On July 6, Earth experienced a new unofficial record high average temperature, marking the third milestone in a week of scorching temperatures that made it the hottest period on record.

According to data from the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, the global average temperature reached 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17.23 degrees Celsius), surpassing the previous marks of 62.9 degrees Fahrenheit and 17.18 degrees Celsius set earlier in the week, reported the Associated Press.

While the accuracy of the Maine tool's findings has been questioned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the data aligns with concerning climate change patterns observed worldwide.

Sweltering heatwaves and unusual warmth

The global average temperature includes regions enduring extreme and hazardous heatwaves, such as Jingxing, China, where temperatures soared to nearly 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius).

Additionally, even traditionally colder areas like Antarctica experienced unusually warm conditions, with temperatures up to eight degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius) above normal across much of the continent this week.

Heatwave havoc: Beijing halts outdoor work as scorching summer temperatures shoot up

The latest data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction reveals that global temperatures have reached a new record, emphasising the alarming consequences of continually rising greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels.

On Monday, the average global temperature soared to 17°C (63°F), surpassing the previous record of 16.9°C set in August 2016. This new milestone highlights the exceptional intensity of the summer experienced in the northern hemisphere in 2023, serving as a stark reminder of the sluggish global efforts in addressing emissions reduction.

Achievement not deserving of celebration

“This is not a milestone we should be celebrating, it's a death sentence for people and ecosystems,” Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment told Bloomberg. “Worryingly, it won't be the hottest day for a long time.” The El Niño weather phenomenon is set to push global temperatures higher, she said.

Explaining the crisis, Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, told the Guardian: “Unfortunately, it promises to only be the first in a series of new records set this year as increasing emissions of (carbon dioxide) and greenhouse gases, coupled with a growing El Nino event, push temperatures to new highs.”

During the period between 1979 and 2000, the world's average air temperature typically ranged from approximately 12 degrees Celsius to just below 17 degrees Celsius throughout the year. However, at the start of July, the average temperature reached 16.2 degrees Celsius, marking a significant deviation from the norm.

While this record is yet to be validated by other measurements, it is highly likely that it will be surpassed in the coming weeks as the summer season intensifies in the northern hemisphere. Historically, the average global temperature continues to climb until the end of July or early August.

Heatwave in southern United States

The southern United States has been grappling with a significant surge in temperatures, as a scorching heatwave persists for the past three weeks. Stretching from Florida to Arizona, this deadly heatwave has subjected the region to triple-digit temperatures. Meanwhile, China continues to endure a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 35°C (95°F). North Africa, too, has experienced extreme heat, with temperatures nearing 50°C (122°F).

Even in Antarctica, where it is currently winter, unusually high temperatures have been recorded. Ukraine's Vernadsky Research Base, situated in the Argentine Islands of the icy continent, recently broke its July temperature record, reaching 8.7°C (47.6°F). Furthermore, the United Kingdom has witnessed its hottest June this year.

The report cited the data provided by ERA5 which found that the first few days of the month even breached a 1.5 degree Celsius increase when compared with pre-industrial times.

The report suggests that this might be the first time this breach of high temperature had occurred in the industrial era. “Global-mean surface air temperatures for the first days of June 2023 were the highest in the ERA5 data record for early June by a substantial margin,” said the report, with the data collection going back as far as 1950.”

The temperature recorded in early June is also nearly one degree Celsius above levels previously recorded for the same month back in 1979. “The world has just experienced its warmest early June on record, following a month of May that was less than 0.1°C cooler than the warmest May on record,” said Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Deputy Director Samantha Burgess.

Searing heat in Mexico has claimed the lives of more than 100 people in the month of June, the government said in a statement, after a series of heatwaves rattled the nation. According to scientists, global warming is aggravating adverse weather conditions in the world with many countries battling with soaring temperatures. As per the figures released by the health ministry on Wednesday, nearly 1,000 heat-related emergencies were reported in Mexico between June 12 and 25, of which 104 resulted in deaths. Meanwhile, the authorities had already reported eight deaths between April 14 and May 31, taking the death toll to 112. The cause of the deaths was reported as heat stroke, followed by dehydration, as per the health ministry. With 64 deaths in the northeastern state of Nuevo Leon and 19 in neighbouring Tamaulipas, Mexico's northern regions reported the most fatalities. Also read: Mexico: Eight killed in gun battle between suspected cartel members in Chihuahua The health ministry said that in Mexico, a maximum temperature of 49 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) was recorded this week in the northwestern state of Sonora. It added that the average maximum temperatures in Mexico during the summer fluctuate between 30 and 45 degrees Celsius. Global temperatures rise above average in early June Preliminary global average temperatures taken at the beginning of June were the warmest on record for the period, said the European Union’s climate monitoring unit, on June 15. A report by Copernicus, the EU’s observation agency, said that they have noted a “remarkable global warmth” in the first week of June this year. The report cited the data provided by ERA5 which found that the first few days of the month even breached a 1.5 degree Celsius increase when compared with pre-industrial times. In an incident that unfolded at Big Bend National Park in Texas, a Florida man and his teenage stepson lost their lives during a hike in extreme heat, according to officials, as reported by the BBC.

The tragedy occurred when the 14-year-old boy fell ill along the trail and subsequently lost consciousness. Meanwhile, his stepfather met with a fatal car accident while attempting to seek assistance, authorities revealed. The exact causes of their deaths have yet to be determined.

Historic heatwaves in recent weeks

Southern states, including Texas, have been grappling with a historic heatwave in recent weeks, intensifying the danger faced by hikers. The National Park Service has actively cautioned individuals to avoid trails during the afternoon, stay well-hydrated, and limit exposure to the sun.

The incident occurred as the 31-year-old man and his two stepsons were hiking along the Marufo Vega Trail in scorching 119°F (48°C) temperatures. When the teenager fell ill, the stepfather embarked on a return journey to their vehicle to seek help, while the boy's 21-year-old brother attempted to carry him back to the trailhead, as reported by the National Park Service.

At approximately 6:00 PM local time (11:00 PM GMT), the Big Bend National Park's Communications Centre received an emergency assistance call.

Tragically, when park rangers and US Border Patrol Agents arrived at 7:30 PM local time, they discovered the lifeless body of the teenager along the trail. The treacherous Marufo Vega Trail winds through unforgiving desert terrain and rocky cliffs, devoid of shade or water, making it perilous to undertake during the summer's sweltering heat.

While rescuers continued their search for the father, they made a devastating discovery at around 8:00 PM local time—a crashed vehicle over the embankment at the Boquillas Overlook. Regrettably, the stepfather was pronounced dead at the crash site. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.

Thursday's daily temperature also happens to be the city's second-highest logged temperature overall. China's Beijing logged its highest temperature on 24 July 1999, when the city recorded just below 41.9C. On Thursday, people on the streets of Beijing, as per AFP, were seen wearing masks, hats and visors to protect themselves from the sun.

On Friday morning, across the nation, 185 red alerts were issued across swathes of northern and eastern China.

China's weather system

In China, the weather-warning system has four tiers; red, orange, yellow and blue. Here, red stands for the most severe heat, orange is comparatively less heat, it is then followed by Yellow and blue.

The red alert indicates that within 24 hours the temperatures are going to rise above 40C.

Local authorities on Friday also issued warnings regarding the high temperatures and the detrimental effect on health. They warned that the extended period of high temperatures could lead to an increased risk of stroke. They have advised people to drink at least 1.5 litres of water daily and try to limit their time outdoors.

Beijing issues highest-ever 'red' weather warning; temperatures to cross 40C

Chinese capital Beijing on Thursday (June 22) raised orange alert, the second highest weather warning as temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius mark. This has made Thursday the hottest June day ever since record-keeping began. The city has warned of blistering hot weather through the weekend. A heatwave that scorched northern China a week earlier has returned.

A weather station on the southern outskirts of Beijing recorded 41.1C (106 Fahrenheit) at 1:25 p.m. local time (0525 GMT), according to the municipal weather bureau.

Authorities in Beijing, a city of nearly 22 million people, have also said the temperatures could remain high at 39 degrees Celcius from Thursday to Saturday.

Last week, Beijing along with Tianjin, Hebei and Shandong in northern and eastern China were struck by heatwaves. This prompted local authorities to take steps to safeguard crops, to ensure that the tourists are safe. They also suspended outdoor work during the hottest part of the day.

Heat stroke alert

The national weather bureau issued a heat stroke alert last week. This year, this alert came almost a fortnight earlier than in previous years. Cities across northern China have battled new record temperatures.

Increased electricity demand for air-conditioners pushed power grid load to 14.54 million kilowatts on June 15 in the port city of Tianjin. This is 23 per cent up from a year earlier. The increased load made the local authorities dispatch workers to patrol underground tunnels every day to ensure that electrical cables are working fine.

The latest round of heatwaves has coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend in China. The heatwave is also expected to hit the northern Chinese region of Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang in the far west, said China Meteorological Administration.

Temperature crosses 40 degrees Celsius in Beijing, shatters all-time June record

Parts of the North Atlantic are witnessing an “exceptional” marine heatwave, with the coasts of the United Kingdom and Ireland recording the highest sea-surface temperatures.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that April and May reported the highest ocean surface temperatures since record-keeping began in 1850.

It said that parts of the North Atlantic have recorded Category 4 marine heat wave – defined as “extreme” — with water temperature in some areas reporting 5 degree Celsius (9 Fahrenheit) hotter than usual.

The UK Met Office said that temperatures in the North Atlantic in May were around 1.25 degree Celsius (2.25 Fahrenheit) above average.

“The eastern Atlantic, from Iceland down to the tropics, is much warmer than average. But areas around parts of north-western Europe, including parts of the UK, have among some of the highest sea-surface temperatures relative to average,” Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, said in a statement.

Situation alarming

Scientists have sounded alarm saying that such climatic phenomena might have adverse effects on marine life.

The Gulf Coast in Texas earlier this month saw thousands of dead fish washed up ashore, as scientists linked the deaths to rising ocean temperatures, saying that warmer water cannot hold more oxygen. In 2021, an extreme heat wave cooked around a billion shellfish to death on Canada’s West Coast.

Experts have expressed shock saying that called the spike in Atlantic heat wave was “totally unprecedented.”

“It is way beyond the worst-case predictions for the changing climate of the region. It’s truly frightening how fast this ocean basin is changing,” Richard Unsworth, an associate professor of biosciences at Swansea University in the UK and a founding director of Project-Seagrass, told CNN.

Factors behind the rise in water temperature

Scientists say there are a plethora of factors behind the rise of sea surface temperatures, with the primary reason being El Niño, a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It tends to have a warming effect globally.

Other factors that also may play a role include a lack of dust from the Sahara, which usually helps cool the region by reflecting away sunlight.

“Weaker than average winds have reduced the extent of dust in the region’s atmosphere potentially leading to higher temperatures,” Albert Klein Tank, the head of the Met Office Hadley Centre, said in a statement.

“Weaker winds may also have helped increase temperatures, as strong westerly winds typically cool the ocean surface,” Rantanen said.

North Atlantic experiencing record-breaking marine heatwave

According to reports, nearly 100 people have died in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and eastern Bihar over the past few days amid rising temperatures. This has since prompted officials in the northern state to launch an investigation into dozens of deaths that some have attributed to a heatwave, reported BBC.

What happened in Uttar Pradesh?

As per media reports, the total death toll was between 96 and 98. Meanwhile, 68 had been registered from the Indian state’s Ballia district, reported BBC. The Ballia district on Sunday (June 18) surpassed the average temperature of 38 degree Celsius to reach 43 degree Celsius with the relative humidity recorded at 25 per cent.

A report by the Associated Press said authorities found that most of those who died were over the age of 60, while others had pre-existing health conditions that were exacerbated by the intense heat. The government has advised elderly people to stay indoors as temperatures in several parts of UP ranged between 42 degree Celsius and 47 degree Celsius in the past week.

What sparked the row?

According to a report by BBC, a district health official, who suggested that the deaths could have been caused due to the heat, was transferred from UP a day later. The chief of Ballia district hospital, Diwakar Singh told reporters that at least 25 deaths have been recorded and that heat might have been a factor.

“Most of the patients were above 60 and had pre-existing ailments. These were exacerbated by the heat and they were brought to the hospital in serious condition. They died despite being given adequate treatment and medicines,” said Singh.

The next day he was transferred from the post. UP Deputy Chief Minister and state Health Minister Brajesh Pathak called Singh’s statements “careless” and said that the government is taking the situation “very seriously”.

The state government has since sent two senior officials to investigate the deaths and set up a panel to submit a report on the deaths. However, multiple opposition leaders have blamed the government for not warning people about the heatwave.

Similarly, officials in the neighbouring state Bihar, where 40 deaths have been attributed to heat since May 31, have denied the claims. Dr Umesh Kumar, the official in charge of Bihar’s disaster control room, told BBC, that they had only established one report of death due to extreme heat in the state’s Jehanabad district.

Indians are waiting for the annual rains that are so crucial to the economy. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Kerala coast might receive monsoon in 48 hours. The IMD forecast mentioned that the latest meteorological features related to the onset of the monsoon in Kerala depict a persistence of westerly winds over the south Arabian Sea. It also said that the westerly winds reached the tropospheric levels, and clouds are over the southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, and Kerala coasts. The onset of the southwest monsoon could delay the sowing of Kharif crops, especially paddy. Regular rainfall is critical for India's agricultural economy, as 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relies on it. It is also crucial for rejuvenating water reservoirs important for drinking water apart from power generation across the country. Around 40 per cent of India's total food production depends on rain, making it a crucial contributor to India's food security and economic stability. Monsoon forecast & warning Kerala, Lakshadweep, and south interior Karnataka might witness light or moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning or gusty winds. According to the IMD forecast, there might be isolated or scattered activity over coastal and north interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh over the next five days. Manipur and Mizoram might witness isolated heavy rainfall on June 7. IMD has also predicted isolated heavy showers over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on June 10 and 11, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on June 11. On June 7, West Rajasthan might witness a thundersquall of 50-60 km/h. In June, most parts of India can expect 'below normal' rains during the four-month southwest monsoon season, ending in September. ALSO READ | Cyclone 'Biparjoy' to intensify in next 24 hours, here's how it will impact monsoon in India Heatwave warning According to the latest IMD forecast, Northwest India might see a two to four-degree Celsius rise in maximum temperature during the next five days. Central India might also witness a rise in maximum temperature. Heatwave conditions will continue in some regions of Bihar, West Bengal, east Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh for the next five days. Cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' Cyclone 'Biparjoy,' last recorded over the east-central and southeast Arabian Sea, is expected to shift northwards. It may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. The cyclone might impact the weather in the southwestern states of India. The winds might intensify to 100km/h in the areas adjoining to west-central and south Arabian Sea and the northern coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa.
Hanoi turns off street lights to save electricity amid soaring temperatures

Last week, Vietnam's capital city Hanoi turned some street lights off partially to keep the national power system running due to soaring temperatures.

The weather officials issued a warning that the country could be hit by a heatwave in the month of June.

Following the warning, several cities cut back on public lighting after state utility company Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said rising public demand for air conditioning could burden the national grid further.

"It's so harsh and hot outside that people have to wear protective clothing to cool down and not get burned," Reuters quoted Hanoi resident Tran Van Hung, 67, as saying on Monday (May 29).

"I am worried about a power shortage, which may badly impact us during the hot summer," Hanoi resident Do Tung Duong said while on a walk in the dim city centre.

Another resident, Vu Thi Hoa, told AFP she agreed with the measure to cut public lighting.

"We should turn off unnecessary electric equipment, especially the lights. It feels hotter if there are too many lights on," she said.

"We need power for fans and air conditioners. It will be terrible if there is a power cut."

In response to EVN's calls for power saving, Hanoi Public Lighting Company HAPULICO reduced the city's street lights.

"Although some cuts are made to street lights every year, the power saving scheme is in a wider area this year, covering 70 per cent of the city's public lighting system," HAPULICO deputy director Le Trung Kien told local media.

"We still ensure enough lighting for traffic, security and order."

"We still ensure enough lighting for traffic, security and order." (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Severe heatwave sears Israel, triggers hundreds of fires across the country

To keep the power system of the country running amid soaring temperatures, Vietnam's capital city Hanoi has turned some street lights off partially to keep the national power system running.

The record rise in temperature has triggered a surge in the demand for air conditioning in some parts of the Southeast Asian nation.

As per local media reports, two-thirds of street lights were turned off after 11 pm, following which the parks in the city descended into total darkness.

Vietnam reports record high temperatures of 44.1 degrees

Vietnam's northern and central regions are experiencing a heat wave, which has caused temperatures in some locations to reach a record 44.1 degree Celsius.

Low pressure advancing from the west and the Foehn effect are the reasons for the extreme temperatures over the past three days. The Fohn effect is a meteorological change from wet and cold conditions on one side of a mountain to warmer and drier conditions on the other side. There have been 39 to 43-degree temperature readings in about 15 different places.

The highest temperature was 42 degrees in the northwestern Son La Province and 43 degrees in the north-central Nghe An Province.

Vietnam heatwave: Hanoi turns off street lights to save electricity amid soaring temperatures

India's weather department announced that the capital of world's most populous nation is set to experience a much-needed respite from an earth-scorching heat wave that has gripped North India this May. The heatwave is expected to subside as temperature is likely to fall in the coming days due to change in western disturbances, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

"The Western Disturbance is hitting Northwest India. Its effect has started to be seen in Jammu-Kashmir," the IMD Delhi regional head Kuldeep Srivastava said, while referring to the weather phenomenon that typically results in lowered temperatures.

"On May 24 and 25, it will have its effect in northwest India, Delhi-NCR and north Rajasthan. It will be cloudy and some light rain may also occur," Srivastava said.

Delhi weather forecast: What does it predict?

Wednesday, May 24: The IMD weather forecast describes a "generally cloudy sky", along with light rain and thundershowers along with gusty winds towards afternoon and around evening at most places.

Thursday, May 25: The IMD weather forecast, for the second day in a row, describes a "generally cloudy sky" for Delhi and surrounding regions along with light rain and thundershowers.

Friday, May 26: By Friday, Delhi's weather is expected to be affected by a "generally cloudy sky" along with light rain and thundershowers at a few places.

Delhi weather forecast: How less rain is too less rain?

The IMD on Tuesday further noted that it may rain 1-2 cm in Delhi. This much rain typically leads to a temperature slash by 4-5 degrees Celsius.

There is also a chance of hailstorm in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, areas of Punjab connected with Himachal Pradesh and some areas of north Rajasthan during the period, the IMD scientist noted.

Delhi heatwave: How bad is it?

The Mercury on Tuesday ascended above 43 degrees Celsius.
