Death toll reaches 108
The flood situation in Assam remained dire on Thursday (June 23), with seven additional fatalities. The number of fatalities has now reached 108 due to this year’s flood and landslides, reported by PTI.
Among the seven deaths, two each were from Cachar and Barpeta districts and one from each of the districts of Bajali, Dhubri, and Tamulpur.
People in search of shelters
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said the number of people affected by the current flood situation has decreased from Wednesday’s 5.4 million people in 32 districts to 4.3 million in 30 districts.
Severe floods brought by nonstop rain has impacted 103 revenue circles and 4536 villages, 2,84,875 prisoners found shelter in 759 relief camps.
Dalai Lama donates Rs 1 million to state
Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama donated Rs 1 million to help with food relief efforts in Assam and expressed his sorrow over the suffering brought by the floods.
Chief minister pays visit to affected regions
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted inspection of several affected districts. The minister has deployed a special aircraft to perform an aerial inspection of the damage on the Barak river and its surrounding areas.
Centre continuously monitoring the flood situation
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Assam and collaborating closely with the state to offer all sorts of support and help to overcome the situation.
He said, “Army and NDRF teams are present in the flood affected areas. They are conducting evacuation operations and assisting those who are affected.
