one of the strongest pillars of the Indian batting line-up for a number of years in women's cricket, Raj was also an exceptional leader and holds the record for leading in most ODIs as captain in women's cricket history. She was a calm and composed leader both on and off the field and led the team from the front.</p>

<p>While she liked to stay away from the limelight during her playing days, Raj had once stumped a reporter with a brilliant response after being asked a rather sexist question. The incident happened during a press conference ahead of the Women's ODI World Cup in 2017 when Raj was the captain of the Indian team.</p>

<p>During the press conference, a reporter asked who was her favourite male cricketer. Raj was not at all impressed by the journalist's query and responded by asking him if he would ask a similar question to one of the male cricketers about their favourite female cricketers.</p>

<p>"I have always been asked who's your favourite cricketer but you should ask them who their favourite female cricketer is," Raj had said at the press conference.</p>

Mithali Raj's career in numbers - An undisputed legend of Indian cricket

<p>Former captain Anjum Chopra believes India were never among the title contenders at the just concluded Women's World Cup and going forward, she wants the team to "emerge from a legacy of poor decision-making" to turn the corner.</p>

<p>India's underwhelming show at the ICC showpiece in New Zealand ended with a heartbreaking loss to South Africa in the group stage.</p>

<p>"It is time women's cricket emerges from legacy of poor decision making and be honest about what they want to do and how they want to do going forward. Otherwise, we will remain a near about team, we will never get there," Chopra told PTI in an exclusive interview.</p>

<p>Expectations were high after the runners-up finish in the previous World Cup five years ago but Chopra, who watched the action from the sidelines as a commentator, feels that the Mithali Raj-led squad never looked winning the trophy in the lead up to the mega event.</p>

<p>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/lord-of-all-lords-ex-india-cricketer-lauds-liam-livingstone-after-all-round-show-against-csk-468256" hreflang="en">'Lord of all lords': Ex-India cricketer lauds Livingstone after all-round show</a></p>

<p>India were the only team to get a bilateral series against hosts New Zealand ahead of the World Cup but they could still not get fully used to the conditions and zero in on a settled combination.</p>

<p>"I won't say India played poorly. They played a few ordinary matches where they could have performed better. "I would say the kind of preparation and kind of skill the players showed prior to the World cup (against NZ) to getting into the World Cup, it was surprising to see the approach against Pakistan, the way they batted (though they won).</p>

<p>"It was surprising decision making (opting to bowl) against New Zealand . Coming to a particular country well in advance, paying six games and if you are still unaware of the conditions, it would be unfair to say that India played poorly, I would say they were not in the contest," Chopra said.</p>

<p>India failed to beat any of the SENA teams including England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, ending with wins only against Pakistan, West Indies and debutants Bangladesh. Seeing India's campaign unfold they way it did, Chopra was left dispirited after the team failed to even reach the semifinals.</p>

<p>"It is not just players who need to take responsibility, it is everyone including support staff who should take the responsibility. It is not about crucifying one person. You will always have bad days but India were simply not consistent enough.</p>

<p>"As a player and broadcaster, from 1997 to 2022, I have seen every final and every semifinal. I never thought they could win the Cup but expected them to make the semis," said the left-handed batter.</p>

<p>"It is quite an imbalanced situation with the men's team performing consistently across formats but the women are not even able to reach the last four," she said.</p>

<p>Chopra feels India will remain a "near about" side if it doesn't focus on basics like fielding and running between the wickets. She feels that the players are not "unfit" but they are not "fit enough" compared to Australia and England.</p>

<p>"This (running between wickets) has been an issue for a long time. Either things have moved or they have not moved fast enough. If the bar has been raised, progression has to happen.</p>

<p>"It is a good sign that team has started scoring 270 regularly, it has progressed there in the last 15 months with no cricket the year before. If it can progress this much on that front, it can certainly improve in other areas." So what is the way forward for this team?</p>

<p>"Once we realise the present we can decide on the way forward. When you have a shaky present you can't have a bright future. "Cricket overall has improved. 300 has become the average score. Women's game has progressed and we need to improve with time."</p>

<p><strong>'Harmanpreet should captain across formats'</strong></p>

<p>Though Mithali has not announced retirement yet, it is certain that she won't be around when the next World Cup happens. Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur is the front-runner for the job with star opener Smriti Mandhana being the other contender. Smriti is also eight years younger than Harmanpreet who is 33. The change of guard needs to happen now and Chopra says no better than T20 skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to lead India across formats.</p>

<p>"Harman has been an identified leader for a long time. She has been leading the T20 side for a long time. How can you brush aside an identified leader and get an absolute new person for the job? "Who was the best player of the tournament for India? It was Harman. You can't assign captaincy on hope. You did not make Virat Kohli captain on hope, you did not give Rohit captaincy on hope," she had her counter ready.</p>

"I won't say India played poorly. They played a few ordinary matches where they could have performed better. "I would say the kind of preparation and kind of skill the players showed prior to the World cup (against NZ) to getting into the World Cup, it was surprising to see the approach against Pakistan, the way they batted (though they won). "It was surprising decision making (opting to bowl) against New Zealand . Coming to a particular country well in advance, paying six games and if you are still unaware of the conditions, it would be unfair to say that India played poorly, I would say they were not in the contest," Chopra said. India failed to beat any of the SENA teams including England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, ending with wins only against Pakistan, West Indies and debutants Bangladesh. Seeing India's campaign unfold they way it did, Chopra was left dispirited after the team failed to even reach the semifinals. "It is not just players who need to take responsibility, it is everyone including support staff who should take the responsibility. It is not about crucifying one person. You will always have bad days but India were simply not consistent enough. "As a player and broadcaster, from 1997 to 2022, I have seen every final and every semifinal. I never thought they could win the Cup but expected them to make the semis," said the left-handed batter. "It is quite an imbalanced situation with the men's team performing consistently across formats but the women are not even able to reach the last four," she said. Chopra feels India will remain a "near about" side if it doesn't focus on basics like fielding and running between the wickets. She feels that the players are not "unfit" but they are not "fit enough" compared to Australia and England. "This (running between wickets) has been an issue for a long time. Either things have moved or they have not moved fast enough. If the bar has been raised, progression has to happen. "It is a good sign that team has started scoring 270 regularly, it has progressed there in the last 15 months with no cricket the year before. If it can progress this much on that front, it can certainly improve in other areas." So what is the way forward for this team? Also read | PCB chief Raja clarifies 'we'll see who goes to play IPL over PSL' remark "Once we realise the present we can decide on the way forward. When you have a shaky present you can't have a bright future. "Cricket overall has improved. 300 has become the average score. Women's game has progressed and we need to improve with time." 'Harmanpreet should captain across formats' Though Mithali has not announced retirement yet, it is certain that she won't be around when the next World Cup happens. Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur is the front-runner for the job with star opener Smriti Mandhana being the other contender. Smriti is also eight years younger than Harmanpreet who is 33. The change of guard needs to happen now and Chopra says no better than T20 skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to lead India across formats. "Harman has been an identified leader for a long time. She has been leading the T20 side for a long time. How can you brush aside an identified leader and get an absolute new person for the job? "Who was the best player of the tournament for India? It was Harman. You can't assign captaincy on hope. You did not make Virat Kohli captain on hope, you did not give Rohit captaincy on hope," she had her counter ready.

Women's World Cup 2022: Can India still qualify for semi-finals after six-wicket defeat against Australia?

<p>Indian women's team have not enjoyed the best of starts in the ongoing ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2022 as they stand fourth on the points table with four points from four matches so far in the tournament. India have won two and lost two of their first four matches and are now gearing up to face their biggest test of the tournament so far as they get ready to take on table-toppers Australia next.</p>

<p>Australia have been unbeaten so far in the tournament with four wins in their first four matches. The Meg Lanning-led side defeated England in their first game before thrashing Pakistan, New Zealand and West Indies in a row. Australia will be looking to continue their winning run against Mithali Raj-led India, who have been far from consistent with the bat in the tournament so far.</p>

<p>India had posted their biggest total in World Cup history in their clash against West Indies last week with 317 runs on the board riding on centuries from Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur. However, India got bundled out for a paltry 134 runs in their next game against England and suffered a crushing four-wicket defeat.</p>

<p>The Women in Blue will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways against Australia in their fifth game of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2022 on Saturday (March 19) to get their campaign back on track. Ahead of the all-important clash, Indian opener Mandhana was asked about the team's inconsistent batting in the tournament.</p>

<p>The left-hander, who has herself struggled to score runs consistently, said she had no explanation for the struggles. Mandhana feels Indian batters have not clicked as a unit in their last four games and that is something they need to work on.</p>

<p>Mandhana and Harmanpreet then combined to post a mammoth stand of 184 runs for the fourth wicket. While Mandhana slammed 123 runs off 119 balls laced with 13 fours and 2 sixes, Harmanpreet scored 109 runs off 107 balls with the help of ten fours and two sixes.</p>

<p>The duo took the West Indies bowlers to the cleaners throughout their partnership and helped India post a strong total of 317/8 in 50 overs. Harmanpreet also went on to achieve an elusive milestone with her stunning hundred as she surpassed Mithali&nbsp;and Mandhana in an elite list.</p>

Goswami dismissed Katey Martin with a brilliant yorker in the final over of New Zealand's innings to scalp her 39th wicket in the Women's World Cup and equal the record of Australia's Lyn Fullston. Fullston had picked up 39 wickets in Women's World Cups between 1982 to 1988. Goswami has now gone on level terms with the former Australian bowler and is just one wicket shy of breaking her record. The veteran Indian pace is now the joint-highest wicket-taker in Women's ODI World Cups. Most wickets in Women's World Cup: 1 Lyn Fullston Australia 39 2 Jhulan Goswami India 39 3 Carole Hodges England 37 4 Clare Taylor England 36 Also Read: ICC Player of Month: Shreyas Iyer, Mithali Raj nominated for February Regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in the history of women's cricket, Goswami is the all-time leading wicket-taker in women's ODIs with 248 wickets in 197 matches. She has two five-wicket hauls and seven four-wicket hauls to her name in the one-day format. Talking about the game between India and New Zealand on Thursday, Mithali Raj won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. Half-centuries from Amelia Kerr (50) and Amy Satterthwaite (75) helped the Kiwis post a strong total of 260/9 on the bard in fifty overs. Pooja Vastrakar was the pick of the bowlers for India with a four-wicket haul. She finished with excellent figures of 34/4 in her ten overs and nearly bagged a hat-trick when she dismissed Lea Tahuhu and Jess Kerr in the 47th over.

Women's World Cup 2022: Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami equals world record in clash against New Zealand

<p>An inept batting performance by India led to an all-too-familiar surrender against New Zealand as the Mithali Raj-led side went down by 62 runs in its second league stage match of the ICC Women's World Cup here on Thursday.</p>

<p>New Zealand, who have dominated the Indians throughout this summer, didn't let anything change in a familiar script by first scoring a healthy 260 for 9. They then choked the 'Women in Blue' before bowling them out for only 198 in 46.4 overs.</p>

<p>India have now slipped to fifth among eight teams after this defeat while New Zealand, with two wins from three games, are now second behind Australia in the overall standings.</p>

<p>Puja Vastrakar's 4 for 34 in 10 overs and Harmanpreet Kaur's 71 off 62 balls were two isolated performances which hardly made any impact on the larger outcome.</p>

<p>While Vastrakar's four-for could still be credited for stopping New Zealand's total from going north of 280, Harmanpreet's runs might just help her regain confidence for the coming games.</p>

<p>Amelia Kerr (50 and 3/56 in 9 overs), one half of the famous Kerr sisters, first laid the platform with a solid half century and then breached the defences of rival skipper Mithali Raj (31 off 56 balls) with a flighted delivery.</p>

<p>Her fast googly dismissed Richa Ghosh (0) off the successive delivery to make it virtually impossible for India.<br />
Towards the end, she also snapped up Harmanpreet to make it a perfect all-round performance. Seamers Lea Tahuhu (3/17 in 10 overs) and Hayley Jensen (3/30 in 6.4 overs) shared the other scalps.</p>

<p>The pursuit of 261 started on a discordant note with Smriti Mandhana (6 off 21 balls), Yastika Bhatia (28 off 59 balls) and Deepti Sharma (5 off 13 balls) unable find ways to rotate the strike. Mithali's struggles have been well documented and it's not getting any better in her last tournament for India.</p>

<p>Even more baffling was coach Ramesh Powar's strategy of sending three left-handers (out of form Shafali Verma was dropped) with home team skipper Sophie Devine giving the new ball to off-break bowler Frances Mackay (8-1-25-0), who would take it away from left-handers.</p>

<p>The figures don't seem exceptional but much like what Deepak Patel did for men's team in 1992, Mackay bowled as many as 27 dot balls in those first 15 overs to choke the flow of runs.</p>

<p>India haven't found a way to counter New Zealand and in past one month, have lost five of the six WODIs against the White Ferns. The game could be divided into two sets of first 20 overs where the two teams batted.</p>

<p>In case of New Zealand, the first 20 overs yielded 117 runs for the loss of just two wickets while India, in their response, painfully reached 50 for 3 in their share of 20.</p>

<p>The difference was 67 and if one looks at the margin of victory for 'White Ferns', it won't be very difficult to gauge why things went downhill for Mithali's team.</p>

<p>New Zealand's batting has four pillars -- Suzie Bates (5), skipper Devine (35), No. 3 Kerr (50) and No. 4 Amy Satterthwaite (75) and three performed on the day.</p>
