For coastal India, which has high humidity, the heat wave threshold is 37 Degrees, while the deviation criteria remain the same as above. For hilly areas, a heat wave is declared when temperatures reach 30 Degrees Celsius with an above-normal variation of 4.5 Degrees to 6.4 Degrees Celsius. Heat waves and red or yellow alerts are declared by the IMD when the above-normal temperatures are recorded for two consecutive days at a specific location. IMD also takes into account regional climate variations. This is because what constitutes extreme heat in coastal cities is different from a dry region like Rajasthan. With these criteria, the IMD can issue warnings, alerting the public to take health measures and governments to mitigate the impact. In India, heat waves usually run between the months of April and June. Some heat waves can be deadly, with several deaths reported every year, with the casualties are often found among low-income communities in urban and poor areas. How to be safe during a heat wave Here are some ways to minimise heat exposure and maintain hydration during heat waves: Stay hydrated: Even if you are not thirsty, drink a lot of water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle with you. At the same time, avoid sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol, as they can cause more dehydration. If you are sweating too much, try drinking electrolyte-rich fluids like oral rehydration solutions. Presently classified as a 'Well marked Low-Pressure Area,' the weather system is expected to move north-northwestwards towards North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh Coasts by Thursday, said the IMD. In meteorology, a 'Low Pressure Area' is associated with stormy weather, gusty winds, rough sea conditions, and rainfall. Rains are expected to continue in Chennai and adjoining districts on Thursday, 19th December as well.
Due to the impact of the weather system, a warning has been issued advising fishermen against venturing along the Tamil Nadu coast, and parts of South Andhra Pradesh coast where winds could be gusting at speeds up to 55kmph. The warning for fishermen is applicable until Saturday, 22nd December.

The month of November 2024 recorded the second warmest for the country and warmest for northwest India in 123 years, since 1901, said IMD. The above-normal average temperatures were attributed to the lack of western disturbances.&nbsp;

India also observed its warmest October since 1901 with record high night and mean temperatures after witnessing similar trends in July, August, and September.

The Indian Met Department has predicted above-normal minimum temperatures over most parts of the country for the month of December.

The Northwest and central parts are expected to witness above-normal minimum temperatures during the first half of the month as they received below-normal rainfall this monsoon.

Above-normal maximum temperatures are also likely over northeast and east central India and some regions of northwest and Peninsular India. On the other hand, the weather department predicts below-normal temperatures over west-central and nearby regions of northwest and north peninsular India.

The IMD has predicted above-normal rainfall over South Peninsular India this month.

Indian MET department predicts a warm November following record-high temperatures in October

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a harsh winter for India. As La Niña conditions are expected to arrive by October-November, northwest and central India is likely to witness severe cold waves during the season.

La Niña is the cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific that brings more rainfall to the Indian subcontinent.

While the southwest monsoon rains ended on Monday (Sep 30) with a surplus of eight&nbsp;per cent during the months from June to September, a delayed withdrawal is expected to be over by mid-October, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

“Rainfall activity is increasing in the week commencing from 17 October. If that goes right, we can expect that northeastern monsoon will set in over the southeastern peninsula by 17 October,” Mohapatra said during a press conference regarding monsoon and October weather outlook.&nbsp;

Although there is a delay in monsoon withdrawal, the official date remains unchanged for the country. “We are expecting that there will be withdrawal in the next one-week from northeastern India and then central India gradually. From the entire country, we will keep monitoring and be updating you on a weekly and daily basis,” said the IMD chief.

Usually, monsoon withdrawal begins on September 17 and exits by October 15. However, this year’s withdrawal is delayed due to a low-pressure system prevalent in northwest India.

This year’s rainfall was recorded above normal due to six depressions and 14 low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal. The country’s weather was also affected by the cyclonic storm ‘Asna’ in the Arabian Sea, which was only the third cyclonic storm to form over the Arabian Sea in August since 1891.

"There is a 71% chance that La Niña conditions will develop during October-November," said Mohapatra. This will likely result in colder than usual winter temperatures in northern India, including Delhi-NCR.

“La Nina condition is still weak and how much it will strengthen in January or February, that we have to monitor,” the IMD chief&nbsp;added. However, the severity of cold wave conditions will be revealed in November’s forecast.

While the Indian weather agency&nbsp;has predicted above-normal temperatures, the country is likely to witness more than usual rainfall in October.

According to IMD, several states are expected to witness rainfall activity until July 15. Heavy rains are expected over Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Light rains are expected in Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and central parts of the country.

A yellow alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh for July 11 and 12 as IMD forecasts lightning, thunderstorms, and strong winds, while sporadic rains are to continue till July 15.

IMD issues yellow and orange alerts as heavy monsoon rains lash several parts of India

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert in Delhi for May 30 (Thursday) as temperatures are expected to come down. Notably, on Wednesday (May 29), the mercury touched the 52 degrees Celsius mark, breaking previous records.

The head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, Kuldeep Srivastava told ANI the Met department has issued an orange alert for Thursday as temperatures are expected to dip owing to western disturbances. Thunderstorms and light rains are also on the cards for Delhi and the NCR on Thursday.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to be 45°C which is 2-3 degrees less than the red alert that was issued on Wednesday when temperatures crossed the 45°C threshold.

Scattered rain showers were also reported from parts of Delhi.

While an Orange Alert is also considered quite high, the news of a dip in temperatures itself comes as a relief for Delhiites.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a labourer from Bihar became the first person to succumb to the heatwave in Delhi. The 40-year-old died at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Wednesday after being admitted to the hospital on Monday night following a heatstroke.&nbsp;

Authorities said that the man lived in a room without a fan or cooler and his body temperature crossed the 107 degrees Celsius mark.

India's raging summer temperatures are expected to come down by the end of this month but will rise again for a few days during the beginning of June, the meteorological department said on Monday (May 27). The relief is that the southwest monsoon is progressing normally and the conditions are suitable for its onset along the Kerala coast in the next five days.&nbsp;

But all is not well as far as the forecast of raging temperatures is concerned. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of above-normal heatwave days over north and northwest India in June.&nbsp;

"Against a normal of three days, heatwave spells lasting 3 to 6 days is likely next month," Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.&nbsp;

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

It means that the heatwaves would affect Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, warm and humid nights will persist&nbsp;in these states.

The normal date for&nbsp;monsoon onset over Kerala is June 1.&nbsp;

Monsoon had already advanced over India's Andaman Sea on May 19.&nbsp;

"Monsoon advancement over the southern peninsular India this year is likely to be normal,” the IMD chief said.

The Met Department maintained that the country’s seasonal rainfall this year will be 106 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) which is 880.6mm (as per 1971 – 2020 data).

As the scorching heat engulfs the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioned that Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana will experience a heatwave from May 18 to May 20.&nbsp;

As per IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature surpasses 40°C in the plains; 37°C in coastal regions and 30°C in hilly regions, even as the deviation from normal is between 4.5°C and 6.4°C above the average maximum.

This will be followed by other parts of northern India and Bihar experiencing similar conditions over the next five days, the weather forecasting agency added.&nbsp;

At the same time, temperatures in other parts including northwest India and Gujarat will go up to two to three degrees. This increase in heat is because of weakening western disturbances which is a weather pattern responsible for keeping the temperature down.

“There is no immediate chance of rain. There is also a subsidence of hot air, which is heating the surface due to an anticyclone over northwest India. Soon, there will be an advection of hot air towards UP and Bihar also. Conditions will remain very hot for the next seven days,” said M Mohapatra, director general of IMD.

Advection is the transfer of heat through the horizontal movement of air which is more significant than the vertical movement. In the middle latitudes, day-to-day variation in weather is caused by advection only.

This comes with the increased peril of heat-related illnesses because of prolonged exposure to the sun. Moreover, people doing heavy work or having high health concerns are also said to be cautious of it.

"Forecasts indicate that western India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat from May 18-20, 2024. The event will include unusually warm nighttime temperatures, which can intensify the risk of heat-related illness and death," the Climate Central group said in an analysis.

Human-caused climate change made these conditions much more likely,&nbsp; Climate Central said.&nbsp;

“There is an anticyclone over West Rajasthan and Pakistan, causing the incursion of hot air from Balochistan and Thar desert. Heatwaves have started in parts of Rajasthan and some parts of Delhi also met the heatwave criteria on Wednesday. The area impacted by heatwaves will increase,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, of climate and meteorology at Skymet Weather.

Contrary to this, the weather in south of India has been better with instances of rain across peninsular India.

This is due to the cyclonic circulation over Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and the adjoining southern fringes of the state.

This circulation outlined the likelihood of widespread light to moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep and south Karnataka over the next seven days.

IMD also cautioned regarding flooding across Tamil Nadu.
