IPL 2018: Delhi opt to bat against Hyderabad

Delhi will return to its home ground Feroz Shah Kotla and will host table-toppers Hyderabad today. Their last encounter was won by the Kane-Williamson side by seven wickets.

Kotla has proved to be lucky for the home team of late - Shreyas Iyer has won both times he’s led the team out at this venue following Gautam Gambhir’s sudden resignation from the captaincy.

As Delhi stands last in the league table, its important for the franchise to beat Hyderabad to keep their chances of qualifying for the play-off alive.

IPL 2018: Match preview - Revived Delhi to face table-toppers Hyderabad

As the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) reached its mid-way mark, some teams are in a commanding position while some are hanging around the play-off spots and some are almost out of the tournament.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai, Williamson-led Hyderabad and Ashwin-led Punjab acquire the top three positions, while Karthik-led Kolkata, Rahane-led Rajasthan and Virat Kohli-led Bengaluru are aiming to make it to the play-off.

Delhi, which yesterday defeated Rajasthan to move two places up to acquire 6th spot, are still in a bit of a worry. Mumbai on the other hand, lost its sixth match, out of eight played, to Bangalore.

They will have to win all their matches to keep their hopes alive.

But, the teams which are stable for now in the cash-rich tournament, are celebrating their position off the field during the breaks between the matches and during all the travelling.

While some star players prefer to beat the heat in their own way.

The Kolkata players were involved in recovery sessions by the pool as they look to spoil Chennai's party and move into the double figures on the points table. So far, Kolkata have won four and lost four matches each in IPL 2018.

The players involve Chris Gayle, Karun Nair and other star players

IPL: Chris Gayle takes time-off in Kerala

The bottom-placed Delhi are in desperate need of a victory to survive in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Shreyas Iyer-led side suffered a 13-run defeat at the hands of table-toppers Chennai.

They will face an inconsistent Rajasthan at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground, and the new skipper will be hoping to repeat the way Delhi performed against Kolkata to pick up the much-needed win.

Delhi have performed terrific with the bat in the previous two matches and will hope they can continue to do the same against Ajinkya Rahane-le side.

Captain Iyer and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant have done the bulk of the scoring, amassing 306 and 257 runs respectively and the responsibility will be on them again to lead their team from the front.

Big guns Glenn Maxwell (126 runs in seven matches), Jason Roy (97 in three matches) and Colin Munro (63 runs in four matches) have not made significant contributions so far and Delhi would be hoping for them to start performing now.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan will also be looking to make a comeback after they suffered 11-run defeat at the hands of Hyderabad in a low-scoring affair.

IPL 2018: Match preview of Delhi and Rajasthan

Hyderabad take on Rajasthan in the first match of IPL super Sunday on April 29 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.

Rajasthan, sitting at the mid of the points table would look to earn two crucial points tonight.

Whereas, Hyderabad is currently placed at number two and have gained the required momentum and skipper Kane Williamson would never want to lose it.

We have seen that Rajasthan were on their way to suffer back-to-back defeats before a superb cameo from all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham helped them to defeat Mumbai by three wickets last Sunday.

Also, with his explosive hitting, the immensely talented Sanju Samson is turning out to be Rajasthan's batting mainstay. It will interesting to see how Rajasthan's batting side will face Rashid Khan, the spin sensation of Hyderabad.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is still struggling with back injury issue but it does not seem to have affected Hyderabad too much as Basil Thampi and Sandeep Sharma have given the required strength to the team.

On the other hand, Ajinkya would not want to make any changes in the playing XI unless there is an injury issue.

IPL 2018: Match preview of Hyderabad vs Rajasthan

Despite giving a tough fight, Rajasthan fell 11 runs short to defeat Hyderabad at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday.

Skipper Ajinkay Rahane smashed an unbeaten at 65 but couldn't help his team taste victory in today's game.

Sanju Samson, who is franchise's most consistent player, again played a brilliant knock and made 40 runs off 30 balls which included three fours and one six.&nbsp
&nbsp
Earlier, Rajasthan's Jofra Archer took three wickets to restrict Hyderabad to a paltry total of 151 runs.

In his four overs, Archer gave just 26 runs. &nbsp

On the other side, Skipper Kane Williamson and Alex Hales added 92 runs off 67 balls for the second wicket to help their team set a decent total on board.&nbsp

While Shikhar Dhawan departed after making just six runs, Williamson smashed a brilliant half-century.

The skipper made 43-ball 63 before giving away his wicket to Sodhi.&nbsp

Alex Hales, who was playing a superb knock, lost his wicket to Gowtham after making 45 runs off just 39 balls.&nbsp

Hyderabad won the toss and opted to bat against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday.

"We are gonna have a bat. Day game and it looks like a very good surface. Just the one change. Hales comes in for Nabi." he said&nbsp

It may be a way game for them but Hyderabad will still fancy their chances.

Despite losing their skipper David Warner as a result of the one-year ban imposed on the Australian run-machine due to ball tampering, Hyderabad showed tremendous fighting abilities and the very impressive win ratio is proof of that.

While revenge may on Rajasthan's mid having lost the first leg game by nine wickets, the home team will need to play out of its skin to come out winners tomorrow.

Batting lynchpin Shikhar Dhawan will look to make merry, having missed out on the previous match against Punjab.

A certain Kane Williamson is always an asset to any team while Manish Pandey's confidence has surely gone up after what proved to be a critical half-century against Punjab.

The likes of Deepak Hooda and Yusuf Pathan add depth to their batting.

The world's top-ranked T20 bowler, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has led Rajasthan's spin attack with some success, and they have the ever-reliable Bhuvneshwar Kumar spearhead the pace department.

Khan was outstanding against Punjab, returning figures of three for 19 in four overs. The likes of Shakib-al-Hasan, Billy Stanlake Siddaharth Kaul complete Hy7derabad's attack.

IPL 2018: Hyderabad trounce Mumbai at Wankhede

Every time I see Sourav Ganguly I ponder that whether Ganguly ever called up Vinod Kambli to show his gratitude. After all, if Kambli did not have that typical streak of self-destruction, the fate of both Kambli and Ganguly would have been different.

Vinod Kambli was the brightest star of Indian middle order after his back to back Test double centuries in 1993. He started taking his success for granted and by 1995, his life was on a different track altogether.

More than his batting he was paying attention to style quotient, to his hairstyle and kind of beard he would sport. His non-seriousness was palpable on the ground. By the time World Cup 1996 was over, his crankiness was way beyond the acceptable zone.

Kambli was dropped from the side which toured England in the summer of 1996. Another elegant southpaw Ganguly (along with Rahul Dravid) grabbed the opportunity with both hands and Kambli never played for India.

Few years further back in 1984-85, another "style bhai" Sandeep Patil played a sheer reckless shot in Delhi Test against England at the time when India was struggling to save Test.

Patil was dropped as punishment and he was replaced by Azharuddin. Azhar grabbed the opportunity and scored three centuries back to back. Sandeep Patil never played for India.

On Tuesday's night, when I saw Mumbai catapulting against a total of 118 of Sunrisers Hyderabad, I was not only feeling very sorry for the team but also for the talented young player like Hardik Pandya. Chasing a total of 118, Mumbai was bundled out for just 87.

Hardik Pandya, playing down the order scored just 3 runs facing 19 balls. When Pandya was returning back to the pavilion, I was sensing and fearing that Pandya may end up as another Patil or Kambli, a premature end of a promising player. After the match, Mumbai's coach Mahela Jayawardene minced no words and censured Pandya in particular for the poor show.

Just a few months back, Hardik Pandya was a new poster boy of Indian Cricket. Many believe that he would be for India what Ben Stokes is for England. In my opinion, His swashbuckling knock at Cape Town is one of best knocks by an Indian number seven overseas in recent Test series with South Africa.

But then at Cape Town, he blew the credentials he earned by his callous attitude. His casual running at the Centurion was deplorable and moreover, the smugness with which strolled back to the pavilion after throwing his wicket was beyond limits actually.

At Pandya's age, steep success may come with a desire to become the super stud and ultra-cool on the field. One tends to become swagger. It has even happened to people like Sachin Tendulkar. 1998 was the whirlwind year for Tendulkar. He scored nine ODI centuries in a single calendar year.

He singles handily decimated Australia in home Test series. In January 1999, India played the first Test of a Test series against Pakistan at Chennai. Tendulkar came to bat with a mindset to dominate bowling right from the word go and Saqlain sent him back without scoring. Tendulkar learned his lesson. He scored a magnificent century in the second innings. He did a timely course correction.

A few years back I read an interview of Sandeep Patil. Patil, in fact, was admitting and repenting that in Delhi he blundered and agreed that he was not taking his game seriously and paid the hefty price.

Pandya needs to take a cue from the past and control and his aggression and attitude. Nothing wrong with your desire with showmanship but your duties come first and Pandya needs to understand this.

Changing hairstyle every week will not give you sustained success, but toiling at the net and your desire to improve continually will deliver it for sure. Complacency can be career limiting. Mahela Jayawardene has also clearly told that Hardik Pandya need to work harder and evolve to become a consistent cricketer.

He is a talented cricketer and if he can reorganise his energy, he is a serious long-term prospect for the side. Or else there is no dearth of talent to replace him.

An Azharuddin or a Ganguly is always there to grab the opportunity.

He is a talented cricketer and if he can reorganise his energy, he is a serious long-term prospect for the side. Or else there is no dearth of talent to replace him. An Azharuddin or a Ganguly is always there to grab the opportunity. (Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are the personal views of the author and do not reflect the views of ZMCL)

Opinion: Hardik Pandya needs to take cue from history

The crowd at Wankhede Stadium celebrated their favourite cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's birthday in style as Mumbai hosted Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Tendulkar, who is Mumbai team's icon, cut a cake to celebrate his 45th birthday.&nbsp

The crowd at the Wankhede sang the birthday song together to wish him the legend 'Happy Birthday'. &nbspSachin's die-hard fan, Sudhir, was also present in the stands with his body painted in tri-colour and held the Indian national flag.&nbsp

But soon the happiness turned into sadness as Hyderabad trounced Mumbai as they registered a crushing 31-run victory.

Mumbai couldn't give Sachin Tendulkar the perfect birthday present as they completely messed up their run chase and got bowled out for 87 while chasing 118.

Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya were the only two contributions of significance for Mumbai as they made 34 and 24 respectively.

IPL 2018: Bitter cake for Sachin Tendulkar on 45th birthday

Kane Williamson-led side was bowled for just 118 runs, setting the lowest target for any franchise in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

Hyderabad had a poor start as they lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for just five runs. He was bowled by McClenaghan.

In the same over, the Mumbai pacer managed to send wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha back to the pavilion on a duck. So far, Saha did not had a good campaign in the cash-rich tournament.&nbsp

Skipper Williamson, who was the backbone of the franchise in last all matches, failed to stand up for the team this time. &nbsp

He gave away his wicket to Hardik Pandya after making 29 runs off 21 balls.&nbsp

However, he is the highest scorer for the franchise.

As usual, the downline again failed to perform, resulting in a poor score on the board. &nbsp&nbsp

Yusuf Pathan tried to save Hyderabad from drowning but was also sent back by Mustafizur.&nbsp

He became the second highest scorer for the team by making 29 runs off 33 balls. &nbsp&nbsp

Earlier, Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma on Tuesday won the toss and opted to field against Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai, which lost four out of five games played, will be looking to outplay Kane Williamson-side in order to get their campaign back on track.

Talking about his team and strategy for today, the Mumbai batsman said, "We are gonna bowl first. It is a good pitch and it is hard ground to defend. Not gonna change a lot through the course of 40 overs. It's been a little disappointing in those terms (losing close games). We played good cricket and it is just the finishing touch we are lacking."

"We played five games so far and we need to understand as a team where we went wrong. It is a fresh game and we want to treat every game as a new game and start afresh because it is important to keep our head straight and work towards the victory. We are unchanged," he added.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, lost two consecutive matches. The team had given a good start to their campaign in this year's IPL as they won three matches in a row to be at the top of the points table.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who missed the last match against Chennai due to injury, is making a return. The franchise is highly dependent on openers as the middle-batting order has not performed so far.

Talking about their strategy for today, Williamson said, "We would have liked to bowl as well. It does look like a good surface and whatever we are gonna do, we should do well. We are going with 3 spinners and 3 seamers."

"Obviously number of injuries with Bhuvi and Stanlake missing out with injuries. Shikhar is back in the side. Nabi and Thampi are in too. Exciting times for us as some of the guys have got the opportunity for the first time this season. Looking forward to an exciting contest," the Hyderabad skipper added.

The franchise suffered a huge blow as star pacer Billy Stanlake has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a fractured finger.&nbsp

IPL 2018: Mumbai win toss, opt to field

Defending champions Mumbai will be up against Hyderabad for the second time in this year's IPL. Their first encounter was won by one wicket.

Both the teams will try all the cards under their sleeves to emerge out as victorious in this match for sure.

So let us take a look at the top players to watch out for in today's game.

1. Suryakumar Yadav: He has been Mumbai's most successful and consistent batsman ever since the beginning of the season. Yadav, who played for Kolkata in 2017, has displayed a totally different game than what he had last year. Having compiled 196 runs from five innings with an impressive strike rate of 140, he is definitely among the players to watch out for in today's game.

2. Rohit Sharma: The Mumbai skipper, who shelved his poor form with a thundering 52-ball 94, will be all set to spread some magic on the ground for his franchise. Given his track record and capabilities, fans are expecting a quality performance from him in this match. Rohit, who has not done justice to his playing abilities so far in IPL, would also be very determined to deliver the same.

3. Kane Williamson: The Hyderabad skipper has been in red-hot form for the franchise. Or to say is more directly, he is the backbone of the batting line-up of Hyderabad. Having amassed a total of 230 runs with an average of 57.50, Williamson has scored three consecutive fifties in his last three outings.

4. Rashid Khan: The Afghanistan tweaker is yet to repeat what he had done for his franchise in 2017. He made his debut in the IPL last year and got 17 wickets from 14 matches at an average of 21.05. But his bowling figures in this season so far are nowhere near to his previous season's performance. Khan has four wickets from five matches averaging at 42.75, almost double compared to the last season.

5. Krunal Pandya: The Mumbai batsman has performed decently in IPL so far. But it will be important for him to perform at his home ground. Krunal is one of those batsmen who can single-handedly snatch the match from the opponent's jaws. Hence, his calibre makes him the player to watch out for in today's clash against Hyderabad.

IPL 2018: Match preview of Mumbai vs Hyderabad

Chasing a mammoth 183 runs target, Hyderabad team fought hard but in the end, lost to Chennai by mere four runs.&nbsp

Kane Williamson played a skipper's knock and slammed 84 runs but Bravo defended 19 off the last over to give Chennai the win.&nbsp

Williamson reignited the Hyderabad's chase but lost his wicket to Bravo while trying to hit a six.&nbsp

Yusuf Pathan, who was at the other end with Williamson, too tried to hit a six but gave away his wicket to Thakur after making 45 runs off 27 balls.

Opener Ricky Bhui, who replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan, failed to contribute and was sent back to the pavilion without opening his account. &nbsp

Ambati Rayudu and Suresh Raina slammed a half-century each to help Chennai set a decent target against Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 on Saturday.

Raydu slammed a powerful 37-ball 79 while Raina made 54 runs off 43 balls to lift Chennai to 182 runs after a loss of three wickets.

Raydu got run-out in a dramatic turn of event on the ground while Raina remained unbeaten.

Chennai Skipper MS Dhoni too contributed crucial 25 runs off just 12 balls.

Earlier, Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl in their clash against Chennai at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Playing at their home ground, Hyderabad will look to regain the winning momentum. After winning three matches in a row, Hyderabad tasted their first defeat in this year's IPL from Punjab.

However, in today's game Hyderabad entered the ground without Shikhar Dhawan. &nbsp

Speaking after the toss, Kane said, "We'll bowl. Not a strong advantage as the wicket remains similar generally. They have a strong batting line-up, the Chennai side so it's important we do the job first up."

"Billy Stanlake comes in for CJ and Ricky Bhui makes his debut, comes in for Shikhar. He (Dhawan) adds to any team so his inclusion would be good. It's a good chance for Ricky who's an exciting young talent. Think Shikhar will be ready for the next match. It's always a tough game. We'll play at the best of our ability and I am sure it'll be another good game," he added.

Meanwhile, Chennai skipper MS Dhoni said, "So far so good. It's not like we are relying on one individual. Everyone has contributed when it comes to bowling or batting. We always want the whole team to contribute so that there's not much pressure on one individual."

"It's always important that's why you are playing a team sport. The job of every individual becomes easy. What is important is someone soaks up the pressure. Imran Tahir is not fit so Faf comes his place."

Virender Sehwag saved the IPL by picking me: Chris Gayle

West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle is 38 years old, but when he comes to bat, his strokes and the energy he possesses is of a 24-year-old boy, who has debuted recently and can play unpredictable shots.

Every time Gayle enters the ground, he managed to leave the audience stunned, either by hitting runs or by going back to pavilion on a duck.&nbsp

Going on a duck is more shocking for people than hitting big sixes and setting up a huge score single-handedly.

On Thursday, Chris Gayle scored his 21st T20 century and the first century of IPL 2018 as he made 104 runs off 62 balls for Punjab in Mohali.

Gayle, who plays for Punjab, played with caution in the beginning. to reach his half-century off 39 balls.&nbsp

The left-handed batsman was having trouble while running, but that proved more detrimental for Hyderabad as the big man dealt in sixes only.

In one over of spin wizard from Afghanistan Rashid Khan, who is touted to be as World No. 1 T20I bowler, Gayle smashed 4 sixes in a row.&nbsp And in Khan's previous over he smashed 2 consecutive sixes.&nbsp&nbsp

In Punjab's previous match, the colossal batsman smashed a 33-ball 66 and couldn't have had a better debut in this year's edition.&nbsp

If talked about his previous IPL records then the Jamaican cricketer holds the record of hitting the most sixes.&nbsp

In 103 matches of IPL, Gayle has smashed 280 sixes. He has 22 half-centuries and six centuries to his credit.&nbsp

His six centuries is another highest record the player has in his name.&nbspHe also holds the highest individual score record in the cash-rich tournament.&nbsp

The individual score of 175 not out off 66 balls for Bangalore and a century reached in 30 balls, Gayle set records for the fastest century reached in any format of cricket.

After seeing such record, who will believe that this 'run-machine' had no takers in the IPL auctions held in January.

He went unsold twice before Punjab and its management snatched up the whirlwind batsman aka 'Da Universe Boss' for his base price Rs 2 crore.

But as we say 'old is gold' and the sheer power and timing of Gayle's shots currently are, he is one of the most feared batsmen in international cricket.&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp

But his figures against Punjab were staggering as he picked up 7 wickets in 2 matches with an economy of 5.75 against them in the last season which also includes his career-best figures of 5/19.

5) Mujeeb Ur Rahman: The 17-year-old Afghanistan cricketer made headlines when he was snapped-up for a hefty price of Rs 4 crore by Punjab.
