MS Dhoni is legend of the game, we always back him, says Indian skipper Virat Kohli

West Indies have a bright future despite the team's elimination from the Cricket World Cup on Thursday, fast bowler Kemar Roach said after India snuffed out their slim chances of making the semi-finals.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-34-west-indies-vs-india-230819">comprehensive 125-run defeat at Old Trafford</a> was West Indies' fifth loss in seven matches as the winners of the first two World Cups joined Afghanistan and South Africa on the sidelines.

Roach said players like batsman Shimron Hetmyer and quick bowler Oshane Thomas gave him hope.

"Yeah, I think we have a bright future," Roach, who claimed 3-36 to help restrict India to 268-7, told reporters.

"We have some quality players around. Hetmyer and Oshane, the younger guys, once they get some good guidance, they'll do well for West Indies.&nbsp;

"I've confidence in the guys. I'll always be a fan of West Indies cricket for sure. And there's no doubt about it.

"There are a couple of guys back home doing well as well. So hopefully we'll see these guys filter into the West Indies team in the probably near future."

West Indies began their campaign by beating 1992 champions Pakistan but did not taste another victory and narrowly went down to Australia and New Zealand.

"After the first win against Pakistan, the guys were confident going forward into the World Cup," said Roach, who became the first West Indian to take a World Cup hat-trick in 2011 against the Netherlands.

"I think a couple of close games against Australia and then New Zealand...I think it's tough because you want to get over the line, obviously, and get some confidence going forward but it didn't work out for us.

"But I think the guys, keeping our heads up. We're out now, but obviously there's a future for us.

"We're still learning, couple of young guys on the team got a great future for them. And it's all about being positive and looking forward."

Windies pacer Kemar Roach struck to have Sharma caught behind off a delivery that pitched on a good length and jagged back sharply into the right-handed batsman.

The on-field umpire gave Sharma not out but the West Indies successfully reviewed the decision, with technology appearing to indicate a spike in sound as the ball squeezed through the gap between bat and pad.

World Cup: Rohit Sharma's 'controversial' dismissal raises question on third umpire's decision

India captain Virat Kohli and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah are set to be rested for the limited overs series against the West Indies, scheduled in the United States and the Caribbean, starting August 3.

Kohli and Bumrah will, however, be back for the two-Test series which is a part of the inaugural World Test Championship.&nbsp;

"Virat and Jasprit will certainly be rested for the three-match T20Is and three-match ODI series. Virat has been playing since start of Australia series and Bumrah's workload management is also paramount. They will join the team before the Test series," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

There could be a few others too who will be given rest during the series after a gruelling World Cup campaign, where India are all but assured of a semi-final berth with four wins in their kitty.&nbsp;

If India make it to the finals, then the key players will be playing till July 14 and it would be necessary to give the premier batsmen and some fast bowlers adequate rest.&nbsp;

In fact, the BCCI in consultation with the Cricket West Indies has chalked the itinerary in a manner that Test matches, which were earlier scheduled at the start of the series, will now be held after the T20s and the ODIs.&nbsp;

"With first Test in Antigua starting August 22, there would be enough time for the key members in the World Cup squad to get much-needed rest," he said.&nbsp;

It is expected that Kohli and Bumrah will join the squad before the three-day practice game in Antigua from August 17-19.&nbsp;

Since Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari will play A games in West Indies, by the time the seniors arrive, the warm-up game could be used judiciously, is what the selection committee feels.&nbsp;

The West Indies series will also mark a shift in focus for the outgoing selection panel, which will start the process of T20 team selection keeping in mind next year's World T20 in Australia.&nbsp;

Few like Krunal Pandya, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Chahar, Sanju Samson are going to be tried out in the T20 version.&nbsp;

In the three-match T20 series, the first two games will be played at Fort Lauderhill in Florida on August 3 and 4.

Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah set to be rested for West Indies limited overs leg

Opener Shikhar Dhawan smashed 92 as India completed a six-wicket Twenty20 international win on the last ball against West Indies on Sunday to sweep the three-match series.

Dhawan put on a crucial 130-run third wicket stand with Rishabh Pant, who hit 58, to bring India close to their target of 182 before West Indies hit back in Chennai.

Pant was out in the 19th over and Dhawan lost his wicket on the penultimate ball of the match, but Manish Pandey hit the winning run to deny West Indies any chance of a consolation victory. A tie would have taken the match into a super over.

The result caps off a complete domination by India, who had won the Tests 2-0 and then the one-day international series 3-1 against the visiting West Indians.

Nicholas Pooran stood out with the bat for West Indies in the final game of a tough tour, with a 25-ball 53 that guided the visitors to 181-3 after electing to bat first.

But the left-handed pair of Dhawan and Pant put the hosts' chase on track after they had lost two early wickets including their in-form skipper Rohit Sharma for four.

Speaking about their strategy for today, Brathwaite said, " This is a new stadium, first international game and we want to chase. Dew factor is also one of the reasons but it's more about the pitch. "

"We have one change in the team. Nicholas Pooran is in the team in place of Powell. He is a good player of spin and he is a left-hander so that will add balance to our team," he added.

Rohit Sharma is leading the side after skipper Virat Kohli was given rest for the series. &nbsp;
&nbsp;
Eyeing another series win, Rohit said, "First men's international match happening at this ground. There is grass on the pitch so I am guessing pitch will hold up. But I am not sure about the outfield as there is lot of dew expected around 7.30. As a group, we are determined to play good cricket and that's what is required."

"We have Bhuvi back in our team, in place of Umesh. Of course, it was not easy but Bhuvi has been our leading bowlers and he is very experienced too. He bowls well with the new ball and he is excellent in the death overs too."

"It is good to have Bhuvi back but it is unfortunate for Umesh to miss out only after 1 match, but team composition is very important," he concluded.

Skipper <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=rohit+sharma">Rohit Sharma</a> hoped they will learn from the mistakes which put India in a spot of the bother before crossing the line in the first T20 International against West Indies here Sunday.

Chasing 110, India were struggling at 45 for four in the eighth over when Dinesh Karthik took control of the proceedings at the Eden Gardens.

First in the company of KL Rahul and then debutant Krunal Pandya (21 of 9 balls), Karthik helped the hosts break a four-match winless run.

"(We) knew the chase wasn't going to be easy. Hopefully we can learn from these mistakes," Sharma said at the post-match presentation ceremony.&nbsp;

India prevailed over the visitors by <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/ind-vs-wi-1st-t20-india-beat-west-indies-by-five-wickets-175476">five wickets to take a 1-0 lead</a> in the three-match series.

"Exceptional performance with the ball. There was a lot on offer for the seamers. Even with spinners, it wasn't easy. Overall there was little bit for every department. To start with, we bowled well - good areas. Used the conditions perfectly," Sharma said.

Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/13) led the Indian bowlers' fine show to restrict West Indies to 109 for eight after the stand-in skipper opted to field.

For the Windies, skipper Carlos Brathwaite and Oshane Thomas picked up two wickets apiece in impressive spells.

"Oshane Thomas is a really exciting talent. If he bowls in good areas, it's not going to be easy for batsmen to counter it. The advantage of height gives him that extra edge. Wish him the best in the future but not against us," India said of the West Indian pacer.&nbsp;

Sharma also lavished praise on debutants Krunal and Khaleel Ahmed.

"Very exciting talents again - Krunal and Khaleel. Krunal - I've seen him closely in last two-three years for MI (Mumbai Indians). When he came into bowl, (Kieron) Pollard was batting. He was the one who wanted to bowl against him.&nbsp;

"These guys are ready to take those challenges. Exciting for the captain when you see that. If they continue to work on their skills, India's going to benefit for sure."

Brathwaite said they didn't apply themselves.

"We never got into second or third gear... Were either too defensive or too attacking. Can see the way Keemo (Paul) and (Fabian) Allen finished, if we had wickets in hand we would've got 130-140 which would've probably been a winning score."

It was at this ground that Brathwaite hit four sixes in an over to help WI win the World T20 two years ago.

On the promising Oshane Thomas, the captain said, "Don't know what the long-term plans will be from the selection panel. He's at the best place he could be. Hope he gets fitter, gets stronger. Continues to bowl rapid.&nbsp;

"For him, the world is at his feet. We will try to guide him as well as we can. Ultimately it's up to us, the Windies cricket system, to pull him along and create what would be another Joel Garner or Michael Holding."

Man of the Match Kuldeep said, "Sometimes wicket happens, sometimes it doesn't. But that's my aim. The first wicket (of Darren Bravo) was the one I cherished. It's the ball I'm working on (faster one). Just bowl it to contain runs as well."

At one point, the current World T20 champions were 28-3 inside five overs. India's bowling unit made the difference for the team by taking early wickets to build pressure on the guests. Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed, who made their T20I debut, got one wicket each. Pandya got the big-hitting Kieron Pollard out for 14 with his left-arm spin to celebrate his first international wicket. Fabien Allen hit a 20-ball 27 in his first T20 game for the West Indies before falling to another debutant Khaleel. While India's spin sensation Kuldeep Yadav, who returned impressive figures of 3-13, was the most economical bowler for his side with an impressive economy of 3.25. Innings Break! IND vs WI, 1st T20: India opt to bowl first against West Indies

India captain Virat Kohli has said Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues to play a key role in their limited-overs team despite the wicketkeeper-batsman <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-announce-indias-t20-squads-for-wi-and-australia-series-ms-dhoni-dropped-173727">being omitted for upcoming Twenty20 matches </a>against West Indies and Australia.&nbsp;

India's chief selector MSK Prasad said Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik had been drafted in for six T20s this month as the side look to identify a backup wicketkeeper to Dhoni.&nbsp;

While the decision to omit Dhoni raised questions about the long-serving wicketkeeper's future in the shortest format of the game, Prasad said the 37-year-old was merely being rested.&nbsp;

Kohli, speaking to reporters on Thursday after his side secured a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/5th-odi-rohit-kohli-chase-down-windies-total-in-145-overs-clinch-series-3-1-174897">3-1 victory over West Indies</a> in their five-match one-day international series, gave short shrift to questions regarding Dhoni's future.&nbsp;

"I think the selector has already addressed this if I'm not wrong," he said.&nbsp;

"And he's been spoken to firstly... So, I don't see any reason why I should be sitting here and explaining that. I think the selector has come out and explained exactly what happened.&nbsp;

"I think people are putting too much variables into this situation, which is not the case I can assure you of that," Kohli said.&nbsp;

By sitting out the T20s, Dhoni was giving an opportunity to younger players to get much-needed expereince, Kohli said.&nbsp;

"He's still a very integral part of this team and he just feels that in the T20 format, someone like Rishabh can get more chances," he added.

"It has got nothing to do with anything that other people are thinking and I, as captain, can certainly assure you of that."

Dhoni announced his sudden retirement from test cricket midway through an Australia series in 2014, with the Boxing Day match in Melbourne being the last of his 90 appearances in the longer format.

He has continued to compete in limited-overs internationals but local media have questioned whether he will be around for next year's one-day World Cup in England and Wales when Dhoni will be 38.

He remains supremely fit and his glove work is still of the highest quality but opinion is divided over whether age has diminished his batting.

Dhoni was once considered India's best finisher and no target was deemed out of reach with the boundary-hitting right-hander at the crease. He has scored 1,487 runs from 93 T20 internationals, at a strike-rate of over 127.

Pant, 21, has been making his mark with the bat and selectors could be planning ahead for not only next year's World Cup but the World Twenty20 the following year in Australia.

MS Dhoni 'very integral' part of team, says captain Virat Kohli

Ambati Rayudu's batting at number four and young Khaleel Ahmed's emergence as the third seamer were the two biggest gains from the ODI series against the West Indies, feel India skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri.

"Two areas I can think of are for third seamer - Khaleel has been outstanding. God forbid anything happens to Bhuvi or Bumrah, good to have Khaleel who can come in and take wickets. Rayudu has also taken responsibility at No.4. Those two areas we were looking at (prior to the series). And those two have been addressed," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Shastri on his part also seemed happy with the kind of pressure Rayudu absorbed, having made a comeback in the Indian team.

"I am pretty happy with Rayudu. It is never easy to make a comeback in the team after couple of years. Even though you have to express yourself, you hold back and that is understandable because couple of bad performances can lose you your place. He has handled the pressure really well and batted really well in the last match," the head coach said.

Shastri seemed impressed with left-arm seamer Khaleel but wants him to add a few more clicks.

"The left-arm fast bowlers can be very handy. Khaleel is raw, he doesn't have the experience but he has the variations and has the aggression too. Once he adds to his speed, he will be more than effective."

Shastri said the team is back on track after its sixth successive ODI series win at home.

"We are back on track. I thought we were below par in the field in the second and third ODI. Sometimes you need a wake-up call and we were at our best in the last two ODIs. This Windies team is a promising unit. They have some exceptional players who with exposure, I am sure will test some of the big sides," the coach felt.

Skipper Kohli too praised his bowlers for their clinical show in the last two games.&nbsp;

"Because of our clinical performance, we were able to finish the game in a few hours. Credit to the bowling unit for pitching it in the right areas. Was surprised that West

Indies chose to bat, we wanted to bowl first anyway."&nbsp;

West Indies captain Jason Holder rued the lack of consistency from his team.

"Not the finish we were looking for. Lacked consistency in the last couple of games. We didn't bat well. Credit to the guys, admirable performance against India in India.

Thought it would've been a good pitch. Their bowlers put the ball in the right areas but lot of our dismissals were poor shots, it wasn't about the pitch. We needed to show more application."&nbsp;

Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope were the two bright spots for the West Indies in the series.

"Even Oshane Thomas here, he showed he's got something. Just needs to work a little harder," added Holder.

IND vs WI: Jadeja takes four wickets to end Windies' innings for 104

West Indies skipper Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bat in the fifth and final one-day international against India here on Thursday.

Windies will be seeking revenge for the huge 224 runs loss in the 4th ODI. &nbsp;

Speaking after the toss, Holder said, " &nbsp;It looks a very good wicket and looks a bit dry as well. Hopefully we will get some runs on the board and our bowlers would go out there and defend it. We have made two changes. Ashley Nurse is out and Devendra Bishoo comes in and Chanderpaul Hemraj is out and Oshane Thomas comes in."

"He (Nurse) is ruled out for the entire tour. I wish him well. Hopefully, he can recover quickly for the next tour. I think it it is about consistency. We just need to be more consistent to beat the best teams. We have given glimpses of that in this series," he added.

"Our batters will have to put runs on the board and the bowlers will have back to them up and support them, the skipper concluded.&nbsp;

India, on the other hand, are unchanged for the match. Speaking about their strategy for today, skipper Virat Kohli said, " We would have bowled first as well. I don't think the wicket will change much but the dew is going to be a massive factor in the second innings. It has been overcast for the last few days and there would be something in the wicket for the few overs."

"If it is too damp or too dry, the spinners will also come into play and there will be some spin. We are playing with the same team," Kohli concluded.

India are currently leading the series 2-1, after the third match ended in a tie.&nbsp;
Teams:&nbsp;
India: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, M S Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, Jasprit Bumrah.

5th ODI: West Indies win toss, elect to bat against India

Following a huge 224-run victory in the fourth ODI against the West Indies, India will aim to seal the last match of the five-match series with a win in Thiruvananthapuram.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The Virat Kohli and Co, who are leading 2-1 in the five-match series that also witnessed a tie, will look to register their eighth straight series win over the Windies in a bilateral ODI series.

For India, top-order batsmen Rohit Sharma, skipper Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu are in red-hot form. While Kohli smashed three consecutive centuries, Rohit slammed his second and Rayudu registered his 3rd ODI hundred during the ongoing five-ODI match series. &nbsp;

With scores of 140, 157 not out and 107 in the first three games, Kohli became the first Indian to score three consecutive hundreds in the 50-over format.

Meanwhile, Jason Holder's men will look to seek inspiration from their illustrious predecessors and level the series.

5th ODI: India eyes eighth straight ODI series win against Windies

India's left-arm speedster Khaleel Ahmed, who played a vital role yesterday in India's victory over West Indies in the 4th ODI, on Tuesday received an official warning and a demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

The incident took place in the 14th over, when Khaleel, after having Samuels caught in the slips by Rohit Sharma, advanced aggressively towards the departing batsman, which, in the view of the on-field umpires, could have provoked a reaction from the Windies player.

"India's Khaleel Ahmed received an official warning and one demerit point for advancing aggressively towards Marlon Samuels after dismissing the batsman during the fourth one-day international between India and the Windies on Monday," the ICC said in a statement.

"The India fast bowler, who returned figures of 3/13, was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the Code, which relates to 'using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match," it added.

After the match, Khaleel admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee.&nbsp;

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

IND vs WI: Khaleel Ahmed reprimanded, handed one demerit point for provocative action

Khaleel Ahmed, a 20-year-old left-arm pacer who has earned praise from the likes of Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid, scalped three crucial wickets to power India to 224-run victory over West Indies in the 4th ODI on Monday.&nbsp;

Windies star batsman Shimron Hetmyer, Marlon Samuels and Rovman Powell were the wickets he clinched in the five overs he bowled, giving just 13 runs, bringing the economy to 2.60, something which cannot be ignored. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The out and out fast bowler had played in the Quadrangular trophy for India A where he picked up seven wickets in four matches, including 3/45 against South Africa A in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

Prior to that, Khaleel played five List-A matches for India A in England and impressed with eight wickets.

Son of a compounder, Khaleel hails from the small town of Tonk in Rajasthan.&nbsp;

With 12 wickets in three innings, including 3/29 against Sri Lanka in the final of the Tri-Nation Under-19s tournament in Colombo, he broke into India’s Under-19 World Cup squad in 2016.&nbsp;

It was the same year where he was picked up by the IPL franchise Delhi, where his association began with the then coach of the franchise Rahul Dravid.&nbsp;

In two years, Khaleel’s development has impressed Dravid to an extent that he feels the left-arm pacer can be part of India’s bench-strength and a potential candidate for the World Cup in England next year.

Khaleel actually came into light after he was bought for a whopping amount of Rs 3 crore by another IPL franchise Hyderabad on the first day of Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions.

He moved to Hyderabad this year but played just one match and went wicketless.

Ahmed's father used to hate cricket and even tried to dissuade him from playing, however, his then coach Imtiyaz Khan, played a big part in convincing Khaleel's father to let him continue playing.&nbsp;

Within a short span, Khaleel has earned him a place for himself but it will be his consistency that will earn him the chance to bowl in 2019 World Cup.&nbsp;

Khaleel actually came into light after he was bought for a whopping amount of Rs 3 crore by another IPL franchise Hyderabad on the first day of Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions. He moved to Hyderabad this year but played just one match and went wicketless. Ahmed's father used to hate cricket and even tried to dissuade him from playing, however, his then coach Imtiyaz Khan, played a big part in convincing Khaleel's father to let him continue playing. Within a short span, Khaleel has earned him a place for himself but it will be his consistency that will earn him the chance to bowl in 2019 World Cup.

Khaleel Ahmed: India's left-handed seamer in contention for 2019 World Cup

India thrashed the West Indies by huge 224 runs in the fourth ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series here on Monday.

Chasing 378 for victory, the tourists were bowled out for 153 runs. The visitors never really had a shot at chasing down this total after they kept losing wickets right from the start.

Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu's brilliant centuries, supported by a disciplined bowling spell by young paceman Khaleel Ahmed and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, both taking three wickets each, helped to conclude Windies' batting in just 36.2 overs.&nbsp;

Skipper Jason Holder top-scored for the visitors with his unbeaten 54-run knock.

Earlier, centuries from opener Rohit and Rayudu had powered India to a mammoth 377 runs.&nbsp;

While Rohit compensated for his failure in the third ODI by belting another top-notch hundred, the 21st of his career and the second of the series, Rayudu, the newly-anointed No.4 stamped his authority by slamming his 3rd ODI century.&nbsp;

India had won the Guwahati ODI, tied the Vizag match and lost the Pune contest.&nbsp; The final match will be played Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.&nbsp;

Nurse also talked about Pune's wicket.

"It's just good to see the boys play consistent cricket and giving India a run for their money," he said.
