India’s former Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane in his memoir 'Four Stars of Destiny' has shed light on India’s border tensions with China throughout his tenure and how it took India and the Indian Army to make China realise that “enough is enough.”

The 28th CoAS recounted the nighttime skirmishes and ensuing tensions of the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which pushed the two Asian giants on the verge of a full-blown war.

The general writes that Chinese leader Xi Jinping won’t forget June 16 any time soon as China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) suffered heavy casualties for the first time in two decades at the hands of their Indian counterparts along the Himalayas.

"June 16 is (Chinese President) Xi Jinping's birthday. This is not a day he will forget any time soon. For the first time in over two decades, the Chinese and the PLA had suffered fatal casualties," Naravane writes.

Naravane’s tenure, from December 2019 to April 2022, was largely marked by increased Chinese hostility on the border and India’s rapid response to enhance its own capabilities along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de-facto border between India and Tibet.

What triggered the Galwan clashes?

According to Naravane, the clashes occurred after the PLA refused to vacate the Patrolling Point-14 (PP-14) position.

"At PP-14, however, whenever we asked the PLA to remove their tents, they kept changing their stance. From 'some more time was needed', to 'we will check with our superiors', to it 'being beyond the mandate of the talks'.”

He said that BSF is looking at the reasons for the sudden rise of ceasefire violations from across the border.

Before the onset of the winter season, the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir saw a lot of rise in infiltration bids as well. According to the BSF, there has been a rise in the last month in ceasefire violations as well as infiltration bids.

''They (Pakistan forces) have fired towards our posts 2-3 times. They have tried to target our soldiers, but our soldiers have always been alert and given a befitting reply. We have heard that the enemy has faced a lot of damage, although it's not verified yet. It's been happening for the last two weeks, and the reason for this rise in firing incidents is being looked at. Our soldier is critically injured and is being treated after the firing incident yesterday at the International Border. There are always attempts before the winter to send terrorists from across the border. We are alert,'' said Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) Nitin Agarwal.

Meanwhile, in an operation in South Kashmir's Shopian district, one terrorist was killed by the forces in an encounter. According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, the terrorist had recently joined the TRF and was killed in an encounter in the Kathohalan area of South Kashmir's Shopian.
Amid controversy over no guard of honour at the funeral of Agniveer Amritpal Singh in the Indian state of Punjab, the Indian Army said that the agniveer died by suicide. The army further admitted that there was "some misunderstanding and misrepresentation of facts" around his death.

The Indian government had announced the Agnipath scheme in 2022, in place of the earlier process of recruitment of soldiers into the armed forces. As per the scheme, the soldiers, who are called as Agniveers, are recruited for four years, after which they get an opportunity to join the regular cadre.

On Sunday (Oct 15), the Indian Army stated that Amritpal Singh shot himself to death while on sentry duty and that no guard of honour was extended to his funeral, as deaths due to such self-inflicted injuries are not given such honours.

The Army further stated that they do not differentiate between soldiers on the basis of whether they joined the force before or after the Agnipath scheme's implementation.

The Indian Army faced allegations of not extending military honours at the funeral of Singh, as he was an Agniveer soldier.

The Army's Nagrota-headquartered White Knight Corps said on Saturday (Oct 14) that he died because of a self-inflicted gunshot injury while he was on sentry duty in the Rajouri sector.

'Suicide cases not entitled to military funerals'

Later on Sunday night, the Army in a statement said, "It is a grave loss to the family and the Indian Army that Agniveer Amritpal Singh committed suicide by shooting himself while on sentry duty. In consonance with the existing practice, the mortal remains, after the conduct of medico-legal procedures, were transported under Army arrangements along with an escort party to his native place for the last rites."

"Unfortunate instances of death arising out of suicide/self-inflicted injury, irrespective of the type of entry, are accorded due respect by the Armed Forces along with deep and enduring empathy with the family. Such cases, however, are not entitled to military funerals as per the extant Army Order of 1967, in vogue. Policy on the subject has been consistently followed ever since, without any discrimination," it added.

"As per data held, there has been an average yearly loss ranging between 100-140 soldiers since 2001 where deaths occurred due to suicides/self-inflicted injuries, and a military funeral in such cases was not accorded," the Army stated.

It stated that they give due priority to entitled disbursement of financial assistance and relief, which includes immediate financial relief for carrying out funerals.

"Such unfortunate instances of loss bear heavy on the family and the Forces as a fraternity. During such times, it is important and incumbent on society to uphold the respect, privacy and dignity of the family while empathising with them in their moment of grief," the Army stated.

"Armed Forces are known for adherence to the policies and protocols and will continue to do so as hithertofore. The Indian Army requests support of all sections of society while it follows its established protocols," it added.

Taking to X, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said irrespective of the army policy, the policy of his government will remain the same for a martyr and it will give Rs 10 million (approximately $120,000) to the family of the soldier.

A six-year-old female labrador sacrificed her life to save the troops during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir. On Tuesday, a female canine named Kent, from the 21 Army Dog Unit, was guiding a group of soldiers on the course of terrorists who were trying to escape. She came under heavy fire during the operation and died at the scene, a defence spokesman in Jammu told Kashmir News Observer. The dog bravely took the bullets from AK series rifles and lost her life. She saved her handler during the search operation in Narla village in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. "Army dog Kent was at the forefront of 'Operation Sujaligala'. Kent was leading a column of soldiers on the trail of the fleeing terrorists. It came down under heavy hostile fire. While shielding its handler, it laid down its life in the best traditions of the Indian Army," a defence spokesperson said. Indian Army dog dies while protecting troops during operation in Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army in a joint operation eliminated a terrorist in the Reasi district. The forces have been continuing relentless operations in the jungle areas of the Reasi district and an operation was launched based on specific information about the presence of two armed terrorists.

According to the Indian Army, a counter-terrorism grid was established with extensive deployment in the jungle area of Reasi after zeroing in on the terrorists. The Indian Army and J&K police launched the Operation in the Kalaban area in the Reasi district on September 4 while the terrorists trapped inside the cordoned house opened fire on the security personnel deployed outside, which resulted in an encounter leading to the killing of one terrorist.

"A detailed search of the house and the surrounding areas after the encounter resulted in the recovery of one terrorist body along with other war-like stores including one AK series assault rifle with magazines. The search operation is in progress," said Lt Col Suneel Bartwal PRO (Defence).

Meanwhile, the Indian Army had successfully demolished an IED in the same region on September 3. A major incident has been averted in the region by these two consecutive actions by security forces. The presence of these heavily armed terrorists in the hinterland indicates sustained attempts by inimical forces to destabilise the region.

The Indian Army along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police continue to search the jungle areas of Reasi as they have inputs of more terrorists hiding in the area.
