Virender Sehwag shares what Team India need to learn from England, New Zealand post T20 WC debacle

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has hit back at critics who had slammed the Indian players for prioritising playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the national team. Which fool would value playing in IPL over India: Ravi Shastri hits back at critics after T20 WC debacle

Team India is now entering a new era under Rohit Sharma post their dismal campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. As Virat Kohli had already announced that he will step aside as the T20I captain post the showpiece event, Rohit has officially taken over in the shortest format and will look to take the Men in Blue to greater heights.

In addition, Rahul Dravid has taken over as India's head coach after the Ravi Shastri-era came to an end with the T20 WC campaign. Thus, there is a lot happening in Indian cricket as all eyes are now on the future.

As per a report in the Times of India, the national selectors are divided over the vice-captaincy position in the Test line-up. After Rohit was given the responsibility to lead in T20Is, and he is already the vice-captain in ODIs, some of the selectors want him to become Kohli's deputy altogether; i.e. even in Tests. On the other hand, some remain in favour of Ajinkya Rahane, who led India to a historic 2-1 series win versus Australia in their own backyard in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

While Rahane has been a regular in whites, Rohit's stocks have also risen in the purest format of the game. The thing which is in favour of Rohit is that Rahane's form continues to remain a matter of concern. His Melbourne Test hundred, in late 2020, has been his only face-saving knock in recent times. Thus, it has now reached a point where his vice-captaincy post is being discussed among selectors and head coach Dravid.

Rohit Sharma or Ajinkya Rahane? Selectors divided over vice-captaincy post in Indian Test side: Report

Team India bowed out of the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE, in the Super 12 round after failing to win their first two encounters. 'Your contribution will...' - Virat Kohli pens down heartfelt post for Team India's outgoing coaching staff

Virat Kohli has signed off as India's Twenty20 captain after an unsuccessful ICC T20 World Cup 2021 campaign as India exited the tournament after failing to make it to the semi-finals. Kohli had said that it is time to manage the workload.

"It's been an honour, but things have to be kept in the right perspective. This was the right time for me to manage my workload. It's been six-seven years of intense cricket every time we take the field and it takes a lot out of you," Kohli said.

Even before the Covid-delayed tournament started in Dubai and Oman, Kohli had announced that he will step down as 20-overs captain. The news came as a shock to some, but some welcomed the decision as it is an opportunity for a new style of leadership - a breath of fresh air.

Despite being the hot favourites, India didn't get the start they needed as the Men In Blue lost their first two crucial matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. However, they won the last three games of the Super 12 stage against Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia but it wasn't enough for a semi-final berth from Group 2.

Virat has led the team to great heights in Test and white-ball cricket but critics have always pointed at his failure to land a World Cup triumph in either T20 or ODI cricket. But skipper or not, Kohli will always be the team's batting mainstay till the time he is playing for India.

Also, he stepped down from T20 format only as Kohli, who took over the T20 captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017 will continue to captain India in Test and ODI cricket. Be it any format, his stint as a captain is an example, which is defined by his attitude as a leader.

There's no denying the fact that Virat is an outstanding batter, his growth as a cricketer has been a motivation to millions. Physically, he wasn't that fit as he is right now but hard work and a disciplined regime have made him a top-class athlete over the course of time.

When we see him on TV screens playing mesmerising cover-shots effortlessly, that's just the abstract...there's a mechanism behind it. His passion for the game is not hidden. He has been striving forward to learn and grow to become one of the greatest players in his time.

Leading the team by example is something that makes him a dynamic leader. He motivates the teammates and never shies away to express himself on the field. He intimidates the opponent, he can't be bullied by bowlers, dare to sledge him on the field. Virat will give it back and be the first person to come in defence of his mates in case of an on-field scuffle.

Virat's belligerent on-field attitude has been a catalyst in making India one of the most feared in recent times. The players know that the captain will have their backs. Remember how he got himself involved in the on-field banter between Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and England's James Anderson during recent India vs England Test series in the UK.

Then again, he also came forward to support former Australian skipper Steve Smith during India vs Australia match in World Cup 2019. He had asked a group of fans to applaud Smith instead of mocking him over the infamous ball-tampering scandal.

From dancing to banters to laughing and funny gestures, Virat's antics make him different. Although, these things do not matter as players are different and behave differently. But the talent and spirit of cricket in Virat is just next level.

Mentioning again, that Virat will continue to lead the Indian team in ODI and Test, however, there are reports that he might leave white-ball captaincy altogether. But he, himself said that his intensity on the field will remain the same. "That's never going to change. If I can't do that I will not play anymore. Even when I wasn't captain before I was always keen to see where the game is going. I'm not going to stand around and do nothing," Kohli said.

He is a prolific batter, outstanding teammate and a passionate ambassador of cricket. How to sum up his captaincy? Well, he is a combination of sugar and spice and everything nice.

And in Virat's case, the 'Chemical X' is his passion for cricket and his hard work, which have been added by himself.

Virat Kohli has signed off as India's Twenty20 captain after an unsuccessful ICC T20 World Cup 2021 campaign as India exited the tournament after failing to make it to the semi-finals.

Rahul Dravid is set to take over officially as Team India's full-time coach from the New Zealand home series, starting from November 17. Dravid will succeed Ravi Shastri, who played the role of India's head coach from mid-2017 to late 2021.

While India did very well under Shastri, across formats, his tenure ended without India winning an ICC title. After the T20 World Cup 2021 debacle, a lot has been said and written with regard to Team India's hectic cricketing schedule in a calendar year and the fatigue issue surrounding the players. Hence, the newly-appointed coach Dravid has taken up the fatigue issue with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), as per a report in the Indian Express, and is also set to play a key role in the subject of players' rotation, depending upon their workload, in coordination with BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

So far, the matter of players' rotation, rest, and workload management has been in the hands of the selectors. However, it seems the picture is set to change after a number of players complained of bio-bubble fatigue. Hence, the new head coach Dravid is set to spearhead the whole process of the players being given adequate rest before the national selectors announce the squad for any future series or big-ticket tournaments.

Ravi Shastri's tenure as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team came to an end on Monday (November 08) with the team's emphatic nine-wicket win over Namibia in their final Super 12 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. Shastri's contract with the Indian team was set to expire post the T20 World Cup this year.

He was appointed as the full-time head coach of Team India in 2017, replacing Anil Kumble at the helm after India's defeat against Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy 2017.
India were one of the best teams in the world under Shastri's tenure as they dominated the ICC Test rankings and were the no.1 team for several months. India won back-to-back Test series in Australia and were 2-1 ahead in the Test series in England earlier this year.

India also reached the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) but missed out on the trophy after losing against New Zealand by 8 wickets in the summit clash. That's the problem with Team India: Nasser Hussain decodes reason behind Kohli & Co.'s T20 WC debacle

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked the best man to lead India in T20Is after Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the side in the shortest format. Kohli cited workload issues as he explained his decision to quit T20I captaincy after leading India for one last time in their final Super 12 game against Namibia in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday.

India had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 as they failed to reach the semis after suffering back-to-back defeats in their first two games. India ended their campaign with three wins and two defeats in five matches in what was Kohli's last tournament as captain in T20Is. He will continue leading the Indian team in ODIs and Tests.

After Kohli's departure as captain, Gavaskar has named the ideal replacement for him as India's next T20I captain. The former India captain believes India should not look at a long-term captaincy change at present and appoint Rohit Sharma as the skipper in T20Is considering the T20 World Cup 2022 is less than a year away.

"Long term is in case the next World Cup is maybe 2 years away or 3 years away. Next World Cup is just 10-12 months away. You don't have to really look long term now," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

"Right now, you have to look for the best man who can take India to an ICC trophy. And that is Rohit Sharma with his record for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he is an obvious choice. I think he should be given the captaincy and maybe after next year's World Cup in Australia, maybe have a look at another T20 captain. But right, now it's only Rohit Sharma," he added.

'He can take India to an ICC trophy': Sunil Gavaskar names best man to replace Virat Kohli as T20I captain

The T20 World Cup 2021 edition's Super 12 round came to an end on Monday evening (November 8). Team India defeated Namibia in style, by nine wickets, to finish their dismal campaign on a high as the action will now shift towards the semi-finals, where England will take on New Zealand in the first semi-final whereas Australia will lock horns with Pakistan in the second semi-final.

Ahead of the semi-finals round, from November 10-11, India's veteran wicketkeeper-batsman-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik made heads turn by sharing his team of the tournament. In the list, DK didn't include some big names such as India's Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, David Warner, Mohammad Rizwan, Aiden Markram, David Wiese, Anrich Nortje, etc.

Karthik's team of the tournament had Pakistan's Babar Azam as captain. While he has led the team exceptionally well as the Men in Green remain the only unbeaten side heading into the semi-finals, some would be surprised that England's Eoin Morgan didn't feature as captain in the XI. To this, Karthik told on Cricbuzz, "Would have ideally liked Morgan as he has been the best captain for me, but has not done enough as a batter. So, I went for Azam."

So, I went for Azam." ALSO READ | GOOSEBUMPS!
India's Test and ODI captain Virat Kohli remains a superstar in world cricket. The 33-year-old made a big name for himself in world cricket since early 2012 but was one of the star attractions even before his heydays. While he settled scores with the crowd, it wasn't over for the right-hander as he was called upon by the match referee the following day.

From Pool B, Pakistan and New Zealand have qualified for the semi-finals whereas England and Australia have made it to the semi-finals from Pool A. The first semi-final will see England and New Zealand lock horns with each other (on November 10) whereas Australia-Pakistan will play the second semi-final (on November 11).

'Air of arrogance around the scheduling' - Simon Doull reflects on Team India's dismal T20 WC campaign

Virat Kohli-led India ended their dismal T20 World Cup 2021 campaign after bowing out of the showpiece event in the Super 12 round. As soon as New Zealand beat Afghanistan and confirmed their semi-finals slot, on Sunday (November 7), India stood eliminated (with Pakistan being the first side to have already confirmed their last four slot from Pool B). Despite a nine-wicket win over Namibia in their last group stage encounter, on Monday evening (November 8) at Dubai, India ended with 6 points and bowed out of the seventh edition of the mega event.

Following India's exit, Kohli's tenure as the T20I captain also came to an end. He had already announced that the T20 WC will be his last assignment as India's skipper in the shortest format. On the other hand, Ravi Shastri's tenure as the head coach also came to an end. For the unversed, the former all-rounder didn't extend his contract post the T20 WC.

After India's win over Namibia, Shastri gave an inspiring speech to the Indian team players in the dressing room and reflected on the team's journey under his coaching. He told, “You guys as a team have over exceeded my expectations with the way you have played. Over the last few years, to go across the globe, across all formats, and beat everyone, makes you one of the great teams that have played the game. This will go down as one of the great teams that have played the game over the last 5-6 years across all formats because there are results to be seen,” Shastri was quoted as saying.

“Yes, we did not have a great tournament. We could have won one or two ICC tournaments, didn’t happen. But that’s sport. You will get another chance. You will be wiser and more experienced when the next opportunity comes. But, for me, the most important thing in life is not what you accomplish, it’s what you overcome that override everything else,” he added. Here's the video of his speech, shared on Team India's official Instagram handle:

GOOSEBUMPS! Shastri shares heartfelt speech as outgoing coach post India's T20 WC campaign- WATCH

Virat Kohli said the feeling was of 'relief' after leading India for one final time in T20Is on Monday (November 08). Team India signed off with a 9-wicket win against Namibia in the final Super 12 clash of the T20 World Cup 2021 in what was Kohli's last game as the captain of the T20I side. The batting maestro had already confirmed he will be stepping down as the captain of the Indian team in the shortest format at the end of the T20 World Cup 2021.

India were knocked out of the T0 World Cup 2021 on Sunday after Afghanistan's 8-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand. The Men in Blue needed a favour from Afghanistan to remain alive in the competition but the Mohammad Nabi-led side's defat sealed their fate in the tournament as India failed to make it to the top four and bowed out from the group stages.

India suffered back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand in their first two games in the tournament as they semi-final hopes were left shattered. The Men in Blue staged a comeback with three wins in their next three matches but six points were not enough to help India finish second in Group 2 to reach the semis as Kohli's stint as T20I captain ends without a major ICC trophy.

Nonetheless, Kohli said it was the right time for him to step down as the captain in T20Is while citing workload. The run machine also pointed out how the intense cricket that he has played in the last 6-7 years while leading the Indian team has taken away a lot from him. Kohli was appointed as India's Test captain in 2014 and took over as captain across all formats from MS Dhoni in 2017.

"Relief firstly (emotions). As I said it's been an honour, but things have to be kept in the right perspective," Kohli said after leading India to a comprehensive win in his final game as T20I captain.

"This was the right time for me to manage my workload. It's been six-seven years of intense cricket every time we take the field and it takes a lot out of you. It's been great fun, great bunch of guys and we've really performed well as a team," said the 33-year-old explaining his decision to quit T20I captaincy.

Kohli led India in a total of 50 T20I matches as captain, wining 30 while losing 16 games. 2 matches ended without a result while two ended in a tie. He led India to some memorable series wins against the likes of England, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia among others.

The T20 World Cup 2021 was Kohli's first and last major ICC T20 event as captain of the side where he failed to inspire his side to the semis and will have to settle without a trophy. Along with Kohli as T20I skipper, the nine-wicket win against Namibia also was Ravi Shastri's final game as the head coach of the Indian team.

Kohli thanked Shastri and his support staff - bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach - R Sridhar, who are all set to depart after India's campaign at the T20 World Cup 2021 ended on Monday. Rahul Dravid will take over as Inda's new head coach from the upcoming New Zealand series at home.

"Big thank you to all those guys (Ravi Shastri & Co.), they've done a tremendous job all these years keeping the group together. Great environment with them around, they were an extended part of our bigger family. They've contributed immensely to Indian cricket as well. A big thank you to all of them from all of us," said Kohli.

"This was the right time for me to manage my workload. It's been six-seven years of intense cricket every time we take the field and it takes a lot out of you. It's been great fun, great bunch of guys and we've really performed well as a team," said the 33-year-old explaining his decision to quit T20I captaincy.

Team India, on Sunday (November 8), bowed out of the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE.
As Cricket Pakistan's tweet tried to troll the Indian fans, Jaffer had the last laugh by reminding them of India's superior head-to-head record versus Babar Azam-led Pakistan in ICC events (12-1). As soon as the news broke out that India are virtually out of the race from the semi-finals, Cricket Pakistan's official Twitter handle tried to troll the Indian cricket fans. What can we say when players prioritise playing IPL over country: Kapil Dev as India bow out of T20 WC

Indian skipper Virat Kohli's leadership is once again under the scanner after his team's poor show in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. India have bowed out of the showpiece event after suffering two consecutive defeats in their first four matches and will be heading home after playing their final Super 12 game against Namibia on Monday (November 08).

Kohli had already announced that he will be stepping down as the captain of the Indian T20I side post the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. However, many have now raised questions over his captaincy credentials in ODIs. Reports have stated that BCCI might look to replace him in the fifty-over format as well.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag was recently asked by a fan if Kohli should also leave ODI and Test captaincy of the Indian team. Sehwag backed the current Indian skipper to continue leading in the other two formats while carrying on as a pure batter in the shortest format.

"This is Virat's decision but I don't think he should leave the other two formats' captaincy. If he wants to play just as a player, it is his decision. I feel India are playing well under his captaincy. His records as a captain are superb. It's his personal decision whether he wants to continue as the ODI and Test captain or not. According to me, he should lead India because he is a good player, a good captain who leads from the front," Sehwag said while responding to the fan's query in a video posted on Facebook.
