There was a lot of noise on social media over the non-inclusion of wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 after the team was announced by the BCCI on Monday. Samson was overlooked as India picked Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as the two wicket-keeper batters in the 15-man squad for the tournament in Australia next month.

Samson, who last featured for India on their tour of Zimbabwe last month, was backed by many fans on Twitter for his brilliant stroke-playing ability and swashbuckling style. However, he was reportedly never in contention to make the cut in India's squad for the T20 World Cup this year.

As per PTI, Samson was not in contention and his name was not even discussed during the meeting between the selectors on Monday ahead of the announcement of the squad. Pant was an obvious choice considering he is the only left-hander that can play in the top five in the absence of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

"Sanju in any case will be playing the ODIs against South Africa as selectors will maintain the continuity from the Zimbabwe tour. Also there was never any discussions on dropping Pant. He is the only left-hander we have at the top and he can win a match on his day," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

While Samson's talent and skills have never been doubted, he has struggled for consistency ever since first bursting onto the scene with his exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL) a few years back. He has now matured with age and has significantly improved his game but is yet to cement his spot in the Indian team in white-ball cricket.

Apart from the debate over the selection of players, India's disappointing performance in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 was also discussed during the meeting on Monday. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah were also present and it was pointed out that India's performance in the middle order was concerning.

"Yes, the Asia Cup performance was discussed. But obviously, more than problems, the focus is on solutions and what are the things that needs to be improved during the T20 World Cup," a BCCI official told PTI.

"There is an obvious issue with batting during the middle overs, especially between 7th to 15th where we haven't done well in the Asia Cup. Obviously, the team's think-tank is aware and we have some world-class players, who can obviously change their game as per team's needs," he added.

Rohit Sharma is set to lead India in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia, from October-November. He will be desperate to get a hand on the trophy and join MS Dhoni in becoming only the second Indian captain to clinch the mega title. Before that, Rohit received huge words of praise from former Pakistan opener Salman Butt, who believes that Hitman is the only player who comes close to matching AB de Villiers' heroics with the bat. Nonetheless, when it comes to comparing him with Pakistani openers Babar Azam and Md Rizwan, Butt refrained from doing so.

Butt believes Rohit is a far more skilled player than Rizwan and Babar -- who are currently the top-two ranked T20I batters, respectively -- but would've been more destructive had his fitness levels been even half as good as Virat Kohli's. “Unka (Rohit) comparison nahi banta (with Babar and Rizwan). With his set of skills, Rohit ki fitness Kohli se aadhi bhi ho, toh usse zyada destructive player nahi hai. Fir uska aur sirf AB de Villiers ka match reh jaata hai, beechme koi player nahi aata. Rohit is easily one of the most successful openers of all time. His career's biggest turnaround came when he was promoted as an opener in early 2013. Since then, there has been no looking back for the Indian captain, who has over 16,133 runs across formats (9,376 in ODIs and 3,620 in T20Is). Nonetheless, it is his fitness levels which many believe are still not up to the mark as the veteran batter has missed plenty of away Test series in recent times. In the current Indian team, he is given breaks at regular intervals to manage his workload and also keep him away from injuries.

Kohli, on the other hand, has been the torch-bearer in bringing a huge change in Indian cricket when it comes to fitness standards. He has hardly missed international assignments due to injury concerns and has a huge fan base for inculcating the significance of fitness in the Team India camp, apart from his plethora of runs across formats.

Rohit would've been most destructive player if his fitness levels were half as good as Virat's: Ex-Pak skipper

Hardik Pandya will be India's first-choice all-rounder in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 and is expected to play a key role for the team in the tournament. Pandya has been in brilliant form ever since making his comeback to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 earlier this year.

Pandya played an instrumental role in leading Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title in their debut season before continuing his purple patch with the Indian team. He has since been unstoppable and will be hoping to extend his stellar run at the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

Explaining Pandya's importance in the Indian team, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar backed him to play a similar role as former all-rounder Ravi Shastri did for India in 1985. Shastri was the Man of the Series under Gavaskar's captaincy in the 1985 World Series where he notched up 182 runs in five matches, including three fifties and also picked up eight wickets.

Riding on Shastri's all-round heroics, India went on to win the tournament after defeating Pakistan in the final. Gavaskar believes Pandya can pull off something similar for India at the T20 World Cup this year and help India win the trophy.

"Yes, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with both bat and ball in the entire tournament. Some good catches as well. Hardik Pandya is capable of doing that," Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar also pointed out how Pandya can win matches for India not just with his batting and bowling, but also with his fielding. The star all-rounder is one of the best fielders in the side and has is capable of pulling off sensational catches and run-outs.

"Don't forget, at mid-off, he affects some electrifying run-outs as well. Direct hits at the bowler's end, catching the batter inches short. It's not just the bowling and the batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, the fielding aspect that could turn the game India's way. I won't be surprised if he is like the Ravi Shastri of 1985, if he is like the Champion of Champions," Gavaskar explained.

India ended their Asia Cup campaign on a disappointing note by failing to make it to the final. They were tournament-favourites prior to the multi-nation event but failed to get past the Super Four round after defeats at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively. While Rohit Sharma & Co. fell flat in pressure situations to bow out, the national side would be pleased seeing Virat Kohli return to form in the continental tournament, held in the UAE.

Kohli entered the multi-nation tournament with a strong of poor performances in the England tour before opting for a break in the West Indies tour, followed by skipping a second-stringed India's trip to Zimbabwe in mid-August. In the Asia Cup, the 33-year-old ended with second-most runs in the tournament, slamming 276 runs in five outings, and also ended his century drought to announce his return to form in style. His good returns will surely keep the team management in good stead ahead of the T20 World Cup -- in Australia from October-November -- and hope for him to continue in a similar manner.

It is to be noted that Kohli's 71st international ton came when he opened the Indian innings, in Rohit's absence, during the Men in Blue's inconsequential Super Four clash versus Afghanistan in Dubai. Thus, former Indian batter Rohan Gavaskar feels the right-hander should continue to open in the shortest format.

“Look, in terms of should Virat be opening, I think it’s a great option. You look at his T20 numbers, they are outstanding. He averages about 55-57 and his strike rate is about 160. Those are phenomenal numbers. His last innings, again unbeaten innings of 122, tells you that he probably relishes opening as well,” Gavaskar said while interacting with Sports18.

"If memory serves me right, he wanted to open or he said he wanted to open in the Indian T20 league in this edition or the last edition, he said that’s the spot I want to be. So, it’s obviously something that he wants to do. So, it’s definitely a big option for the Indian team,” the former left-handed batsman added.

It will be interesting to see if Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team will opt to change the opening pair and promote Kohli up the order. Incase that happens, it will be intriguing to see where they slot white-ball vice-captain KL Rahul going ahead in the shortest format of the game.

'A big option for Team India' - Rohan Gavaskar shares Virat Kohli's ideal batting spot ahead of T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli made a remarkable comeback in international cricket during the Asia Cup 2022 edition, after his break post the England tour, to return with scores of 35 (34), 59* (44), 60 (44), 0 (4) and 122* (61). Despite India's campaign ending on a disappointing note, Rohit Sharma & Co. will be breathing a sigh of relief that their star batter Kohli has regained form heading into the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November.

As Kohli ended his international century drought during the continental tournament, eventually won by Sri Lanka, by finally slamming his 71st ton at the highest level during India's consolation win over Afghanistan, he has put an end to all talks regarding his form concerns. Thus, he will now step into India's last few white-ball matches, in the run-up to the T20 WC, with a free mind and look to carry his form in the upcoming ICC tournament to help India win the coveted trophy Down Under.

Ahead of India's next few assignments, at home, and the T20 WC, former Pakistan captain-cum-all-rounder Shahid Afridi lavished huge praise on Kohli and also shared retirement advice for the ex-Indian captain. "The way Virat has played, the start that he had to his career, there was struggle initially before he made a name for himself. He is a champion and I believe there comes a stage when you are headed towards retirement. But in that scenario, the aim should be to go out on a high," Afridi told Samaa TV.

"It shouldn't reach a stage where you are dropped from the team and instead when you are at your peak. It seldom happens though. The 33-year-old Kohli will be desperate to add a T20 WC trophy to his cabinet, having already won the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy with the national side. While he surely has a lot of cricket left in him before even thinking of retirement, the veteran will also take a leaf from Afridi and aim to sign off on a high.

In 468 internationals, Kohli has amassed 8,074, 12,344 and 3,584 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively, and is already a legend of the gentlemen's game.

'Shouldn't reach stage where....': Shahid Afridi's advice for Virat Kohli on international retirement

Sanju Samson was trending on Twitter soon after India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday. The wicket-keeper batter was not in the reckoning for selection but many believed he had an outside chance due to his experience and brilliant strokeplay which could have helped the Indian team during the showpiece event in Australia next month.

However, much to the dejection of many, Samson was snubbed from the 15-man squad with India selecting Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik as the two wicket-keeper batters in the team. Like many, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria was also left baffled by Samson's absence from India's squad and called the decision unfair.

Kaneria believes Samson should have made the cut ahead of Pant in the squad and that he has not been given enough opportunities by the selectors despite performing well.

“It is a bit unfair for someone like Sanju Samson. He should have been considered for the T20 World Cup squad. What has he done wrong to not find a place? He has also been ignored for India’s home series against Australia and South Africa. I would have gone for Samson instead of Rishabh Pant,” Kaneria said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Samson last featured for India on their tour of Zimbabwe last month where he scored 58 runs in two ODIs. The talented wicket-keeper batter has been around for a while now but hasn't quite managed to live up to the expectations due to his inconsistent performances.

He was part of India's squad in the T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this year where Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had lavished praise on the star batter and called him a match-winner. Rohit had said the Indian team management wanted to give opportunities to Samson as he is someone who has a range of shots and he can be useful in Australia.

“As a team management, we see a lot of potential, we see a lot of talent and we see a lot of match-winning abilities in that individual (Sanju Samson),” Rohit Sharma had said about Samson.

“His back-foot play is superb, some of the shots you must have seen during the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over bowler’s head. Those kinds of shots are not easy to play and I believe when we go to Australia, you need that kind of shot-making ability and Samson does have it in him. I just hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum,” he added.

However, the 27-year-old has missed the bus once again and will be hoping to spark a turnaround in his international career with better performances in the opportunities that come his way in the future. Samson has so far played 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is in his career, amassing 176 and 296 runs in the two formats respectively.

Also Read: India's T20 WC squad: Dravid-Rohit favoured R Ashwin over Md Shami during selection meeting - Report “As a team management, we see a lot of potential, we see a lot of talent and we see a lot of match-winning abilities in that individual (Sanju Samson),” Rohit Sharma had said about Samson.

Unfair for Sanju Samson: Former Pakistan cricketer questions his absence from India's T20 World Cup squad

India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup was announced on Monday evening (September 12). While there were some notable omissions, a lot of mainstays were included. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad is a good mix of youth and experience and are serious title-contenders if they play to their potential in the forthcoming showpiece event in Australia.

After the squad announcement, many former cricketers and experts of the game shared their take on the team list shared by the BCCI. In this regard, T20 World Cup medallist Robin Uthappa also opined on the squad and pointed out just one issue which the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management need to address.

"[Yuzvendra] Chahal, Axar [Patel], and Ashwin are all intelligent, shrewd, and wicket-taking bowlers. Their intent will be to always look for wickets. The top four looks extremely formidable, the lower-middle order looks solid as well, they just have to find clarity over that No. 5 spot," Uthappa was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. "That would be between Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda,"he further asserted.

Bhuvi has shown what he can do and I think he will be effective in Australia as well. Uthappa, a member of the MS Dhoni-led team who won the inaugural T20 WC title in 2007, is confident of the Men in Blue's chances but Rohit & Co. will like to make the most of their leftover matches ahead of the mega event Down Under. 'Have to find clarity over...': Uthappa gives thumbs up to India's T20 WC squad, points out one issue

India's final squad for the T20 World Cup was announced by the BCCI selection committee on Monday (September 12). A strong team, led by Rohit Sharma, has been named as the Men in Blue ardent fans are expecting fireworks from the national side in the upcoming ICC event, to be held in Australia from October-November. The squad comprises a good mix of youth and experience whereas there are a few notable omissions.

While there are always varied reactions on squad selections, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has advised one and all to back the Rohit-led side for the showpiece event Down Under. Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said, "This looks a very good team. With Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel coming in, it looks like India will be able to defend their totals. India have had problems in trying to defend totals. These two stalwarts coming in will certainly give the edge to India when defending totals."

He further asserted, "Deepak Chahar is one name that stands out, but they have also retained Arshdeep Singh, who gives a left-arm option in the attack. Like I said, it's a good selection. Now that the selection is done, it's our team, back them 100 per cent."

In the main squad, the likes of Rohit, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik have been named whereas the likes of Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh have also made the cut. Senior bowlers R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah have been added whereas Harshal Patel also found a spot. Among the reserves, India have kept more bowling options by including Md Shami, Deepak Chahar and Ravi Bishnoi whereas Shreyas Iyer is a backup batter.

India will kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan, on October 23 at the MCG, Melbourne, as they are placed in Pool B along with the Men in Green, South Africa, Bangladesh and two more teams will join both groups from the qualifiers.

'We can always crib but...: Sunil Gavaskar reacts as BCCI names India's final squad for T20 World Cup

After much speculation, India's final squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup was announced on Monday (September 12). The BCCI selection committee announced a strong 15-member squad with four players being named in the standby list. There wasn't much surprise in the final squad with pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned post injury concerns whereas Sanju Samson, Md Siraj, Ishan Kishan, etc. were the notable omissions.

Talking about the standby players, the likes of Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi have made the cut. Shami hasn't played a single T20I post last year's World Cup, however, given how the pace battery fared at the Asia Cup, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led team management have included the senior pacer in the reserves. He is also part of the squads for the Australia and South Africa home T20Is. As per a report in InsideSport, there was a toss-up between Shami and R Ashwin while selecting the 15-man squad but Dravid-Rohit favoured the latter; pushing Shami's name in the reserve list.

Shami vs Ashwin

As per report, the selection committee was torn between including one of Shami or Ashwin in the final squad but Rohit-Dravid preferred the veteran off-spinner given his vast experience of bowling in Australia and the staggering success he enjoys against left-handed batters.

“The fact remains that they have drafted Mohammed Shami as a standby for the World Cup also goes to show that maybe they still have doubts about Bumrah and Harshal’s fitness. That’s why perhaps they want to keep Shami in the loop,” former national selector Saba Karim had told while speaking to Sportstar.

Given that both Bumrah and Harshal are returning from injuries, the team management will not be keen to include them straightaway into the playing XI. Even if they do, the two bowlers can take time to get going. Thus, Shami's inclusion is justified as his importance will be significant in such a scenario. He will be eager to make a mark in the upcoming white-ball series versus the Aussies and SA, at home, before the team leaves for Australia for the T20 WC.

India's T20 WC squad: Dravid-Rohit favoured R Ashwin over Md Shami during selection meeting - Report

Team India bowed out of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, eventually won by Sri Lanka, by winning only one game in the Super Four round. With a disappointing performance, Rohit Sharma & Co. are under pressure with the T20 World Cup nearing its commencement. Ahead of the showpiece event in Australia, from October-November, India are set to play as many as three bilateral series at home, including two T20Is and a 50-over series.

India will play Australia in three T20Is and then host South Africa in as many T20Is and ODIs. Playing an ODI series right before the T20 WC doesn't make any sense. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan is expected to lead the ODI bunch in the SA home series with all the T20 WC-bound players set to be rested, as per a report in InsideSport. With Dhawan to take charge, VVS Laxman -- current NCA head -- is likely to act as the stand-in coach with Rahul Dravid & Co. flying Down Under.

"Yes, it is not ideal to have an ODI series before the T20 World Cup, but that is how it goes sometimes. Rohit, Virat, and all T20 World Cup-bound players will be rested from the ODI series. They will get a short break before departing for Australia. Shikhar will lead the side," a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Star players such as Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Harshal Patel might feature in the ODIs versus Temba Bavuma-led Proteas due to lack of match practice. Both Bumrah and Harshal missed the Asia Cup due to injury concerns but are expected to be a part of the final squad for the T20 WC. Hence, the pace duo might be given a run in the SA ODIs as well, along with white-ball vice-captain Rahul who has returned to international cricket only in mid-August.

It is reported that Indian players are expected to leave for Australia on October 10, six days before their first warm-up game. But head coach Dravid wants his players to get as much competitive practice as possible and, thus, can himself be a part of the Proteas ODIs and then leave with his players on October 12, along with their South African counterparts. Nonetheless, the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya will still be rested in any case.

"Rahul wants the players to have better competitive practice, but we believe it could be detrimental. However, it will be put to discussion during the selection meeting and we will decide in due course. If Rahul decides to stay with the squad for ODIs, the squad will leave for Australia along with South African players on October 12," the BCCI official added.

Given that India failed in the last edition of the T20 WC and slipped downwards in the Asia Cup, they will be extra cautious in how they move ahead going into the upcoming ICC event (from next month).

Shikhar Dhawan to captain India in home ODIs vs SA with T20 WC-bound players to be rested: Report

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. The Men in Blue have named a strong 15-man squad after their disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where they failed to make it to the final.

While Bumrah and Harshal have made their comeback into the squad, India have also retained the experienced Dinesh Karthik as the specialist finisher while roping in Axar Patel as a like-to-like replacement for the injured Ravindra Jadeja. Yuzvendra Chahal will lead the spin attack alongside veteran R Ashwin.

Much to the surprise of many, there are not many changes in India's squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia this year when compared to the last edition of the tournament which was staged in the UAE. India have made a total of only six changes from the 15-man squad that featured in the World Cup last year where the Men in Blue endured a disastrous campaign.

This comes as surprise as the Indian team had been experimenting significantly under new skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid with the future in mind. Several youngsters have been given the opportunity to showcase their talent on the big stage for India in the last few months but not many have managed to make the cut.

Here is a look at the changes in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad from last year:

Ins - Dinesh Karthik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel

Outs - Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja would have been a certain pick in India's squad this year had he not undergone knee surgery recently. He has been replaced in the team by Axar, who might not be a first-choice starter. Karthik has come in for Ishan Kishan, who has failed to retain his spot due to a lack of chances and his inconsistent performances.

Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion was a surprise last year and he has been roped back in at the expense of Rahul Chahar, who failed to impress in the World Cup last year. India have gone with an extra a-round option in the form of Deepak Hooda this time around instead of having an extra spinner - Varun Chakaravarthy.

Who is in, who is out? A look at changes in India's squads for T20 Word Cup 2021 and 2022

It was a dream come true moment for Dinesh Karthik as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday. Karthik has been selected in India's squad for the World Cup down under as one of the two wicket-keepers along with Rishabh Pant. The veteran wicket-keeper batter has had a remarkable year so far and will be looking to continue his fine form in the showpiece event next month.

Karthik has completed a stunning redemption with his selection in India's T20 World Cup team. Having last played for India in the ODI World Cup in 2019, the 37-year-old made his comeback to the team earlier this year after a brilliant campaign in IPL 2022 where he lit up games with his finishing heroics.

He continued his fine form for India in the shortest format of the game and has now managed to make the cut in the T20 World Cup squad as the team's designated finisher. He took to Twitter to react to his inclusion and posted a heartfelt message for all. "Dreams do come true," wrote Karthik.

Karthik has played 18 T20Is for India this year since making his comeback to the team and has scored 193 runs at an average of 21.44 while batting in the lower-middle order. It remains to be seen if he will manage to pip Pant as the first-choice wicket-keeper batter in the T20 World Cup or if he will be used as a specialist batter.

Apart from Karthik's inclusion, India's squad also saw the return of fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel after they recovered from their respective injuries. Dreams do come true: Dinesh Karthik reacts after being selected in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad

After a disappointing campaign in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, India will now shift their focus to the twin home series versus Australia and South Africa, respectively. India are set to host Australia in three T20Is before South Africa arrives for three T20Is and ODIs each. Prior to that, the BCCI selection committee, on Monday (September 12), announced two strong squads for Australia, SA series along with also revealing the final 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, to be held from October-November in Australia.

Talking about the Australia series, India will host the defending champions in three T20Is starting from September 20. The matches will be held on September 20 (Mohali), September 23 (Nagpur) and September 25 (Hyderabad). For this series, pacer Arshdeep Singh -- who was heavily trolled for his dropped catch in the India-Pakistan Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup -- has been rested.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested for the SA T20Is, which will get underway on September 28. The remaining two T20Is will be held on October 02 (Guwahati) and October 04 (Indore). After this, a Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian team is likely to face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series, from October 06, with all the T20 WC-bound players set to be rested (as per reports).

The biggest takeaway from the 16-man squads for the Australia and SA series is that India have recalled senior pacer Md Shami along with Deepak Chahar. Chahar was a late entry into the main squad of the Asia Cup, with Avesh Khan's illness, but Shami is set to return to the T20I squad for the first time after last year's World Cup. Along with Shami, Jasprit Burmah and Harshal Patel will be eager to return to action in style after lengthy injury layoffs.

With the T20I series versus Australia and SA being the last few games before India leave for Australia for the World Cup, the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. have been included in both the squads. However, they are all expected to miss the SA ODIs.

Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar make the cut in India's T20I squad for Australia, South Africa home series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (September 12) announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. There are no major surprises in the squad as fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have returned after recovering well from their respective injuries.

The BCCI selection committee met on Monday afternoon to pick the squad after India's disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where the team failed to make it to the final. India's bowling woes were left exposed in the tournament and the pace attack has been strengthened for the World Cup with the return of Bumrah and Harshal.

Both the pacers had missed the bus for Asia Cup after suffering injuries. They have now fully recovered and have been undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Bumrah and Harshal will spearhead India's pace battery alongside the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh.

Senior pacer Mohammed Shami was believed to be in contention to make a comeback in the T20 squad after a dismal show from Indian pacers in the Asia Cup. However, he has been selected as one of the standby players alongside Deepak Chahar and young spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who was part of India's Asia Cup squad.

In the absence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who failed to make the cut after undergoing knee surgery recently, Axar Patel has been roped in as a like-to-like replacement. Hardik Pandya remains India's first-choice all-rounder while Deepak Hooda will also be expected to chip in with the ball when required.

There are no major changes in the batting line-up from the squad that was picked for the Asia Cup. The likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and others have also missed out as the selectors have retained the top four of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav along with Pandya and Hooda in the middle.

Both Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik have made the cut as expected. While Pant is likely to be the first-choice wicket-keeper, Karthik might have made the cut as a specialist finisher based on his current form. India have kept Shreyas Iyer in the reserves as a backup in case of injuries.

Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel return as India announce 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022

Team India had a disappointing run in the just-concluded Asia Cup, where they failed to get past the Super Four round. After topping their group, India lost their opening two games in the Super Four and bowed out despite thumping Afghanistan by 101 runs. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia from October-November, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag opened up on a glaring issue that Indian players need to address.

In the recent past, there have been a lot of injury concerns for the Men in Blue. The likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Harshal Patel, etc. have been injured, which has added to India's woes. In the Asia Cup, Jadeja was ruled out with a knee injury and is very likely to not be a part of the T20 WC squad. Thus, Sehwag feels Indian players shouldn't lift heavy weights in the gym during the course of a series.

“India's problems have been injuries that didn't happen on the cricket field. No one is addressing that. Hardik Pandya got injured while bowling. Most of the players are getting injured at the gym or outside the match. We didn't see Jadeja getting injured on a cricket field. After the match, we came to know that he has an injury. That means the things that are happening outside or in the gym need to be addressed," said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

“Skills are important. Once you are in the Indian team and playing a series, gym is not as important as skills. If you have a two-month break, then fitness becomes important,” the former Indian opener opined.

Sehwag further asserted, “I learnt this from Sachin Tendulkar. Whenever he came into the team, I never saw him lifting more than 6-8kg weights. I asked him, 'what's the point of lifting such low weights?' He replied, 'this is my maintenance. I've to play a match, I'm only doing this to keep my rhythm intact, so that I don't lose my power'. You see the players these days, Virat Kohli and others posting videos of lifting 50-60-70 kg weights during a series, which actually increases the chances of injury,” he concluded.

As per reports, the BCCI selectors are set to announce India's T20 WC squad on Monday evening (September 12). It will be interesting to see who all make the cut and who will be the players to miss out due to injury issues. Ahead of the upcoming ICC event, India will host Australia and South Africa in white-ball series and look to avoid injury concerns before boarding the flight for Australia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday (September 12). The selectors face some major selection headaches after India's disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where they were dumped out of the competition from the Super Four stage.

As per a report in the Times of India, there will be an online meeting of the BCCI selection panel on Monday afternoon where the squad for the T20 World Cup will be picked and announced later in the day. Head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma are also expected to be part of the meeting.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who recently underwent knee surgery is unlikely to be picked as he will remain out of action for a few months. Jadeja was ruled out midway through India's Asia Cup campaign after aggravating his knee injury during training.

However, in what comes as a major boost for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia next month, fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have recovered well and are available for selection. The duo had missed the Asia Cup dues to respective injuries and their absence was dearly felt by the Indian team.

While Bumrah and Harshal are expected to make the cut, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami also remains in contention. Shami has not been in India's T20I plans for a while now but he remains in contention as the selectors might look at fresh changes in the pace attack after a disappointing show from the fast bowlers in the Asia Cup.

Avesh Khan, who was part of India's squad in the Asia Cup, failed to impress and might make way for Shami. However, the likes of Deepak Chahar and Umran Malik are also among major contenders for a spot in the final 15 alongside Bumrah, Harshal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh.

India's middle-order to looked unsettled in Jajdeja's absence during the Asia Cup and it remains to be seen if the likes of Sanju Samson or Shreyas Iyer will be included in the squad to add depth to India's batting. The selectors will also have to take a call whether they want to pick Dinesh Karthik as a specialist finisher or first-choice wicket-keeper batter ahead of Rishabh Pant.

Both Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda are expected to keep their spots along with the top three of skipper Rohit, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, who rediscovered his form in the Asia Cup with some splendid performances.

India's predicted squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Although Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja put on an inspiring performance in the Asia Cup, it seems like their future in the shortest format of the game may be in jeopardy.

The senior official revealed that should everything go according to the BCCI's plan, Kohli and Jadeja may be asked to step down from their T20I roles so that they can be preserved for longer formats.

"See, it’s nothing new. After every big event, there is a transition period. After last year’s World Cup, Shami was transitioned to focus on the two formats. Virat isn’t getting any younger. With the number of matches we play, he has to be managed as well.

"And we feel there needs to be a change. For Jadeja, the sheer number of injuries is a concern. We will discuss the transition plans after the World Cup."

Although Kohli would prefer to compete freely across formats, it is important to note that it is impractical to compete consistently at the highest level with the amount of cricket that is being played.

BCCI official admits Virat Kohli’s spot in India's T20I squad not confirmed after World Cup

Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the greatest batters to have played the game and is often pipped against his contemporaries when it comes to the debate over the best in the world. Kohli has been one of the most prolific run-getters for India over the years and has already established his credentials as one of the best of all time.

Despite his lean patch in international cricket over the last few months, Kohli's numbers remained world-class and it was only a matter of time before he returned to form in the Asia Cup 2022. The former India captain rediscovered his old mojo in the Asia Cup with back-to-back fifties and a much-awaited 71st international century.

Kohli notched up a fantastic knock of 122 runs against Afghanistan to bring an end to his nearly three-year-long wait for an international hundred and joined Ricky Ponting at the second spot on the list of batters with the most number of centuries in international cricket. While Kohli went on a redemption journey, his competitor Babar Azam suffered a dip in form in the Asia Cup.

The duo share a great rapport with each other but the Pakistan captain has often been compared against Kohli for his batting exploits across formats for the Men in Green. Babar has not been at his best in the Asia Cup with only 64 runs in five matches so far.

Ahead of the final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq was asked for his take on the Kohli vs Babar debate. While he picked the Pakistan skipper over the Indian batting maestro, Mushtaq admitted Kohli has a special place in his heart.

"Definitely Babar kahunga... but Virat mere dil ke bohot karib hai (I will definitely pick Babar, but Virat is close to my heart).

With over 24,000 runs in international cricket, Kohli is already cunted among the legends of the game and Babar has a long way to go if he needs to come close to the former India captain. Babar has been among the most consistent batters across formats in the last few years but he will have to continue performing at the same level for a number of years to match Kohli.

Babar will be looking to bounce back to form and make an impactful contribution when Pakistan lock horns with Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Pakistan last won the tournament in 2012 while Sri Lanka have not won the title since 2014.

What went wrong for Rohit Sharma-led India in Asia Cup 2022?

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently offered fans insight into his take on Virat Kohli's athletic prowess and prospects on the field.

Ganguly waxed lyrical about Kohli in a recently surfaced video on YouTube. He admitted that even though they had competed on the field in different generations, Kohli had the makings of surpassing Ganguly owing to his unique set of skills.

Ganguly also admitted that although he had featured in more matches than Kohli over the course of his lengthy career, the 33-year-old is well on his way to overcome him in that regard.

“The comparison should be in terms of skill as a player. I think he is more skilful than I’m. We played in different generations, and we played a lot of cricket."

"I played in my generation, and he will continue playing, probably playing more games than I did. Currently, I have played more than what he has but he’ll get past that. He is tremendous.”

He subsequently went on to admit that he was counting on Kohli to make his way back to his former glory, which he seems like he has as the former Indian skipper managed to record his first international ton against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup.

“Let him practice, let him play matches. He is a big player and has scored plenty of runs. I am hopeful that he will make a comeback. He is just not being able to score a century and I believe he will find his form in the Asia Cup,” said Ganguly.

Having recorded the international century that had remained extremely elusive for over 1000 days, Virat Kohli will hope to carry the same form into his upcoming outings alongside the Men in Blue.

"I played in my generation, and he will continue playing, probably playing more games than I did. Currently, I have played more than what he has but he’ll get past that. He is tremendous.” He subsequently went on to admit that he was counting on Kohli to make his way back to his former glory, which he seems like he has as the former Indian skipper managed to record his first international ton against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri lauded Virat Kohli and said the batting maestro will be feeling much lighter after bringing an end to his long-standing century drought against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022 on Thursday. Kohli brought an end to a wait of 1020 days to notch up his 71st century in international cricket.

It was brilliant knock from the former India captain, who had headed into the tournament amid massive criticism over his lean patch. Kohli seemed to have found his lost mojo in the tournament as he scored runs consistently before shattering his century drought against Afghanistan on Thursday.

It was a brilliant knock of 122 runs off 61 balls for Kohli as he slammed his maiden hundred in T20Is and set up a comfortable 101-run win for India. Even though, Kohli never spoke about his century drought bothering him, Shastri said the India batter would be feeling five kilos lighter as the monkey is off his back now.

"You mentioned 1020 days, I can say 700 days I was in that dressing room when that happened. It's a long time. The monkey is off his back now. When you had astounding success like he has, when 70 hundreds come like this, then you go through a patch of one, two years, two-and-half years, two-and-three quarter years, and then everyday people start reminding - 'It's been that long'. He is human. It would have been eating him up. He would be getting up every morning, whether thinking of it or not, subconsciously being reminded," Shastri said on Star Sports.

"Today, I think he will be five kilos less. Don't ask me where the weight has gone from, five kilos less at least from the head. You could see from the last 40 runs of his innings. It was Virat Kohli. His trade mark shots, the confidence, the poise, the utter disdain for bowling is back. It took a long time coming," he added.

Experiment in bilateral series not Asia Cup: Former World Cup-winner after India's dismal show

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes no one would have survived for three years in the Indian crickt team without a century in international cricket. Gambhir believes Kohli got a long rope despite not scoring a hundred for over 1,000 days but no other batter would have earned that luxury.

Kohli, who brought an end to his long-standing century drought on Thursday, had scored his last ton for India in November 2019. He went without scoring a century for a staggering 1020 days between November 2019 to September 2022 before finnaly ending the drought with a stunning 122-run knock against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022 earlier this week.

Kohli's lean patch with the willow saw him face crictisim from all corners in the build up to the Asia Cup with many also questioining his spot in the India's T20I squad. However, he had the continuous backing of the team management despite not delivering consistently.

"You have to realise that it is three years, not three months. Three years is a very long time. And I'm not trying to be critical of him, but he has earned that just because he has got loads of runs in the past. But I don't think so that any of the younger batters would have survived in international cricket had they not got a hundred in last three years," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The former India opener cited the example of the likes of current skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and R Ashwin among others who have all been droped under Kohli's captaincy in the past for not performing consistently. Gambhir believes only Kohli could have survived without a century for three years as he has earned that cushion with his past performances.

"Eventually it had to happen and it happened at the right time as well. You are just approaching the T20 World Cup and he's got a hundred so he has got the monkey off his back. But let's be fair and absolutely honest, I don't think any one in the dressing room would have survived three years without a hundred," said Gambhir.

People like Ashwin, Rahane, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have been dropped. I don't know one guy who hasn't been dropped after not having scored a hundred in three years. It is only Virat Kohli and probably he has earned that," he added.

Kohli brought an end to a long wait for his 71st hundred in style with a magnificent knock against Afghanistan. He scored 122 off 61 balls laced with 12 fours and two sixes. It was Kohli's maiden ton in T20Is as he registered the highest score by an Indian batter in the shortest format to power India to a 101-run victory in the game.

India head coach Rahul Dravid has been on the receiving end of strong criticism after his team's disappointing exit from the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. Defending champions India were dumped out after back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their first two Super Four clashes.

They went on to register a big win in the dead-rubber against Afghanistan in the final encounter but that was not enough to paper over the cracks that emerged in the team's campaign in the Asia Cup. India's exit from the tournament has served as a wake up call for the team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia this year.

Former India selector Saba Karim believes it is 'crunch time' for Dravid as the honeymoon period is over for him now as the head coach of the Indian team. With the T20 World Cup this year and the ODI World Cup next year, nothing less than the title will be treated as success for Dravid and his support staff.

"Well, even Rahul Dravid is aware that the honeymoon period is over, and he is trying his best to be an alchemist but so far, such metals haven't been converted into core. One would expect him to do that. This is crunch time for Rahul Dravid," Saba Karim said on Sports18.

"With the World Cup T20 coming up, next year the ODI World Cup coming up. These two big ICC events, if India can win both these championships then only Rahul Dravid will be satisfied with the kind of inputs he has given to team India," he added.

Dravid was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team after Ravi Shastri's exit last year and the expectations were high from the legend. India have enjoyed great success under him as far as bilateral series are concerned, however, the team failed to deliver in their first major ICC tournament under him.

Karim, who played 34 ODIs and one Test for India, believes Dravid would love to swap the bilateral series wins with the one-off Test that India lost against England or the Test series that India lost against South Africa, however, that is the kind of challenges he faces as the head coach of the team.

"If given an option Rahul Dravid would love to have those Test series win in South Africa and the last Test match in England. He would love to swap that with so many bilateral wins that India has got under his belt. But that's the nature of the challenges which Rahul Dravid has to face," said Karim.

"See Rahul is sensible and intelligent enough to understand that the only way he can define a successful tenure of his coaching career is if India - number one, wins ICC events and number two it starts to win Test series in SENA countries. I'm not talking about Test wins. Test wins even while Rahul Dravid was playing, India has done that. But more importantly, when India starts to win in SENA countries, the Test series, that's when Rahul Dravid will be very happy with team India's performance," he explained.

Virat Kohli ended his international drought on Thursday (September 8) as India faced Afghanistan in their last Super Four clash before bowing out of the Asia Cup 2022 edition. Bing asked to bat first, a Rohit Sharma-less Indian team rode on Kohli's 122 not out (off 61 balls), who opened the innings with stand-in captain KL Rahul, to post a mammoth 212-3.

In reply, Afghanistan fell like nine pins in the run-chase by being restricted to 111/8 in 20 overs to lose by a whopping 101-run margin. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with 5 for 4 in his full quota of overs to stand tall but the Player-of-the-Match Kohli generated maximum eyeballs. Kohli's innings was laced with 12 fours and 6 sixes and his return to form is a huge blessing for Rohit & Co. heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia. The 33-year-old Kohli's hundred is a huge sigh of relief for many Indian cricket fans, worldwide, who have been eagerly waiting for King Kohli to move past his ordinary run of form.

As soon as Kohli smacked an impressive pull over the fence to reach triple figures, the crowd -- at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai -- were sent into a frenzy. An elderly fan's unmissable reaction, present in the stands, went viral in no time as Kohli raised his bat and acknowledged the crowd after reaching his 71st international ton. Here's the video of the elderly fan bowing down to the Indian star batter:

Time away from the game gave me a good chance to sit back and observe a lot of things about me. I mentioned one special person - Anushka - who stood by me through these tough times and I mentioned her as she has seen the absolute raw side of me throughout all these months. She was the one putting things in perspective for me, kept giving me the right kind of guidance, vision moving forward and I came back into the system as a relaxed person. It was just about enjoying the game, understanding the game and what God blessed you with. Today was the build-up of the last few games, I batted out of my skin to be honest and I surprised myself. What surprised me was my 60s became failures; quite shocking for me, batting pretty well and contributing but doesn't seem to be enough. I can't really pinpoint anything to anyone as I said God has blessed me with good things in the past and that's why I am in this position where these things can be spoken about."

The No. 1 ranked Indian team entered the Asia Cup 2022 edition -- being played in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup -- as favourites and were expected to win the trophy for the third time in a row. Despite topping their group, India lost their opening two games in the Super Four round and bowed out of the multi-nation tournament with Pakistan-Sri Lanka making it to the final.

Thrashing Afghanistan by 101 runs on Thursday evening (September 8), India settled for the penultimate spot in the Super Four by signing off from the tournament with a total of three wins and two defeats (versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively). Losing to arch-rivals Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last over, India have been slammed left, right and centre with many taking a dig at their preparations for the upcoming ICC event. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came in India's defence and has reckoned that 'losing a couple of games doesn't make them a terrible team.'

"Irrespective of whether we would have won those games, you got to keep things in perspective. In T20s, the margins are so small. It's not that because we won that tight game against Pakistan, everything becomes perfect. We lost a couple of games, which had gone down on a wicket that wasn't easy to defend," Dravid said in an interview on Star Sports.

"We've taken the games down to the last ball. I'm not using that as an excuse. I still think we should have gotten over the line in at least one of those games. But we would have to still learn. We haven't been perfect. Just because we lost a couple of games, it doesn't mean we are a terrible team. We have been playing good cricket over the past 8-9 months."

"A couple of injuries and illnesses means your balance the team goes whack. In tournaments such as these, the margins become very small. The whole point is not to overreact, we can tend to go to extremes at some time. The kind of environment we want to create is very balanced," the former Indian captain-turned-coach added.

India will now shift their focus to their twin T20I series, at home, versus Australia and South Africa, respectively. After that, the Rohit-led side will head to Australia in a bid to win their second T20 WC trophy.

'Because we lost few games, doesn't mean we're a terrible team'- Rahul Dravid defends under-fire Team India

After a forgettable run at the Asia Cup, India will look to amend their mistakes ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia from October-November. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad for the showpiece event sooner than later as many cricket boards have already announced their respective squads.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), the Indian team's squad for the upcoming ICC event is likely to be announced on September 16. Jasprit Bumrah's fitness is reportedly a reason behind the delay in squad announcement as the premier pacer is in rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru after missing out on the Asia Cup due to a back injury. Moreover, Harshal Patel is also working on his fitness after not being part of the Rohit Sharma-led national side in the Asia Cup where the Men in Blue failed to make it to the final.

Thus, Bumrah's fitness is eagerly awaited by the BCCI before announcing the squad of the one-time winners heading into the T20 WC Down Under. With the marquee tournament just over a month away, the BCCI selectors are still not worried about Bumrah's fitness as he is expected to be deemed fit.

“Bumrah has not been declared fit yet. He is going to be at the NCA this week before the selection. The World Cup is still over a month away. Therefore, his selection will happen considering that,” a BCCI source told TOI. Given India's ordinary bowling performances in the continental tournament, being held in the UAE, India will be desperate to regain the services of both Bumrah and Harshal. Many are also discussing Mohammed Shami's inclusion despite the senior pacer having not played a single T20I since last year's World Cup in the UAE.

Given Shami's experience, good run in IPL 2022 and the the current Indian bowling line-up lagging behind, the 32-year-old might be roped in. After bowing out of the Asia Cup, India will host Australia followed by South Africa in T20I series before boarding the flight to Australia. It will be interesting to see what all changes the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team management makes for the mega event.
