India's much-anticipated and most sophisticated spacefaring mission 'Gaganyaan' Human Spaceflight is expected to be carried out by the fourth quarter of 2024, the government revealed in Parliament. However, there will be four crucial test flights that will be conducted prior to the actual mission, it was added.

Gaganyaan aims to launch an Indian rocket carrying a crew module with Indian astronauts to low earth orbit, where they would orbit for a few days and then return to earth by splashing down in the ocean. Originally targeted for 2022, coinciding with the 75th year of Indian independence, the project has been set back by delays owing to COVID-19 and related restrictions in 2020-21.

As per the information shared in Parliament by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, Prime Minister's Office, two initial test missions would be carried out using a Test Vehicle (TV). This would be followed by the uncrewed mission 'G1'(in the last quarter of 2023) and the second uncrewed mission 'G2' in the second quarter of 2024. "India’s maiden human space flight ‘H1’ mission is targeted to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2024," it was mentioned.

Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, ISRO had earlier told WION that the test vehicle is a newly-realised multi-purpose rocket to accomplish various tests and demonstrations. "This vehicle will be powered by the engine of a liquid fuel strap-on motor used on the GSLV Mk 2 rocket, which is ISRO's trusted and reliable Vikas engine. During the test, it can carry the crew module to the required altitude depending upon mission requirements. Once the rocket and crew module separate, the crew module will be on its own and deploy parachutes to slowly splash-land on water," Dr Nair had explained.

India's first and only international news channel WION and Vikram Chandra, founder of Editorji Technologies, are coming together to present two weekly news shows - 'The India Story' and 'This World' in the new year.

The marquee shows are scheduled for an early January 2023 launch on both WION linear and digital, fulfilling Zee Media's commitment to take India's voice to the wider world.

Explaining the partnership, Zee Media publisher Dr Subhash Chandra said, "Vikram is arguably the only broadcast journalist who's managed to remain neutral, non-controversial and rise above the 'noise at nine.' That's a rare attribute in these polarised times. He is seen as fair and balanced across the opinion spectrum, which lends a high degree of credibility. People trust his views on a subject, a factor we will build on with these two shows."

The prime objective of the two high-voltage shows on WION presented by Vikram Chandra is to help the world understand major global events from a uniquely Indian perspective. That will be the theme of 'This World' that Vikram Chandra will host on WION, World Is One. To top it, WION's global footprint will provide enhanced reach to 'The India Story,' which has already been running on Editorji, as it seeks to be the definitive programme explaining India to a global audience.

Vikram Chandra said, "I have been away from TV news for several years now, building within Editorji the technologies that I feel can transform video news and information. I had no intention of returning to the noise and din of news programmes dominated by domestic politics. But WION is different. It is the only true international channel out of India – and it has tremendous reach across the world. I look forward to placing 'The India Story' on WION and working with their talented team to make 'This World' a "must-watch" weekly show on global events."

Announcing the partnership, Madhu Soman, Chief Business Officer, WION, who joined the channel in August after a seven-year stint with Bloomberg in Hong Kong, said, "Believe it or not, we connected via LinkedIn a couple of months ago. Vikram didn't know me from Adam. Today, he's a friend and an ally in WION's journey, and I'm sure our partnership will make 'This World' sit up and take note of 'The India Story' as we seek solutions."

Two pedigreed professionals with no prior connection coming together organically is a testament to WION's commitment to the cause of neutral and non-controversial journalism. In addition, Vikram Chandra coming on board further strengthens WION's efforts to position India at the high table of global diplomacy.

"My conversations with Madhu were a breeze, and we are both clear that India, with its billion-plus population, needs its own voice in the world. That's where I felt WION offered a wonderful opportunity to bring the brightest minds together on our shows," added Vikram Chandra.

In addition to these two shows, the Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL) and Editorji Technologies will collaborate on programmes for social transformation, combining Vikram's experience in programmes like 'The Greenathon,' 'Save Our Tigers' and 'Banega Swacch India' together with the massive reach of Zee Media including WION, Zee News and India.com.

Apart from presenting shows like 'The Big Fight,' '9 o'clock News' and 'Gadget Guru,' he has also been successful in introducing pioneering innovations such as news on mobile phones, live streaming of videos, etc.

Vikram won the title of 'Global Leader for Tomorrow' by the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Indian Television Academy Award for 'Best Anchor for a Talk Show,' the Hero Honda Award for 'Best Anchor-person' and the Teacher's Achievement Award for Communication, along with featuring in the top 20 on the Impact list of the Digital Power 100.

The government of Jammu and Kashmir is working hard to restore the beauty and water quality of the world-famous Dal Lake in Srinagar. After decades, the government is opening 20 navigation channels in the Dal Lake, which will help to improve the quality of water and free movement of locals and tourists into the interiors of the lake. The government is also laying a sewage system for the houseboats to dispose of the waste in the treatment plant.

Dal Lake is considered the Jewel in the Crown of the Kashmir Region, but the Lake has been dying a slow death due to Pollution and Illegal Encroachments over the years. And now finally, the government and Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) are working on the restoration of the Lake to its pristine water quality and opening of the navigation channels which have been closed for decades. Around 20 navigation channels are being opened and restored in Dal Lake. This will help the people to navigate freely in the lake while also improving the quality of the water.

''We are working on 20 navigation channels at the moment, work on seven of the channels has been completed and work is going on for 13 more. We are hoping that the work will be completed by the end of this year. Navigation channels are very important for the inhabitants living on the lake, It helps them to move easily. The tourists get to see the interiors of the lake and moreover have an in-depth look into the lake. The water quality also improves due to the opening of these navigation channels, these channels help water to circulate. Dal Lake has a lot of aquatic life, the more these channels would be opened the more the aquatic life would spread. The work on these channels has been started after around two decades,'' said Tanvir Ayub, AEE, Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA).

Opening these Navigation channels around the Dal Lake will not only help the local inhabitants of the lake but also the tourists coming to Srinagar. Dal Lake is among the most frequently visited places by tourists in the Kashmir region and by opening these channels, tourists can get to see the interiors of the lake.

''It helps the lake as well as the inhabitants of the lake. Their manoeuvring, they can navigate easily plus the tourists can see the inner side of Dal Lake, the water circulation would be better, and the quality of water will improve as well. Almost all the channels were blocked. We are opening them and widening them as well. We are getting support from locals in helping us to beautify the lake,'' said Masood Ahmad Khan, Official LCMA.

The locals living on the lake say this will help them further in taking tourists to the interiors of various areas of the city via Dal Lake.

''It will help us a lot to move around the lake. Tourists can also visit the interiors of the lake after opening of these channels. It will beautify the lake and its great work being carried out by the authorities. Due to the opening of these channels, we will be able to move around easily on the lake,'' said Suhail Ahmad, Local.

One of the Major pollutants for the Lake has been the sewage coming from the houseboats on the Lake. With more than 600 houseboats on the lake, there has not been a proper sewage system in place for these houseboats. Most of the waste coming from these houseboats has been dumped in the lake. And now the government is laying a sewerage network for these houseboats. Floating pipes have been laid from where all the waste would be collected at a chamber and later shifted to the closest treatment plant. This will help clean the lake and to nurture the aquatic life in the lake.

''There are around 600 houseboats on Dal Lake, they have been divided into eleven clusters and initially we are taking the sewerage network of the houseboats for cluster number two in which we have around 70 houseboats to check the inflow of sewage into the lake. We have laid 200 mm HD Pipes, the network will be all floating, finally the sewage generated by the houseboats will be collected in a chamber from where it will be lifted to the nearest sewer line where it will be treated. The sewage generated by the houseboats used to go into the lake, and now with these steps the water quality will improve. The houseboat owners have to understand that it has to be a joint effort between people and the government. The waste has to be disposed of properly, '' said Tanvir Ayub, AEE, Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA).

The houseboat community living on the lake is extremely excited about the step taken by the government. They say that it will keep the lake alive for generations to come.
The 56th launch of India's PSLV or the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket is said to take place in a short while from now. The launch is significant as it will showcase India's gestures towards space diplomacy. It will also provide an opportunity to Indian startups to have their satellites placed into the orbit.

India: ISRO to launch PSLV on its 56th mission; rocket to carry nine satellites

The Indian Space Agency (ISRO) has been carrying out developmental work towards its maiden Human Spaceflight mission 'Gaganyaan'. On one hand, while the work is progressing towards human-rating the country's largest rocket LVM3, to be able to carry astronauts; efforts are underway to ensure that the astronauts land safely on the water. In order to fulfil the latter objective, ISRO recently conducted a parachute-based test meant to be used for Mission 'Gaganyaan'.

Conducted by ISRO's lead facility, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the test was carried out in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, in close coordination with the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and Defence Research Development Organization(DRDO). Known as the Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test, or IMAT, the crew module deceleration system was tested at the Babina Field Fire Range (BFFR) in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.

On re-entering the denser parts of the earth's atmosphere, the capsule will be encountering temperatures of several thousand degrees centigrade and will slow down considerably. Even then, the rapidly falling object would have to be further slowed down from hundreds of kilometres per hour to around 10 kilometres per hour, a safe landing speed for splashing down at sea.

It is for this important purpose of slowing down the rapidly falling capsule, that the Parachutes are being tested. According to ISRO, the Gaganyaan Crew Module comprises a total of ten parachutes."In flight, the parachute sequence starts with deployment of 2 Nos. of Apex cover separation parachutes (protection cover for the Crew Module Parachute compartment) followed by 2 Nos. of Drogue parachute deployment to stabilise & bring down the velocity. Upon Drogue parachute release, 3 Nos. of Pilot chute will be used to extract 3 Nos. of Main parachute individually, to reduce the speed of the Crew module to safe levels during its landing. Two of the three main chutes are sufficient to land the astronauts on earth, and the third is redundant" ISRO said.

The recent test was a simulation, wherein the main parachute fails to open and how the landings were carried out under such a scenario. ISRO said, a 5-tonne dummy mass, equivalent to the Crew module mass, was taken to an altitude of 2.5 kilometres and dropped using the Indian Air force’s IL-76 heavy-lift transporter aircraft. Two small pyro-based mortar-deployed pilot parachutes then pulled the main parachutes. The fully inflated Main parachutes reduced the payload speed to a safe landing speed as the entire sequence lasted about 2-3 minutes and the payload mass landed softly on the ground.

The design and development of the parachute-based deceleration system for the crew module is a joint venture between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
