BRICS 2026: Modi, Putin & Xi Meet in New Delhi | Is a New Global Power Shift Coming

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected return to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit 2026 comes at a particularly sensitive moment for India’s relationship with Moscow, and for its increasingly complicated economic relationship with Washington. Putin was last in India in December 2025 for the annual India-Russia summit. His expected appearance at the September BRICS gathering would therefore put the Russian president in Delhi for a second time in less than a year, underlining the continuing importance of the India-Russia relationship even as New Delhi simultaneously manages its ties with the United States and other Western powers. Russia’s Ambassador to India Denis Alipov said on Friday that Putin is expected to attend the summit. But beyond the optics of another Modi-Putin meeting, one issue will inevitably hang over the summit: Russian oil. India’s dependence on Russian crude has grown dramatically since the Ukraine war. In July 2026, Russian crude accounted for a record 50.83% of India’s total oil imports, or about 2.47 million barrels per day, according to trade data cited by news agency Reuters. That makes the oil question far more complicated than a simple diplomatic choice between Washington and Moscow.
The 50% tariff episode, and what changed
The Trump administration had imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports in August 2025 specifically over India’s purchases of Russian oil. Combined with the existing reciprocal tariff, the total reached 50%. The White House said the additional duty was intended to pressure countries purchasing Russian oil. But that is not the current tariff structure. In February 2026, Washington removed the additional 25% Russia-oil tariff after saying India had committed to stop directly or indirectly importing Russian oil. The US also lowered its reciprocal tariff on Indian goods to 18%. Crucially, however, the February executive order contains a warning: if India resumes direct or indirect purchases of Russian oil, US officials can recommend bringing back the additional 25% tariff. And India's subsequent oil-import numbers make that provision highly relevant.
Why India cannot simply walk away from Russian crude
India is the world's third-largest oil consumer and relies heavily on imports to meet its energy requirements. Russian crude became particularly attractive after Western sanctions and price restrictions disrupted Moscow's traditional markets. For Indian refiners, Russian crude has not simply been a geopolitical purchase. Price, availability, refinery economics and supply security have all mattered. The scale of the trade illustrates the problem. India's imports from Russia have become heavily concentrated in energy: crude oil alone accounted for $35.76 billion of imports in FY2025-26 through November, according to IBEF data. Fertilisers were another major category at $2.11 billion. And crude is not the only Russian commodity India has reasons to keep buying.
What India buys from Russia
Crude oil: By far the biggest component. Russian supplies have become crucial to Indian refiners, and July's record share shows how difficult it is to immediately replace those volumes. Fertilisers: Russia remains an important source of fertilisers for India's agriculture sector. Any disruption has implications beyond foreign policy, potentially affecting input costs and food security. Defence equipment: Russia has historically been India's biggest defence supplier, although India's dependence has declined as New Delhi has diversified its procurement. The relationship nevertheless includes decades of equipment, spares, maintenance and technology links. Diamonds, metals and other commodities: India also imports diamonds, iron and steel, vegetable oils and several other commodities from Russia, although their strategic significance is generally much smaller than oil, fertilisers and defence. Also Read: 'Europe has become an old continent': Belgian PM warns US, China are surpassing Europe
What India can reduce, and what it cannot easily replace
This is where the Russian oil debate becomes more nuanced. India can diversify its crude purchases. It already buys from suppliers in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. It can also adjust refinery configurations and procurement patterns depending on prices, sanctions and shipping costs. But replacing Russian oil overnight is another matter. The challenge is not simply finding another barrel. India needs barrels that are economically viable, available in sufficient volumes and compatible with its refinery system. Removing one of its largest sources could raise procurement costs and put pressure on refiners and consumers. The same logic applies, in a different way, to fertilisers and defence sustainment. India can diversify suppliers over time. But diversification is not the same as immediate substitution.
Why Putin’s BRICS visit matters?
This makes Putin’s expected Delhi visit particularly significant. India's BRICS presidency comes at a time when the grouping is discussing energy security, economic cooperation, local-currency trade and reducing vulnerabilities created by global financial and supply-chain disruptions. Russia, meanwhile, has a strong interest in preserving access to major markets such as India. For Moscow, India is not merely a diplomatic partner. It is a major energy customer and an increasingly important economic relationship. For New Delhi, Russia remains one pillar of a broader strategic-autonomy strategy: maintaining ties with Moscow while simultaneously engaging Washington, Europe, the Gulf, Japan and other partners. That does not mean India is choosing Russia over the US. It means India is trying to avoid being forced to choose.
The bigger India-US question
The oil issue therefore puts the Modi government in a delicate position. Washington has already demonstrated that Russian energy purchases can become a trade issue. The February 2026 executive order removed the additional 25% tariff but explicitly kept the door open to bringing it back if Russian oil imports resume. At the same time, India's latest import data suggest that Russian crude remains extremely difficult to displace. With Russian oil reaching more than half of India's imports in July, the economic relationship has moved far beyond the limited purchases that existed before the Ukraine war. That is why the Putin-Modi meeting on the sidelines of BRICS Summit 2026 will carry significance beyond the usual India-Russia agenda. The discussion is likely to encompass energy security, fertilisers, defence, trade imbalances and payment mechanisms. But underneath all of it will be one fundamental question: How much Russian oil can India continue buying without reopening the tariff confrontation with Washington, and how much Russian oil can India realistically afford to stop buying? For Moscow, the answer is strategically important. For Washington, it is a test of economic pressure. And for New Delhi, it is ultimately a question of energy security, economic interests and strategic autonomy.

Russia moots rail link to India as Strait of Hormuz disruptions threaten trade

India is exploring the possibility of importing natural gas from Russia as New Delhi looks to widen its energy options and build greater resilience against global supply disruptions. This comes as recent disruptions in West Asia have exposed how vulnerable energy flows can become when critical routes are affected. India says it is responding by diversifying suppliers and routes. In that context, Russian gas could offer another source of supply. But there is a larger question: does adding Russia to India's gas basket make the country more energy secure, or does it simply replace one geopolitical risk with another?
The case for Russian gas
India's natural gas consumption is already substantial. The government says the country consumes about 189 MMSCMD of natural gas, while 97.5 MMSCMD is produced domestically. During the recent West Asia disruption, around 47.4 MMSCMD of supply was affected, forcing companies to look for alternative suppliers and routes. That is where another major supplier like Russia could matter. Moscow has significant gas resources and has indicated potential for LNG exports to India. A Russian supply arrangement could therefore give Indian buyers another option as domestic gas demand grows. There is also a broader infrastructure push underway. The government is trying to expand pipeline networks, city gas distribution and PNG connectivity, while positioning natural gas as a transition fuel for cooking, transport and industry. So the logic is straightforward: more gas sources + more infrastructure = greater room to manoeuvre during a supply shock.
Could it actually make gas cheaper?
Potentially, but this is where the fine print matters. Adding Russian gas could increase competition among suppliers and give Indian buyers greater bargaining power. If the gas arrives at a competitive price, industries that rely heavily on natural gas could benefit. That could include fertiliser producers, manufacturers, CNG operators and city gas networks. But a Russian deal would not automatically mean cheaper gas for Indian consumers. The final price would depend on the contract, LNG prices, transportation costs, shipping and insurance, as well as the route used to bring the gas to India. In other words, Russian gas could improve India's negotiating position, but cheaper CNG or PNG is not guaranteed.
The West Asia crisis is the bigger lesson
The recent disruption has shown why India is so focused on diversification. The government says India now sources crude from around 40 countries, with about 70 per cent of crude imports arriving through routes outside the Strait of Hormuz, compared with around 55 per cent earlier.Natural gas has faced its own disruption. India has already turned to alternative suppliers and routes and secured LNG cargoes from new sources. The government has also prioritised supplies to sectors such as domestic PNG and CNG, while reducing allocations to some industrial users. That experience strengthens the argument for having more than one major source of gas.
Buying from Russia comes with its own risks
This is where India's energy strategy gets complicated. Greater reliance on Russian energy could expose Indian buyers to sanctions and other geopolitical restrictions imposed by Western countries. On Friday (Aug 7), the US Senate passed a bipartisan bill that could hit countries buying Russian oil and gas with tariffs of up to 100%, putting major buyers such as India and China in the spotlight. The legislation, passed 86-11, has been renamed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 in honour of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. It now heads to the US House of Representatives, which reconvenes on August 31.There is another risk too: overdependence. India's objective is diversification. Becoming heavily dependent on Russia would undermine that very strategy.

Amid fears of prolonged disruptions to Middle Eastern oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG), Russia has offered to continue its energy supply to India. Diplomatic sources say, "Russia ready to full fill India's energy demands in case of continued disruption on energy supplies due to the West Asia crisis." But that comes with Trump's threats. Tariffs were imposed on India last year for importing Russian energy. In early 2026, Trump announced a trade deal framework slashing tariffs on Indian imports from 50% to 18%, contingent on India halting or significantly reducing Russian oil purchases and shifting toward US energy sources. A US Supreme Court ruling striking down elements of Trump's tariff authority has left the deal in limbo, easing constraints on resuming Russian supplies. Meanwhile, India is undertaking up contingency measures to safeguard its economic security as escalating conflict in West Asia disrupts vital supply routes. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern over the intensification of the crisis, which has seen attacks on merchant shipping in the region. "Our trade and energy supply chains also traverse this geography. Any major disruption has serious consequences for the Indian economy," the MEA said. "As a country whose nationals are prominent in the global workforce, India is also firmly opposed to attacks on merchant shipping. Already, some Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing as a result of such attacks in the last few days." The conflict, involving strikes in the Gulf region and threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for roughly half of India's crude imports, has prompted swift domestic action. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a key meeting in Delhi, leading to emergency trade support measures. These include export flexibilities and the formation of an inter-ministerial group to monitor supply chains, aimed at mitigating the economic fallout from the West Asia war.

Meanwhile, India is undertaking up contingency measures to safeguard its economic security as escalating conflict in West Asia disrupts vital supply routes

Why more Russians could be visiting India soon, in groups?

At the India-Russia Business Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasised the importance of strengthening the multi-dimensional economic ties between Russia and India. He said, “I pay particular attention to deepen multi-faceted economic ties between Russia and India. Following today's meetings, we adopted a document to develop India-Russia economic cooperation. Russian businesses are ready to increase purchases from India across a wide range of goods and services. I want to assure the businesses that Russia will support all initiatives.” He also noted the longstanding trade partnership between the two countries, highlighting that, “Indeed, Russia and India are long-time trade partners. Trade volumes are growing at a sustainable pace. And over the past three years, we saw a record increase of up to 80%. As a result, last year, the Russian-Indian trade volume reached $64 billion. There are vast opportunities for further increase of bilateral trade and investment. Russia and India have big consumer markets. Once again, I would like to stress that under the leadership of His Excellency Modi, India is conducting an absolutely independent and sovereign policy and at the same time achieves very good results in the economic field,” he added. In his speech, Putin also praised India’s economic progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, "I would like to stress that under the leadership of PM Modi, India is conducting an independent and sovereign policy and at the same time achieving very good results. This will reduce transit times, lower costs, and open up new markets for businesses. With the power of digital technology, we can connect customs, logistics, and regulatory systems through virtual trade corridors. This will speed up customs clearance, reduce paperwork, and make cargo movement more seamless." Modi also outlined the ambitious target for bilateral trade, setting a goal of surpassing $100 billion by 2030. However, based on the ongoing momentum and the potential he sees, he expressed confidence that the target might be achieved ahead of schedule. “President Putin and I set a goal of exceeding the $100 billion target for bilateral trade by 2030. But from my conversations with President Putin since yesterday, and the potential we see, I don't think we'll have to wait until 2030. We are moving forward with determination to achieve that goal ahead of schedule, and my confidence is growing. Tariff and non-tariff barriers are being reduced. The speed and scale of change we have achieved in India over the past 11 years is unprecedented. Following the principle of reform, perform, and transform, India is rapidly moving towards becoming the world's third-largest economy. Our resolve is stronger than ever, and we are moving forward with great confidence and at a rapid pace towards our goals. Next-generation reforms in GST and reduction in compliance are steps taken to promote ease of doing business.”

Putin India visit: From defence to energy to fuel supplies, here are all the deals India-Russia have signed. See details

Coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin's State visit to India on Thursday (December 4), Russian nuclear power agency Rosatom has announced that it has commenced delivery of nuclear fuel for the upcoming Unit 3 of India's Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu. The Indo-Russian KKNPP is India's largest Nuclear power generation facility. Of the KKNPP's six VVER-1000 reactors, units 1 and 2 were connected to India’s national power grid in 2013 and 2016 respectively, and currently supply electricity to the southern regions of the country. Unit 3 is in the pre-commissioning phase, and Units 4,5,6 are in various stages of construction. Each of these reactors are capable of generating 1000Megawatts of power. When fully operational, KKNPP would generate about 6,000Megawatts of power. At present, KKNPP generates 2,000Megawatts, which is about one-fourth of India's total Nuclear power generating capacity. In November 2025, Rosatom had announced that preparations are underway for one of the key milestones- testing of safety systems on an open reactor at Unit 3 of KKNPP. The Nuclear Fuel Division of Rosatom has delivered the first consignment of nuclear fuel for the initial loading of the VVER-1000 reactor at Unit 3 of the KKNPP. The cargo flight successfully delivered fuel assemblies manufactured by the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (an enterprise of the Rosatom’s Nuclear Fuel Division), Rosatom said. A total of seven flights from Russia to India are planned to supply the entire reactor core and some reserve fuel. The shipments are provided under the contract signed in 2024, which includes fuel supply for units 3 and 4 of the KKNPP for the entire service life of the reactors.
Kudankulam unit 3 to use longer-lasting nuclear fuel
According to Rosatom, during the operation of Units 1 & 2 of the KKNPP, Russian and Indian engineers have worked towards increasing the reactors' efficiency through the introduction of advanced nuclear fuel and extended fuel cycles. Starting from 2022, the KKNPP is supplied with nuclear fuel of the TVS-2M model. It provides more reliable and cost-effective reactor operation due to its rigid design, a new generation anti-debris filter and a increased mass of uranium. Its introduction has also enabled elongation of the fuel cycle of the reactors from 12 to 18 months, so the power units are being stopped less frequently for fuel re-load. Earlier, the reactors had to be refuelled every year, but now they need to be refuelled only once in 18 months, offer increased runtime after every refuelling. The upcoming Units 3 & 4 of the KKNPP will become the first-ever VVER-1000 type reactors commence operations in an 18-month fuel cycle. This is the result of successful cooperation in recent years between Rosatom's Nuclear Fuel Division and Indian partners, as the efficient solutions that had been previously implemented at similar power plants in Russia and China were introduced at the two operational Kudankulam power units. Throughout the entire operational life of nuclear power plants, Rosatom not only supplies nuclear fuel, but also provides engineering services, increasing the efficiency of power units introducing new fuel and fuel cycle solutions.

Russia starts delivering nuclear fuel for India's Kudankulam unit 3

Coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin's State visit to India on Thursday (December 4), Russian nuclear power agency Rosatom has announced that it has commenced delivery of nuclear fuel for the upcoming Unit 3 of India's Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu. This MoU marks India's first foray into full-scale civilian aircraft manufacturing in decades. The agreement, inked in Moscow, grants Hindustan Aeronautics the rights to assemble the Sukhoi Superjet 100, or SJ-100, a twin-engine regional jet suited for short-haul routes. The move is seen as a pivotal step toward self-reliance in civil aviation, potentially injecting competition into a market long monopolized by American and European manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. The SJ-100, which has already seen more than 200 units produced and operated by over a dozen airlines worldwide, is poised to bolster India's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, which subsidises flights to underserved areas. Also read | ‘First fruit’ of Modi-Xi diplomacy: India-China direct flights resume after five years of suspension. Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier remark that “this is not an era of war”, the ministry reaffirmed that India supports the summit and is ready to assist efforts towards ending the conflict. Zelensky rejects territorial swap idea However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that any deal struck without Kyiv’s participation will not lead to real peace. He stressed that Ukraine’s borders are “non-negotiable” and no land would be surrendered to Russia. “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” Zelensky wrote on social media, adding, “Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing. The war cannot be ended without us, without Ukraine.” Calls for united action from allies Zelensky has urged Ukraine’s partners to take “clear steps” towards achieving lasting peace. In a phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he stressed the need for maximum coordination among allies. National security advisers from Ukraine’s partners, including the US, EU nations, and the UK, met in Britain on Saturday to align their positions before the Trump-Putin talks. Following a separate conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelensky cautioned, “It is truly important that the Russians do not succeed in deceiving anyone again.”

Despite recent US tariffs, India welcomed the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, viewing it as a potential step toward ending the Ukraine war and reaffirming its support for peaceful resolution efforts.

Ukraine has formally raised concerns with the Indian government and the European Union over electronic components manufactured or assembled in India being found in Iranian-designed drones used by Russian forces, suggest reports citing people familiar with the matter. Ukrainian authorities have reportedly sent at least two diplomatic notes to India's external affairs ministry since last year, after Indian-origin parts were identified in Shahed-136 unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). The issue reportedly was also flagged during EU sanctions envoy David O'Sullivan's visit to New Delhi in July, where he briefed Indian officials on the EU's latest sanctions package targeting Russian energy interests.Previously, in a post on Telegram and Facebook on 7 April, 2025, Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) said, “For the first time, a component made in India — a clock buffer from Aura Semiconductor — was found in a Russian weapon.”

What did the Indian government say on the issue?
The GOI is yet to issue a formal statement on the issue. Previously, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India's dual-use exports are governed by a "robust legal and regulatory framework". In a statement, he said that "India's exports of dual-use items are in keeping with its international obligations on non-proliferation, and based on its robust domestic legal and regulatory framework. Due diligence is conducted to ensure that such exports do not violate any of our laws".
‘Deeply disturbed’ by reports of Indian parts in Russian drones
As per a Hindustan Times report, documents show that a Ukrainian investigation found Indian-assembled or manufactured parts from Vishay Intertechnology and Aura Semiconductor inside the Shahed drones. These included a Vishay "bridge rectifier E300359" assembled in India and used in the drone's voltage regulator unit and an Aura Semiconductor "AU5426A" signal generator chip used in the drone's satellite navigation antenna. Both companies maintain they comply with all export regulations. In a statement issued in April, Aura Semiconductor, based in Bengaluru, said it was "deeply disturbed" by the possible diversion of its products to conflict zones. "We are deeply disturbed by the possibility that any of our components may have reached defence manufacturers through unauthorised third-party channels, in violation of our stated compliance framework and distribution agreements. We strongly oppose such activity and are committed to taking action wherever compliance gaps are identified," it said. You can find the full statement here.Kishore Ganti, co-founder of Aura Semiconductor Pvt Ltd said that the firm conducted a limit audit" but could not trace the end-user because it was a "plug and play" component. “The findings of the audit were inconclusive with respect to supply chain/end-user visibility of the Aura buffer product.”As per the report, after Ukraine raised the issue, security agencies have since visited electronics manufacturers in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to raise awareness about international restrictions related to dual-use items. Officials familiar with the issue said components may have reached Russia via third countries in West Asia after being legally exported from India. Ukraine’s defence intelligence agency has also flagged components from US and Chinese firms found in Russian military hardware.https://www.wionews.com/videos/ukraine-hundreds-of-russian-uavs-downed-by-drone-strikes-1754328535199/embed

US President Donald Trump's top aide Stephen Miller on Sunday (Aug 3) accused India of "financing" Russia's war in Ukraine by the nation's continued purchase of oil from Moscow. India may soon ink a massive multibillion-dollar deal with Russia to boost its air defence infrastructure. According to media reports, New Delhi is in advanced talks with Moscow to acquire 'Voronezh' series radars for $4 billion that can be deployed to monitor and detect aerial threats such as ballistic missiles, fighter jets, and ICBMs. Its 8,000-kilometre range would allow India to detect any air threat from anywhere in China, South and Central Asia, and most of the Indian Ocean region.

The advanced radars are manufactured by Russia's Almaz-Antey Corporation, a specialist of the production of anti-aircraft missile systems and radars. Moscow claims the Voronezh series radars made by the company can detect 500 objects at a time and can even track stealth fighter jets. Its massive range also allows it to get complete information about any incoming ICBMs as well as near-Earth objects in space.

Russian state media RT reported that talks between the two nations are in advanced stages, in the backdrop of the visit by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Russia.

Russia-Ukraine War: Russia Has A Deadly New Flying Bomb

India has raised with Kyiv the remarks made by President Volodymyr Zelensky during PM Modi's Russia visit. On July 9, Zelensky criticized PM Modi's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at his dacha, calling it a "devastating blow to peace efforts."

He stated, "It is disheartening to see the leader of the world's largest democracy embrace the world's most notorious criminal in Moscow". His comments came in the backdrop of the recent hospital attack in Ukraine in which children also died.

PM Modi was on a two-day visit to Russia from the 8th to the 9th of July for the 22nd India Annual Summit that took place after a gap of three years. The last summit took place in December 2021, when Russian President Putin visited Delhi.

India raises Zelensky's criticism of PM Modi's Russia visit with Kyiv

India continues to be the world’s largest arms importer, with Russia being the prime source of its procurement despite declining share in past years, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported on Monday (Mar 11).

India accounted for 9.8 per cent of the total global imports during 2019-2023. India’s arms imports increased 4.7 per cent between 2014-18 and 2019-23, despite the government’s continued efforts to boost domestic defence manufacturing and procurement.

However, Russia's share in Indian exports is slowly falling. In the period under review, Russia accounted for 36 per cent of India’s total arms imports, a first after the 1960-64 term when Russia’s share fell short of the 50 per cent mark.

The share is further expected to fall as India turns to France and the US for military hardware and Russia gets occupied with meeting its domestic demands in the face of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

With the direct acquisition of 31 armed MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones from the US for $3.9 billion as well as 26 Rafale-M fighters from France for $6 billion, the share of the two countries is likely to go up in the current five-year period.

The China factor

Arms imports by Japan and South Korea, two of China’s key neighbours, were also up by 155 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively.

According to experts, this trend was driven by concerns over China’s continued aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.

"There is little doubt that the sustained high levels of arms imports by Japan and other US allies and partners in Asia and Oceania are largely driven by one key factor: concern over China's ambitions," said Siemon Wezeman, Senior Researcher with the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme.

India still world’s largest arms importer with Russia being its top supplier: Report

Even as Ukraine seeks India’s backing in a draft resolution against Russia at the upcoming UN General Assembly meet, New Delhi has been taking great efforts to avoid discussion on additional sanctions against Moscow at the G20 bloc’s finance chiefs gathering scheduled to take place on Thursday in India's southern Bengaluru city.

According to Reuters news agency, which has quoted Indian government sources, India was not keen on discussing the issue even though US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that they will "join with allies in holding Russia accountable" for the war during G20 meetings in India.

"India is not keen to discuss or back any additional sanctions on Russia during the G20. The existing sanctions on Russia have had a negative impact on the world,” one of the unnamed Indian officials was quoted as saying.

Apart from that, confusion prevailed at the meeting convened on Wednesday to decide on the draft of the G20 communique witnessed.

Despite India’s best efforts to form a consensus on the words by calling it a "crisis" or a "challenge" instead of a "war", discussions remained inconclusive, delegates of at least seven countries present in the meetings told Reuters.

Host India avoids discussion on more Russia sanctions at G20 meet: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “independent foreign policy”, saying that he put the needs of his people above and defied the western sanctions by continuing to carry on trade with Moscow.

“He is one of those people who is capable of carrying out an independent foreign policy which serves the interests of its people. Despite all attempts to impose some kind of restrictions on India, he is like an ice-breaker and continues moving in the direction which the Indian state needs,” Putin said during a plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Moscow on Thursday, according to Sputnik news agency.

Calling Modi a “patriot”, Putin underscored the historical ties shared between India and Russia, saying, “India has come a long way from a British colony to an independent country. We have a special relationship with India. It has been underpinned by a close ally relationship of many decades."

"A lot has been under the leadership of PM Modi. He is a patriot. His idea of 'Make in India' matters both economic wise and in ethics. The future belongs to India. It can be proud of the fact that it is the largest democracy in the world."

The Russian leader also slammed the West, saying that the latter incited the Russia-Ukraine conflict and blamed the US for stoking a crisis over China’s sovereignty in Taiwan to enforce its global dominance.

“I have always believed in the power of common sense, and I still do, so I am convinced that sooner or later, the new centres of the multipolar world and the West will have to embark on an equal dialogue about our shared future, and the sooner that happens, the better,” Putin said.

Putin said that he believes that the coming decade will be more dangerous and unpredictable since World War II.

“We are standing on a historic frontier…Ahead is probably the most dangerous, unpredictable and, at the same time, an important decade since the end of World War II,” RT quoted Putin as saying.
