The clash, which was reported to have taken place on December 9, was the first major skirmish&nbsp;between the Indian and Chinese armies since the fierce face-off in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.&nbsp;

While addressing the Indian community in Cyprus on Friday, Jaishankar also attacked Pakistan indirectly as he said that terrorism can never be used as a tool to force India to the negotiating table. It was his first official visit to the&nbsp;Mediterranean country.&nbsp;

Jaishankar slammed the "neighbour" and said no country has suffered from terrorism as much as India. He said, "We want good neighbourly relations with everybody. But good neighbourly relations doesn't mean excusing or looking away or rationalising terrorism. That we are very clear. We will never normalise it. We will never allow terrorism to force us to the negotiating table."&nbsp;

Jaishankar says ties with China ‘not normal’, adds India will not compromise on core issues

India has suspended tourist visas for nationals of China in the aftermath of Beijing's reluctance to allow the return of Indians stuck at home since the lockdowns and restrictions started due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.&nbsp;

India-based news agency PTI reported that global airlines body IATA told its member carriers on April 20 about the suspension of tourist visas issued to Chinese nationals.&nbsp;

Important to note that thousands of Indians including more than 23,000 students have been stuck in India since 2020 as the visa process as well as flights from India were suspended by Beijing due to the Covid situation.&nbsp;

The news agency mentioned that in its latest update on April, global air transport body IATA said that tourist visas issued to nationals of China were no longer valid.&nbsp;

However, the report also stated that the Indian government is still giving business, employment, diplomatic and official visas to Chinese nationals.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agencies, IATA's circular issued on April 20 regarding India noted: "Tourist visas issued to nationals of China (People's Republic) are no longer valid."&nbsp;

Tourist visas for Chinese citizens suspended by India: Report

China continues to develop infrastructure along the India border - the Line of Actual Control (LAC) - with the latest reports suggesting that they have constructed at least three mobile towers at Hot Springs in eastern Ladakh.&nbsp;

Local councillor Konchok Stanzin said that the newly developed towers are very close to the LAC.&nbsp;

This comes after the Indian authorities in January this year strongly objected "illegal construction of a bridge" by China. &nbsp;

The construction of the bridge was on part of the Pangong Lake in Eastern Ladakh. India had said that it is monitoring the situation.&nbsp;

But what does it mean for India?

According to defence expert Major General (retd) S B Asthana, the construction of a bridge in Easter Ladakh and recent news of the towers of communication being erected is something that indicates Chinese determination to continue with infrastructure development and be able to have better response timings in case of a situation if it so develops.&nbsp;

India must also improve its infrastructure development. "We need to develop the communication infrastructure also in addition to the road and other infrastructure because sound communication is the key to command and control and for effective management of the border," he said.&nbsp;

Why communication towers are important?

General Asthana said, "If the communication can be developed in remote areas of various parts of the country, there's no reason why it can't be developed along the LAC," he added.&nbsp;

General Asthana said what usually happens is that the various departments do not find it cost-effective when the customers are fewer.&nbsp;

"But then there's a strategic cost that has to be paid and for that even if the population density is low, we need to develop the communication infrastructure much better so that we can respond accordingly, especially when the stand-off is on and when the LAC is being managed and there is a heavier troop density along the LAC by both sides."&nbsp;

"So I think we need to perhaps push through our infrastructure development also at the same pace to match China and ensure we don't lack behind," he said.&nbsp;

After talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi today that lasted for three hours, External Affairs Minister S Jashankar dubbed the ties between India and China as “not normal”, saying that the “current situation is a work in progress” due to friction at the border.

“So long there are very large deployments, border situation is not normal. We still have ongoing friction areas, where some progress has been made in resolving some friction areas, including Pangong Tso. Our discussion today was how to take this forward. There have been 15 rounds of talks,” he told the media after the conclusion of his talks.

When he was asked where the India-China ties lie at this juncture, he responded, “If you ask me if our relationship today is normal, then my answer is 'no it is not normal' (because of the Chinese deployments). Our effort today is to sort out the issue in its entirety."

With regards to Ladakh, the minister said there are still ongoing friction areas and there was "progress in other areas", adding, “There should not be attempts to unilaterally change status quo."

He said the relationship was based on “three mutuals—- mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest”.

India also raised the issue of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s references to Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Islamabad.

The Indian minister further said that Afghanistan and Ukraine issues were also discussed at length during the talks.

“So far as Afghanistan is concerned, India's policy is guided by the UN Security Council Resolution 2593. On Ukraine, we discussed our respective approaches &amp; perspective but agreed that diplomacy and dialogue must be the priority,” he said.

When asked for reasons surrounding the secrecy of the Chinese minister’s visit, Jaishankar said, “Chinese did not want the visit to be announced earlier.”

Earlier in the day, Wang Yi met Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who asserted that an "early and complete disengagement of troops" at points of friction along the border was key to restoring normal ties between the two countries.

Doval also called for removing "impediments" to allow bilateral ties to "take the natural course" and stressed that "actions should not violate the spirit of equal and mutual security".

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have an informal summit talk on April 27-28 in Wuhan, China, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Modi will be visiting the central Chinese city at the invitation of President Xi, Wang said at a joint media event with visiting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj after their talks.

''We will make sure that the informal summit between the two leaders is a complete success and a milestone in China-India relations,'' he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Informed sources that it will be an informal summit meeting between Xi and Modi during which both leaders will try to work out a new paradigm for the bilateral ties bogged down with a host of disputes and differences, PTI reported.

This will be the fourth visit of Modi to China after he came to power in 2014. He is again due to visit China to take part in the SCO summit to be held at Qingdao city on June 9-10.

The Modi-Xi summit meeting is taking place in the backdrop of series of high-level interactions between both the two countries starting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang's visit to India in December, the first after Dokalam standoff.

Swaraj arrived here on Saturday on a four-day visit to take part in the foreign ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).&nbsp;

This is the first meeting between the&nbsp;two after Wang was elevated as state councillor last month which makes him the top diplomat of the country in the Chinese hierarchy. He also continues to be foreign minister.

Swaraj congratulated Wang on being elevated as state councillor and appointed the special representative for the India-China boundary talks.

PM Modi to visit China on Apr 27-28 for summit talks with Prez Xi Jinping

Xi Jinping&#39;s pet Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) can pose a &quot;major challenge&quot; in resetting China&#39;s ties with India, analysts here have said, days after the Chinese parliament backed his plan to rule indefinitely amid Sino-India rapprochement following the Dokalam standoff.

The BRI, a multi-billion-dollar initiative launched by Xi when he came to power in 2013, has become a major sticking point in the bilateral ties. The BRI also includes the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which India opposed as it goes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

India had also boycotted last year&#39;s Belt and Road Forum organised by China.

The BRI, aimed at promoting a network of roads, ports and rail networks all over the world to spread China&#39;s influence, is now expected to vigorously push by Xi after the National People&#39;s Congress on March 11 removed the two-term limit for the president.

The historic mandate for Xi to continue in office for life came just as India and China began a high-level dialogue to put the ties back on track after the relations were bogged down by a host of issues including, the CPEC and the 73-day long standoff at Dokalam last year.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit China next month which officials say will send a very strong message to the international community about efforts by both countries to improve relations.

&quot;There are very serious efforts are being made by both countries to improve relations and China attaches a lot of importance to its ties with India in the region,&quot; Hu Shisheng, Director of the official China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations told.

As the two countries seek to address a number of issues like China blocking India&#39;s efforts to list JeM leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN as well as India&#39;s entry to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) besides Dokalam, they need to come up with a creative solution to address differences on the BRI, Hu said.

&quot;Now Xi is set to be at the helm for a long term and he is going to pursue the BRI very seriously&quot; as this is his project, he said.

China, which has been maintaining that the BRI will not have any impact on its stand that Kashmir issue should be resolved between India and Pakistan, has also offered initiatives like renaming the CPEC to address India&#39;s reservations.

Officials say Chinese investment flows into India have been affected as China has been routing all its external investments in recent years only under the BRI. India is also a part of the Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar (BCIM) corridor which is also part of the BRI but has made little progress.

Officials say China&#39;s investments in India were just about $3.5 billion far less than $20 billion promised by Xi during his visit to India in 2015.

He said both countries need to show flexibility. While China should be flexible by not pressing India to cooperate under the BRI framework for investments in India, New Delhi could make reciprocal gestures to get the investments for infrastructure projects.

Rong Ying, the vice president of China Institute of International Studies, which is affiliated to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said both the countries need to address the trust deficit.

&quot;Equally important is for both countries to find a way to address differences in a constructive and forward-looking manner,&quot; he told.

He also said there was no need to worry about the long-term rule by Xi.

&quot;I don&#39;t see any reason for worry. I only want to see that the two sides draw correct lessons (out of Dokalam standoff). Then we can work hard for a stable relationship,&quot; he said.

&quot;No one wants an incident like Dong Long (Dokalam). We are able to solve it through peaceful way through talks shows the maturity of the relationship,&quot; Rong, who formerly worked as a Chinese diplomat in India, said.

BRI could be sticking point in India-China ties: Experts

Did China not anticipate the Indian reaction to its road building on the Doklam Plateau? &nbsp;Some of the Indian analysis suggests&nbsp;this may be the case given the intensity of Beijing&#39;s response and the continuing barrage of criticism from its state-controlled media.&nbsp;

A former Indian Army commander who served in the area provided some perspective: &quot;The brinkmanship we see from their side is part of their policy, they think they can browbeat us but we must not blink,&quot; he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He pointed out that India had no alternative since China was altering the status quo on the plateau, so &quot;we had to stop them.&quot; &nbsp;He would not comment on whether India reacted on its own upon seeing what the Chinese were up to, or did it act upon Bhutan&#39;s complaint. &nbsp;But he acknowledged that this scenario had been war gamed by the army brass, and its implications thought through. &nbsp;

A retired brigadier was more direct, saying the Indian Army would have responded to any Chinese provocation in that area on its own regardless of the &quot;sentiments of the Royal Bhutanese Army&quot;. &nbsp;In that sense, It helped that India has a &quot;training team&quot; in Bhutan. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

But is there a larger point here? &nbsp;There is a view that India&#39;s intervention on behalf of its smaller neighbour has upset Beijing. &nbsp;

&quot;We came to the support of Bhutan and that worries them,&quot; said the former army commander. &quot;There was a similar standoff in 1987 in Sumdorong Chu in Arunachal Pradesh which went on for over a year but that was purely bilateral. Here we have intervened in support of a third party.&quot;&nbsp;

It has implications for India&#39;s traditionally negative &#39;Big Brother&#39; image in this region (which among other reasons explains Chinese inroads). If the standoff prolongs, that perception could change to something more favourable towards India. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The standoff has invited considerable comment not from the ruling Nepali establishment but from the Nepali press with some supporting China, others sympathetic to Bhutan (why can&#39;t Thimphu have relations with China?) and some backing India although with caveats: for instance the need for Nepal to resolve its own tri-junction issues with India and China (Lipulekh in western Nepal and Jhinsang Chuli in eastern Nepal).&nbsp;

Some of the comment also reflects Nepal&#39;s ties with India, ties of blood, culture and history (including the 2-3 million Nepalis living and working in India and the 65,000 Nepalis serving in the Indian armed forces). &nbsp;&nbsp;

Sri Lanka has been studiedly silent on the Doklam standoff perhaps with reason: Sri Lanka is indebted to China to the tune of 8 billion dollars. Unable to pay off the debt, it is giving Chinese companies equity in projects like the Hambantota Port. That has ignited a storm of protests from people living near the port whose land the government plans to acquire on behalf of Chinese companies.&nbsp;

To give the Indian devil its due, aid from Delhi has helped Sri Lanka&#39;s social sector, or provided funds and expertise for projects executed by Sri Lankans for Sri Lankans. &nbsp;Which is why India&#39;s decision to stand by Bhutan and take on the Chinese could correct some of the perceptions about India in the neighbourhood.&nbsp;

Looking beyond the neighbourhood, it&#39;s clear that here also India stands alone. The US and Australia have remained neutral, a reflection of how important the China trade and investment is to their economies. The 11-nation ASEAN has kept silent given it is involved in negotiations with the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). &nbsp;As for Europe, apart from some insipid statements from the European Parliament urging India and China to talk, there&#39;s been nothing.&nbsp;

Old ally Russia too has had nothing to say, a reflection again of how indebted it is to Beijing given Western sanctions. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Yes, India is alone in this standoff. But there&#39;s also the buzz that China sees no purpose in escalation. Presently its trade surplus with India is over 50 billion dollars; Chinese companies are moving to India to take advantage of a growing market; there is also perhaps the recognition that China is not liked in most parts of the world and a conflict raises the risk of sanctions and embargoes that could further slow down the economy. &nbsp;So it could well be that the noise over Doklam will subside, hopefully as winter sets in. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The lack of a resolution is troubling. China could well raise temperatures on the plateau (or elsewhere) again. &nbsp;But India could be even better prepared by then.&nbsp;

If the standoff prolongs, that perception could change to something more favourable towards India. The standoff has invited considerable comment not from the ruling Nepali establishment but from the Nepali press with some supporting China, others sympathetic to Bhutan (why can't Thimphu have relations with China?) and some backing India although with caveats: for instance the need for Nepal to resolve its own tri-junction issues with India and China (Lipulekh in western Nepal and Jhinsang Chuli in eastern Nepal). Some of the comment also reflects Nepal's ties with India, ties of blood, culture and history (including the 2-3 million Nepalis living and working in India and the 65,000 Nepalis serving in the Indian armed forces). Sri Lanka has been studiedly silent on the Doklam standoff perhaps with reason: Sri Lanka is indebted to China to the tune of 8 billion dollars. Unable to pay off the debt, it is giving Chinese companies equity in projects like the Hambantota Port. That has ignited a storm of protests from people living near the port whose land the government plans to acquire on behalf of Chinese companies. To give the Indian devil its due, aid from Delhi has helped Sri Lanka's social sector, or provided funds and expertise for projects executed by Sri Lankans for Sri Lankans. Which is why India's decision to stand by Bhutan and take on the Chinese could correct some of the perceptions about India in the neighbourhood. Looking beyond the neighbourhood, it's clear that here also India stands alone. The US and Australia have remained neutral, a reflection of how important the China trade and investment is to their economies. The 11-nation ASEAN has kept silent given it is involved in negotiations with the China-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). As for Europe, apart from some insipid statements from the European Parliament urging India and China to talk, there's been nothing. Old ally Russia too has had nothing to say, a reflection again of how indebted it is to Beijing given Western sanctions. Yes, India is alone in this standoff. But there's also the buzz that China sees no purpose in escalation. Presently its trade surplus with India is over 50 billion dollars; Chinese companies are moving to India to take advantage of a growing market; there is also perhaps the recognition that China is not liked in most parts of the world and a conflict raises the risk of sanctions and embargoes that could further slow down the economy. So it could well be that the noise over Doklam will subside, hopefully as winter sets in. The lack of a resolution is troubling. China could well raise temperatures on the plateau (or elsewhere) again. But India could be even better prepared by then. (WION)

Referring to ties with China, the Prime Minister said it was not unnatural for two large neighbouring powers to have some differences but both sides should show sensitivity and respect for each other&#39;s core concerns and interests.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the three- day-long Raisina Dialogue, India&#39;s flagship geo-political conference which is being attended by top foreign and security experts from across the world.

On ties with Pakistan, Modi said the path of peace has to be Pakistan&#39;s journey as well and that India&#39;s stand in delinking terrorism from religion, and rejecting artificial distinction between good and bad terrorism, are now a global talking point.

&quot;My vision for our neighbourhood puts premium on peaceful and harmonious ties with entire South Asia. That vision had led me to invite leaders of all SAARC nations, including Pakistan, for my swearing in.

Indian Prime Minister Modi tells Pakistan to abandon terrorism for bilateral dialogue to resume

Asserting that the eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh is an &#39;integral part&#39; of India, Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson today rebuffed China for objecting to US Ambassador Richard Verma&#39;s recent visit to the state, Indian news agency PTI reported.

&quot;The US Ambassador visited Arunachal Pradesh, a state which is an integral part of the country to which he is accredited. There is nothing unusual in it,&quot; external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said here.

A day after the US envoy in India visited Arunachal Pradesh (which Beijing claims as southern Tibet), China today warned the US that any interference by it in the Sino-India boundary dispute will make it &quot;more complicated&quot; and &quot;disturb&quot; hard-won peace at the border.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang also asked the US to desist from interfering in the India-China border dispute while referring to Verma&#39;s October 22 tour to Tawang at the invitation of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
