The latest Chinese 'scientific' ship to venture into the expansive Indian Ocean is the Shi Yan 6. The ship is equipped to conduct various experiments in oceanography, marine geology, and marine ecology.

This three-month voyage, driven by multidisciplinary observations, seeks to gather extensive fundamental data. It aims to uncover how dynamic processes impact biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems, and sedimentary processes in the region, elucidate the geographical patterns of biodiversity, understand the response of biological communities to physical processes, and gain insights into paleoclimate changes.

"With the People’s Liberation Army Navy expanding its presence in the Indian Ocean, Chinese research vessels frequently make trips to the region, primarily in the eastern Indian Ocean. Larsen & Toubro and Navantia join hands to bid for Indian Navy's top submarine programme

The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force (IAF) will finally see the emergence of its full-force theatre commands and it could happen within the coming months. India’s fighting regime is set to change forever with an integrated war machine and here is India's Game Plan for future wars.

What is a theatre command?

A theatre command is a structure designed to control all military assets in a theatre of war. This war-fighting machinery combines forces of all defence services, Army, Navy and Air Force.

Blueprint for India’s theatre commands

Currently, India has only two tri-service commands, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the Strategic Forces Command to handle India’s nuclear assets and 17 individual service commands. Initial plans of the Indian armed forces suggest that these individual commands will be consolidated into five theatre commands: the Northern Land Theatre, Western Land Theatre, Eastern Land Theatre, Maritime Theatre Command and a Logistics Command.

Under the new structure, all theatre commanders will report directly to Chief of Defence Staff, aligning India with the practices of nations like the United States and China.

Military asset allocation

Under the theatre commands, the military assets will be allocated as per need and operations. For example, the new MQ-9 reaper drones that India is procuring.

These will not be owned by any single theatre command or a single defence service. Instead, these assets will be a theatre resource and will shift from one to another based on the contingency.

Strategic locations

India will begin with three integrated theatre commands, headed by senior three-star generals of the ranks of Lt. Generals, Air Marshals and Vice Admirals or higher. These will be located in the western front with Pakistan, a maritime command in peninsular India and one command to handle the northern borders with China, where currently India has four Army and three IAF commands.

While China continues to rapidly modernise its war-fighting capabilities, India’s theatre command structure is coming into place. This is perhaps the last remaining lacuna that the Indian armed forces are now filling for a seamless coordinated approach to tackle China’s threat. With the tri-service commands in place, India will pose a three-fold threat to all its adversarial neighbours and enemies.

Flypasts by the Indian Navy, presence of India's Chief of Naval Staff and attendance from Government of India ministers. This is just a glimpse of the grand welcome that awaits Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini and her crew of naval officers, as she sails towards the shores of Goa around 2:20 pm local time on Tuesday (May 23). At that time, INSV Tarini would have completed a grand voyage of 31,000 kilometres. In a 188-day trans-oceanic and inter-continental voyage, the vessel sailed from Goa, on India's southwestern coast, to Cape Town, South Africa and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and then set sail for the return to Goa.

Over the last decade-and-a-half, the Indian Navy has taken earnest efforts in promoting ocean sailing in the country. Indian Navy's Captain Dilip Donde was the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2009-2010. Subsequently, Commander Abhilash Tomy (retired) was the first Asian skipper to participate in two circumnavigations. Recently, during Golden Globe Race 2022, an east-bound non-stop circumnavigation race starting and finishing in Les Sables d’ Olonne, France, Cdr Abhilash Tomy (retd) accomplished the rare feat of getting a podium finish by completing the gruelling course in second position, all while using primitive sailing tools and no modern technology. On board INSV Tarini, six women officers of the Indian Navy had successfully completed a circumnavigation expedition 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' in the year 2018. While the legacy of such expeditions stands tall in the country, Tarini's latest mission is a special one.

The Indian Navy envisions sending a woman on a solo circumnavigation attempt and this latest expedition is a stepping stone towards that goal. Lieutenant Commanders Dilna (hailing from Kerala) and Roopa (hailing from Pondicherry) have sailed 188 days on Tarini, guided and mentored in two phases (onward phase from Goa to Rio De Janeiro and return from Rio to Goa), by two batches of naval Officers with vast sailing experience. Through rough seas and adverse conditions, the women officers are being put through the process of gaining more confidence and experience towards more daring feats on the high seas.

INSV Tarini to sail into Goa today after 31k kms of sailing

The ocean sailing yacht INSV Tarini, which has been travelling under difficult circumstances for the past seven months and covering 17,000 nautical miles, is scheduled to arrive back at its home port in Goa on Tuesday.

Indian Navy sailing vessel Tarini to complete historic voyage

Indian Navy deployed its Aerial Maritime Reconnaissance assets in the wee hours of Tuesday (May 16) in the southern Indian Ocean after a Chinese fishing vesse sank. Chinese fishing vessel Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028 with 39 crew on board had sunk 900 nautical miles (approx 1,666 kms) south of India's Kanyakumari (southern tip of mainland India).

So far, the plight of the 39-member crew that comprises 17 persons from China, 17 persons from Indonesia and five from the Philippines, remains unknown. According to the Indian Navy, its P8I multi-role maritime surveillance aircraft "have carried out multiple & extensive searches despite adverse weather & located multiple objects possibly belonging to the sunken vessel". On the request of Chinese Navy (People's Liberation Army Navy) warships approaching the area, the Indian Navy aircraft also dropped search and rescue equipment (such as life rafts etc).

"In a display of India’s obligations as a credible & responsible partner for ensuring safety at sea, the Indian Navy units also coordinated Search and rescue efforts with other units in the area & guided PLA (N) warships transiting to the scene of incident" the Indian Navy said in a statement. It was added that the Indian Navy continues to remain deployed to provide all possible assistance to the search and rescue efforts.

Indian Navy deploys aerial assets as Chinese fishing vessel sinks in Indian Ocean

A Chinese deep-sea fishing vessel capsized in the central Indian Ocean. China sought help from multiple countries to save its crew. India didn't hesitate to step forward. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Indian Navy responds to Chinese SOS call

In a major breakthrough in the multi-nation search and rescue operation, the Indian Navy has located the sunken Chinese fishing vessel, Lu Peng Yuan Yu 28, which is said to have been carrying 39 crew members when it sunk in the early hours of Tuesday in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Rakhine region has a large population of Rohingya Muslims, a persecuted minority several successive Myanmar governments have refused to recognise.

Political chaos in the country

Myanmar has been gripped by political and economic chaos since the military seized power in a coup in 2021. Since then, fighting has raged across the country between the military and pro-democracy or allied ethnic armed groups.

Residents of Rakhine State said at least 100 people had been killed and many more were missing and feared dead after the cyclone, adding that aid is yet to arrive. Bangladesh faced its worst power cuts in over seven months.

Reuters said it was not able to independently verify the death toll. It quoted news portal Myanmar Now which reported that hundreds were dead while aid groups said there were "significant number of deaths".

Myanmar's state media said three people were killed.

The storm was one of the worst since Cyclone Nargis swept across parts of southern Myanmar killing nearly 140,000 people in 2008.

Millions affected by storm

Reuters quoted a United Nations official who said that 5.4 million people were expected to have been in the storm's path.

"It's really a nightmare scenario for the cyclone to hit areas with such deep pre-existing needs," said Ramanathan Balakrishnan at the UN's Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Shelter, water, sanitation, and relief items were early priorities, he said.

Storm damage to communications and road infrastructure and ongoing restrictions by Myanmar's military government was making it difficult to get information from and deliver aid to the affected area, non-governmental organisations said.

"It's difficult to obtain accurate or up to date information, which also makes responding to the crisis adequately even more difficult," said Manny Maung of Human Rights Watch.

When it hit, the cyclone caused winds of up to 210 kmph (130 mph). These ripped roofs off homes and caused storm surge that caused flooding in Sittwe, capital of the state. Watch | United Nations: Cyclone Mocha caused extensive damage in Myanmar × Rakhine region has a large population of Rohingya Muslims, a persecuted minority several successive Myanmar governments have refused to recognise. Political chaos in the country Myanmar has been gripped by political and economic chaos since the military seized power in a coup in 2021. Millions affected by storm Reuters quoted a United Nations official who said that 5.4 million people were expected to have been in the storm's path.
