India's Punam Raut walked off the pitch despite being given not-out in the ongoing pink-ball Test match against Australia on Friday. The incident happened during Day 2 off the historic one-off Test match when Australia appealed for a caught behind after Raut edged one to the wicket-keeper.

However, the umpire Phillip Gillespie remained unaffected and did not raise his finger. But Raut decided to walk towards the dressing room immediately after Australia's appeal. Her act once again triggered the 'spirit of cricket' debate on social media.

The Aussie players were left surprised with Raut's decision to walk away despite the decision being in her favour. The incident took place in the 81st over of India's innings when Raut edged one from Sophie Molineux and was caught by Alyssa Healy behind the stumps. BCCI women's handle shared the video of the incident on Twitter as fans applauded Raut for her decision.

Yastika Bhatia and Shafali Verma played knocks of 64 and 56 respectively as India defeated Australia by two wickets in the third and final ODI here at the Harrup Park on Sunday. With this defeat, Australia`s unbeaten 26-match run in ODI cricket came to an end. However, the hosts won the three-match ODI series by 2-1.

Chasing 265, India got off to a steady start as opening batters Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma put on 59 runs for the opening wicket. However, the stand did not last long as Ashleigh Gardner dismissed Mandhana (22) in the 11th over. Yastika Bhatia next joined Shafali in the middle and the duo did not let the momentum drop for the visitors.

Yastika was the aggressor of the two, while Shafali played the second fiddle. Both batters brought up their respective half-centuries as India was poised well in their chase at 153/1 by the end of the 28th over. A 101-run stand for the second wicket came to an end in the 30th over as Sophie Molineux bowled Shafali (56).Richa Ghosh (0) and Bhatia (64) fell shortly after and India was reduced to 180/4, still needing 85 runs to win from 96 balls.

Mithali Raj (16) and Pooja Vastrakar (3) departed in quick succession, and the hopes of India`s victory rested on Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana`s shoulders. Deepti was sent back to the pavilion after playing a knock of 31 runs, but Sneh Rana kept India in the game.

However, the right-hander was dismissed in the penultimate over after playing a knock of 30 runs and India needed 4 runs from the final over to register a win. Jhulan Goswami (8*) showed her experience to finally take the visitors over the line. Earlier, Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney played knocks of 67 and 52 respectively as Australia posted a total of 264/9.

Opting to bat, opening batters Rachael Haynes and Alyssa Healy put on 41 runs for the opening wicket, but this stand was broken in the ninth over as Jhulan Goswami dismissed Haynes (13).

Indian bowlers then managed to get on top of Australia as Meg Lanning (0), Healy (35), and Ellyse Perry (26) departed in a matter of few overs and the hosts were reduced to 87/4 in the 25th over.

Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner then got together at the crease and both helped the hosts in retrieving the innings. Both batters went past their respective 50-run mark and put up a fifth-wicket stand of 98 runs. India was finally able to break the partnership in the 40th over as Sneh Rana got the better of Mooney (52), reducing Australia to 185/5.

Gardner (67) was eventually sent back to the pavilion by Pooja Vastrakar in the 45th over and hopes of Australia reaching a score of more than 250 relied heavily on Tahlia McGrath. In the end, McGrath did not disappoint scoring 47 off just 32 balls, helping the hosts post a score of more than the 260-run mark. For India, Jhulan and Pooja scalped three wickets each.

India women's cricket team defeats West Indies by 53 runs in second ODI

India's veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami Monday rose to the summit of the ICC women's rankings for ODI bowlers following her influential role in the team's series win over England recently.

The 36-year-old Goswami, who last held the top spot in February 2017, finished with eight wickets in the series while helping her team reach second position in the eight-team championship that provides direct qualification berths to hosts New Zealand and four other top teams in the 2021 Women's World Cup.

The latest rankings update also takes into account performances of another ICC Women's Championship series in which defending champions Australia scored a facile 3-0 win over New Zealand to move closer to a direct berth as they are now at the top with 22 points from 12 matches.

India are second with 16 points from 15 matches while New Zealand are on 14 from 15. Reigning World champions England are behind South Africa in fifth position, with 12 points from as many matches.

Goswami, the most successful bowler in ODIs with 218 wickets, has inched closer to the record for the most number of days at the top. She has now been number one for 1873 days, with only retired Australia fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick having spent more time at the top, for 2113 days.

Goswami's new-ball partner Shikha Pandey has gained 12 spots to reach fifth position after also finishing with eight wickets against England. It is for the first time in nine years that two India bowlers are in the top five after Goswami and Rumeli Dhar were in that bracket in 2010.

Stylish left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana, who is the leading run-scorer in the current edition of the ICC Women's Championship with 837 runs, has consolidated her position at the top with a career-best 797 points.

The last time Indians topped both the batting and bowling lists was in March 2012, when Mithali Raj and Goswami led the tables.

In another important movement, Natalie Sciver has advanced 10 slots to reach a career-best fifth place after scoring 130 runs in the series, second only to Mandhana's 153.

Sciver's previous best was seventh position, in July 2017. Her compatriot Danielle Wyatt has gained seven slots to reach a career-best 34th position.

Other players to move up in the rankings update include Australia's Alyssa Healy (up one place to 15th) and Rachael Haynes (up seven places to 21st) and New Zealand's Sophie Devine (up two places to 10th) and Katie Perkins (up six places to 31st) among batters.

Among bowlers, Jess Jonnasen of Australia (up two places to second) and Sophie Ecclestone of England (up four places to 20th) are the notable movers while the all-rounders' list sees Sciver gain two places to fifth and Devine move up three places to seventh.

In an upcoming series starting March 16, England would be looking to overtake India with a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka, who are at the bottom of the table with only one win from 12 matches.

For Sri Lanka, captain and aggressive left-handed batter Chamari Athapaththu will be looking to get back into the top 10 from her present 11th position while former captain Inoka Ranaweera would be similarly hoping to improve her position from the 20th place which she currently occupies.

ICC women's ranking: Jhulan Goswami rises to top of ODI bowlers

India Women cricket team is heavily depended on spinners in the middle overs and even the bowlers have performed at par in the series against New Zealand’s White Ferns, ODI skipper Mithali Raj said on the eve of the three-match T20I series, beginning on February 6.

Spinners, who adapted to challenging conditions in the Kiwiland, helped the touring side clinch the ODI series by 2-1. Ekta Bisht (3, 32) (2, 14) (0, 29), Deepti Sharma (2, 27) (2, 51) (0, 19) and Poonam Yadav (3, 42) (2, 38) (1, 31) worked in tandem to run through the Kiwi batting in the three matches.

"It is good to see spinners bowling very well in the series because it is something lot of people have asked me earlier — how the spinners are going to be effective on this soil, in these conditions."

India definitely has heavily depended on spinners in the middle overs and they have not disappointed in the series because when it came to the first two games, they controlled the middle overs and got those wickets for us," Mithali told ANI.

With the third game against White Ferns on February 1, Mithali became the first-ever woman cricketer to play 200 one-day internationals.

The 36-year-old, who has seen the hard difficult days when women's cricket was not given the due, considers herself fortunate and grateful to have come so far, saying, "I have never seen this coming when I first took up the bat but yes it has always been an honour and pride to represent the country for so many years and seeing women's cricket go through the transition."

"I have had made my debut under the WCI, now we are under the BCCI. Today where women cricketers are, I think young children can look up to them as role models. The standard in women’s game has improved vastly coming from say 150 to 200 to 300 total, it will only get better and better," she said.

"I am thankful to all those people who have had played an important part in shaping my career. I will continue to invest in those reasons or the factors that have kept me going all these years whether it is adapting to different conditions or situations and of course the responsibility of the team. I have seen highs and lows, which I believe is part of a long career," Mithali said.

India managed only one win when they last visited New Zealand in 2006, the first time the teams had ever played a bilateral ODI series in the Kiwiland. Now 13 years later, the only remaining players who can link to the tour of 2006 are India's two top cricketers Mithali and Jhulan Goswami.

Coming with a relatively new team and new setup, Mithali said, "Coming after 11 or 12 years a lot has changed over the years in terms of players, coming under the BCCI, under the ICC.

The number of matches which has increased has only helped players who kind of have a form can continue it and players who are in search of a form will always have more matches that they can always get back to."

The ODI skipper wanted to clean sweep the series by 3-0 as that would have put India Women at number two in the rankings. However, as the team still has two more series, Mithali is hopeful to gather more points.

India are slated to play three ODIs, part of ICC Women's Championship, and three T20Is against England.

The series will be hosted at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 22, 25 and 28. The T20I series will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on March 4, 7 and 9.

"We are playing England at home, conditions will be favouring us. England are a good side, one of the top teams and they will give us a good fight. The Indian team is in a good form, momentum that we would love to carry in our home series."

India Women and Men will begin their T20I double-header series against New Zealand's White Ferns and Black Caps on February 6 at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

The number of matches which has increased has only helped players who kind of have a form can continue it and players who are in search of a form will always have more matches that they can always get back to." The ODI skipper wanted to clean sweep the series by 3-0 as that would have put India Women at number two in the rankings. The Indian team is in a good form, momentum that we would love to carry in our home series." India Women and Men will begin their T20I double-header series against New Zealand's White Ferns and Black Caps on February 6 at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

ICC Women's World T20: Mithali Raj guides India to seven-wicket win over Pakistan

One newspaper headlined the women's cricket World Cup title match thus, 'Nine runs short of history'. Perhaps the headline missed the irony trapped in its own supposition - that these women were trying to write 'his-story'. What it elided was something much much bigger – which is, 'her-story'.

Yes, it was cricket that did it for the women in blue. After all, cricket is the reigning catalyst of this nation's imagination. Cricketing fervour makes a visceral connection with the country's deepest cultural resources, bringing out in the process its best, and its worst. But while what happened yesterday at Lord’s was cricket, it was also way more than cricket.

Moments of exuberance stimulate the imagination. Accolades are being heaped on the Mitali Raj-led Indian women’s cricket team. The Prime Minister tweeted in his congratulations. Diehard fans have exclaimed, “Ufff, if only!” To me, however, the most fetching comment was the one aired on TV much before the final match was played. It came from a Haryana farmer, when asked what he thought about the women’s cricket team, “I’ll put my daughters through college or even support them if they wish to play cricket. My sons can take to the fields. They are good for that (only)!”

So here are two critical questions: “Is this a moment of disruption for the choices women can make about themselves and their lives?” And, “Is this also a moment that recasts the way women are perceived by society (read patriarchy)?”

Small disruptions have stirred the imagination in the past. In ‘Chak de India’, a woman hockey player has a hot shot national-level cricketer as a boyfriend, who her friends in the team swoon over. There is this moment where he disparages her game, patronising women’s hockey as the ‘not real’ thing. The woman player drops him then and there, just like that. ‘Dangal’ has this moment where a young bride tells her friend Geeta (the lead protagonist of the movie, who’s not at that point happy about being pushed into wrestling by her father) that she got it wrong about missing all this wedding finery, that at least her father has given her a purpose beyond the limited and narrow choices available to women. Captain Mitali Raj has added to this string of disruptions. When asked who her favourite male cricketer was, pat came her reply: “Do you ask male cricketers about their favourite female cricketer?” Another time in an interview she was asked about her favourite ‘assessory’. Guess what she said? “Kindle!”

These moments of disruption do not add up to a consensus on women’s emancipation; they only show the way. Which is why I am almost glad we lost the final by nine runs. To have almost made it but not quite is a more apposite outcome. Otherwise, by now, we’d have gone wild, waiting at the airport with garlands and cut-outs, naming these cricketers after our goddesses. We are almost there but not quite.

To deify women is not same as respecting them. True, we deify our male cricketers. But then most Indian men are deified in their homes too. That’s exactly what Madhuri Dixit tries to debunk when she says to her screen husband while resisting his domineering belief system in the path breaking Prakash Jha movie, ‘Mrityudana’ (Death Sentence), “Pati hai, pati bane rahiye. Parmeshwar banne ki koshis mat kijiye.” (You are my husband, stay that way. Don’t try and play God).

For society to change its attitude towards women and to view them as free subjects, we need to step back from the exuberance of the moment and reassess our attitude towards women. We need to find the courage to see a Harmanpreet in our daughters, and not merely as a cutout. We need to recognise that while the Jadejas of the world grew up in rough neighbourhoods just like perhaps the Harmanpreets, there is a difference. When Jadeja was playing gully cricket, his parents believed it was the things boys do. The Harmanpreets, on the other hand, were told to play ‘stapu’ (hopscotch), not allowed to wield the cricket bat. The Jadejas of the world would have kept the Harmanpreets at bay. No fault of the Jadejas, but that is the way patriarchy works. It hardwires the edifice of injustice into the minds of people, young and old, men and women, pracharak and pastor.

The Mirzas, Nehwals and Sidhus have carved out careers that reflect their individual brilliance. But to see women succeed in a team game is something else. To see the cricket team strive before the world stage and play with such pluck and skill is to recognise their individual struggles of courage. As a society, we need to engage with these stories and read them into the script we evolve for our girls and our women. This narrative won’t be forged into shape with one World Cup. It has to be coded into our DNA. And it’s about much more than a game. It is about identity. Women must be recognised for what they do and not who they are. This requires a paradigm shift in our thinking as a society.

It’s good therefore that we lost the final. The next four years will be about doing better in 2021 World Cup. The Jhulans and Rajs of the world had to fight hard to be recognised as players (Diana Edulgee anybody?), but the younger lot have had their moment in the sun. I would not be surprised with an IPL (W) taking shape. The game of cricket does strange things to India. Maybe it will get our girls out of their homes and onto the gully. And from the gully to the ground. And from the ground to their own. We may have lost the final. But what finally emerges from this World Cup experience might transform into a greater victory.
Is it good that India's women cricket team lost the final?

India and Pakistan take each other on today at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup being played in England.

India has so far won their two opening games.

They beat England in the opening game by 35 runs and then beat the West Indies by seven wickets.

Pakistan on the other hand lost both their opening games -- to South Africa and England.

So the pressure will be on Pakistan; they need to win.

Furthermore, the two countries have so far played each other nine times at the World Cup -- with India winning every single time. Which is not going to help ease the pressure.

Pakistan understands that.

"Playing against India there is always pressure. It is a big game but I am very hopeful of doing much better against India. We beat India in India in the last T20. I believe in my spinners that they will bounce back and take wickets, and we will win the match. Ayesha batted well and gained confidence, which is important before the game against India," said Pakistan all-rounder Asmavia.

"We are looking forward to the next game, whole Pakistan. In Pakistan they say that you have to win against India, it is very important. We took some positives (from the game against England). Our fast bowling did well, Ayesha played well. But there are many areas to improve, especially fielding, which is letting us down. If we field well, we can beat any team," she added.

The Indian skipper Mithali Raj responded to that with: "We need to work on our catching, fielding is very crucial and it can win us matches. I'm very pleased with the way the girls responded with crucial run-outs against the West Indies even though there were a couple of lapses in the field (drops). We still have a couple of games more before we can look to the semi-finals and looking at how Sri Lanka has played and how Pakistan has played, every match is going to be crucial for us."

Which is not going to help ease the pressure. The Indian women's cricket team. (Instagram) × The Pakistan women's cricket team. (Instagram) × Pakistan understands that.
