'Zero tolerance toward corruption,' says Ganguly after taking charge as BCCI President

<p>The Indian cricket board has launched investigations into suspected match fixers who approached a member of the women's national team and players in a regional Twenty20 league, its anti-corruption head said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>A case has been registered against two suspects in Bengaluru after they approached a member of the Indian women's team, Ajit Singh, the head of the Anti-Corruption Unit at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told Reuters by telephone.</p>

<p>"She was approached before a home series by people who expected her to be part of the India squad and wanted her to play according to their script," Singh said without identifying the player.</p>

<p>"She asked them to call to another number, recorded the conversation and reported the approach to us," Singh said.</p>

<p>In another incident, several players in this year's Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) were approached by suspected fixers.</p>

<p>"We are trying to find out what their purpose was. They tried to contact through social media. The moment these players realised something was wrong, they cut out the approaches and reported to us," Singh said.</p>

<p>Singh said no player was being probed.</p>

<p>"I consider it a success of our education programme that in both cases, the players did the right thing by reporting the approaches.</p>

<p>Indian Premier League (IPL), BCCI's showpiece Twenty20 competition, was blighted by illegal betting with former India paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth handed a ban following a spot-fixing scandal in 2013.</p>

<p>The Chennai and Rajasthan franchises were also subsequently suspended from the IPL for two years after key officials from both teams were found guilty of illegal betting.</p>

Indian board probes match fixing approaches in women's game and regional league

Yes, cricket is having a little difficulty in this conflict of interest rule. I think if the papers are put perfectly in the court, they will understand," Edulji told reporters.</p>

<p>Edulji, who was talking to reporters after the conclusion of a meeting between the CoA and Indian cricketers over the conflict of interest rule, said,&nbsp;"Good suggestions came up during the meeting. As of now, a conflict of interest rule has to be followed."</p>

<p>"The amendments will be made once the court gives its verdict. We are trying our level best to see what is best for cricket. If the Supreme Court decides, the amendments will be implemented," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who was part of the meeting, said the cricketers put forth their concerns regarding the conflict of interest rule.</p>

<p>"We were asked for a suggestion as a player. We talked about both current and former players. We had an elaborate discussion. Players shared their concerns. It was a good meeting," said Pathan.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Rahul Dravid was accused of conflict of interest by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association's member Sanjay Gupta. Dravid is the current National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and is also employed as the vice president of India Cements Group.</p>

<p>When this issue came to light, former cricketer Sourav Ganguly had said that conflict of interest has become a new fashion in Indian cricket.</p>

<p>Harbhajan Singh had also agreed with Ganguly's comment. Earlier this year, Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar were questioned over the conflict of interest issue. However, Ravi Thodge, member of the CoA, on August 13 said that there was no conflict of interest in the appointment of Dravid as the NCA's head.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is no conflict in Rahul's case. He has got a notice. We cleared his appointment, as we saw no conflict," Thodge had said.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court on January 30, 2017 had nominated a four-member panel CoA to look after the administration of the BCCI in order to implement Lodha Committee reforms.</p>

Conflict of interest rule to stay in place as of now: CoA member Diana Edulji

<p>Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a net worth of $295 Million as of 2016. Every year, they spend crores of rupees in litigation, several uncalculated amounts are disbursed to promote Indian Premier League (IPL) and other cricket tournaments and let's not forget the office-bearers who are entitled to on trips overseas and for work within the country. &nbsp;</p>

<p>However, little is being done to take care of former players struggling to meet their daily needs. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>For a moment, forget the former big shots, let's visualise about those who don’t reach the highest level and end up being domestic cricketers. Some don't have enough cash to even pay the hospital bills in case of an emergency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Isn't the thought scary?<br />

Yes, it is. And the need to call attention to it became significant after former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin had to be put on a ventilator after suffering extensive damage to his liver and lungs and the family members were forced to beg to the Board to come to their rescue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The board did but with only a paltry amount of Rs 5 lakh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Imagine, Rs 5 lakh is the amount they could all offer from the Benevolent Fund to a person who has played wearing the blue jersey, aiming to bring laurels to his country. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, its easy to presume the life of the former domestic cricketers, who couldn't make it this big.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Supreme Court-appointed CoA chief, Vinod Rai, has a habit of issuing directives on a range of issues but preferred to stay tight-lipped. Couldn't he issue a directive to the concerned professional appointees of the Board to release a special amount for the 46-year-old Martin? But silence says it all.</p>

<p>And therefore to all unsung heroes, we are 'unreservedly' sorry because our board members are busy fighting over the reins of the board with the Supreme Court-appointed committee rather than strategising a way to improve the players' condition in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per reports, the bill has crossed over Rs 11 lakh. Martin is still on ventilator support and the next hours are crucial.</p>

<p>Sourav Ganguly, who was the captain when Martin made his debut, went beyond mere words and effected a bank transfer in Martin’s favour.</p>

<p>He also spoke to Khayati, wife of the ailing Jacob Martin, and assured complete support.</p>

<p>Cricketer Krunal Pandya, elder brother of Hardik Pandya, left a blank cheque with Sanjay Patel, former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Baroda Cricket Association, to help his ailing senior.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former pacer Zaheer Khan made another call to Patel, repeating his wish to assist in whatever manner he can, while Ashish Nehra too has joined the drive to help Martin quickly get back on his feet.</p>

<p>Well, wake up BCCI as it is the board's job that is going on as an extended help from former cricketers, who possibly have a better understanding of the players' condition in the country.&nbsp;<br />

For a moment, forget the former big shots, let's visualise about those who don’t reach the highest level and end up being domestic cricketers. Some don't have enough cash to even pay the hospital bills in case of an emergency. Isn't the thought scary? Yes, it is. And the need to call attention to it became significant after former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin had to be put on a ventilator after suffering extensive damage to his liver and lungs and the family members were forced to beg to the Board to come to their rescue. The board did but with only a paltry amount of Rs 5 lakh. Imagine, Rs 5 lakh is the amount they could all offer from the Benevolent Fund to a person who has played wearing the blue jersey, aiming to bring laurels to his country. Now, its easy to presume the life of the former domestic cricketers, who couldn't make it this big. Supreme Court-appointed CoA chief, Vinod Rai, has a habit of issuing directives on a range of issues but preferred to stay tight-lipped. Couldn't he issue a directive to the concerned professional appointees of the Board to release a special amount for the 46-year-old Martin? But silence says it all. And therefore to all unsung heroes, we are 'unreservedly' sorry because our board members are busy fighting over the reins of the board with the Supreme Court-appointed committee rather than strategising a way to improve the players' condition in India. As per reports, the bill has crossed over Rs 11 lakh. Martin is still on ventilator support and the next hours are crucial. Sourav Ganguly, who was the captain when Martin made his debut, went beyond mere words and effected a bank transfer in Martin’s favour. He also spoke to Khayati, wife of the ailing Jacob Martin, and assured complete support. Cricketer Krunal Pandya, elder brother of Hardik Pandya, left a blank cheque with Sanjay Patel, former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Baroda Cricket Association, to help his ailing senior. Former pacer Zaheer Khan made another call to Patel, repeating his wish to assist in whatever manner he can, while Ashish Nehra too has joined the drive to help Martin quickly get back on his feet. Well, wake up BCCI as it is the board's job that is going on as an extended help from former cricketers, who possibly have a better understanding of the players' condition in the country. Unperturbed over the length of his contract as India&#39;s new head coach, former spinner Anil Kumble believes he has enough time and matches to make an impact.<br />

Kumble, whose only coaching experience has been as mentor of the Mumbai and Bangalore teams in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament, was given a one-year term last week.<br />

For the post, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) received 57 applications which were made available to an advisory panel that included former captains Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly and former batsman VVS Laxman.<br />

The BCCI said Kumble was handed a one-year contract so they could review their options for one of world cricket&#39;s most challenging jobs at the end of that period.<br />

&quot;I am talking about a journey,&quot; former India skipper Kumble told reporters in his first press conference on Wednesday after bagging the job. &quot;There are 17 test matches in the next 12 months.<br />
