Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics will upgrade software for their 5G-enabled phones in India by December, the companies said on Wednesday, as Indian authorities press mobile phone manufacturers to adopt the high-speed network.

Apple said it would push software upgrades to recent models, including the iPhone 14, 13, 12 and iPhone SE, which, industry sources say, do not yet support the network.

"We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed," Apple said in a statement.

"5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services on Oct. 1 amid much fanfare, with leading telecom operator Reliance Jio saying it would make the service available in four cities, while rival Bharti Airtel targeted eight cities.

A Samsung India spokesperson said the company would roll out updates across all its 5G devices by mid-November.

Ministry of electronics and IT officials held a meeting on Wednesday dedicated to 5G adoption, which executives from Apple, Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi, and telecom operators Reliance, Airtel and Vodafone Idea attended.

The agenda includes "prioritising" the release of software upgrades for supporting the high-speed network, the notice for the closed-door meeting stated.

While telecom players and smartphone makers have been holding discussions with each other, ironing out compatibility issues between the specific 5G technology of telecom companies in India and phone software is taking time, one of the industry sources said.

A Google spokesperson said on Wednesday: "Pixel 7, 7 Pro and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest."

The base model or the cheapest version of the EV will offer a driving range of 250 kilometres on one charge, while a higher, more expensive version will offer a range of up to 315 kilometres on a single charge.

Currently, in India, Tata is the sole automaker with electric vehicles and the Tiago EV is likely to further solidify the Indian automaker's dominance in the country's electric car industry. As per Reuters, government subsidies and hefty tariffs that have prevented imports play a large part in Tata's success.

A college student who had allegedly been sexually assaulted while disembarking from an Uber auto (tuk-tuk) has expressed dissatisfaction with the ride aggregator and the company's response. The incident took place in the southern Indian city of Chennai when the woman and her friend reached their destination via an Uber ride. According to the complainant, she was stepping out of the auto and her friend was making the payment, when the driver allegedly sexually assaulted her and then managed to escape.

Based on the complaint, the police are said to have arrested the driver and seized his vehicle and also got the related CCTV footage.

However, the complainant is extremely unhappy with the way the ride aggregator has dealt with the situation and their lack of proper responses.

Speaking to WION, the student (complainant) said that an Uber representative had initially assured legal action and also mentioned that the driver would possibly be suspended. However, despite requests, Uber did not share the mobile number of the said driver. She had been seeking the mobile number of the said driver, as she wanted to share the same with the Police.

As Uber customers only have access to the common landline number that drivers use to call customers and vice versa, she doesn't have the auto driver’s personal contact number, which was one of the prime information that was missing on the FIR. This ultimately is said to have led to a delay in Police’s investigation. She said that Uber representatives who called her later, were clueless about the particular incident, as there was no communication within their team.

Note: (Name of the complainant and any information that can be used to identify her have been withheld on her specific request)

It was just a week ago that an elated Anoop was giving away media interviews about how his Rs 25 crore (around $3 million) lottery win would change his family's fortunes forever. A week later, the auto driver from the southern Indian state of Kerala experienced and understood the downsides of having big money and popularity. His daily life has taken a turn for the worse and he's even released a new video explaining his plight.

In the viral video titled "Bumper adichaal ulla avastha"(Malayalam for 'The plight after having won the bumper lottery prize'), he explains the limitless reach and popularity that the breathless media coverage of this lottery win has brought him.

"With every passing day, my plight is deteriorating... I'm unable to step out of home (as people are able to identify me everywhere, even if I'm wearing a mask)... To keep away from the attention, I'm having to move from place to place and shuttle between houses of relatives...People keep coming home asking for help and financial aid... However, I myself haven't got the prize money and nobody is willing to believe me," he laments in the video.

"Everyday, my plight is worsening. I'm unable to step outside. Police in the north Indian city of Chandigarh said that a female student arrested in the 'video leak' row has neither shot nor shared any offensive footage of other female students. The student, her male friend, and the warden of the university who was seen in the video confronting the accused have been arrested.

Chandigarh police chief Vivek Soni said authorities discovered only one video of the accused herself, even as some Indian media reports state that four videos of the accused have been discovered.

The ongoing protests by the students and relatives continued after the students refused to accept the police's findings. There were unconfirmed reports that dozens of videos of girl students were leaked and that some of the victims tried committing suicide. The police refuted both claims.

The university's pro-chancellor Dr RS Bawa said in a statement earlier that the rumour that 60 objectionable videos have been discovered and identified "are completely baseless."

A special investigation team led by a senior IPS officer has been set up to look into the claims made by the students in the wake of the protests. A high-level investigation has been promised by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Chandigarh 'video leak' row: Three held, cops say no objectionable clips of other girl students found

Education is a significant and intrinsic part of our lives. Parents begin to worry about their children's education and careers when they are three years old. Education empowers a child with knowledge and learning skills. It also develops a child’s capabilities and helps in bringing out a flourishing personality. It adds value to his/her morale and cultural ethics. It assists them in concentrating and focusing on better avenues of life. An opportunity to become educated strengthened the setup of a dynamic world.

It not only generates a sense of accomplishment but also infuses a feeling of encouragement and motivation to spread awareness about its surroundings. The development of an infant to an adult turns out to be the most syndicated and comprehensive idea to propagate literacy in this world of chaos.

A phenomenon of learning new ways for subject-oriented projects is a concept of defining your idea of existence on this earthly plane. Moreover, with the ongoing policies and government schemes for imparting training in knowledge to young minds, it can be asserted that the present scenario is moving towards progression and modernism. The adaption of historically Thomas Macaulay’s education system has turned out to be a blessing, and Gandhi’s talim system largely contributed towards the upliftment of good accessibility of understanding among the educated yet liberal approaches.

Without a doubt, learning literacy scholarships is the only way to achieve the ultimate awakening of understanding the rational logic around you. It can tutor you in becoming a self-trainer so that a guiding light can show you a rightly chosen path.

Nonetheless, a disciplined attitude to prove your worth in a specific setting of this multicultural and diverse world is a source of cultivating personality development and drilling improvement.

In the present scenario, according to the National Statistical Commission of India, the literacy rate stood at 77 per cent in 2017-18. Males make up 84.7 per cent of the population, while females make up 70 per cent. Ignorance of learning and schooling can lead to frustration and low self-esteem. As per a report, India has the largest proportion of illiterate adults, which is 287 million, or 37 per cent.

If we go by the latest reports, Human Resource Development's new schemes regarding the education sector are appalling as they show no coherent approach. It shows that the basic requirements of an education system are decided based on capabilities that necessitate the allocation of the right attitude in the mind of a child. Indeed, it’s a well-thought plan to encourage the suitable idea of propagating a unified approach through individual efforts.

Be it five-year plans or seven-year plan, an improvement in the education sector is a powerful weapon to move toward self-fulfillment and self-sufficiency. Furthermore, the plan to curtail the adversaries is an assertive idea, but at the same time, the uncertainties should be kept in mind while dreaming of a new world of unified educated Indians.

The basic challenges are as follows:

School dropouts: Generally, the 2020-21 report by the Unified District Information System for Education, showed the annual dropout rate of secondary school students was 14.6 per cent. On the other hand, at the primary level, the dropout rate was 0.8 per cent. So, overall, this is a commendable effort made by the government.

But at the same time, the rate also stated in the report a depressive thought of not attending school. As per an economic survey, the pandemic has also hit schools in rural and urban areas, which has resulted in high dropout rates in the schools. The dropout rate has increased due to the massive digital divide. The enrolment dropped from 135 million in 2012-13 to 122 million in 2019-20 at the primary level because of a lower enrolment of children in the 6-10 age group. This is one of the challenges that are present in front of the government.

Pandemic: Believe it or not, the fear of a pandemic is still not over. No matter how many booster doses and vaccines are administered, there is still hope of living a balanced life. But still, the latest statistics haven't shown a good picture of the world. A kind of uncertainty is still looming over the minds of many people, and that has become a hindrance to proving themselves as physically secure people. Indeed, they’ve resumed their work, but again, it seems a momentary development that is questioning the relevance of education while fighting the odds.

According to the latest Union Health Ministry report, India’s active caseload of COVID-19 cases stands at 101K. The active cases comprise 0.23 per cent of the total infections, while the national recovery rate stands at 98.58 per cent. India so far has reported 13,272 new cases and 36 deaths in the last 24 hours. Therefore, it shows that the pandemic has created havoc in terms of human extinction.

Epidemic: The sudden outbreak of the epidemic of MonkeyPox has again questioned the community population. Already, the coronavirus caused havoc in society, calling into question the relevance of the current global system, which includes education. Furthermore, the question of living on Earth has suddenly become a farce, as it only instills a sense of insecurity and uncertainty. No matter whether a person is heading to school or at a workplace, a mental imbalance has been created which is only questionable.

Health & Hygiene: According to UNICEF India, nearly 22 per cent of Indian schools lacked appropriate toilets for girls, and 58 per cent of preschools lacked all toilets. Nearly 56 per cent of preschools had no water available on the premises. Even though the benchmark achievement through Swachch Vidyalaya Puraskar is commendable in some places, efforts should be proactively diverted towards this issue within the stipulated time.

Minority Development: A slight focus should also be given to the development of children from the minority section of society. According to the Sachar Committee Report, one-fourth of the Muslim children in the age group of 6–14 years of age are either dropouts or matriculated. For the children above the age of 17, the educational qualification of Muslims at matriculation is 17 per cent as against the national average of 26 per cent.

In conclusion, it can be said that the entire education system of India is progressive and high-spirited, which allows every individual to establish themselves as literate citizen of society. Indeed, the elephant-sized challenges are only testing the tolerance, patience, and capabilities of defining their overall governance in India. However, the key to establishing itself as a fully capable government is by accepting the testing times of challenges fearlessly and getting confirmed seats for the coming elections.

What challenges affect education in India?

The sky over the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, especially in Lucknow on Monday (September 12) evening, was bathed in a rare glimmer, or what locals call "amazing lighting." The electromagnetic light seems to be travelling in a straight line.

Locals recorded the flashing lights with their phones and videos on social media sites. The pictures and video went viral within a few moments.

A local on social media stated, "Today at 7:15 pm around I saw one mysterious object full of light, like train, is traveling in sky and light coming out from bogies windows," India TV reported.

Another instance was a picture taken by a pilot that had all netizens excited. He was in awe at what he observed as those plans flew over the Atlantic Ocean. There were crimson, shimmering dots in the sky in front of him.

The pilot claimed that he hadn't seen anything like this, nor did the Twitterverse.

Later, official defence sources confirmed the light to be a satellite and earlier media reports said that it was one of Elon Musk's "Starlink" satellites, news agency ANI reported.

Notably, similar mysterious lights that baffled people were photographed in Punjab's Pathankot in December 2021. Before this, in June 2021, unusual lights flickering in the night sky had been seen in Gujarat and surrounding areas, sparking rumours about UFOs.

The autopsy of Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of the Tata Group, and Jehangir Pandole, a friend, revealed that both men died from "severe head trauma and extensive external and internal lesions to important organs".

After their remains were transported from Palghar's Kasa Sub-District Hospital on Monday around midnight, Cyrus Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole had post-mortem examinations performed at the government-run JJ Hospital.

An autopsy in the case of Mistry found serious head trauma that resulted in a haemorrhage (heavy bleeding). The neck, thigh, head, and chest all had many fractures. The JJ hospital's medical staff claims that these injuries happen when the body experiences a significant jolt, such as when a car suddenly stops or accelerates rapidly.

The samples of viscera will be forwarded to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina, according to JJ officials. A viscera analysis is performed to look for, among other things, residues of poison, alcohol, and chemicals. According to sources, samples have also been saved for DNA analysis.

Leaders of the ruling coalition in Bihar demanded on Sunday that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be stripped of its general authority, claiming that the agency was being used for political ends by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the federal level. The Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946's Section 6 states that the CBI must obtain the appropriate state governments' permission before conducting investigations within their borders.

Nine states have revoked their general approval of the CBI's ability to investigate cases within their borders, including West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Meghalaya.

Leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Shivanand Tiwari, told PTI that the grand coalition government in Bihar must revoke the approval provided to the CBI due to the manner the federal agencies are being abused to target the BJP's political adversaries.

“Besides, option should also be explored by the state government to approach the judiciary to check the misuse of central agencies,” he said.

“I must say that the central investigative agencies have lost their credibility during the NDA regime,” he said.

Manoj Kumar Jha, a senior RJD politician, told the media that once the BJP's "Maharashtra-like plan" to rule the state through the backdoor failed, it engaged independent agencies like the CBI, ED, and Income Tax. “The BJP is feeling embarrassed after the Gurgaon-based mall and other business establishments raided by the CBI came out with statements denying their links with deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav,” said Jha.

The Janata Dal (United), the party of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, declared that the moment was right to revoke the CBI's general approval. People in Bihar are paying attention and will respond appropriately when the time is right, according to state minister Madan Sahni. "The way central agencies like the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department are being misused to ruin the image of opposition leaders, people in Bihar are watching," he added.

He criticized BJP leaders and Union ministers who had disparaged CM Kumar. Sahni stated, "The politicians, who are currently holding good positions in the administration and the party, must remember efforts of the CM in supporting their election success.

Mehboob Alam, a CPIML(L) state legislator, asserted that there was no question the federal government was abusing its power to topple non-BJP state governments.

“All central investigative agencies are working with political motives and they never act against BJP leaders. Our grand alliance government in Bihar should immediately withdraw the general consent granted to the CBI, curtailing the agency’s powers in the state,” he said.

As part of its investigation into the alleged land-for-jobs fraud that is said to have occurred when Lalu Prasad was the railway minister, the CBI investigated the homes of senior RJD officials in Bihar on Wednesday. The operation happened on a day when the state house was set to vote on the chief minister's trust after he broke with the BJP to form an alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). According to Section 6 of the DSPE Act, 1946, several state governments have given the CBI broad consent to investigate a specific class of offenses against a specific category of people, allowing the CBI to register and look into such specific problems.

The minister's response states that Mizoram, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Meghalaya have withdrawn or not generally authorized the CBI to investigate matters. According to Section 6 of the DSPE Act, 1946, the state government must give special approval in states where general consent has not been granted or where the general consent does not apply to the individual instance.

Extension of the CBI's jurisdiction under the terms of Section 5 of the DSPE Act, 1946, can only be taken into consideration when the state government has given its permission.

Bihar: Ruling alliance requests that CBI universal consent be withdrawn

An Indian man Tungnath Chaturvedi has won a 22-year-old legal battle with the railways over an overpriced ticket.

In 1999, Chaturvedi bought two railway tickets for which he was charged 20 rupees ($0.25; £0.21) extra at Mathura cantonment railway station in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Chaturvedi, a lawyer, filed a case against the North East Railway in consumer court against the injustice which specifically deals with grievances related to services.

Chaturvedi told BBC, "I have attended more than 100 hearings in connection with this case. But you can't put a price on the energy and time I've lost fighting this case."

Also read | To move coal fast by freeing tracks, Indian Railways cancels 753 passenger trains amid shortage

According to him, "The railways also tried to dismiss the case, saying complaints against the railways should be addressed to the railway tribunal and not consumer court."

"But we used a 2021 Supreme Court ruling to prove that the matter could be heard in a consumer court," he added.

After a long legal battle for 22 years, the consumer court ordered the railways to pay him a fine of 15,000 rupees ($188; £154) and refund him the 20 rupees at 12 per cent interest per year.

According to the court, the interest rate would be increased to 15 per cent if the amount was not paid within the specified time of 30 days.

In response, Chaturvedi said, "It's not the money that matters. This was always a fight for justice and a fight against corruption, so it was worth it."

"Also, since I am an advocate myself, I didn't have to pay money to a lawyer or bear the cost of travelling to the court. That can get quite expensive," he added.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has plans to build a pair of identical satellites dubbed 'Disha' to study the upper atmosphere. While placed in low earth orbit (nearly 500km above the earth's surface), the spacecraft is meant to study the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere, including the distribution of temperature, density, and chemical constituents, and the chemical reactions that occur there. ISRO officials revealed this at a National Meeting on Aeronomy Research, themed "Science of Near-Earth Space and its Applications".

Elaborating on the significance of a mission such as Disha, Dr Shantanu, Scientific Secretary, ISRO, said that the upper atmosphere was the first region of space to feel the wrath of the sun, before it percolates down to lower altitudes. He added that the mission's scientific objective is to perform space weather studies and solar-terrestrial interactions, so as to have advance warning regarding critical space-based weather events. "Once such warnings are available, we can take preventive action to safeguard our space assets." Disha will be a twin satellite aeronomy mission where both satellites carry similar payloads. However, the Disha H satellite will be placed at an 85-degree high inclination from the earth's equator, whereas the Disha L satellite will be placed at a 25-degree low inclination, "he explained.

Speaking at the event, Dr Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, emphasised the need for space-based observations such as Disha. He pointed out that ISRO had sounding rockets (small rockets that carry light payloads to conduct upper atmospheric experiments) that could reach up to 500km in space. However, he indicated that sounding rockets only offered a very short-term observational capability, as opposed to the long-term presence and observation capability of dedicated satellites in orbit. He urged the participating scientists to look at upper atmospheric research and how the benefits and findings from the same can be used for the benefit of India. Making a mention of the information gained from global missions. He urged his scientists to ponder over what ISRO's contribution was towards global knowledge and work towards contributing more.
