After the guns went silent on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan in Kashmir due to the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, the Indian Army has opened the famous Kaman Aman Setu Bridge for the tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army is now promoting the famous areas close to LoC such as Kaman Post in Uri sector of Baramulla district as a tourist spot.

Kaman Aman Setu is a bridge that connects India to Pakistan and was opened for the historic cross-LoC Karawan-e-Aman bus service. This bridge connected the divided families from both the countries and had become a symbol of Peace.

Now, the Indian Army has opened it for the tourists coming to the Valley. The step taken by the Indian army is to help the people living in the areas close to Line of Control.

In some area's Indian army is also helping people with opening homestays and guest houses. ''It's a great step that the Indian army has opened the Kaman Post for the tourists to visit. It will open up local tourism to areas like the Uri sector.

Now, that the Kaman Post has been opened, we wish that areas like Rustum which is a beautiful place should also be opened for tourists. It will help the people of Uri a lot. There are many people who are wanting to see the two main power projects in the area as well. It will benefit the local shopkeepers, restaurant owners, etc as well, '' said a local official.

The initiative has been taken to boost the economy of these areas and help the youngsters in these bordering villages with jobs and business opportunities.

Along with that it is also to make aware the citizens of the country about the history as well as the sacrifices made by the soldiers. The busts of soldiers who laid down their lives fighting the enemy have been put up and are called the ‘Veer Path'. The motive is to inspire the young generation.

''The Upgradation done by the Indian army is commendable. It just made us so happy to see the Kaman Post. We are locals and we invite all the country to visit us and learn about the history of this place. The army has also put up the history about all those soldiers who have laid down their lives in various wars at this place”, said Karim Ahmad, a local student.

The gate of Kaman Aman Setu has not opened for years as the Government suspended the Srinagar Muzaffarabad Bus service. The Indian army at the same location had thrown open the first cafe near to LoC.

The incident occurred at the Sarovar Lake within the Barrackpore Cantonment, about 40 kilometres north of Kolkata. On Wednesday morning, six soldiers were participating in the exercise. While the first three soldiers made it safely, the rope snapped when the remaining were crossing. While one soldier could be rescued, the other two drowned.

An official from the Eastern Command said that assault river crossing exercises are held at the lake on a routine basis.

Such exercises are usually held with all the trappings of a real-life situation, including enemy posts maintaining watch. This means that the soldiers participating (in the exercise) are in full battle gear. It is a 'touch and go' situation if a soldier loses his grip on the rope unless he is an expert swimmer.

"Unfortunately, that is how it is. The army needs to train its personnel for all situations. We have been part of such exercises. Life jackets are not an option, given the weight a soldier carries," a person familiar with developments told IANS.

The person said that incidents (like that of Wednesday) were unfortunate but rare, adding, a probe was certainly required to know why the rope snapped. "If somebody is found responsible, he should be punished," the person further said.

India and Russia are yet to make final headway to clear outstanding rouble payments for New Delhi's defence purchases from Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the US-led economic sanctions against Russia. As the current financial year ends in the absence of a solution to this problem, New Delhi has kicked off a local buying spree for its defence needs, The Indian Express newspaper reported.

This is because a significant chunk of unspent defence funds consist of the rouble payments worth ₹28,000 crore ($3.39 billion) for weapons India procured from Russia, the report concluded. This financial headroom is being utilised for local defence purchases by New Delhi.

The Indian Army has set up a hospital in Turkey to help victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the country. The army hospital is providing relief packages and medical assistance to the victims. The hospital has been set up as part of Operation Dost (or friend in Hindi) launched by India to help Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquake.

A school building has been repurposed to house the 60 Para Field Hospital where 96 people, including orthopaedic surgeons, are treating victims.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Adarsh, second in command at the hospital, the type of casualties have been “multi-trauma cases as expected in this kind of disaster” and “neglected trauma”. He said around 10 surgeries have been performed.

The death toll from a catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria climbed to 33,000 on Sunday, with the United Nations warning that the final number may double.

Officials and medics said 29,605 people had died in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria from Monday's 7.8-magnitude tremor, bringing the confirmed total to 33,179.

A UN convoy with supplies for northwest Syria arrived via Turkey, but the agency's relief chief Martin Griffiths said much more was needed for millions whose homes were destroyed.

"We have so far failed the people in northwest Syria. They rightly feel abandoned. Looking for international help that hasn't arrived," tweeted Martin Griffiths relief chief at the UN.

Tata-Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL), an Indo-American defence and aerospace joint venture firm, has delivered the first fuselage (the central part of an aircraft or helicopter, to which the wings and tail are connected), for the six AH-64 Apache attack helicopters ordered by the Indian Army.

The TBAL facility in the Indian city of Hyderabad is the global sole source supplier for Apache fuselages and has produced complex aero-structures for Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft. The miniature model of the Apache that was shown at the roll-out event indicates that the Army's choppers would sport a 'desert camouflage' look.

The fuselage rolled out of the Hyderabad plant in India, will be supplied to Boeing's Apache final assembly plant in Mesa, Arizona, for further integration. So far, the TBAL plant in India has supplied more than 190 fuselages.

According to the firm, more than 90 per cent of the parts used in these aerostructures' assemblies are manufactured within India via more than 100 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) suppliers.

More than 1,275 units of the Apache helicopters are in operation, accumulating more than 4.9 million flight hours globally, of which 1.3 million have been in combat. The Indian Army's six Apaches are the second fleet of Apaches ordered by India, as the Indian Air Force had taken delivery of 22 AH-64-E variants of the Apache chopper in 2020.

India operates four classes of aircraft from Boeing, the C-17 Globemaster III strategic transporter, the P8I Poseidon multi-role maritime mission aircraft, the Chinook heavy-lift helicopter and the Apache attack helicopters.

TBAL's 14,000sqm facility in India employs over 900 engineers and technicians and utilises advanced robotics, automation, and aerospace concepts in its manufacturing processes.

"This delivery positions TBAL and India as an important manufacturing base in overall Boeing operations. We stay committed towards progression of indigenous defence manufacturing with strong focus on the quality and timely delivery," said Sukaran Singh, MD & CEO, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).

Every year India celebrates Army Day on January 15 to commemorate Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa who became the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army in 1949 replacing his British predecessor. This year, the country is celebrating its 75th Army Day where for the first time the events will take place outside the national capital Delhi since they began over seven decades ago. The Army Day parade, which is the main highlight of the day, was held in India's southern state of Karnataka’s capital city Bengaluru, “in order to give wider visibility and participation of citizens,” as shared by the Ministry of Defence, in a statement.

Why is this day commemorated?

Celebrated across India, Army Day is dedicated to remembering those who fight relentlessly to protect our nation and its people. It also marks an important day which recognises army personnel and celebrates their achievements.

The day January 15, 1949, after the country gained independence, signifies the formal taking over of the Indian Army formally known as the British Indian Army by its first Indian commander-in-chief Field Marshal Cariappa.

The British Indian Army under the administration of the British government was established in 1858. Field Marshal Cariappa, who was a Lieutenant General at the time, succeeded the last British Army Chief Officer, General Sir Francis Robert Roy Bucher on this day over 70 years ago. Therefore, this day is a significant one for India as despite gaining independence in 1947, we did not have an Indian commander-in-chief until 1949.

How is it celebrated?

Every year, the celebrations are marked with several events on the day, including the main Army Day parade which is typically held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in the Delhi Cantonment. In the weeks leading up to January 15, the Indian Army organises outreach programmes and other events like weapons and equipment displays, band performances, quiz competitions, and painting and essay writing competitions in schools and colleges and remote villages, across the nation.

Indian Army Day 2023

As mentioned earlier, this is the first time that this event of national importance is held outside the capital. Noting the significance of this change, the Defence Ministry, last month in a statement said, “While the conduct of this historical event at Bengaluru is in recognition of the valour, sacrifices and services of the people of Southern India for the nation, it is also an apt tribute to Field Marshal KM Cariappa who hails from Karnataka.”

Addressing the media, earlier today, Major General Ravi Murugan, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Karnataka and Kerala sub-area, said that the Army Day parade this year will witness the participation of “eight marching contingents, including a horse-mounted contingent from the Army Service Corps and a military band composed of five regimental brass bands. Each of these contingents represents regiments with glorious histories and unique traditions.”

He added, “The Army Day Parade will be supported by a fly-past of the Army Aviation Dhruv and Rudra helicopters.” This year’s celebrations also took place under the supervision of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, which is headquartered in the state of Maharashtra’s city of Pune.

The day January 15, 1949, after the country gained independence, signifies the formal taking over of the Indian Army formally known as the British Indian Army by its first Indian commander-in-chief Field Marshal Cariappa. ALSO WATCH | 75th Army Day: Celebrations underway in Bengaluru The British Indian Army under the administration of the British government was established in 1858. India: Three Indian Army soldiers killed in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district

In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence, on Tuesday (January 10) said they have approved three capital acquisition proposals amounting to nearly $526 million (Rs. 4,300 crores) for the Indian Army and Navy. This comes after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting chaired by the country’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh who accorded the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) of two proposals by the Indian Army and one by the Navy.

In line with the Indian government's push for Make in India initiative, the three proposals are under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category which refers to a category of acquisition of products from an Indian vendor that has been indigenously designed, developed and manufactured with a minimum of 50 per cent Indigenous Content (IC).

“The DAC accorded AoN for procurement of HELINA Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, launchers and associated support equipment which will be integrated to the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH),” said the defence ministry, in the statement.

Additionally, they also said how the procurement of anti-tank guided missiles is an essential part of weaponising ALHs in “countering enemy threats”. Notably, HELINA is said to be one of the most advanced anti-tank weapons in the world and the defence ministry said that its integration will boost the Indian Army’s offensive capabilities.

The DAC also approved the procurement of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) designed and developed, VSHORAD (IR Homing) missile system. It is said to be “man-portable”, and robust and with its quickly deployable system, it can be swiftly used on rugged terrain as well as in the maritime domain.

The Chinese military blamed the Indian troops for 'illegally' crossing the Line of Actual Control and “obstructing" Chinese border patrol troops leading to the stand-off between the two armies on December 9. According to a statement by a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Western Theatre Command spokesman, the Chinese troops “were obstructed by the Indian army who illegally crossed the Line (of Actual Control)". “Our response measures were professional, standard, and forceful, and stabilized the situation on the ground. At present, China and India have disengaged," he added according to AFP.

The clash between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control in northeastern India's Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang Sector on December 9 has evoked strong political reactions in India. Amid the opposition's demand for a 'stern' response to China, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in the parliament that while China unilaterally attempted to change the status quo along the LAC, the timely intervention by the Indian troops shunned away the Chinese PLA. Beijing said on Tuesday that the situation was stable along the unresolved border with India, adding the two sides "maintained unobstructed dialogue on the border issue through diplomatic and military channels."

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force launched active combat patrols over Arunachal Pradesh after detecting "enhanced Chinese air activity", reports said. Fighter jets had to be scrambled "two-three times" in recent weeks to thwart China, they revealed.

The proceedings at the Indian parliament's lower house, Lok Sabha (House of the people) were adjourned till mid-day on Tuesday amid constant demand by opposition to respond to the gravity of the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Arunachal Pradesh.

Following the opposition's demands and adjournment notices to address the matter, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave a statement in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

India's timely intervention shunned away PLA: Defence Minister

Singh said that China attempted to "unilaterally change the status quo", against which Indian troops responded with a befitting reply. "No Indian soldier lost its life and timely intervention of Indian military commanders shunned away the PLA troops," Rajnath Singh said.

"Our troops bravely stopped PLA from encroaching upon our territory and forced them to go back to their post," he added.

"This matter has also been taken up with China through diplomatic channels. I want to assure the House that our forces are committed to guard our borders and ready to thwart any attempt that will be made to challenge it," Rajnath Singh added further.

Clashes broke out between both sides along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal's Yangste area of the Tawang sector on December 9. Soldiers from both sides sustained injuries as they exchanged barbs with each other.

The face-off reportedly led to minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides. At least Indian six soldiers were injured in the clash and were brought to Guwahati for treatment, as per reports by the news agency PTI.

The situation is 'stable': Chinese foreign ministry

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin did not comment on the reported clash from Tuesday. He told reporters "as far as we understand, the China-India border situation is stable overall," referring to the unresolved border between India and China, officially referred to as the Line of Actual Control due to its perilous nature.

"Both sides have throughout maintained unobstructed dialogue on the border issue through diplomatic and military channels, it is hoped that the Indian side will advance in the same direction as China," he added.

Beijing urged New Delhi to "earnestly implement the important consensus reached by both leaders, strictly abide by the spirit of the agreements and accords signed by both sides, together uphold the peace and tranquillity of the China-India border region."

Indian parliamentarians had moved adjournment notices in both houses of the parliament on Tuesday. While Manish Tewari gave a notice in the lower house, Lok Sabha; Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala and Syed Nasir Hussain gave similar adjournment notices in the upper house, Rajya Sabha.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was quoted by PTI as saying: "Again our Indian Army soldiers have been provoked by the Chinese. Our jawans fought in a resolute manner and a few of them have been injured too."

The Congress party also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged the government to convey intolerance to Chinese infiltration attempts in a 'stern tone'.

"There is news of a clash between the soldiers of India and China in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh. The time has come for the government to leave its wavering attitude and explain to China in a stern tone that its act will not be tolerated," Congress's official Twitter handle INC India stated.

In another tweet, Congress hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his earlier comments related to the LAC standoff between India and China in Ladakh.

Referring to PM Modi's clarification pertaining to alleged Chinese intrusion, Congress said, "If this mistake had not been made. If China was not afraid of taking the name of China, today it would not have had the capacity to raise its eyes towards our country. Occupying our land, coming to our land and fighting with our soldiers is a distant thing. There's still time... don't be afraid!"

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal said, "Our youth are the pride of the country. I salute his bravery and pray to God for his speedy recovery."

The said incident reportedly took place on December 9 in the Yangtse area in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. Around 200 Chinese soldiers tried to transgress the LAC, but the Indian troops contested the PLA attempts in a "firm and resolute manner", officers said.

The Chinese military blamed the Indian troops for 'illegally' crossing the Line of Actual Control and “obstructing" Chinese border patrol troops leading to the stand-off between the two armies on December 9.

Beijing said on Tuesday that the situation was stable along the unresolved border with India, adding the two sides "maintained unobstructed dialogue on the border issue through diplomatic and military channels." Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force launched active combat patrols over Arunachal Pradesh after detecting "enhanced Chinese air activity", reports said. India's timely intervention shunned away PLA: Defence Minister Singh said that China attempted to "unilaterally change the status quo", against which Indian troops responded with a befitting reply. At least Indian six soldiers were injured in the clash and were brought to Guwahati for treatment, as per reports by the news agency PTI. The situation is 'stable': Chinese foreign ministry Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin did not comment on the reported clash from Tuesday. Beijing urged New Delhi to "earnestly implement the important consensus reached by both leaders, strictly abide by the spirit of the agreements and accords signed by both sides, together uphold the peace and tranquillity of the China-India border region." Indian parliamentarians had moved adjournment notices in both houses of the parliament on Tuesday. Our jawans fought in a resolute manner and a few of them have been injured too." The Congress party also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged the government to convey intolerance to Chinese infiltration attempts in a 'stern tone'. "There is news of a clash between the soldiers of India and China in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh. The time has come for the government to leave its wavering attitude and explain to China in a stern tone that its act will not be tolerated," Congress's official Twitter handle INC India stated.
